Black Rock Shooter: The Game, spawned by the Japanese media franchise Black Rock Shooter and released by Imageepoch, will be making its way to the United States April 23rd via the PlayStation Network. It will make its way to Europe a day after. The game was initially released on the PlayStation Portable in Japan in August 2011, however, it’s just finally made its way on over to us. The game will be available for $19.99.

The United States and Europe version of the game will be released by NIS America. In the game, you play as the Black Rock Shooter, a battle android awakened in the year 2051 AD to end the 19-year battle between the alien race that invaded Earth and the 12 surviving human beings left on Earth. She, and her lack of clothing and armor, is the only hope in saving the planet.

This is an action-RPG, so the game focuses on character development. As you advance more into the story, you will be able to unlock more skills and more enhancements for your character. You will have access to a variety of weapons and vehicles to take out the alien race. In the game, you don’t just hack and slash. You have to evade enemy attacks, keep track of your heat gauge, and accurately fire you weapon.

You will have to complete missions in order to learn new skills and abilities, and unlock extra features in the game. You are able to use 4 unique skills at a time in battle. In order to survive certain types of enemies, you have to modify your skill bars accordingly. Don’t let the petite, anime characters fool you, this game is jam-packed with action. In similar news, Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories should be heading to the PlayStation Network right about now.

Sony has announced the launch of the PlayStation Mobile Developer Program, allowing developers to create content for PlayStation Mobile. This comes after the PlayStation Mobile launch back in October, a platform where users can play games on PlayStation Certified devices, including the Vita and certain Android smartphones. With the launch of the Developer Program, users can expect to see the catalog of available content rise in the coming months.

Via the Dev Portal, developers can access the resources needed to start creating content for PlayStation Mobile. Users can download the PlayStation Mobile SDK for free, and can create and test content before buying a license. In order to put content up on PlayStation Mobile, there’s a $99 fee, which allows for an unlimited number of app publications annually.

Some of the Android devices that are PlayStation Certified include the Xperia Play, Xperia Arc, Xperia S, Xperia Ion, Xperia Acro (and Acro HD), Sony Tablet S/P, as well as the HTC One X, One X+, One S, and One V. The PlayStation Mobile platform can be used on up to three devices. While a decent enough number, this limitation seems to put a damper on the idea of playing games across multiple devices, which is the basis for the network.

Developers can set up an account by registering over at the PSM DevPortal page. You’ll need to sign into the Sony Entertainment Network; if you don’t already have an ID, you’ll have to create an account, then sign-in with it. After that, it’s straightforward: agree to the terms and conditions, fill out the registration form, and verify your email.

Allow us to introduce you to the JXD S602. It’s a new Android gaming device that comes running Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, and it’s pretty inexpensive too. It also sports a look that’s quite similar to the PlayStation Portable, which is nothing new – we’ve seen plenty of devices that attempt to “recreate” the look and feel of Sony‘s last-generation handheld, so it isn’t surprising to see another one arrive on the scene

The device comes with a price tag of $66, which signals that there probably isn’t much going on under the hood. Indeed, you’ve got 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor running the show, working with a PowerVR SGX531 GPU and 512MB of RAM. There’s a 0.3-megapixel camera on board, and 4.3-inch two-point resistive touch screen that displays 480 x 272 resolution. If that resolution isn’t quite your liking, it also comes with an HDMI port so you can play your games on a bigger screen.

Given the set of actual buttons present on the face of this device, you can tell that it’s geared toward Android gaming. The JXD S602 supports button mapping for Android titles, so if you’re looking for a cheap way to play Android games with actual controls instead of touch screen controls, this may not be such a bad choice. Have a look at the video demo below for a better idea of how the JXD S602 plays.

It isn’t a bad looking device, but then again we have Sony to thank for that more than anyone else. At the very least, it should satisfy your gaming needs, but don’t expect to get too much more out of it. The fact that it’s running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will definitely be appreciated, and when coupled with the low price tag, that might just net JXD some significant sales.

NPD has released its report of video game sales data for June 2012, and like the months before, it isn’t all that pretty. Overall sales of both hardware and software were down 30% year-over-year, dropping from $989 million in June 2011 to $699 million last month. Hardware was the biggest loser, falling a whopping 45% to just $201 million in June.

Though software didn’t fare as bad as hardware did, it still did pretty terrible. In June 2011 software sales rang in at $461 million, but last month that figure took a 29% dive to $328 million. Accessories, on the other hand, actually grew year-over-year last month, climbing 4% to $169.8 million.

But wait! Before you start saying that we’re headed directly for another video game crash, keep in mind that NPD only tracks data for physical hardware, software, and accessories sales, meaning that everything else isn’t included in these figures. In fact, NPD analyst Anita Frazier says that when the company’s estimates for things like digital software purchases, DLC purchases (which includes money spent on microstransactions and subscriptions), rentals, used sales, and social game spending are all tallied up, consumers spent an estimated $1.36 billion on video games in June.

Looking at the top 10 software list for June, we see that Lego Batman 2 took the top spot, followed by Ghost Recon: Future Soldier in second place. Diablo III landed a third place ranking, while Max Payne 3 and NBA 2K12 rounded out the top five. Take a look at the full top ten list, but remember that this list only covers physical media sales:

1. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes – 360, Wii, PS3, PC, DS, 3DS, Vita
2. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier – PC, PS3, 360
3. Diablo III – PC
4. Max Payne 3 – PC, 360, PS3
5. NBA 2K12 – PC, 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP
6. Batman: Arkham City – PC, 360, PS3
7. Pokemon Conquest – DS
8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – 360, Wii, PS3, PC
9. Battlefield 3 – PC, 360, PS3
10. The Amazing Spider-Man – 360, PS3, Wii, DS, 3DS

Finally, the Xbox 360 finished off the month with 257,000 units sold, while Nintendo says that the 3DS sold 155,000 units, the DS 150,000, and the Wii rounded out the bottom with 95,000 sales. Sony has not yet commented on how many PS3s, PSPs, and Vitas were sold last month.

One of the things that die-hard PlayStation fans have been disappointed about when it comes to the PlayStation Vita is the lack of downloadable PSP games that have not been made available for the Vita. One of the selling points of the new system was that people who downloaded PSP games for their previous game platform would be able to re-download them on the Vita.

However, so far, only a small amount of those games have actually been made available. But today, there’s good news. “Starting today, you’ll have even more reason to never stop playing. We’re very excited to announce [more] PSP titles and minis will be available on the PS Vita Store, with many more coming soon,” Sony said in a post on the official PlayStation Blog. Among today’s new PSP titles are Cho Aniki Zero, Strikers 1945, Valhalla Knights 2, and Tom Clancy’s Rainboy Six: Vegas.

The minis are Aero Racer, Age of Zombies, Blast Off, Dynogems, Echoes, and Vempire. That’s quite a slate of titles for one day. In addition, Sony promised no fewer than 29 more PSP games will be “coming soon” to the Vita, and nearly 40 other PlayStation mini games were also unveiled. So even though the Vita isn’t really a backward compatible system, Sony is showing that it does at least appreciate those who want to play previous-generation titles on it.

Atlus, the publisher best known for its quirky and perhaps even too-far-off-the-wall role-playing games, has announced that it is decreasing the prices of all its downloadable PSP games that are currently available on the PlayStation Store. The discounts range from $5 to $20 off what the previous prices were, with many titles getting 50% discounts or more. The company is calling it the “ReVITAlized” sales event, encouraging sales of the PSP classics on Sony’s new Vita handheld system.

Only a handful of downloadable PSP games have made their way to the new system, but Atlus is one of the rare publishers with a full stock of titles available. The price drops are also effective for PSP owners who connect to the PlayStation Store from that system. Amid the biggest sales are the three Persona titles, which used to each be $40 and are now between $20 and $30. Other titles include Riviera: The Promised land, discounted from $15 to $10, Yggdra Union from $15 to $10, and Knights in the Nightmare going from $30 to $15.

In total, 10 games are included in the promotion. Whether you’re a PSP system owner who has watched Atlus RPGs from afar, your eyes glued to your pervy game-watching binoculars but your wallet unable to open itself for the cause… Or perhaps you like to spend your evenings making sexy time with the two nubs on your new PS Vita… Now you can dive into a library of critically acclaimed Atlus PSP games,” the company said in a PlayStation Blog post.

Sony has decided to pull a couple of downloadable PSP games from the PlayStation Vita version of the PlayStation Store because hackers have managed to exploit code contained within. The affected games has vulnerablilities that allowed the hackers to run homebrew applications on the Vita, something Sony has been extremely vocal about banning. So as expected, company bigwigs were not happy about this.

The issue first arose with the digital download version of the PSP game Motorstorm: Arctic Edge contained code that could be exploited by a third party when executed on the Vita. The third party that discovered this was the website Wololo.net. Sony hoped to avoid a big media firestorm over this and quietly yanked the game from the digital download Playstation Store platform.

Unfortunately for Sony, the story doesn’t end there. Wololo hackers have come back with another title, Everybody’s Tennis, that has the same issue. As expected, Sony has since yanked Everybody’s Tennis from the online store. It does not appear, however, that the US version of the game, known as Hot Shots Tennis, was affected. Sony has not officially responded to any of this, even about legitimate concerns for gamers who purchased either of these games legitimately.

[via Ripten]

Just when I thought, the Sony PSP was dead and gone, the electronics giant pulls out a new PSP value pack. This new value pack is interesting because it’s a new two-tone version in sky blue and marine blue. The backside is a darker blue; the buttons are darker blue while the face is a light blue. This isn’t the first two-tone PSP Sony has offered in Japan, there have been black and red, white and blue, and red and black versions in the past.

The special colored version will be offered in limited quantities starting this Thursday and will sell for ¥17,800. Sony says that this version uses colors to remind users of blue sky and sea. The bundle includes a memory stick Pro duo 2 GB card, body colored pouch, and the battery. The special mobile doesn’t include any games.

This particular PSP bundle pack carries part number PSPJ-30027. There is no indication that this bundle will be offered outside of Japan. I wonder when we will see the last of the PSPs now that the Vita is on the market. I guess that might happen when the Vita starts selling in bigger numbers.

Attention, PlayStation gamers – the online PlayStation Network service will be going under the knife on Thursday, March 1 for nearly the entire day. This is to address bugs, optimize performance, and perform necessary maintenance. The service is expected to be down starting at around 11:00 AM Eastern Time and will not be back online until after midnight.

This means that PS3 users will not be able to download videos or games, play online against other players, access services like Netflix or Hulu Plus, sign into Music Unlimited, or do anything that requires an Internet connection. The same goes for anyone trying to access online features on the PSP or PlayStation Vita. In addition, websites that use PSN authentication, like the PlayStation Blog, will not have PSN services.

This marks the first scheduled PSN downtime since the launch of the Vita in the US. Of course, for those who lived through the great PSN outage of 2011, this won’t be too big of a deal. Nevertheless, Sony says it apologizes “for any inconvenience this may cause.” Sony will announce on its PlayStation Twitter feed as soon as the service is back online. The company expects that to happen at around 1:00 AM Eastern Time on Friday.

When Sony’s new PlayStation Vita handheld launched in Japan late last year, you could say it suffered from some pretty major problems. Now that it’s launched in other territories, it seems there’s a mini problem, both figuratively and literally. Apparently there’s an issue with players trying to launch their Playstation mini games that were received through a Playstation Plus subscription.

To be clear, this is not an issue with Playstation mini titles not being compatible with the Vita. Gamers who purchased a mini for their PSP should be able to download it to their Vita and play it with no problem. But for some reason, if that mini was received for free through the Playstation Plus program, the game can still be downloaded but if users try to open it, they’re greeted with an error.

Playstation minis are small, casual games that first launched back in 2009. They were among the first downloadable games that could be purchased once and then played on either the PS3 or PSP. Now the Vita is added to that list, with this small exception. The issue came to light on Sony’s official forums, and a Sony spokesperson was quoted as saying, “We are aware of the issue, and will resolve it as quickly as possible.”

Sony’s web-connected PlayStation Network has been taken down for maintenance today, a scheduled event ending at midnight PST. This event was planned well in advance and, unlike the break-downs and hacks of 2011, is nothing to worry about as far as gamers personal data and security on the whole goes. This maintenance began early this morning at 6 AM PST and will be fully complete by tomorrow.

For those of you reading this in the future, this particular down-time took place on the 2nd of February, 2012. This maintenance period has for the most part left online play unaffected, while those who had signed into their accounts before 6 AM PST today should have been able to stay logged in throughout the down time. The services you know and love that are down and will remain down through the night will be the PlayStation Store via the PlayStation 3 and PSP, and Media Go.

In addition, PlayStation HomeMusic Unlimited and Video Unlimited services are unavailable until tomorrow. Account Management and Account Registration are also being said to be down while all the good stuff stays active as it should be. The good stuff includes gamers abilities to collect in-game trophies – each of these trophies then set to upload to users accounts when maintenance ends. Meanwhile you could also just play some offline games or break out the old Ball in a cup attached with a string and have a little old-timey fun then too. It’s only one day!

A reminder to all: the place where Sony announces down-times in advance is over at the PlayStation blog – or you could just stick around SlashGear where you love to get your PlayStation news and we’ll let you know both in advance and day-of like we always do. Cheers!

It may not be the most amazing game that’s been released in the 21st century. Heck, it doesn’t even really have any characters or storyline. Yet Lumines has been heralded as one of the most enjoyable games on the PSP, and it’s set to be one of the biggest entries on the impending PlayStation Vita. The company behind the addicting puzzle title, Q Entertainment, has brought forth some new details about this next installment.

Lumines Electronic Symphony will take full advantage of the Vita’s unique touch panel on the back of the device, making it easier for players to move and position blocks onto the play field. Other new additions include special skills that are unlocked as players collect new avatars, and a graphical overhaul that will turn the flat 2D blocks into much more visually pleasing 3D cubes. The core gameplay, however, remains unchanged.

The brain-busting finger-twisting bundle of joy is scheduled to be available as a launch title for the Vita, which is due out late next month. It will be one of the rare franchises to be available at launch for both the PSP and the Vita. Make sure you have enough hair to pull out and enough time to kill before you pick up your copy.

Sony has admitted it made a mistake with how PSP games were handled, dropping the ball when the PS3 arrived, and insists that it will not make the same mistake the the PS Vita. “”In the past we launched PSP and then shifted our attention to PS3 when that came on the horizon, which we now concede was a mistake” Sony worldwide studios president Shuhei Yoshida told the official PlayStation blog, “so with PS Vita we are working on this huge range titles and planning ahead for a constant supply of excellent games.”

“Generally we look three years ahead when we work on games” Yoshida says, with Sony having a “fairly firm plan” to take it up until 2013. The PS Vita went on sale in Japan over the weekend, selling 321,000 units in its first two days.

Meanwhile, Yoshida was at pains to point out that Sony will not be pushing augmented reality onto PS Vita gamers unnecessarily, despite AR being a key part of what the handheld was designed to support. The company has demonstrated its SmartAR technology several times this year, eschewing glyphs and instead using face-tracking and other systems.

“One thing I know about hardcore gamers is that they hate it when we try to shove new technology down their throats. There may be a perception that Augmented Reality is a gimmick, so we have to provide something that is robust and genuinely enhances the experience … The more we experiment, I’m sure that we will see real gameplay benefits for hardcore players” Shuhei Yoshida, Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment and President of Worldwide Studios

The launch of the PS Vita is getting close for Japan even though it won’t hit the US until next year. Gamers that plan to purchase the Vita that have a big library of UMD games from their previous PSP will be able to sign up for the UMD Passport program. Before you get too excited, this isn’t a way to port UMD games over to the PS Vita.

The UMD Passport requires the user to use the Registration UMD app that will be offered for free. This app allows the user to insert the UMS and link to a PSN Account to register the UMD account. After you register, the title there will be an offer made to buy a digital version of the game from the digital store at a reduced price.

This would be better if since you own the games already Sony just allowed you to get digital versions to keep playing on the new console. There is no word on what the reduced rate will be. What do you think, should it be free to port games you already own to the PS Vita from UMD?

According to new data from mobile analytics firm Flurry, Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android devices have now taken command of the US portable gaming market. Together, they control 58 percent of the industry’s revenue in 2011. That’s a huge jump from just two years ago when the Nintendo DS held 70 percent of portable gaming revenue.

Gaming on mobile devices has been on the rise, but this is the first time that gaming revenue from iPhones and Android smartphones have overtaken dedicated portable gaming devices such as the Nintendo DS and the Sony PlayStation Portable.

“We see, for the first time, that smartphone revenue in the U.S. has leap-frogged portable game revenue,” said Flurry’s vice president of marketing Peter Fargo. “The disruption has been downright brutal.”

With ever faster mobile processors as we’ve seen with the recently launched iPhone 4S and the upcoming Tegra 3 chips for Android tablets, smartphones will increasingly be able to play console-quality games, making the future even more bleak for dedicated portable game machines.

Nintendo reported its first loss in profit this year since 1982, caused by a decline in game and console sales, losing $925 million in the six-month period that ended in September. Its Nintendo 3DS was considered a flop and now it’s attempting to turn things around with a whole new game console concept with the Wii U.

Sony’s PlayStation Portable has likewise been slipping, waiting for its next iteration in the form of the PS Vita. However, reception to the PS Vita has thus far been lukewarm and the device won’t arrive in most parts of the world until early next year.

The lack of Flash support at launch isn’t too surprising since Sony’s PSP also did not support flash initially. But that device did not get an update to support Flash until over a year after it launched. With the current anti-Flash movement, the Vita’s Flash support may come just as slowly in the form of a firmware update, if at all.

The PS Vita was first unveiled at E3 2011 and features a 5-inch touchscreen display along with an additional touchpad control on the backside. The device sports dual cameras, dual analog sticks, GPS, Bluetooth, and WiFi. It’s set to go on sale in Japan on December 17, launching with 26 game titles, and will be released in North America and Europe on February 22.

Sony unveiled a new budget-friendly model of the PSP today during their Gamescom press conference. The announcement came as quite a surprise since the company’s PSP successor, the PS Vita, was announced with much fanfare at E3 2011. This new PSP model will, however, only be available to the European market.

This value-priced PSP model dubbed the E-1000 will lack Wi-Fi support, meaning it will not be able to download games. Instead, it will be accompanied by a variety of PSP Essentials titles that will retail for £9.99, including Invizimals: The Lost Tribe, EyePet Adventures, and FIFA 12.

The PSP E-1000 will retail for £99, which is £30 less than the current PSP model. And although there’s no Wi-Fi, users can still access a full catalogue of PSP games on UMD or from the PlayStation Store via Media Go.

Sony’s PlayStation Portable will soon be available in a special bundle called the PSP Entertainment Pack. So, if you’ve been wanting to get a portable gaming console and you’re not patient enough for the next-gen PS Vita, then at least wait until August 30, when this PSP deal hits store shelves. The bundle will include the PSP itself plus two games and a 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo for a total of $159.99.

The two games included are EA’s much anticipated football game, Madden NFL 12, and the older racing title, Need for Speed: Shift. Madden NFL 12 is a cross platform game that’s set to also launch on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PS2 come August 30. It let’s you select from 32 teams and stadiums along with your favorite players all delivered in a slick live broadcast format. Need for Speed: Shift, on the other hand, is almost two years old, but still a decent racing game nonetheless.

Although the future game titles for the PSP look bleak with the PS Vita being the imminent successor, this package could still be good if you want to play Madden NFL 12 on the go right away. The PS Vita, which had been rumored for months under the codename NGP, was officially unveiled during E3 2011 and is set to arrive sometime in 2012. But no exact dates have been given yet, which means it could be too many months to wait for some of you to be without a portable gaming console.

Sony is offering up some PSP-3000 value packs in Japan as a bit of a last hurrah for the system ahead of the launch of the PS Vita. Considering the PSP-3000 hasn’t sold in droves I don’t see a couple new colors being that big of a draw. The packs will land on July 28 in Japan and sell for 17,800 yen with tax included. The piano black looks like the same color Sony has always offered. The other two colors are cool looking though.

The colors include vibrant blue and blossom pink. I really like the vibrant blue color. The bundle comes with a 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo storage card. The bundles also come with a storage pouch, a cleaning cloth, and the AC adapter and 1200mAh battery. These are the same basic bundles we have seen before hardware wise.

Sony also takes time to mention new games coming exclusively to the PSP in July. Konami Digital Entertainment will launch Powerful Pro Baseball 2011 on July 14. BASARA Sengoku Heroes Chronicles will launch on July 21 from Capcom. Let’s make a J. League Pro Soccer Club 7 Euro Plus will launch on August 4.

It’s taken Sony over a month, but the PlayStation Network is finally back online. After a last-minute tweak yesterday, the PlayStation Store is open for business and rammed to the rafters with new content for PS3, PSP and PlayStation Plus members, which you can see after the cut.

The Welcome Back content is not yet live, with Sony saying that it’s in “the final stages of testing” and should be ready for download soon. As the company previously detailed, that will include – for North America at least - free games, movies, and access to PlayStation Plus, with a choice of titles for PS3 and PSP users.

Another Store update is promised this Friday, and then masses of E3 2011 content timed to go live with the gaming show next week.

Unfortunately, those in Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong will have to wait a bit longer, just as Sony warned, with the “back online by the end of the week” promise not applying to those three countries.

Today’s work will in-part focus on bringing the PlayStation Store up to speed. Although Sony has restored some services in North America, Europe and Asia, including online gaming and much of its Qriocity streaming media platform, there remain several elements yet to be turned back on.

That includes in-game commerce, support for redeeming vouchers and codes, Media Go, and the ability to use Qriocity on PS3, PSP, Sony’s VAIO computers and other PCs. The timetable calls for those to be added back in by the end of the week, though Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong will have to wait a little longer.

Sony will miss its May 31 self-imposed deadline for full restoration of the PlayStation Network, instead promising to have all services in the Americas, Europe/PAL territories and Asia – excluding Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea – active once more by the end of the week. The embarrassing, ongoing delay in Sony’s home country is apparently due to more stringent information security mandates from the Japanese government; Sony has declined to comment on delays in other parts of Asia.

In addition to PSN service restoration, Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity will also be restored in the same territories. Services freshly reactivated will include full PlayStation Store functionality, in-game commerce, support for redeeming vouchers and codes, Media Go, and the ability to use Qriocity on PS3, PSP, Sony’s VAIO computers and other PCs.

The news follows a partial restore of the PlayStation Network services earlier this month, beginning with North America and Europe and then spreading to Asia afterwards. However it’s not been all smooth sailing: issues with the password reset system forced Sony to take it offline briefly.

You love charts, we love charts, and Sony sure loves charts when they confirm PS3 sales were headed skyward in 2010. The company has released its full-year 2010 financial results (up to March 31 2011) and revealed that 14.3m PlayStation 3 consoles were sold in the twelve month period. Interestingly, though, 2010 holiday season sales (Q3 on Sony’s calendar) were down in comparison to 2009, from 6.5m to 6.3m, while the three month period at the start of this calendar 2011 also dipped year-on-year.

So, even though Sony sold 1.3m more PS3 consoles altogether in 2010 compared to 2009, it looks like sales could be slowing. The in-house analysts obviously agree, since the estimates for 2011 at 15m, an increase of just 0.7m in comparison. The figures also show how important the incoming Sony NGP is, since PSP sales dropped almost 2m to 8m in 2010, and Sony expects that to drop to 6m in 2011.

Elsewhere, PMP sales actually beat Sony’s estimates, though that’s a rare glimmer of success. LCD TVs, camcorders, Blu-ray players, DVD players and PCs all missed their forecasts. Operating income overall was up, but the unfavorable exchange rate – among other factors – meant Sony didn’t pocket as much cash as it might have hoped.

If you are a PlayStation 3 fan that likes to play online games and peruse the PlayStation Store online, you have been waiting for a while now for Sony to get back to business as usual. The PSN is finally back up but so far the Store has remained down. Part of the “sorry we let you info get stolen, don’t leave us for Xbox” swag that Sony is offering up are a couple free games for PS3 users and lots of folks have virtual money burning a hole in their pocket and are wanting to spend that loot as fast as possible.

Last week an intercepted memo surfaced reportedly from Sony to devs that said the PlayStation Store would be back up and running today. Yesterday a new update for the PSP landed that hints the PlayStation Store is indeed coming soon. The update appears to be the PSP equivalent to the PS3 update that forced owners to update their passwords for the PSN. The problem with that PS3 update was that the not-so-carefully-crafted update your password process used information that the hackers who stole user details have access to opening users up to a new hack.

The new PSP update brings the portable console to version 6.3.9. Sony notes that the update will guide users that need to change their password through the process. The update also improves system software stability during the use of some features. There are no specific details of what is fixed in the update offered.

The first game to get the PSP remaster treatment will be Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Ver., available in PSP form since December last year and now crossing over to PS3-friendly Blu-ray disc. No word on when the PSP remaster series will cross over to North America or Europe.

Sony has confirmed that it will begin a phased restoration of PlayStation Network and Qriocity streaming services this week, rolling out region by region, and bringing back newly-strengthened online gaming, music downloads, PlayStation Home access and more. Meanwhile Sony has also detailed its “complimentary offering and “welcome back” appreciation program” with which it hopes to sooth frustrated PSN users.

The full list of services coming back online includes online gaming on both PS3 and PSP systems, including those titles which demand online verification and downloaded games, PlayStation Home, Friends Lists and chat functionality. On the media side, there’s access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity services – though only for existing subscribers right now, not, it seems, new users – as well as to download un-expired PS3/PSP/MediaGo movie rentals. Both services will now allow users to access their account management pages and reset passwords.

As for security, Sony says it has added automated software monitoring and configuration management so as to prevent future attacks, as well as giving it an “enhanced ability” to spot software intrusions, unauthorized access and unusual activity. There are extra firewalls in place, along with boosted data protection and encryption. The data center itself will be physically moved to a new, more secure location.

PS3 owners should expect a “forced” software update before they can get back online, and they’ll be prompted to change their PSN account password too:

“PS3 will have a forced system software update that will require all registered PlayStation Network users to change their account passwords before being able to sign into the service. As an added layer of security, that password can only be changed on the same PS3 in which that account was activated, or through validated email confirmation, a critical step to help further protect customer data.” Sony

Finally, in the hope of soothing troubled gamers missing their multi-play, Sony will be offering the “Welcome Back” appreciation program: 30 days of free membership to PlayStation Plus for existing PSN users, and 30 days free service for those already using PlayStation Plus. Sony is also planning “selected PlayStation entertainment content” for free download, though is yet to confirm which titles will be offered. Qriocity subscribers will get 30 days free service.

Sony is also saying it will help subscribers enroll in “identity theft protection services and/or similar programs” though hasn’t detailed exactly how that process will work. “Welcome Back” will begin rolling out in the coming weeks, as Sony brings the services back online to a stable point.

Is Sony doing enough to win back your trust, or is 30 days of free PlayStation Plus access insufficient? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Press Release:

SOME PLAYSTATION®NETWORK AND QRIOCITY™ SERVICES TO BE AVAILABLE THIS WEEK

Phased Global Rollout of Services to Begin Regionally;
System Security Enhanced to Provide Greater Protection of Personal Information

Tokyo, May 1, 2011 – Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI, the company) announced they will shortly begin a phased restoration by region of PlayStation®Network and Qriocity™ services, beginning with gaming, music and video services to be turned on. The company also announced both a series of immediate steps to enhance security across the network and a new customer appreciation program to thank its customers for their patience and loyalty.

Following a criminal cyber-attack on the company’s data-center located in San Diego, California, U.S.A., SNEI quickly turned off the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services, engaged multiple expert information security firms over the course of several days and conducted an extensive audit of the system. Since then, the company has implemented a variety of new security measures to provide greater protection of personal information. SNEI and its third-party experts have conducted extensive tests to verify the security strength of the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. With these measures in place, SCE and SNEI plan to start a phased rollout by region of the services shortly. The initial phase of the rollout will include, but is not limited to, the following:
Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation®3 (PS3) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems

-This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games
Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
Access to account management and password reset
Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
PlayStation®Home
Friends List

Chat Functionality

Working closely with several outside security firms, the company has implemented significant security measures to further detect unauthorized activity and provide consumers with greater protection of their personal information. The company is also creating the position of Chief Information Security Officer, directly reporting to Shinji Hasejima, Chief Information Officer of Sony Corporation, to add a new position of expertise in and accountability for customer data protection and supplement existing information security personnel. The new security measures implemented include, but are not limited to, the following:

Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks
Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns

Implementation of additional firewalls

The company also expedited an already planned move of the system to a new data center in a different location that has been under construction and development for several months. In addition, PS3 will have a forced system software update that will require all registered PlayStation Network users to change their account passwords before being able to sign into the service. As an added layer of security, that password can only be changed on the same PS3 in which that account was activated, or through validated email confirmation, a critical step to help further protect customer data.

The company is conducting a thorough and on-going investigation and working with law enforcement to track down and prosecute those responsible for the illegal intrusion.
“This criminal act against our network had a significant impact not only on our consumers, but our entire industry. These illegal attacks obviously highlight the widespread problem with cyber-security. We take the security of our consumers’ information very seriously and are committed to helping our consumers protect their personal data. In addition, the organization has worked around the clock to bring these services back online, and are doing so only after we had verified increased levels of security across our networks,” said Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President, Sony Corporation. “Our global audience of PlayStation Network and Qriocity consumers was disrupted. We have learned lessons along the way about the valued relationship with our consumers, and to that end, we will be launching a customer appreciation program for registered consumers as a way of expressing our gratitude for their loyalty during this network downtime, as we work even harder to restore and regain their trust in us and our services.”

Complimentary Offering and “Welcome Back” Appreciation Program

While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, the company is committed to helping its customers protect their personal data and will provide a complimentary offering to assist users in enrolling in identity theft protection services and/or similar programs. The implementation will be at a local level and further details will be made available shortly in each region.

The company will also rollout the PlayStation Network and Qriocity “Welcome Back” program, to be offered worldwide, which will be tailored to specific markets to provide our consumers with a selection of service options and premium content as an expression of the company’s appreciation for their patience, support and continued loyalty.

Central components of the “Welcome Back” program will include:

Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.
All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.
Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.

Additional “Welcome Back” entertainment and service offerings will be rolled out over the coming weeks as the company returns the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services to the quality standard users have grown to enjoy and strive to exceed those exceptions.

SNEI will continue to reinforce and verify security for transactions before resuming the PlayStation®Store and other Qriocity operations, scheduled for this month.

When Sony launched the PSP Go in 2009, it was expected to be the next big thing by some fans. They said that it would capitalize on the growing downloadable-content trend, and gamers wouldn’t even miss the UMD drive. More importantly, they said, with such future-focused features, it could justify its $250 price tag.

But then gamers actually got their hands on the device. And they quickly realized that all the so-called benefits of owning the PSP Go were, well, non-existent.

When discussing the reasons the PSP Go failed, it’s hard to pinpoint a single issue. The device was rife with problems from the beginning that made it dead on arrival. And towards the end, it seemed that only Sony saw it as a worthwhile buy.

Take, for example, the exorbitant $250 price tag. At that rate, consumers expected much more than a device that would allow them to download games and play them while on-the-go. After all, for $50 more, they could get the most-capable gaming device on the market, Sony’s PlayStation 3. Even after Sony reduced the PSP Go’s price to $199, it was too expensive.

There was also the issue of games. Generally speaking, the library of titles available to the PSP Go were lackluster. And those that were actually dedicated to gaming on a PSP would have chosen Sony’s traditional model, which supported a UMD drive, so they could get all the games available on the platform.

But it goes beyond the device’s own shortcomings. It was available in a time when casual players were less likely to turn to portable devices, like the PSP or the DS, to satisfy their gaming needs. Instead, they took to Apple’s App Store, found downloadable games, like Angry Birds, and enjoyed them from their iPhone. Android gamers have been doing that as of late, as well.

Simply put, casual titles are becoming more popular. And for the first time, traditional portables are being forced to actually worry about smartphones. Some of the more popular options, like the DS, have been able to thrive under those circumstances. The weakest of the bunch, including the PSP Go, have failed.

So, what can Sony learn from all this?

For one, the company needs to give itself a better chance of competing against Nintendo and smartphones by fairly pricing its upcoming NGP. It would also be a good idea if Sony acknowledges the threat that the competition poses and market the NGP around that.

But perhaps more than anything, Sony needs to learn to not take such giant leaps in the portable space without doing it the right way. The iPhone was a gamble, but Apple pulled it off by doing something special. The same can be said for the DS.

The PSP Go wasn’t special in any way. And that, more than anything else, is why it failed.

Farewell, sweet PSP Go, there’s obviously only room for one gaming slider with PlayStation pretensions. Sony has apparently confirmed that production of the PSP Go has been stopped, telling AV Watch that its current stock will be the final units available.

Sony will continue to support the PSP Go, and firmware updates are apparently still in the works, but for now the PSP-3000 will be the only portable gaming hardware the company sells. That’s aside from the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play, of course.

According to Sony, clearing out the PSP Go will allow them to focus on the NGP, the Next Generation Portable expected to hit the market later in 2011. More on the Sony NGP in our recent SlashGear 101 feature.

Smartphone gaming continues to ratchet up the pressure on traditional mobile platforms like the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, with market analysts Flurry releasing stats that show iOS and Android gaming almost doubled their market share against the old-school consoles. The Nintendo DS dived from 70-percent in 2009 to 57-percent in 2010, while the PSP share slipped from 11-percent to 9-percent, judged by revenue.

Interestingly, it’s only the portable segment which is really feeling the squeeze. Smartphone gaming revenue increased from 5- to 8-percent of the US market, while console gaming revenue grew from 71- to 76-percent. In contrast, traditional portable gaming revenue dipped from 24-percent to 16-percent.

Overall, though, it’s billed as bad news for the mobile gaming segment as a whole. While smartphone game sales are increasing, the per-app price is generally less than what’s charged per DS or PSP title; that’s seen the value of the market drop from $2.7bn in 2009 to $2.4bn in 2010. Sony’s push with the PlayStation Suite of development tools for the NGP – which will allow developers to create games for both the new console and Sony Ericsson’s Android handsets – may only speed that drop, as mini-titles on dedicated handhelds become more commonplace.

Well you’re in luck, even if you didn’t get a ticket, because they’re totally streaming the whole thing. Then let’s get into some FCC business, a column or two, and some very exciting launch news from a couple of fabulous Android-toting businesses.

Take a peek at the Dell Panerai convertible tablet as it attempts to slide its way through the FCC. Check out another FCC attempt by no less than Apple as it dreams up some smart-display iPhone bezel – all sorts of touching! Then see a product that needed no approval, clearly: NuScreen screen goo!

See an analyst decide that Apple holds 60% of touch panel supplies. See Best Buy get in a whopping amount of trouble as they hold back iPad 2 supplies from customers. See the PSP sell more units than the 3DS in Japan.

Behold as the Acer Iconia Tab A500 Honeycomb tablet is officially announced. Take a peek as some HTC Incredible 2 press shots appear. Get pumped up about a sweet London Pyramid Party… and you’re invited! Lick your lips at AMD fusion chips for Android!

Finally, get a big fat boost of knowledge as dropped by our man in England Chris Davies as he asks: Is Dual-Touch the Future of Phones and Tablets?

I am very surprised to hear this bit of news. We have mentioned already that the 3DS set a one-day sales record for sales with the launch of the 3DS. Naturally, I assumed that the 3DS was selling in droves still and I bet a lot of other geeks did too. Apparently, the 3DS isn’t selling as well as I thought.

GamePro reports that the PSP has outsold the 3DS in Japan for the week. The PSP didn’t just squeak by the 3DS either, it sold thousands more units. The numbers for Japanese sales were 58,075 for PSP sales and 42,979 units sold for the 3DS. That number for the 3DS represents a decline of about 8,000 units compared to the week before while the PSP grew by about 7,000.

GamePro attributes the increased PSP console sales to a specific game title called Amagami that is some sort of dating simulation. The game sold over 69,000 copies and more than a few folks bought a new PSP to go with it. The only 3DS title in the top ten list for game sales over the week was Pro Yakyo Famista 2011, which is a baseball game.

I was never that impressed by the original PSP, the games on the system weren’t that great and the portable device itself was just not as fun as the Nintendo DS to me. When Sony unveiled the NGP last month the new portable looks great and I am excited about it. The unveiling of the NGP early in the year for a launch near the holiday season of 2011 left a lot of us wondering why the console was announced so early.

Sony’s Kaz Hirai has sat down for an interview with the Official PlayStation Blog about the NGP to answer a few questions. The reason the console was announced so far ahead of the launch according to Hirai was so that Sony could talk openly about the portable with game developers all around the world. Sony wants a large and robust list of launch titles for the portable and should have it.

We all know that the details would have been leaked in short order as Sony lined up developers so this was a preemptive move it seems. Hirai also noted that having a stable platform that would stay for years to come was important in the developing stage of the new portable. He also said that Sony hopes to match the install base of the PSP and then move beyond that with the NGP. Check out the video to hear what he had to say.

Having faced criticism in the past for their 2006 PlayStation 3 models for $499 and $599 and their 2009 PSP for $249, Sony is trying to play it safe with the NGP although no specific pricing details have been revealed yet.

“That’s something we spent a lot of time on this time around with NGP, to make sure that we don’t go off the deep end,” says Hirai.

However, keeping it affordable may also have been a factor in Sony’s decision to not incorporate 3D in the upcoming NGP scheduled for release before the end of this year. With Nintendo to release a new DS handheld in March that does incorporate 3D, it will be interesting to see how the competing devices will be received.

As expected, Sony has outed its “PSP2“, currently codenamed the Sony next generation portable entertainment system or NGP, and expected to go on sale at the end of 2011. Based on a quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor and Imagination Technologies PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU, the NGP has a 5-inch OLED 960 x 544 multitouch-capable touchscreen on the front and a multitouch pad on the back, for what Sony describes as “touch, grab, trace, push and pull” gestures in gameplay.

There are also two cameras, one front and one rear, and a suite of sensors including six-axis motion-sensing (pairing gyroscope and accelerometer), a three-axis digital compass, GPS and WiFi. There’s also 3G, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR with support for A2DP stereo headphones. Sony is now using a flash memory card to store games, but there’ll also be access to the new PlayStation Suite, also announced today, which offers titles for the NGP and for Android smartphones.

As with the 3DS‘ StreetPass feature, the Sony NGP will use a new service called Near, part of the PlayStation Network, to flag up gamers in the vicinity and show what they’re playing now or having been playing recently. There’ll also be wireless multiplayer support. Each NGP game will LiveArea access, with a log of activity and other information.

The whole thing measures in at 182.0 x 18.6 x 83.5 mm and has dual analog sticks, the usual directional buttons, action buttons and shoulder controls. No word on pricing; that won’t be revealed until closer to launch at the end of the year.

Press Release:

SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES
ITS NEXT GENERATION PORTABLE ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM

Ultimate Portable Entertainment System Makes Its Debut This Year,
Further Expanding the PlayStation® Business in the Portable Gaming Market
Tokyo, January 27, 2011– Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced its next generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP), which delivers the ultimate portable entertainment experience. NGP will make its debut at the end of the year 2011.

NGP is designed to offer unparalleled interactive entertainment that is only possible on PlayStation®. This new system offers a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context, made possible by leveraging SCE’s experience from both PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and PlayStation®3 (PS3®) entertainment systems.

Deep and immersive gaming is at the core of PlayStation’s DNA, and NGP is the latest embodiment of this vision. By having both Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity, together with various applications, NGP will enable infinite possibilities for users to “encounter,” “connect,” “discover,” “share” and “play” with friends wherever they are. Within the device are a range of features that provide a genuinely cutting-edge, next generation ultimate portable entertainment experience.

・Stunning OLED and Revolutionary User Interface
NGP incorporates a beautiful multi-touch 5-inch organic light emitting display (OLED) as the front display. A high-performance CPU / GPU combined with OLED enables rich, visually striking graphics never seen before on a portable entertainment system, for both games and other digital entertainment content. The new system also incorporates a unique multi-touch pad on the rear, and together with the front touch display, NGP offers new game play allowing users to interact directly with games in three dimension-like motion, through “touch, grab, trace, push and pull” moves of the fingers.

・Super Oval Design and Dual Analog Sticks
While succeeding the basic design philosophy of PSP, NGP adopts the Super Oval Design form factor, created to fit comfortably in users’ hands. For the first time, a portable entertainment system will feature two analog sticks, which enable a wider range of game genres to be brought into the portable experience.
・LiveArea™
Every game title for NGP will be provided with a space called “LiveArea™” where users can share the fun and excitement with other players. Users will have access to the latest information of games provided from SCE and 3rd party developers and publishers through PlayStation®Network. Additionally, NGP users will be able to view an “Activity” log that is constantly updated with accomplishments from users who are playing the same game, which in turn can trigger active real-time communication among users.

・Near
SCE will also provide location-based services on NGP as part of the basic features utilizing PlayStation Network. The new application called “Near,” developed specifically for this service and the network, will be pre-installed in the system to let users find out what their friends in the vicinity are playing now or what they were playing recently. Users can meet their friends and new players virtually, regardless of what games they are playing, simply by sharing their game information across different dimensions of time and distance.

・New Game Medium
NGP adopts a new game medium, a small flash memory based card, dedicated for NGP software titles. Taking advantage of the flash memory feature, this innovative card can store the full software titles plus add-on game content or the game save data directly on to the card. By adopting flash memory based card, SCE will be able to provide game cards with higher capacity in the future, allowing developers to store more game data to deliver rich and immersive games.

NGP will also come equipped with two cameras on its front and rear, as well as three motion sensors, gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass, all of which are designed to enable users to enjoy the world of entertainment that is linked with real life experiences.

PlayStation®Suite (PS Suite), announced today, will also closely coordinate with NGP. The newly developed and released game content for Android™ based portable devices can also be enjoyed on NGP. As a result, users will have access to not only the most leading-edge content, but also some of the more casual experiences that typify the mobile market place.

SCE will vigorously promote NGP towards the launch as the next generation portable entertainment platform and deploy various measures to further expand the portable gaming market.

Despite the rumors swirling around that the next version of the PlayStation Portable (PSP) will be announced on January 27th, Sony has announced on their official blog that they’re not forgetting about the current generation of PSP out there in the wild. Unfortunately, Sony’s being pretty tight-lipped about the update, providing a bare minimum of information on their site to announce the firmware update.

The newest firmware is v6.37, and details are non-existent. Sony has classified the update as “minimal” one, and only allude to the fact that the update will improve the overall system software stability during use of “some features.” No explanation as to what they’re talking about, or what features they mean, but it looks like the system should get at least a bit smoother in daily operation, if nothing else.

No timetable as to when the update will actually be launched, either. Just “soon.” Will Sony include any special surprises? We’ll just have to wait and see.
