Official PlayStation 4 unboxing handled delicately by Sony

Official PlayStation 4 unboxing handled delicately by Sony

This week the folks at Sony are once again proving that they'll not be letting the "firsts" of the PlayStation 4 presentation fall into the wrong hands with an original Official PS4 Unboxing video. They've made an especially short affair of it all, emphasizing the fact that the machine itself is exceedingly simple. This hardware isn't about cords, after all - it's all about the sharpness of wirelessness and the angles at which this release will be made.

PS4 DualShock 4 compatibility testing hands-on: Steam to Android

Just weeks before the release of the PlayStation 4 we're taking the time to dive in with the most important piece of equipment outside the console itself: the DualShock 4. This handheld wireless (or wired) device is made by Sony itself, returning to the market to re-claim the throne as the highest-quality controller on the planet. What we're doing this week is testing the device as it functions outside of the PlayStation 4 gaming console itself.

PlayStation 4 teardown placed squarely in Sony’s hands

In the weeks before the PlayStation 4 is released to the public, a rather non-traditional teardown of the machine has commenced. What you're seeing here is a collaboration between Sony's engineering director Yasuhiro Ootori and Wired, taking apart the PlayStation 4 piece by piece inside Sony headquarters. This tour is not the same sort of teardown as you'll see at the hands of iFixit - instead it's more of a cut-up readied for the gamers of the world.

Steam users eclipse Xbox Live, PSN still far and away tops

This afternoon the folks at Valve have let it be known that they're rolling in with a cool 65 million users total for the Steam gaming network. This number can be compared to the most recent report from Sony on the PlayStation Network working with 110 million users and Microsoft reporting that they're in at 48 million users in Xbox Live. These numbers are not the same as "active users", a number which is much more difficult to grasp.

PS4 zero-day update 1.5 detailed: Remote Play, Party, Blu-ray DVD

That title did't just fall out of thin air as a specifications boost for the PlayStation 4 - it's really a selection of items that won't work on the console right out of the box. What you're going to need to do when you purchase and own a PlayStation 4 this November is to update it with a software download called PS4 System Software Update 1.50 - without it, you'll have no Blu-ray Disk or DVD playing abilities, Online Multiplayer, Background music player, or a handful of other items.

Sony increases PS4 hard drive size to 12.5mm for 1.5 TB capacity

German tinkerer website Computer Bild has discovered that the PS4 will use a 12.5mm hard drive dock rather than the 9.5mm spec used in the PS3. This means the PS4 hard drive can be replaced with a 1.5TB SATA hard drive, with even more capacity in the future as developers improve storage densities. This and other discoveries were made when the website acquired a developer console for the next-generation gaming system.
