With all of the BlackBerry news coming your way today, it’s easy to forget about the BlackBerry Q10 and that it’s coming to Verizon and T-Mobile in the US later next month. Both carriers made the announcement today that the new QWERTY-equipped Q10 running BlackBerry 10 will arrive at Verizon and T-Mobile in June, although exact dates weren’t disclosed.

As for the Verizon version, customers will have their pick at either the black or white model, with the white version being a Verizon exclusive. The carrier hasn’t announced any pricing details yet for the new device, but it’s likely that the phone will sell for $250 after signing a two-year contract with Big Red.

As for T-Mobile, they also mentioned a generic June release window, and since the company recently got off the contract bandwagon, you’ll be paying full price for the BlackBerry Q10 on T-Mobile, with a $99 down payment with 24 monthly payments of $20 a piece. This means you’ll be paying $580 for the phone, but like with other pre-paid plans, there’s no contract to hold you down over two years.

As for pre-orders, Verizon said that customers will be able to reserve their own Q10 unit sometime “in the coming weeks.” T-Mobile has yet to announce any pre-order plans, but we’re guessing they’ll let customers get in on the fun early by purchasing a unit ahead of time.

It was rumored back in February that the Q10 wouldn’t launch until this month at the earliest, with June also being a possible release window, and it seems that the rumors were true. We haven’t heard anything from AT&T yet, but they’ve already confirmed that they’ll be offering the new device, so we’re guessing that Ma Bell will release the Q10 around the same time as the other carriers.

There’s already a new BlackBerry 10 device with a full QWERTY physical keyboard, but there’s another one coming to town — or at least in other towns that aren’t getting the BlackBerry Q10. The BlackBerry Q5 was announced today, and it features a lot of what the Q10 has, including the touchscreen mixed with the physical keyboard, but it’ll be catered towards emerging markets around the world.

The BlackBerry Q5 is being marketed as the low-end brother of the Q10, and it’ll sport the same 3.1-inch touchscreen as the Q10, as well as the physical keyboard that button mashers will enjoy. It’ll also come with BlackBerry 10 on board, meaning that users will have access to new features like Time Shift mode in the camera app and BlackBerry Hub.

The will be launching in three colors at launch, which include black, white, red, and pink. The Q5 is set to launch in regions of Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America starting at some point in July. The company didn’t announce a price for the new device, but we’re guessing it’ll be in the lower bracket as far as cost goes.

This is the third BlackBerry 10 device that the company has announced so far. The Q5 joins the Q10 and the flagship Z10 smartphones as BlackBerry’s trio of new devices that the company has announced this year. We know little specs about the Q5 right now, but we should be hearing more on that (as well as the price) when it gets closer to releasing later this summer.

BlackBerry also announced that the flagship Z10 in the US will be getting an update to BlackBerry 10.1 later this month. Exact dates aren’t yet known, as it seems each US carrier will have to decide for themselves on when exactly to release the update to their Z10 devices. As for what’s included in the update, it’s mostly some tweaks and performance improvements to the OS, including notification enhancements, but there’s also a new HDR mode for the camera app, as well as PIN-to-PIN messaging and email support.

This week the BlackBerry Q10 has been ushered in to the United States smartphone market with announcements from carriers across the board, starting with T-Mobile. As T-Mobile noted earlier today, they’ll be bringing pre-orders to the web starting on the 29th of April with business customers first up for in-hand action. This follows the strategy delivered with T-Mobile’s push for the BlackBerry Z10 earlier this year.

With the BlackBerry Q10, the company delivers its QWERTY smartphone experience for their full-fledged BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system launch. This device works with a display that’s a little over half the size of their Z10 model and offers a full physical keyboard in portrait mode.

The release of the BlackBerry Q10 will tend to traditional-style BlackBerry users as the original BlackBerry craze centered around physical keyboards and internet connectivity primarily. Though we’ve not yet seen a BlackBerry 10 device coming with a trackball between the display and the keyboard, we wouldn’t put it out of BlackBerry’s range of possibilities.

Have a peek at our timeline of BlackBerry Q10 bits and pieces below and get ready for the final launch of the Q10 for more than just business users. If what we’ve seen with the Z10 remains true of the Q10, this launch will be decent, if not simply satisfying for traditional BlackBerry fans.

This week a set of developers hoping to create a new way for users to use touchscreen-based keyboards have seem some significant success, finding 873% of their goal met in their first crowdfunded venture. The app environment these developers have presented is “Minuum Keyboard”, one created for Android devices initially, here showing off the entire English alphabet in a single row near the bottom of a smartphone or tablet screen. Having met their Indegogo goal several times over, they’re now headed for a June release for the software in beta.

In an interesting twist to the original goals set out by the group, this project’s development was advanced past it’s first Android confines with a WDK as well. A WDK, or Wearable Development Kit, provides the user with a keyboard for many prospective devices. In the video presentation made by the creators of this project, you’ll see this keyboard typing with 3D motion control too.

The setup for the keyboard in its initial layout comes from the QWERTY setup you’re likely making use of on your notebook, smartphone, tablet, or desktop computer right this minute. Taking these letters and smashing them down into what’s essentially one row instead of three, the space which the keyboard would otherwise have taken up is reduced significantly.

What these developers are studying and banking on is the idea that users will be able to adapt as easily as they have to the simplicity of the layout they’ve created. While like riding a bike, you can get used to typing with such a setup, there’s still a learning curve that’s being dealt with. According to the funds this team has received in support of their development thus far, there are more than enough people out there willing to give Minuum a shot!

Let us know if you’re working with the standard on-screen keyboard on your smartphone or tablet and why. Did you know you were able to change the keyboard on your device before you read this post?

[via Indegogo]

This week the BlackBerry 10 is extending its hand in both unofficial and official manners, with the BlackBerry R10 leaking as a QWERTY budget smartphone running BlackBerry 10 and the Q10 hitting pre-orders. With the BlackBerry Q10, we’ve already had a couple of looks at the device and have been no less impressed with it than we were with the Z10 – take that how you will. With the BlackBerry R10 it would appear that the company is indeed going back on its assurance that they’d never create another budget phone again – here’s BlackBerry 10 for everyone!

Below you’ll see an image presented by BlackBerryOS who say they’re all about the idea of it being a new R-Series BlackBerry device called the BB10 Curve. This smartphone is said to come with less RAM, less processor power, and not quite as much excellence on the whole. But you’ll still be working with BlackBerry 10, so perhaps it’s not all bad – and the price will certainly be affordable!

Then there’s the top-notch BlackBerry Q10, the QWERTY keyboard version of the Z10, BlackBerry 10′s heroes the both of them. Have a peek at our BlackBerry Q10 hands-on right this minute to understand the power. Today’s news includes the first official pre-orders from Carphone Warehouse in the UK – that includes T-Mobile, Three, EE, O2, and TalkMobile.

Have a peek at the timeline below of recent BlackBerry goings-on to see how this BlackBerry 10 universe is expanding at an interesting rate. We’ll be having our own look at the Q10 in the near future in a full review – then the R-Series as well if it does end up existing on the market, yes indeed. BlackBerry 10 makes its big push!

Nokia may not have ruled out a QWERTY Windows Phone for its portfolio, but the chances of a device with a physical keyboard are shrinking, according to smartphone chief Jo Harlow. Speaking to SlashGear at Mobile World Congress this week, where Nokia took its Windows Phone 8 range to five devices with the addition of the Lumia 520 and Lumia 720, Harlow admitted that the company’s reluctance to revisit physical text entry options was down to a fear of being left on the wrong side of the mobile industry’s momentum – again.

“It’s really a question, “is there a large enough audience out there?” or “are the people who have QWERTY today intending to move in this direction?” and we really don’t want to be on the wrong side of that movement” Harlow, executive vice president of Smart Devices, told us. That’s despite a clear message from some users that a physical keyboard is high on their list of priorities.

“We still continue to evaluate because we do get the request a lot, and it’s funny that there are a lot of people that absolutely want to use a physical keyboard, they like the security of that” Harlow conceded. “Even though, I think the virtual keyboard of Windows Phone is phenomenal, especially the level of autocorrect, it’s really, really good.”

Unsurprisingly, Nokia isn’t ruling out any particular device, no matter how great the abundance of caution over QWERTY today. That means the market reception to BlackBerry’s upcoming Q10, the first BlackBerry 10 device to include one of the Canadian company’s legendary thumbboards, is likely to be of particular interest to Nokia as it figures out its next steps in Windows Phone.

“It’s something that we’re constantly looking at: next form-factors, what should we do next” Harlow told us, though pointed out that even those who really do want a physical ‘board are a dying breed. “One of the things that we see is that the number of people who are using, or are interested in using, a QWERTY continues to decline.”

Today SwiftKey 4 has been revealed, integrating the abilities of what we’ve seen very recently with the beta of SwiftKey Flow and a collection of new features we’ve never seen before. What this app represents is a next-level Android-based on-screen keyboard experience, complete with word predictions, a multi-tiered learning interface, and now the ability to “flow” from key to key for typing without ever lifting a finger.

In the first big ad spot for this new version of SwiftKey, you’ll see each of the new amazing features available with the system. Here you’ll see examples of the 60 languages you can have active at once, you’ll see the several different keyboard skins you can use, and you’ll see the fabulous Flow of words being typed with a multi-colored trail of accuracy following your finger. This system continues to use an ever-upgrading award-winning prediction engine unique to SwiftKey to learn the language you use in a unique way.

We’ve also got a rather simple demonstration of flowing in-action on an Android device. At the moment this software is, yes, available only on Android devices, and most certainly does make your Android experience a much more readable one. While we don’t use the prediction engine as much as we could have in the demo, keep an eye on it – it’s smart! SwiftKey’s learning engine connects with Gmail, Facebook, SMS, and more to follow what you type, understanding and archiving it all away so it knows what you’ll type next – you type the same stuff all the time!

Again at this point you should note that there’s only one app, with SwiftKey Flow being a feature of SwifKey 4 – you’ll be downloading SwiftKey 4 soon! SwiftKey 4 offers several different ways to type with SwiftKey Flow – one of them being the three SwiftKey Flow Candidates you get when you hit backspace after you’ve completed a word – three options for alternate words are given. Candidates are also given if you tap any word you’ve completed in the past.

Another feature in SwiftKey Flow typing in SwiftKey 4 is mid-word completion, allowing you to see word predictions and let your finger up from the screen before you’ve completed the word – see what you need, just lift your finger! After you’ve typed (or had predicted) a word in a sentence, you’ll also see next-word predictions based on your language patterns. You can type whole sentences with just predictions based on what you’ve said in the past!

Berry flavor included – tasty!

The style you use to type is also automatically selected in this release. In the past with SwiftKey you were asked to select either “rapid” or “precise” – now all that’s done for you. The 60 languages mentioned above includes a selection of additions made new in this release: Sudanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Albanian, Bosnian, and Javanese. Layouts have also been improved on the keyboard for both Russian and Korean language sets.

You’ll be able to download SwiftKey 4 and SwiftKey Tablet 4 from the Google Play app store inside the SwiftKey section – apps developed by the official SwiftKey team. If you’re a legacy user, you’ll find that SwiftKey will upgrade to SwiftKey 4 for free. If you’re a new user, a promotional price of $1.99 USD has been placed on the app for a limited time – grab it right this minute!

Today we’ve seen quite the showing by the company formerly known as Research in Motion, starting with no less than a complete re-naming of the company to “BlackBerry”. If that gesture weren’t enough to convince the public that the group was and I all-in on their 2013 bid to necessitate the BlackBerry universe, two new devices and a fully functional reboot of the operating system were certainly meant to. We’ve got hands-on with both of the newly delivered smart devices, accessories they’ll be using, and details on the whole day ready for your perusal right this minute.

You’ll want to start your journey with a few news bits appearing before the main event in NYC this morning, with the company still known as RIM way back then (two days before today) showing movie and music deals galore for BlackBerry 10. BlackBerry 10 was also granted the ability yesterday to do 12-person video chat with ooVoo technology as detailed by the company once again. Just this morning we also saw BlackBerry World gaining loads of new apps and games prior to the official launch of BlackBerry 10.

RIM’s European Managing Director Stephen Bates was put in the hot seat twice this morning as well, getting out some answers that will help BlackBerry 10 along in its immediate future and a few answers that made the company look rather unsure of itself. Leaks of BlackBerry Z10 prices began to flow right as the main event began, with quite a few mobile carriers having added their 2-cents since (this post is continuously being updated, mind you). Verizon made their presence known as one of the first groups to reveal pricing for one of the two devices revealed today.

The actual BlackBerry 10 event began with the President and CEO of the company known as RIM, then BlackBerry, mister Thorsten Heins congratulating those that worked on BlackBerry 10 and held fast with BlackBerry over the past two years. Two years ago was when the process to create BlackBerry 10 began, and as Heins assured the world this morning, they’ll be here for some time to come: Today is not the finish line, it’s just the starting line.”

The rebranding of RIM to BlackBerry should be seen as nearly as important from an advertising and image perspective as the launch of BlackBerry 10. With BlackBerry replacing RIM, there’s now “One Brand. One promise.” BlackBerry 10 has been assured to be “re-designed, re-engineered, re-invented” and ready for action in 2013.

We saw the official announcement of the BlackBerry Z10 as well as the official reveal of the Q10. The first is a 4.2-inch touchscreen display-toting BlackBerry 10 device devoid of physical keyboard keys while the second is a more “classic” design with the widest physical keyboard interface the company has ever delivered on a smartphone.

We’ve got BlackBerry Q10 hands-on for all you lovers of the keyboard and the touchscreen. We’ve got BlackBerry Z10 hands-on for all you lovers of the full-touch interface. We’ve got BlackBerry 10-era accessories hands-on for all you lovers of holsters, speakers, and battery chargers for the future!

BlackBerry 10 has been announced to be launching with 70,000 apps right out of the box including big names like Angry Birds and Skype. Angry Birds, in fact, has been pushed as a free app for early adopters and will be coming to the market with all of its back-catalog titles as well!

Then there’s one of the oddest announcements of the day, that being Musician Alicia Keys being revealed as the new BlackBerry Global Creative Director. At the moment this appears to be a move not unlike Will.i.am joining Intel as Director of Creative Innovation or Futura 2000 representing Samsung. The celebrity / artist / entertainer cross-branding continues!

Have a peek at our ever-expanding BlackBerry 10 tag portal for more information into the future and stick around for our imminent full review of the BlackBerry Z10!

This week the folks at BlackBerry (formerly known as RIM) have revealed BlackBerry 10 and one of two new hero devices for the software: the BlackBerry Q10. This device has a combination of two user interfaces, one a touchscreen, the other a classic BlackBerry keyboard. The details surrounding this device have been “leaked” several times before this first official reveal, but the final specifications have (as we’re finding here) never been perfectly nailed by any one leak or tip – stainless steel, edge to edge glass, and a full BlackBerry 10 experience await you!

The back of the device works with a three-dimensional glass-weave structure that makes the feel of the device wholly unique. The keypad is the widest that the company has ever delivered, and the AMOLED display is what the company calls their “best yet” for brightness and excellence in delivering the content you’ll be working with in BlackBerry 10. WIth a dual-core processor under the hood and the largest battery inside that the company has ever put in a BlackBerry smartphone, you’ll also be rolling out with high power all day long.

This machine will be delivering the first full BlackBerry 10 experience with the classic keyboard and touchscreen at once in the world. While the final details will be revealed soon (stay tuned to this post and our upcoming hands-on as well), you’ll do well to check out our timeline below as well as SlashGear’s lovely BlackBerry 10 tag hub. This experience is one of two that BlackBerry needs to key in on as perfect – it’s all or nothing right here in the first part of 2013!

Note in the timeline below that RIM has re-branded themselves as BlackBerry and BlackBerry alone as well, this solidifying the message for the world and showing us that they mean business with both BlackBerry software and hardware from this point forward. Also keep an eye on the CEO of BlackBerry this week as he continues to champion the platform now that it’s out in the wild, and let us know if you’re planning on working with the full-touch Z10, the touch/keyboard experience of the Q10, or if you’ll be waiting for the next generation of BlackBerry 10 devices after this!

A device with only a Samsung code-name GT-B7810 has appeared with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a lovely full QWERTY keyboard in a set of leaked photos. This machine looks to be the next step in an evolution from the original Samsung Galaxy M Pro released in 2012, complete with some metal (or metallic) Android menu keys still running strong. This device will likely take on the soon-to-be-existing BlackBerry 10 with a rather business-minded body ready for action.

This machine has been tipped by Blog of Mobile to be carrying with it a fabulous 480 x 360 resolution display across 2.7-inches of screen. The M Pro 2 (as we’re calling it for now) will be bringing with it a 5 megapixel camera on the back, no camera on the front, and the ability to connect along HSPA 3G (for the time being). We’ll likely see this device hitting US shores by Springtime with 4G LTE connectivity for AT&T, and T-Mobile will probably want a piece of it too!

Inside you’ll find a generous amount of battery time with a 1200mAh li-ion unit, a micro-SIM card slot, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. This means it’ll not be working with the newest Android version 4.2 (or even the slightly older 4.1, both of them called Jelly Bean), but again, may work with a newer OS by the time its released. Expect this device to be out inside 2013, but don’t open your heart to it too wide: it’s been milling around the FCC since June of 2012.

Meanwhile Samsung is certainly set to continue to take the Android universe by storm with a wave of releases throughout 2013 starting (very possibly) at CES 2013. This event will be a monster (as it always is) with releases from many top hardware and software companies across the board – and SlashGear will be there with bells on! Follow us all week long in our CES 2013 tag portal without a doubt!

There appears to be a whole new double-down in the BlackBerry 10 universe this week with a leaked image of what’s being called the BlackBerry X10. This device sits in a photo near the BlackBerry Z10 all-touch smartphone as well as the BlackBerry Dev Alpha C smartphone given to 1,500 developers earlier this year. This photo is fairly clear, but of course completely unofficial and unconfirmed by RIM.

What we’re seeing here is a device that’s extremely similar in styling to the HTC device revealed in 2011 that went by the name ChaCha – have a peek at our HTC ChaCha review from June of 2011 to have a peek. We’ve also got a photo of the ChaCha below – look similar to you? Both devices are said to be working with full QWERTY physical keyboard action as well as a full touchscreen interface – this being great for the new workings of BlackBerry 10.

It’s not everyday that we see a leak so substantial as the one we’re seeing today in a single photo – and what with previous leaks of the other two devices we’re seeing here, substantiation is a near-fix. This should very well be the image that allows you to see the imminent future of the BlackBerry 10 platform, at least at the start. Both QWERTY and full-touch are onboard and it’s about to get wild!

You’ll be able to see the full experience starting on the 30th of January when we head to the official BlackBerry 10 event. This event will have us getting hands-on time with the final market build of the software as well as our first official glimpses as the first wave of BlackBerry 10 hardware from RIM. Stick with SlashGear for all your up-to-the-second hands-on in-person coverage from here until then – and beyond!

Motorola announced that the PHOTON Q 4G LTE would be coming sooner rather than later, and now the company has confirmed that the handset will be available to pre-order starting from today, with the phone expected to hit retail shelves this Sunday on August 19th. The phone commands the typical $200 price tag on a new two-year contract, and packs a five row horizontal QWERTY keyboard in conjunction with the latest internals.

The PHOTON Q comes with a dual-core processor clocked at 1.5Ghz, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, a microSD card slot for an additional 32GB of storage, and an eight megapixel camera with 1080p video recording. All of it is packed into a 4.3-inch qHD display along with LTE and NFC connectivity.

The smartphone also has world roaming capabilities, allowing you to take advantage of HSPA networks across the globe. Careful, though, as your carrier will more than likely charge ridiculous fees for any data used while roaming. It might be wise to see if the SIM card slot is unlocked, in which case you can pick up a local SIM and save some cash in the process.

All the usual radios are onboard as well, such as Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi b/g/n, with the battery carrying a capacity of 1,785mAh. As is increasingly the case with smartphones these days, it’s a sealed in battery. Software out of the box is Ice Cream Sandwich, but you’ll have to make do with the minor modifications that Motorola has added to the OS. The handset has been certified for environmentally rough situations too, so it should survive a few knocks and tumbles.

T-Mobile has some new myTouch products up for grabs, with the two new handsets being made by Huawei. The myTouch and myTouch Q largely have the same specifications, but the Q comes with a slide-out landscape QWERTY keyboard for those of you who are serious texting fiends. Best of all, they’re both pretty affordable at $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate.

Both phones come with a 4-inch WVGA screen, 1.4Ghz single-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of storage with a microSD card slot, 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording, HSPA+, and a 1,500mAh battery. The myTouch comes with a standard design, while the myTouch Q will come with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that will add some additional thickness. Unfortunately, both phones are running Gingerbread.

T-Mobile is shipping both phones with a Genius Button, powered by Nuance’s Dragon dictation. That gives customers voice control and voice search options, and the company has tweaked the app drawer too, letting you see the most recently downloaded apps. The myTouch will be offered in black or dark red while the myTouch Q will be available in black or white. Both phones should be available in T-Mobile retail stores starting from August 8th.

Kyocera has outed its latest Android smartphone, the Kyocera Rise, a four-row QWERTY slider targeting the budget market with Ice Cream Sandwich on a 1GHz processor. The Rise has a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 IPS LCD touchscreen and 512MB of RAM, and uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon MSM8655 with 2GB of ROM space. There’s also a 3.2-megapixel camera with LED flash and 30fps video recording.

Connectivity is for Verizon and other CDMA carriers, with the Rise having EVDO Rev.A support along with WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. There’s also USB, a microSD card slot and the usual gamut of sensors – accelerometer, digital compass, proximity, ambient light and GPS – though no GSM support for international use.

It measures in at 4.44 x 2.38 x 0.56 inches when closed, tipping the scales at 5.54 oz. Aesthetically, there’s something of Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Mini pro to the Rise, at least to our eyes, but the Kyocera is a little larger than the tiny Sony.

Kyocera isn’t saying how much the Rise will cost, and nor has it confirmed which carriers might be offering the QWERTY smartphone in the US. It will go on sale in the second half of 2012, however.

Next there’s some big time cameras coming out this spring, here with the Olympus OM-D E-M5 a bit of retro on the outside and power on the inside. For the mobile world, get ready for the Nokia customization party to commence as they ax thousands of jobs – and rely entirely on Windows Phone for power.

Motorola has dropped two monsters upon us, one of them the Motorola MOTOLUXE for the mid range and the other the fourth in a generation. That’s right, it’s the DROID 4 from Motorola complete with a side-lit keyboard to keep you QWERTY fans happy all night long!
All Android devices of the future will be working with Google Chrome if they wish, but none will have Flash integrated as per the plan.

There’s also an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording, 16GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot, along with Mirror Mode for outputting the display on a TV. Plug in that way, and you can access the full Firefox browser and use the multi-window Webtop app; you can also dock the DROID 4 with the Lapdock 100 or Lapdock 500 Pro.

Despite the specs, the DROID 4 by Motorola is only 1/2-inch thick. It has mobile hotspot support for up to eight WiFi-tethered devices, and MotoCast for streaming multimedia and documents from your home or work computer.

The Verizon DROID 4 by Motorola will go on sale “in the coming weeks”; the carrier is yet to announce pricing, though we’re guessing it’ll be $200-250 with a new, two-year agreement.

Samsung throws in a QWERTY remote control for operating the inTouch, navigating its menu and your Skype contacts list, and searching for URLs and YouTube videos. Still image recording is supported, and there’s weather information and Google News too.

A USB port allows you to hook up a digital camera or memory card, and view photos stored on that too; alternatively you can upload them, through the inTouch, to YouTube, Flickr and other sites. Connectivity with a TV is via a single HDMI cable.

The Samsung inTouch SNH-5010N will go on sale in March, priced at $199.99. Considering how much Cisco was asking for its Umi system, that seems like something of a bargain to us.

This week the the group TouchType Ltd, best known for their keyboard application by the name of SwiftKey – as found on the Android Market this week on sale for 10 cents, mind you – have attained $2.4 million USD (£1.5m) in Series A financing to “accelerate consumer and OEM adoption.” This investment is sure to bring the keyboard app developers a whole new round of investments to bring the typing solution to the forefront of the Android mobile operating system world. The investment has been lead by Octopus Investments and will ultimately improve one of the world’s most popular Android apps to a whole new level of excellent.

Needless to say, your humble narrator has used this keyboard in the past and each time a new keyboard is tested, SwiftKey is certainly one of the best to beat. What this new investment will do, says TouchType, is help them to increase their worldwide presence, especially in the USA and Asia, and will strengthen their commercial, executive, and technical teams. As far as how this will improve your app experience – plans are now in place (not that they weren’t before) to improve the capabilities and features of all SwiftKey products and the Fluency program that makes the whole speech prediction function in the keyboard do its thing.

More important than any of this, mind you, is the following quote from TouchType CEO Jon Reynolds (pictured in the main photo above aside TouchType CTO Ben Medlock), which notes how they’ve secured manufacturer deals to have SwiftKey pre-installed on future devices:

“We’ve seen tremendous consumer adoption of our SwiftKey keyboards on Android, and have secured significant OEM deals to pre-‐install our technology. While SwiftKey has already received widespread praise, we’re always striving to improve our products in response to our customers’ needs. We’re also planning to enter new vertical markets in the New Year, where faster and more accurate text entry can drive significant benefits.” – Reynolds

Check out our review and update [SwiftKey portal] for all the information you might need on the apps you’re about to download if you’ve never tried them before. Then look to 2012 (or perhaps even 2011) to see a whole line of Android devices with SwiftKey on them right out of the box! Go for the cyan on black!

When it comes to the DROID line as carried by Verizon, there’s no knowing which manufacturer is going to get to have their hardware graced with the name, but usually it’s Motorola – and here in the DROID 4, the trend continues. What you’re going to get in this several-times half-leaked device is a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, the newest version of Motorola’s custom user interface over Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz. This device is of course also running on Verizon’s 4G LTE network.

You may remember from earlier this morning a release of some information on a couple of Motorola tablets by the name of XyBoard – wild in both name an shape. Well that wasn’t all CNET saw, folks, there’s another device from that same release, and it goes by the name of DROID 4. Get your pants out of a bind, folks, this is the first dual-core QWERTY on LTE, and it’s got those nice Motorola corners!

Once you’ve slide the keyboard in and out a few thousand times, you’ll also notice that you’ve got an 8 megapixel camera on the back capable of 1080p video recording, a front-facing camera for video chat, and enough room inside to store at least a few full-length movies and a couple apps too at 16GB internal memory. You’ll be working with 1GB of RAM, a 4-inch qHD display, and a brand new chassis fitting right in with the rest of the newest Motorola smartphone and tablet line. It’s all in the corners I tell you!

SO for those of you that need a QWERTY keyboard, this is more than likely going to be your best choice if you’re also a lover of the LTE network Verizon provides. We’ve got a review of an alternate device along those lines by the name of Samsung Stratosphere, but you’d be well to note that while that device only has a single-core processor, the DROID 4 has at least twice the power with its own dual-core. The choice is clear, make it now! Or forever learn how to stop using the QWERTY keyboards because they are so, so aesthetically displeasing it makes me have a mental breakdown.

Android and Samsung have such an all-encompassing strategy going on as of late that every tier of the smartphone market is saturated with a combination of the two, from the top all the way to the bottom – a good example of how to do the bottom RIGHT is in the device you see here, the Samsung DoubleTime. What we’re going to compare this device to are a few other similarly-stacked devices on AT&T, but you’ll understand before the end of this that AT&T’s selection of Android devices relies so heavily on top-tier smartphones that the Samsung DoubleTime may well have a market to do well in. Imagine that!

Before we go into the photos and the dropping of the knowledge on why you should or should not purchase this device in detail, have a peek at this hands-on look at the DoubleTime aside several other Android devices – compare and contrast time!

Hardware

This little stormtrooper of the device has the oddest set of design cues, starting with the fact that it’s got pink accents on the physical Android menu buttons. Very strange choice by Samsung if I do say so myself. There’s a silvery plastic bar above the keys, Samsung and AT&T logos on the front, earpiece, and both proximity and light sensors. The device opens up like a clamshell the long way and sits at either a 135 or 180 degree angle when opened. Inside you’ll find the second of two 320 x 480 pixel displays on one side, a full QWERTY keyboard on the other side with what you’ll find is the reason for the pink accents on the outside: pink accents on the inside.

So thought it may be politically incorrect of me to assume that this device is aimed at the feminine ladies and gentlemen amongst us, I must say that a Star Wars fan looking for the perfect smartphone to go with his or her stormtrooper outfit should think twice about choosing the DoubleTime. That is of course unless they’re one of those fancy pink-painted troops, then this is the device for you!

Otherwise the device is certainly cute, and dare I say it does feel relatively tough despite its mainly plastic chassis. One thing is certain, the whole rig is streets ahead of the Samsung Gravity Smart, a rather irritably low-quality device currently housed at T-Mobile. It just feels like Samsung put a bit more effort into the DoubleTime, if you know what I mean.

Software

You’ll be running Android 2.2 Froyo with essentially no changes made from its original form – the only additions that either the manufacturer OR the carrier has made is a couple of AT&T applications that appear on the vast majority of the handsets released by them. Samsung has essentially abstained from adding anything in the way of software here, so it’s basically all Google. That means just two screens of apps out of the box with all the more space for you to fill the device up with your own apps from the Android Market.

Inside you’ll also find a 600 MHz single-core processor from Qualcomm that may seem quick to you if you’ve never so much as laid a hand on a smartphone before, but not so perfectly hot if you’re moving from any other Android, BlackBerry, or Symbian device. I won’t even mention iPhone because everyone knows that there’s essentially just one model, and it only goes one speed: quick. You’ll be able to play quite a few basic games on this device and yes, stream some video, but you’ll primarily want to stick to things like social media, web browsing, texting, and calling. Call quality is just fine, by the way. Gone are the days of tin-can calls and bad reception, no worries here.

Camera

Not many nice things can be said about the camera here, especially since there’s only one and it’s a mere 3.2 megapixels, so I won’t say much at all. Instead here are a couple of examples of what you’ll end up capturing with this shooter which sits at 320 x 280 pixels for video and wont afford you much more than OK photos for your wallpaper on the device itself. Don’t expect many keepers here, is what I’m saying.

Battery

The battery should give you around 8 hours regardless of if you’re using the outside or the inside display since they’re essentially the same exact thing for drain and you can only have one on at a time. If you decide you want to watch video streaming from the internet with YouTube or any of the few streaming video apps available for the now-old Android 2.2 Froyo like Netflix – get ready for the death drop in battery time. We’re talking less than 2 hours, a couple of TV shows if you’re lucky.

That said, normal activity like texting your pals, updating Facebook and Google+, and playing a tiny game or two will give you enough battery life that you’ll only have to charge it when you go to sleep and again when you’re in the car.

Wrap-Up

While this smartphone is far and away, not even in the same ballpark, basically not even the same sport as the top tier smartphones also made by Samsung such as the Galaxy S II or even the top of middle-tier devices like the Samsung Captivate Glide (also pictured below), it does hold some sway in its own lower level of internet-capable handsets. This device looks rather unique with its mostly white and black chassis and pink accents, and the double touch displays are certainly a nice touch.

Get this phone if you’re the type of person who only plans on using this first-timer smartphone for email and Facebook posting. If you plan on racking up the data with a more costly plan per month, do yourself a favor and spend a bit more money at the outset so you don’t end up crying when you’re dropping loads of cash per month on a device that’s nowhere near the quality that the data costs should provide.

T-Mobile today released the pricing and date of availability for its myTouch and myTouch Q smartphones. The carrier officially announced the two handsets earlier this month as new additions to its myTouch lineup of Android devices. Both are made by LG and will be available starting November 2, priced moderately at $79.99 with a new twp-year service agreement.

The T-Mobile myTouch and myTouch Q share very similar specs with each running Android 2.3 Gingerbread on a 1GHz processor along with a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and front-facing camera. The myTouch features a 3.8-inch display and relies on the Swipe virtual keyboard, while the myTouch Q features a smaller 3.5-inch display, but has the addition of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Both smartphones will ship with the Netflix app pre-installed as well as integrated T-Mobile TV capabilities. The two devices will be available online starting November 2, priced at $79.99 each after a mail-in rebate and with a new two-year service agreement. Starting November 9, they’ll both head to T-Mobile stores.

The next step forward in having the mobile world adopt a connection speed isn’t always necessarily straight to the newest high for specs, and the Samsung Stratosphere is here to prove it. Fitted with a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard complete with Android menu shortcuts and coming in as the second Samsung handset to work on Verizon’s 4G LTE network, the Samsung Stratosphere isn’t here to win any benchmark wars with its single-core 1GHz processor and relatively thick chassis, but it IS the only 4G LTE device on the market with a full QWERTY keyboard, and the 4-inch 800 × 480 Super AMOLED display doesn’t hurt none either. Will the Stratosphere access a market just waiting to be tapped? We shall see!

Hardware

This is a device that someone who seeks only the 4G LTE Verizon connection speed and absolutely cannot live without a full QWERTY keyboard that slides out from under the display will be picking up. Samsung makes a 4.3-inch device running on 4G LTE with the same amount of pixels and the same screen technology as well – no QWERTY, but four physical buttons below the display – that’s the DROID CHARGE – it essentially has the same 1GHz processor as well. So which is best? Whichever one you want the most, of course.

The Samsung Stratosphere is a rather bulky device at 14mm thick, and the back of the device’s full-body battery cover, though formed rather nicely, is a hard plastic that makes the entire device a bit slippery to hold. Once the keyboard is slid out, and it does slide out nicely mind you, you’ll have no trouble hanging on for some physical typing and navigating with the up/down/left/right keys.

So what you’ve got here is a real competition between the Stratosphere and the Pantech Breakout if you want two devices that cost nearly the same. You’ve got the same 800 x 480 display at 4-inches (without Super AMOLED) and another 5-megapixel camera, a 1GHz processor (from Qualcomm this time) and some rather unique looking physical buttons. Pantech also provides a rather unique look at Android with their own user interface, this compared to the TouchWiz you’ll see in the hands-on look at the Stratosphere here makes for an interesting one to one:

Again take a look at the Pantech Breakout in our full review of the device from a few weeks ago. There are of course some other more expensive and higher-end choices for LTE if you feel like dropping a few more bucks: LG Revolution, HTC ThunderBolt (the first LTE smartphone,) and the DROID BIONIC, currently the only dual-core processor toting LTE device. Also of course you could go full blast with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus that’ll be out next month.

Samsung runs a user interface over stock Android that’s called TouchWiz. This iteration of TouchWiz is not the most advanced of all Samsung devices released thus far, that’d be the Galaxy S II here in the USA, but it’s fairly decent. It’s slick, customizable to a degree, and has that ever-so-enjoyable puzzle unlock that you may have heard of if you’ve ever seen TouchWiz in action before. What it consists of is a set of puzzle pieces running across your screen, each of them corresponding to a phone call you’ve had, a message, or any number of alerts, including a simple path to your homescreen – the rest, when pulled and placed in the correct open puzzle piece hole, lead to the corresponding app.

Inside you’ll also find not one, but two docking modes, first one that works with your basic desk dock here:

Then another that works with an automobile dock:

Both work rather well and set you up for a perfectly legit mini version of what you get with the DROID RAZR (another LTE dual-core device coming to Verizon soon) in its desktop mode. There are a few enterprise features in the software pack here that includes what Verizon calls the “most comprehensive mobile implementation” of Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), B2B-enabled connectivity services, and some Sybase Afaria for remote device management as well. Need a BlackBerry alternative for your home business? This may well be it.

Camera

The camera on the front of the device is capable of a fairly standard 1.3 megapixels of quality that you’ll basically just be using for video chat, while the back of the device’s 5 megapixel camera can also record 720p quality video. Have a peek at a video recorded at top quality here, a photo at top quality as well, and a couple more photos in the gallery at the bottom of this post – you’ll know em because they’ll be the only ones that don’t contain the phone itself as an image in them.

Battery

Like several Samsung devices we’ve seen very recently, Galaxy S II devices included, the standby time on this smartphone appears to be pretty good. It’s certainly not the best handler of battery on earth, (that’s still the Galaxy S II, for those of you counting,) but it’s pretty good. Have a peek at this example of a normal medium-use day of the device here:

Connection Speed

One of the biggest selling points on this device will be the connection speed, as it’s one of less than 10 devices on the market today to be able to connect at Verizon’s 4G LTE speeds. Have a peek here at some speed tests done here in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where LTE speeds are real:

Wrap-Up

This device represents a unique choice, as all good smartphones should. Again, this is the only 4G LTE device on the market with a full QWERTY keyboard on it, and it’s the second of two Samsung smartphones on the market today running on that same network. This device is neither the most powerful nor the most sleek device in any category, but it DOES have a keyboard, I assure you. Have a peek at the video and the photos above and below, and you tell me: will you slide with LTE?

You didn’t think the portrait-style QWERTY smartphone was dead, did you? No way, Jose, it’s just beginning! Here with the Motorola Admiral, an otherwise mid-range device with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a single-core 1.2GHz processor, and a 3.1-inch VGA touchscreen, is the first time a smartphone is available with Direct Connect. And not only that, the specs are what Motorola is calling “military spec tough.” This device will be available on the 23rd of October for $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate via reward card, November 13th in stores — is this your new work phone?

This device has the ability to work with Direct Connect, what the first carrier of this device calls its gold-standard push-to-talk capabilities, and meets military standard 810G for dust, shock, solar radiation, vibration, low pressure, and temperatures of all kinds. The display is made of Corning Gorilla Glass – only diamonds, more Gorilla Glass, or really sharp puppy teeth can bust it. What we’ve got to ask here is of Motorola – is this combined with the Motorola DROID RAZR the start of a tough lineup throughout the future?

Because check it out if you haven’t already: the DROID RAZR is made of mostly metal, Kevlar plating and Gorilla Glass on the front. It’s both super thin and nearly indestructible for your day to day activities – and here comes to the Admiral, a device we first heard about several weeks ago in name only, now we see that it’s not only inexpensive, its tough as nails! This look like a device you might pick up?

Since all the way back on the 23rd of August we’ve been waiting for the BlackBerry Curve 9360, and today we get to see it popping up first on T-Mobile. This device is one of several BlackBerry devices to be the first to feature both the latest BlackBerry 7 mobile operating system and the BlackBerry 7 Webkit-browser. This particular curve is designed specifically to intercept those customers around the world looking to upgrade from a feature phone OR update their already-loved earlier model Curve. Look like the BlackBerry for you?

If this is your first BlackBerry, you should know that not all BlackBerries come in one one black berry color – this 9360 comes in either black or a lovely merlot. You’ll get a 2.4-inch display, a full QWERTY keypad, the classic BlackBerry setup with the display sitting to the north of the keypad, the full device in a portrait configuration. You’ll also find that this keypad is one of the most comfortable to use in BlackBerry history, the spacing and the curvature of the setup optimized for your fingers to tap tap tap away on. You’ll get your ever-present navigation track-pad and four BlackBerry menu buttons as well, no worries!

Inside you’ll find the latest release of BBM BlackBerry Messenger, this version now connected to a range of other apps including the now ultra-popular Foursquare, all this through a new BBM Connected app. On the back of the device you’ll find a 5-megapixel camera with flash as well. A simple device with essential bits all around.

This BlackBerry, the Curve 9360, will be available in an exclusive pre-sale for T-Mobile business customers beginning the same day this post is posted, September 21, 2011. The black color finish will be available nationwide starting on September 28th, while the merlot color finish will be released on October 12th. This device will cost $79.99 after a $50 mail-in-rebate card, all this attached to a 2-year service agreement and qualifying classic voice and data plan.

Can you barely contain yourself?!

The videos were quickly set to private, but that’s not before a snapshot was taken of one of the videos showing the two phones side-by-side.

AndroidGuys caught a quick glance at the clips before they were set to private and noted that the file names indicated that one phone was an all-touch device while the other included a QWERTY keyboard. It’s believed that the devices will be called the T-Mobile myTouch by LG and the T-Mobile myTouch Q by LG.

Currently, T-Mobile has the myTouch 4G Slide from HTC, which launched back in July. These two new myTouch devices may be the codenamed LG Maxx and Maxx Q devices referenced in the leaked T-Mobile roadmap, which indicates that they should be launching in early November.

Motorola has just announced a new Android smartphone called the Motorola Pro+. This handset runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and sports a portrait QWERTY—a form factor that says it’s going after the BlackBerry-toting business crowd. The device is set to launch in Europe and Asia in October and could land on T-Mobile here in the states.

The Motorola Pro+ is powered by a 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM. It features a 3.1-inch 480×640 touchscreen protected by Gorilla Glass and sports a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash. And although the phone has only been confirmed for Europe and Asia, it does come in two variants, one of which supports 14.4Mbps HSPA on AWS, hinting that it may be heading to T-Mobile.

Portrait-oriented full physical QWERTY smartphones for Android are less common than the popular full touchscreen handsets, but the form factor proves to still be popular for business users that require lots of typing, texting, and sending emails while on the go. Samsung will also be offering a portrait QWERTY Android smartphone for business users as revealed by their recent naming scheme revision.

The HP Pre 3 launched early last week in Europe as HP’s first major webOS flagship phone, but it was received with very little fanfare. And before it even had a chance to arrive stateside, plans for the device in the US are now axed following Thursday’s surprising announcement that HP will be discontinuing all webOS hardware.

The Pre 3 was to be one of two webOS smartphones from HP, the other being the pint-sized Veer. It sports a form factor similar to its Palm Pre and Pre 2 predecessors with a vertical slide-out QWERTY keyboard that’s also the largest of the Pre series. It has a 3.6-inch 480×800 display, a 5-megapixel camera, front-facing VGA camera, and a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor.

In Europe it’s currently retailing for 349 euros ($505) in France and 299 pounds ($490) in the UK. But much like the fire sale for the HP TouchPad, the Pre 3 is set to get a tremendous discount. The unlocked version will go on sale for $75 unlocked, although exactly when the sale will kick off has not yet been confirmed.

And although the phone will not launch in the US, the unlocked version from Europe can still work on AT&T and T-Mobile’s networks but will face 3G limitations due to lack of support for the appropriate network bands.

RIM had just announced earlier this week that it will be launching seven new BlackBerry OS 7 smartphones this year in an attempt to assuage the concerns of shareholders. They include the BlackBerry Bold 9900, the BlackBerry Monza, and the BlackBerry Torch 2, which has just passed through the FCC.

The BlackBerry Torch 2 is listed as model number RDM71UW in the FCC documents where it’s shown to support GSM 850 an 1900 bands along with WCDMA bands II and V. This confirms that the device will be heading to AT&T, which isn’t too surprising since its predecessor was also carried by AT&T. However, there’s no mention as to whether the device will support HSPA+ or have NFC.

Images and specs for the device have turned up before, including a hands-on video. It’s said to be a big improvement on the original BlackBerry Torch, now with a 3.2-inch touchscreen display that has a 640×480 resolution, running on a 1.2GHz processor with 768MB RAM, 8GB internal memory, and a 5-megapixel camera.

T-Mobile’s myTouch 4G Slide, also known as the HTC Doubleshot, is now rumored for a July 27 release. Back when T-Mobile’s roadmap leaked, it was believed that the device would hit stores by July 6. FCC documents showed up on June 1 that further supported an imminent launch. But now a purported screenshot of an updated list of T-Mobile launch dates has surfaced and reveals that the myTouch 4G Slide may have to wait another three weeks.

Although no official announcements have been made on the device, leaks over the past few months have revealed that the T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide has some pretty slick features for those desiring a device with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The handset is expected to have a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with dual LED flash.

It should come running Android 2.3 Gingerbread with HTC Sense on top. Images have leaked of the device in the wild and those that had a chance to play with it say that the keyboard is “amazing” and the phone is “surprisingly fast.” It’s also said to be big heavier than the T-Mobile G2 while the keyboard has a similar feel.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the cool, fresh, and QWERTY toting HTC device known as the ChaCha, aka the Facebook phone whose close cousin is the no-keys HTC Salsa, another device we expect to be coming to the states soon? We’ve heard of it too, and in fact my associate Chris Davies over there in the Euro side of the world has had a real good look at it in a full review. Well guess what? HTC’s now got this device coming out on AT&T for real, USA style, in a style that’s dedicated to Facebook in more ways than one. Check out that physical Facebook button and head in for the changes.

What you’re going to get here is one touch to share, that being the Facebook button’s ability to instantly share essentially whatever you’ve got on your screen at the time to your Facebook wall. There’s also the ability to “instantly” share photos as you’re taking them, a long-press of the button checks you in with Facebook Places (GPS-style,) and of course you’ve got the latest version of HTC’s own custom user interface for Android, HTC Sense, to keep you company as well. With HTC Sense your lockscreen becomes a launch pad for whatever apps you like – just drag them to the ring and poof! You’re there.

Because HTC is attentive to such things as phone calls on a phone – believe it or not – they’ve also integrated such things as your friend’s profile pic (from Facebook or whatever you’ve assigned to them with the device itself) showing up when you get a phone call from them. If it’s their birthday, you’ll get a notification about that as well. No more excuses! You’ve got a VGA camera up front, a 5-megapixel camera on the back, and a full special effects suite built in to the phone for editing before uploading to Facebook again. Fun!

Also demoed today at the press conference was the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer. Bringing an ultra-versitile option to tablet fans the Transformer will provide both a tablet and notebook experience for the user.

The device will feature a full size QWERTY keyboard with its Mobile Docking Station. The tablet itself is a 10.1-inch device with a 1280×800 capacitive touch screen and will run Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) with ASUS’s new MyWave overlay and will feature the company’s WaveShare network media sharing system. MyWave looks very slick, and running on Honeycomb, it seemed incredibly responsive.

The device will sport two onboard cameras: one 1.2MP Video Camera on the front, and a 5MP auto-focus camera on the back. Communications and ports include Wireless N, Bluetooth, HDMI, USB and a built in card reader. With its NVIDIA Tegra 2, it is being promoted as “twice the performance while being even thinner than the iPad.”

You can pick up a ASUS Transformer for $399-$699 when it ships in April of this year.

Microsoft’s oft-rumored Project Pink consumer cellphone platform has seemingly had another shot of credibility in the arm today, with Gizmodo claiming to have been sent a stack of promotional materials tipping a near launch. As well as reusing the same graphic of the so-called Turtle phone as we saw leaked last year, they also confirm Verizon as the carrier and position the handset as a social media-centric messaging device.

[Update: New tipsters have apparently confirmed that both the Turtle and the Pure (aka the Sharp PB10ZU and the PB20ZU) will be available, and are likely to launch in late April 2010. The production names are still not finalized, but the UI shares some of Windows Phone 7's appearance along with "some sort of UI skin/more of a social-networking edge".]

Gizmodo are only sharing one tiny graphic – the one you see above – because their hoard apparently came from someone working with Microsoft and they want to protect their identity. Still, they’re asking us to believe that the rest is legitimate even if we can’t see it; the documents are supposedly only days old, and discuss the launch as if it’s imminent.

The smartphone runs an OS other than Windows Phone 7 but also seems to include some sort of app platform; it’s unclear what the basis of that platform might be. There are also no specifications of the Turtle device, nor any indication of what its commercial name might be. Still, if the timescales they’re talking about pan out, we shouldn’t have too long to wait.

Back at the beginning of the month, we had a whole slew of Android information come swirling into our offices. We did our best to cover it, and part of that coverage was this little piece of Mobile Internet Device (MID) Heaven. It’s a pretty slick, piano-black piece of tech that’s running some might Android goodness. And, despite the coverage we splattered all over it before, we were lacking any real live shots of the device. Well, now’s as good a time for change as any other, right?

The ENT ET-M43A is what it’s officially called, and unfortunately we don’t have a catchy nickname for it yet, but we’ll get right on that. Specs wise, this thing is packing a 624MHz Intel XScale PXA300 processor, paired with WiFi a/b/g, an SDHC card slot for expanding that memory you probably desperately need, and USB 2.0 connectivity. There’s a physical QWERTY keyboard, but as the images show us, there’s obviously a soft sort as well, just in case you want to take it easy on that sliding action.

There isn’t any 3G connectivity though, so if that’s something you need in your day-to-day, this MID isn’t going to get lucky enough to get your hands on it. Though, there was something strange about this device, and even now it’s somewhat disheartening. Right there, in the image right above this, you can see at the bottom left of the keyboard that infamous “flag” key, that shows up on nearly every Windows Mobile device out there. So, was this thing originally optimized for the WinMo platform, or does that thing have some kind of significance within this MID’s Android OS? No word on that as of yet. But, we’re sure we’ll find out soon enough.

The Toshiba TG01 came out awhile back, and while it may not have been the greatest phone to release this year, it did have some promising aspects: like that huge screen and thin framework. But that didn’t stop Toshiba from dropping word on the phone’s successors, the TG02 and TG03, which were pictured back in April. But now it looks like the Toshiba TG02 has made another appearance. Or has it?

See, there’s some confusion regarding the WiFi Alliance’s website, and the fact that the TG02 they have listed, isn’t necessarily the TG02 we were expecting. It looks like the TG02 is a clamshell phone, though the pictures we saw of it back in April don’t reflect that at all. And what makes it even more confusing, is the fact that the WiFi Alliance’s recent certification shows that the TG02 has a model number of TM5-E01. It’s strange, considering that phone has already cleared the FCC months ago, and while the statistics showed a clamshell phone, the pictures clearly showed a TG01-inspired handset.

There’s obviously nothing official regarding the TG02, or whatever phone has cleared the WiFi Alliance, and the confusion is pretty bad. Diving further into the TM5-E01 ordeal, other sites like Tweakers.net, has it that the TG02 is based on the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, featuring only a 3″ touchscreen internal display and a 0.8″ inch external screen. A full QWERTY keyboard comes for the ride, too. So, what should we expect? Or will it be like the TG01 and never see these shores?

As with every anticipated device coming out, there’s always something to wait for, and with the TouchPro 2, the price has been something of question as it readies to make its presence known here stateside.

We’ve already seen the review, and our excitement only piqued when we started to see images of the TouchPro 2 showing off a 3.5mm headphone jack, but now it seems we may have something to frown about. T-Mobile is looking to have the TouchPro 2 very soon, and they’re banking on the fact it’s business sense, Windows Mobile platform, and tilting capabilities will attract you to spend quite a bit of money. Based on the image we’re seeing of a T-Mobile price sheet, the TouchPro2 will sell for a hefty $549.99 off-contract, and $349.99 on a new two-year contract. There isn’t any word on a mail-in rebate at this point, but let’s hope T-Mobile lets one slip through.

And if you don’t want to go for a two-year contract, then go ahead and pick the phone up for $399.99 on a one-year contract.

Today has been exciting for mobile phone enthusiasts. First, information on the HTC Lancaster was released. Details about the Lancaster include a 2.8″ touchscreen, full size slide out QWERTY, and will feature a unique HTC Social Networking integration client. Launch date on ATT is slated for August 3rd.

The next bit of information is the entire business sales guide for the Palm Pre. The guide covers everything from an overview of the Pre as it pertains to business customers to the guiding questions the sales staff must ask to determine if the Pre is right for a business user. We also learned that the battery will give the Pre a 5-hour talk time for users. That’s some good information to know.

June 6th can’t come soon enough for at least one of the Staff members here at SlashGear (me). I’ll be camped out for the Pre bringing you exciting play-by-play news of the Pre’s release, knowing full well that the limited supply of Pre phones could result in a frenzied struggle to snag the device. We’ll also be out at the Pre launch party in Hollywood to bring you some great coverage from that event as well, so make sure you check back here on June 3rd and 6th!

Hackintosh netbooks are nothing new, these days, and so the more extreme OS X tweakers move on to more esoteric hardware. We’ve already seen Sony’s VAIO UX-series UMPC running Apple’s OS, but Micro PC Talk user perrin21 has a particularly slick setup: a subtly modified Sony VAIO UX 390 running OS X 10.5.7 as though it just stepped off a Cupertino production line.

Video demo after the cut

Physical changes to the UX390 are scant. Out went the standard hard-drive, to be replaced by a 32GB SSD, while the stock network card – which maxes out at g-band wireless – was replaced by an 802.11n card for faster connections to perrin21′s Airport Extreme.

The end result is a (large) pocket-sized portable Mac UMPC, which can smoothly run not only OS X but Boxee and Front Row. Until Apple roll out their Media Pad, this could be the next-best thing.
