The smartphone market is a cage match, and all manufacturers are fighting for every last percentage of market share. SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 31, 2012

, Oct 31st 2012 Discuss [0]

Welcome to the special Halloween edition of the Evening Wrap-Up! The Halloween edition is pretty much the same as regular Wrap-Ups, the only difference is that I'm dressed as Ginger Spice as I type this. Let's spice up our lives with a recap, shall we? Microsoft is being sued over its Windows 8 live tiles, and Apple has removed delivery dates from iPad Mini LTE pre-orders, leading some to suspect that the company has been forced to delay them. T-Mobile and AT&T have opened up their networks in areas hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, letting customers of both carriers use either network - a respectable move by the two carriers in this time of need. BlackBerry 10 enters testing with RIM’s carrier partners

, Oct 31st 2012 Discuss [0]

While there's still a lot we don't know about BlackBerry 10 (like its release date), RIM CEO Thorsten Heins delivered some very encouraging news today. In a new statement, RIM's head honcho said that the new mobile operating system and some of the devices it runs on have entered testing with a number of the company's carrier partners. This suggests that RIM is still on track to launch BlackBerry 10 in Q1 2013. Read The Full Story

US Immigrations and Customs dump BlackBerry in favor of the iPhone

, Oct 22nd 2012 Discuss [0]

If you thought the BlackBerry platform was coming back simply due to their powerful contracts held with the US government, today's announcement of the ICE drop might throw you for a loop - especially since they're moving to the iPhone instead. This update comes from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) who says BlackBerry "can no longer meet the mobile technology needs of the agency." This government agency speaks for groups such as Homeland Security Investigations and has been using RIM's BlackBerry phones for 8 years. Read The Full Story

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 17, 2012

, Oct 17th 2012 Discuss [0]

It's time to begin counting down to the weekend once again, because we've hit Wednesday evening. Today we heard that the iPad Mini could launch on November 2, which makes sense considering that date is just over a week after Apple's October 23 press event. Later in the day, more sources were mentioning a November 2 release date for the iPad Mini, as well as spilling a few more details about the long-rumored device. The Isis NFC mobile payment system will apparently be launching on October 22, and Microsoft said that Internet Explorer 10 will be coming to Windows 7 in mid-November. Read The Full Story

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins sticks up for BlackBerry in letter to NY Times

, Oct 17th 2012 Discuss [0]

A couple of days ago, The New York Times published a piece called "The BlackBerry as Black Sheep," which contained interviews with BlackBerry owners who are ashamed of their phone. In a nutsell, the general idea of the article is that, as the rest of the world moves onto Android and iOS, those who are left using BlackBerry open themselves up to mockery and ridicule because of their preference for a perceived "outdated" handset. RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has taken issue with that little report, taking the Times to task in a letter that was sent to the newspaper and published today. Read The Full Story

T-Mobile Roadmap releases Windows Phone 8X on November 14th

, Oct 12th 2012 Discuss [0]

Just incase you didn't know that the Windows Phone 8X was coming to T-Mobile, an alledged roadmap of the carrier's upcoming releases has made it clear. This roadmap from TmoNews also lists the LG Optimus L9 Android device, a Samsung Toba (possibly a tablet we've not heard of before), and a Dell BMW - this very likely being a laptop ready for action with Windows 8, starting up T-Mobile's laptop efforts again like AT&T is doing with their set of notebook releases. This list goes on as well, showing off a color refresh for the Galaxy S II and a BlackBerry Armstrong device. Read The Full Story

Why every Apple news byte seems to matter so much

, Oct 12th 2012 Discuss [0]

There’s an addiction in the modern news reporting universe online to updates on details so very small that less than 10 years ago they’d never have left their respective sources lips. With Apple, we’ve got an addiction to details on the devices we’re holding right this minute. Chances are, in fact, that you’re working with a device right now that we’ve written about in the past 24 hours, and it doesn’t just have to be an Apple device.
