Sony makes PS Vita dev kits cheap to encourage “garage developers”

A rumor was circulating after the Pokémon Company announced plans for games for the mobile phone segment that Nintendo might finally be bringing its games to the mobile sector. Nintendo quickly denied that rumor and noted the Pokémon Company is an independent. Sony is actively reaching out to what SCE head Shuhei Yoshida calls the "garage developer" including allowing easy porting of games to Android. He says that to shy away from this sort of developer would be the industry's loss.

PS Vita face-tracking demo tips SmartAR gaming [Video]

Sony has demonstrated the face-recognition and tracking capabilities of the upcoming PlayStation Vita handheld, using the portable console's front-facing camera to track head movement and have on-screen avatars respond accordingly. In the demo, filmed by Siliconera and which you can see after the cut, Sony showed a two-way video chat being held between a pair of animated avatars, the head, mouth, eye and other movements being mapped to those of the gamer.

Sony PS Vita May Not Ship Until January 2012?

Sony's PSP successor, which has long been dubbed the NGP for next-generation portable was finally unveiled at E3 2011 as the PS Vita. It promises to bring PS3 console quality games to handheld and was slated for this fall just in time for the holiday season. However, recent reports from online pre-orders through Amazon suggest that the device may not ship until January of next year.

Sony files for trademark on PS Vita logo in EU

We all know that Sony is hard at work on a new portable game console to replace the PSP that hasn't sold well. The code name for the new console was NGP and the device is expected to get official for the first time at E3 this week. I mentioned last week that the source code on the PlayStation site had listed a couple occurrences of the PS Vita name, which is thought to be the official name for the NGP when it lands.
