Ramos is teasing a new tablet range for CES 2011, and while fresh slates won’t be in short supply at the show next week, the Ramos W15 does have something to help differentiate it. Fronted by an 8-inch, 16:9-aspect touchscreen, the W15 uses Rockchip’s new RK2918 ARM Cortex-A8 SoC which, benchmarking earlier this week showed, promises to deliver both high performance and bargain pricing.

In fact, Rockchip believe that RK29xx-based devices could retail for as little as $149, despite being able to best Snapdragon-based Android smartphones when it comes to crunching abilities, and able to do 1080p HD encoding/decoding. Rockchip’s SoCs have been found at the heart of many low-cost tablets, PMPs and smartphones, and it seems with the RK29xx series the performance will finally match the affordability.

The W15 is one of three new Ramos slates due next week, though the other two only run older Cortex-A9 based SoCs and so won’t have quite the processing grunt.

The approaching onslaught of Android tablets continues apace, with the RAmos W9 tipping its hand in the shape of some engineering prototypes. PC Online grabbed some playtime with the 7-inch Android 2.x slate – which will take on not only the iPad but Samsung’s Galaxy Tab – and confirm that it will run one of Rockchip’s newer, faster processors (tipped to be the 1GHz RK2818).

It also packs more ports than either the Galaxy Tab or the iPad, with microSD, HDMI, micro USB and a headphone socket, while the chassis is a slick (and yes, very iPad and ViewPad 7 styled) brushed aluminum and white plastic slab. Not the most imaginative design, no, but better than the usual generic Android tablets.

RAmos also seem to have done some work on the UI, adding handy touchscreen volume controls to the status bar, together with home, back and menu keys. No word on pricing or availability at this stage, but we’re hoping someone at RAmos decides to make a significant push into the US and Europe with this one.

It’s been a long time since we first saw the RAmos W7 Android MID, but the distinctive chromed device is finally shipping. Based around a 4.8-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen, a 600MHz Rockchip RK2808 processor and 8GB of storage, the really surprising part is the price: the W7 is apparently on sale in China for just 999 Yuan ($146).

For that it seems unlikely you’ll get the integrated 3G first mentioned when the W7 was announced, but even with just WiFi and Bluetooth we’re impressed. Up to 720p HD video is supported, though you’ll have to make do with Android 1.5 rather than anything newer.

At least one person has received their RAmos W7 and is sharing some first impressions in the Chinese Mumumusic forum. No word on when – or indeed if – it’ll go on sale outside of China, but the cheap Android MID market certainly does seem to be exploding.

If you’re in the market for an iPod alternative, and you don’t mind going with a brand that your friends have never heard of, how about the RAmos T11TE? The 5-inch 800 x 480 PMP may not look all that distinctive from the outside, but its Full HD 1080p output via an HDMI connection certainly singles it out from the rank & file of more mundane MP3 players.

Performing the magic inside is a Telechips TCC8900 processor and standalone DAC, and RAmos have thrown in stereo speakers and a TV output too. File compatibility is, as you might expect, broad: the T11TE will happily chomp through MPG, MPEG, DAT, VOB, MP4, MOV, AVI, DVD, ASF, WMV, MKV, TS, RM and RMVB videos and MP3, WMA, WAV, AC3, OGG and FLAC audio, together with JPEG, BMP and GIF images and certain ebook formats.

You also get a USB 2.0 OTG port and a remote control, along with a voice recording function. Storage is 16GB and there’s also a microSD card slot into which you can feasibly slot another 16GB. Not bad for $177.45 and 130 x 84 x 12 mm.

Full specifications of the RAmos Android MID are unknown, though it’s unsurprisingly expected to be ARM based rather than using x86 architecture. It’s also tipped to support 1080p MKV (H.264/VC-1), AVI (Xvid/DivX) and various other formats, with bitrates ranging from 30 to 40Mbps.

That doesn’t quite tally with what we know about the Rockchip RK2808 chipset, the original component inside their Android concept, and which was said to support 720p rather than full 1080p high-definition. Nonetheless, we won’t argue with a feature upgrade, and instead will cross our fingers and hope that the performance from the unnamed RAmos Digital Android MID matches its aesthetic promise.

RAmos PMPs have been quietly collecting plaudits for their excellent screen quality, and it seems the company might also have a future with Android, albeit unofficially. One RAmos T11 owner decided to give his WVGA touchscreen PMP a shot of Google’s open-source platform, finding the Texas Instruments 202.5MHz DaVinci CPU played quite nicely with the OS.

While the underlying OS happily resizes to take advantage of all that screen area (together with the different aspect ratio from a traditional Android phone), third-party software titles are a different matter. As you can see in the gallery below, at least one game has been designed for a cellphone screen, and so squeeze itself into a narrow column rather than occupying the entire touchscreen.

We’re also not too sure how usable the PMP would be, lacking the hardware buttons that Android demands, plus of course there’s no WiFi or 3G connection. Still, you can’t argue too much about a 720p-capable Android PMP.

We’ve mocked RAmos for their capitalization before, but we wouldn’t dare critique the 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen their T9 PMP is blessed with. The T9 takes a 24-bit, 16-million color panel, with a 400:1 contrast ratio, and slaps 16GB of storage to it, and the good people at MP4 Nation saw it as their duty to get one in for review.

Though based on a chip that’s not ostensibly “HD capable”, the T9 nonetheless supports a variety of high bitrate and lossless audio and video formats. Navigation is a slightly patchy version of the kinetic scrolling we’re used to from capacitive touchscreens, while “video and still images look jaw dropping good”.

In the end, though, with an asking price of $154.50 the T9 is a whole lot of screen for a very small amount of money. Usability may not be as seamless as something from Apple’s stable, but if mobile video is your cup of tea and high-quality your preference then the RAmos T9 seems worth considering.

The picture above and below in the gallery (of the T9 relaxing with a cat) don’t really do the PMP’s display justice, but do at least whet the appetite regarding what sort of quality we’re talking about. Full specs for the PMP are unknown, but we’re guessing at a brace of supported codecs, including lossless together with DivX.

The T9′s casing is made from aircraft-grade aluminum, with a super-toughened glass panel to protect the display and an injection-moulded rear panel with the printed text sandwiched between layers rather than printed on top. No word on pricing or availability.
