Sony PSP Remaster makes portable games PS3 playable

Sony has announced plans to launch the "PSP Remaster" series, titles originally intended for the PSP but reworked to play on the PS3. As well as boosting the graphics quality to better suit a big-screen gaming experience, Sony will enable cross-platform PSP and PS3 multi-player titles using a new "adhoc party for PlayStation Portable" application on the home console. Gaming got some extra attention this week with speculation about the next-gen Nintendo Wii, a unique offer on the Xbox 360, and restoration issues for the PlayStation network. Android’s WiFi security problem gets a fix, and the latest 3.1 Honeycomb update will be heading to the Asus Eee Pad Transformer and the Acer Iconia Tab A500 in June. Amazon is possibly ramping up a family of Android tablets, with the first two codenamed ‘Coyote’ and ‘Hollywood’ to hit the market before end of the year. Apple will be celebrating its 10th retail anniversary with a possible revamp dubbed Apple Store 2.0. When the PlayStation Network went down, I did not notice. I own a PlayStation 3, and I do play it regularly. But I never play games online. I can’t. It’s not my favorite style of gameplay, the fast-paced twitch-gaming. I’ll never practice enough to be competitive among the top gamers I seem to always encounter. But mostly, it sucks out too much of my soul and leaves me feeling intense hatred for the human race.

Sony’s PlayStation Network woes continue, with the company’s own password reset system – a mandatory step in getting back online after Sony restored PSN services at the weekend – turning out to be a loophole for account theft. Resetting a password required just a PSN account email and the user’s date of birth, Nyleveia spotted: two elements that were among the data stolen in the original hack back in April.

It’s not been an easy journey, either: it wasn’t just server failure that took the PSN offline, but a security breach that saw millions of consumer records snatched out from under Sony’s nose. With only the slightest publicly-released information to go on, systems experts have looked on in horror as Sony took a forced deep-dive through server strata, uncovering the flaws – in its data centers and its ego – that allowed the hack to take place. PlayStation Network is back online [Video]

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation Network is coming back online, with a mandatory system software update (v3.61) for PS3 consoles before they can rejoin the PSN. The phased update has now spread across North American and Europe, though there may be some delay as servers repopulate.
