Porsche Design BlackBerry to debut October 27

A BlackBerry smartphone featuring a unique design and Porsche brand will be making its debut on October 27. The device was leaked back in September in a slew of images along with a video, revealing a highly modified 9900/9930 form factor that's more angular and sharp. It was called the BlackBerry 9980 prototype in the video but it has also been rumored as the BlackBerry Knight, R47, and the Porsche Proceeding. Read The Full Story

RIM facing mass defection over BlackBerry blunders

RIM may believe its BlackBerry outage compensation is "a pretty comprehensive set of efforts" but it may not be enough to staunch the flow of users ditching the platform, according to new research. A full 30-percent of large scale BlackBerry users plan to jump ship in 2012, Enterprise Management Associates' figures claim, with a mere 14-percent of users themselves happy with their RIM smartphone. First BlackBerry free app mea-culpa goes up for download

RIM has pushed out the first of its free BlackBerry apps, part of the company's apology to frustrated subscribers affected by the outage last week. In total, RIM plans to make twelve titles free to download - collectively priced at over $100 normally - including a mixture of games and utilities. BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 outed with Android app converter

RIM’s BBX may be in the pipeline, but it’s the Developer Beta of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 that’s here today. Announced at BlackBerry DevCon 2011 this morning, the new OS 2.0 includes the BlackBerry Plug-In for Android Development Tools, which allows coders to use the existing Eclipse Android development environment to make software that will also run on the PlayBook. There’s also RIM’s Runtime for Android Apps which now has an online tool to convert your Android apps into a PlayBook-friendly package.

RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie has defended the company's compensation offer of free apps not cash for customers impacted by the BlackBerry outage last week, though has admitted RIM may still compensate carriers. BlackBerry outage may cost RIM over $100 million

According to JPMorgan Chase analyst Rod Hall, the nearly four-day BlackBerry service outage may cost RIM more than $100 million. The service went down on Monday due to a hardware failure in Europe that caused a backlog on RIM's servers, which then brought down the service in the Middle East, Africa, India, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and eventually the US and Canada. What Happened to that RIM Apple TV Rival?

Over the summer, some reports cropped up suggesting RIM was working on a set-top box that would compete against devices like the Apple TV. Dubbed “BlackBerry Cyclone,” the product would reportedly include Netflix streaming, YouTube content, and all kinds of other features.

Soon after that report surfaced, I took to SlashGear to discuss why I believed the device would fail miserably. I told readers that as an enterprise-focused mobile company, it wouldn’t make any sense for RIM to release such a device. And many of you agreed.

RIM: BlackBerry “fully restored” but no compensation news

“You expect better of us, I expect better of us.” So RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis opened the company’s apologetic BlackBerry press conference this morning, before swiftly pointing out that services have now been “fully restored”. As for compensation, however, fellow co-CEO Jim Balsillie said RIM has no idea, at present, what or even if that could be “Our focus has been 100-percent on getting services restored,” he told investors and journalists, “that’s something we’re going to focus on now, but it hasn’t been our priority overnight.”
