This is a cool mashup of geek tech right here. I would bet that many of you have looked at the smallish screen on your smartphone before, and though it would be great to have the screen in a much larger size for gaming and watching movies. One modder has decided to take that wish and make it a reality using several pieces of geek tech.

The geek who put the hack together goes by DDRBoxman. He took his Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone and output the video to a projector to toss it up in 50-inch size on the wall. To get the touch control interface back the guy uses a Kinect to see where he was touching and activate the content.

The Kinect in question was hooked to a Windows PC and used a custom app to control the touch interface. This doesn’t sound like something the average geek would pull off. It required a custom ROM. I wonder if you have to touch the wall to activate things on the projected interface. It would be better if you could control it with gestures from across the room. See the hack in action below.

The app is called iProjection and works with any Espon wireless projector, making it easy for the traveling professionals and educators to present without the bulk of a laptop and cables.

The iProjection app works with devices running iOS 4.2 or later, which includes the iPad 2, iPhone 4S, and iPod touch. It integrates cloud features that let users access files from cloud services such as Dropbox and email applications such as Gmail.

The app supports full Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Keynote, and PDF documents. Image files such as JPEG, TIFF, and PNG are also supported. The app is free to download and is available now in the iTunes App Store.

JVC is demonstrating its 4K home theater projectors at CES 2012, which we first saw back in December. The projectors are being touted as the first to display 2D HD content with full 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels or about four times that of full HD. The consumer-focused JVC Procision Series 3D-enabled lineup consists of three models, two of which offer the 4K upconverting technology.

The flagship model is the DLA-X90R, followed by the DLZ-X70R and the DLA-X30. The top two models feature JVC’s 4K e-Shift technology and are also now officially THX 3D Certified. This certification means that the models had to pass more than 400 rigorous tests, including color accuracy in 2D and 3D, crosstalk, uniformity, grayscale tracking, deinterlacing, and convergence.

Other features to note about the projectors include a Lens Memory function that offers three memory settings to store custom focus, zoom, and horizontal or vertical lens shift positions, allowing for a constant height display ratio of 4:3, 16:9, or 2:35 without an additional anamorphic lens. The projectors also allow users to adjust 3D depth and subtitle geometry correction.

The JVC Procision Series D-ILA home theater projectors are available now. The DLA-X90R is priced at $11,999, the DLA-X70R is $7,999, and the DLA-X30 is $3,499.

Pico and pocket projectors have continued to evolve and improve and are become increasingly popular. While just a few short years ago the thought of having 50 lumens of brightness on a battery powered device seemed out of reach. 3M has continued to bring the latest and greatest in projectors to the table. It might not be the brightest, or last the longest but they’ve found a great happy medium with the MP220.

What sets the 3M MP220 apart from the rest isn’t that its fully portable and battery powered, or that it offers 2 hours of battery life. What’s important is they’ve managed to offer an impressive 50 lumens of brightness AND 2 hours of battery life in one compact and portable package. We recently reviewed the AAXA P4 that offered 80 lumens of brightness, and it was impressive but only lasts 70 minutes if you’re lucky.

The 3M MP220 has all the features we’ve come to expect from our pico projectors too. Offering 2GB of internal storage with option micro-SD for expanded storage, micro-USB, and plenty of AV and VGA inputs. Projecting all that across a 65″ screen and a WSVGA (1024 x 600) native resolution. The MP220 also comes equipped with stereo speakers, and a 50 lumen engine that lasts up to 20,000 hours all weighing under a pound.

Like we said above, it might not be the brightest or the smallest — but offering portability, quality, brightness, and that all important battery life all-in-one is the key difference here. The LED-lit navigation buttons were a nice edition as I’ve used a few in the past and trying to find the right button in the dark can be a challenge. The only con from my initial impressions is the lack of HDMI options — a feature many pico’s have been missing.

The 3M MP220 Mobile Pico Projector is slated for a late April launch and will come to market priced around the $479 mark. Expect a full SlashGear review soon!

For a while we thought smartphones would start to adopt the idea of having built-in projectors but that never hit the mainstream. For those still looking for such an option and have a new iPhone 4S loaded full of pictures and videos of friends or family Brookstone has you covered. Showing off their iPhone 4(S) DLP projector case sleeve at CES 2012.

Announced late last year many still haven’t seen or heard of such a device so we figured a few quick photos would give you a good idea of what to expect. This pocket projector is basically an iPhone 4/4S battery-equipped case featuring TI’s DLP Pico projector technology. It will extend the battery life almost double offering a 2,100 mAh battery, and also doubles as a case — just a bit fat and not very ergonomic.

The Brookstone projector case/sleeve only outputs around 15 lumens but being able to project an image up to 50″ in size is quite impressive for its size. 15 lumens might not be as bright as many pico projectors but they aren’t attached to a smartphone either. The projector isn’t anything professional but for the quick video playback or low-key presentation this would be perfect. In real world situations the built-in battery should give you more than double the battery life — but while projecting pictures and movies you’ll have around 3 hours to work with.

Just recently launched by Brookstone this can be yours for the low low price of $229 by clicking here.

We’ve seen our fair share of pico and pocket projectors here at SlashGear, but recently we’ve had the pleasure to work with and review one of the most portable and brightest of them all, a pico with an 80 lumen engine — the AAXA P4 Pico Projector. There are many different uses for a portable projector and whether they are an expensive toy, or a needed accessory is up to you. Head on down for some pictures and hands-on video of this little projector in action.

The recently announced P4 from AAXA is a big step up from previous models such as the AAXA P2, and many similar priced projectors from the competition. Offering extremely crisp colors, great brightness, and being fully portable with a built-in battery makes this a perfect companion for any business minded individual.

Hardware

While many competing projectors might have better battery life its the 80 lumens of brightness and array of options that sets the P4 apart from the pack. Being labeled the “worlds brightest pico projector” gives it some big shoes to fill — and it didn’t disappoint.

The AAXA P4 Pico Projector is powered by a 750 MHz Windows CE mobile processor, and is plenty bright too. It gets an 80 lumen high-contrast optical engine by way of Texas Instruments DLP. It features AAXA’s vibrant color technology and the LED should last for up to 20,000 hours. Some of the other specs that make the P4 special include: 2GB of built-in memory, 1280×800 VGA input, micro-SD slot for extra storage (up to 32GB), composite video input, 1-watt stereo speakers, 3.5mm headphone jack, and even 720p video support.

Included with the projector AAXA has provided a mini tripod as well as your usual charging and USB cables. The box also provides a mini to full-sized USB, VGA and AV input and more. The included remote (as seen in the video below) is a nice touch but is extremely cheap and gives off a bad impression.

The actual projector itself is very durable and feels great. It’s covered in a soft-coat matte black design and all the ports and buttons are extremely durable. Nothing feels cheap about this premium projector — and it shouldn’t for $399. The buttons on top make navigation easy and simple but the remote is a much better option. I would love to have a better included remote but that’s just me.

AAXA P4 Pico Projector unboxing

Software

Now the software side of things will be completely based on the buyers overall needs and usage. With Windows CE 6.0 on board we have plenty of options with mobile applications. With Office Mobile, Microsoft Word, Adobe PDF, and tons of Windows CE based games the options are fairly open. With the P4 AAXA doesn’t recommend you enter Windows too much unless needed and has a basic overlay to keep things straightforward and simple.

Setup is basically non existent unless you need to use Windows CE apps. The standard media player for pictures, and video is simple to navigate — although is pretty bland. From the start screen you can stream any movies from internal or external storage within seconds, the input settings are easy to access and dead simple. Those needing to start presentations will need to launch Windows CE and that takes a bit longer with a warning you must agree to on every start-up seems extreme.

Performance

While I’ve only used a few cheaper and much dimmer projectors in the past, everything about this projector was impressive in terms of performance. The 80 lumen engine is extremely powerful and is by far the brightest portable projector I’ve seen to date. the 750 MHz processor churns out 720p video with ease and my demo shows some impressive output watching AVATAR on a good 40″ size. Fast forwarding through videos or presentations is extremely fluid and there seems to be zero stutter or lag. The only downside to the performance is only about 75 minutes of battery life. To make things worse there isn’t a notification or indicator and once the battery is up you get lights out — no warning.

I can explain performance but instead I’ll just let you all watch the hands-on video demonstration. I start off showing the basic UI in a fully lit room before turning out the lights. The 80 lumens keeps things bright enough that a dark room isn’t required — but sure makes it nice. You’ll be able to use in a lit room with zero problems should the situation present itself.

AAXA P4 video demonstration with light/dark room

As you can see from the video preview the output is extremely bright and impressive, even from a good 6 ft away from the wall. The manual focus makes things very easy for quick adjustments and changes. From the AVATAR scenes in the clip to my Modern Warfare 3 trailer screenshot below you can clearly see just how great the colors are. Thanks to AAXA’s vibrant color technology the colors are exactly that — vibrant.

Wrap-Up

I’ve seen this projector in action for over 2 weeks now. I used it to stream a few clips while visiting family for my extended holiday vacation and everyone was pleasantly surprised by the sound and image output. With 1 watt stereo sound its nothing special but gets the job done. You wouldn’t expect such an incredible bright and vivid picture from this small pocket-able unit — but it does impress.

Battery life is rated for 75 minutes of usage but while outputting 720p video that time dropped significantly and it lasted around 60 minutes for me. While that isn’t very long, completely battery powered is the key here. Being small and weighing under a pound, being fully portable and battery powered makes this perfect for business situations where a full fledged projector isn’t possible. To conduct a full presentation with this quality all on the go with no wires is what sets this apart from the others. For those needing a bigger, longer lasting device for those weekly earnings reports AAXA also has some larger micro projectors to suite all needs.

For a fun toy the pricing is a bit steep but for the on-the-go businessman or professional it should find a place easily in your laptop bag of gear.

The AAXA P4 Pico Projector runs for a pretty penny at around $399 but it’s currently on sale for $339 for a limited time. Get your own today by clicking here.

Ranging in price from $849 to $1,099, the projectors slide into the middle range of Panasonic’s line.

The cheapest is the PT-LX26HU, which makes due with a 2600 lumen lamp and a maximum resolution of 1024×768. Its brother the PT-LX30HU bumps up the lumens to 3000 with a $1099 price tag, but everything else remains the same. If you’re up for a wider experience in your semi-portable projection lifestyle, the PT-LW25HU increases the resolution to 1280×800 with a 16:10 aspect ration, but the lumen rating is lowered to 2500. The more cinematic of the three newbies retails for $899.

Panasonic claims up to 4,000 hours of use before the lamp needs replacing, and you can use the company’s proprietary Multi Projector Monitoring and Control Software to operate the controls remotely. Real-Time Keystone correction allows the image to square itself automatically. The new models should be available immediately at Panasonic’s retail partners, and it looks like they’re showing up an a few online retailers as well, at a significant discount in some cases.

Velocity Micro is out to grab some news ahead of the CES 2012 show kicking off this month. The company has unveiled a new DLP projector called the Shine. The little projector has 300 lumens of brightness and a native resolution of 1280 x 768. That means it supports 720p. The DLP chip is from TI and the projector has 1.4:1 throw ratio. The tiny projector weighs nine ounces and is about 4-inches long on the longest side.

Mitsubishi has its fingers into a lot more than just making cars. That line of automobiles is probably what Mitsubishi is most known for though. The company has unveiled a new concept dashboard system for cars called emirai. The concept looks really cool and reminds me of the dash from a Star Trek shuttle craft. The concept dashboard uses a projector rather than normal gauges.

The rear projector system shoots the gauges and displays onto a curved surface touch display providing all the buttons and controls you might need. Mitsubishi says that it hopes to be using the concept dash in cars in the next decade. I don’t see that happening, touch interfaces for car controls are far from ideal. That half steering wheel won’t make it either, there is a reason steering wheel are round.

The entire system has 18 buttons that are on two keypads on each of the uprights of that wheel. A touch display to the right of the dash allows the user to enter handwriting or characters for input to the system. The system also uses facial temperature and heart rate monitoring to recognize a user and change seat position. This is not what we need if the government wants drivers to be less distracted.

RED looks set to show off its much-rumored 4K laser projector in its first public demo, with the camera company’s RED Studios Hollywood running a demo reel on the new kit for a military-themed “RED Ops Night.” Described as an event “to educate and expose the most cutting edge Red technology to military personnel involved in all areas of media and public relations” the show takes place in Los Angeles tonight.

“We will be showing an Epic reel on our 40 foot screen from our 4K projector including a recent military themed demo reel shot on Red cameras” the company promises, though gives no further technical detail about the anticipated setup. According to the few details shared by RED’s Jim Jannard back in September, the projector is targeted at home users as well as theater use, uses a laser light source and offers passive 3D.

Combined, that was all good enough to make one lucky viewer of the 4K projector prototype to claim it had “generated the best color, best dynamic range and best images I have ever seen in 3D or even 2D.” There’s no mention that we can spot on RED’s ever-enthusiastic forum of the RED Ops Night, though with its military focus it’s possible that the company is keeping things low-key.

[Thanks Nikesh!]

JVC is on hand at the Cedia 2011 expo with some of its cool new home theater gear. The things that caught our collective eye are the line of projectors with 4k resolution. The projectors support up to 3840 x 2160, which is four times the resolution of full 1080p projectors. The projectors include normal and reference series unit.

The consumer focused versions include the Procision Series DLA-X90R, DLA-X70R and DLA-X30. The higher end Reference Series DLA-RS65, DLA-RS55, DLA-RS4800 and DLA-RS45 projectors are the high-end versions. This high-end reference series unit is also have JVC 4K e-shift tech and are also THX 3D certified and can apparently convert 2D to 3D.

That conversion is done with a JVC pro 2D to 3D converter that is derived from its professional converters. While the projector is able to throw images over HD resolution, it does support full 1080p and other resolutions. The 3D projectors use active shutter glasses and have a parallax adjustment to get the ideal 3D image quality.

When it comes to projecting images onto walls, NEC is no chump – and when it comes to bringing forth some professional grade projectors to the scene, the NEC PX700W and PX800X seem to this narrator to be some heavy contenders when it comes down to it. What you’ve got here are two projectors that are made for large auditoriums and venues that require above-average brightness and a need to project to some gigantic screens. In other words, when you bring one of these monsters in your home theater, you’re going to know where your money went – for sure!

Though these projectors are set to be released and promoted to “houses of worship, higher education, corporate and retail environments” as NEC says, there’s no doubt in my mind that should you carve out the larger piece of your home’s lower level and set one of these beasts up, you’ll never need to go to a movie theater again. Both models include HDMI, DisplayPort, USB Viewer and three analog computer inputs, and both contain Windows networking features that’ll allow you the ability to connect to your shared network and do no less than control your networked computer directly through your projector’s USB input to display all your lovely multimedia files.

Then here’s the kicker – the PX series (that these projectors are in) allow for stacking correction which allows up to four projectors to be stacked vertically or horizontally to boost your brightness up to 32,000 lumens! That’s one magnificently undeniable look at Tron or your humble narrator’s test video of choice: Speed Racer! Rich McPherson, Sr. Product Manager of projectors for NEC Display Solutions, speaks thusly on these models:

“Our PX Series is ideal for customers requiring advanced connectivity, high brightness and networking capabilities. The integrated option slot allows users to implement the projector in digital signage applications, which allows greater flexibility when planning an installation. The potential for the PX700W and PX800X to be valuable in lecture halls, training rooms and auditoriums is reliant on its professional-grade quality and multitude of included features.” – McPherson

The power can be yours starting this month on the PX700W and PX800X for an estimated street price of $8799 and $8689, respectively (without lens). You get a 3-year limited parts and labor warranty on either model. Education customers get an additional year on their warranty right out of the box, and Star Student customers receive an additional 2 years. Sound like a deal to you?

The products are the HR274H 3D computer display and the new H9500BD projector. The new display has a cool Acer chip-based 3D conversion solution to turn 2D into 3D with no software required. The display also uses passive polarized glasses that are much cheaper than active 3D glasses.

The display measured 27-inches and has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 for full HD 3D content and video gaming. The 3D chip tech will work with any video card as well. The display ships with a single pair of 3D glasses. Connectivity for the display includes HDMI. The other new product is the H9500BD projector that will support 3D tech from NVIDIA.

The projector also converts 2D to 3D automatically and has full 1080p resolution. It can throw an image up to 300-inches diagonally. The projector uses DLP tech and has a 120Hz and 3D software. It has 50000:1 contrast ratio and uses active shutter 3D glasses. It has 2000 ANSI lumens of brightness and supports 16:9 and 4:3. The projector sells for $1,999.99 and the display sells for $599.

Nikon has release its iP-PJ Transfer App for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch that works with the company’s recently launched Coolpix S1200pj digital camera, which sports a built-in projector. The app lets you use the Coolpix S1200pj to project and share images and documents saved on your iOS device.

This app extends the capabilities of the Coolpix S1200pj beyond projecting photos and videos stored on the camera itself, which features a 14.1-megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom, and supports ups to 720p HD video recording. The camera also features a 3-inch LCD viewer and began shipping back in September for $429.95.

The built-in projector has 20 lumens of brightness and can project on to a 60-inch screen. However, it’s not clear whether it can only project still images and documents or if it can project whatever is on the screen of your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Also, its native resolution is 1024 x 768, so images will be scaled down.

It’s often not easy to collaborate with someone while you are talking to them on your mobile phone the problem is that not all devices allow you to use the touchscreen while on a call. Even if you can use the touchscreen, it’s usually too small to make for comfortable work. Researchers from the University of Duisburg-Essen have an interesting and bulky concept device that makes collaboration using your phone easy.

The phone has a pico projector integrated into it and the projector beams a screen that appears to be the same size as two tablet screens. One of the screens would be the user’s smartphone and the other is the other persons screen. It seems you can drag things from one screen to the other for sharing or working.

The prototype is bulky and not something most folks would use in the real world. However, we have seen patent apps and pics of phones already that have tiny projectors inside. I can see this coming to market at some point and it would be cool. Apple is the company on one of the patent apps for projector phones. Check out the video below to see the prototype in action.

LG has unveiled a new projector that home theater fans will really like. The new projector is the big and powerful CF3DAT. This 3D cinema projector has the power to throw a 200-inch image and supports 2D and 3D content. The projector is very bright with 1250 ANSI lumens in 3D mode. That makes the projector about six times brighter than other premium projectors.

The projector supports full 1080p resolution and it uses Film Patterned Retarder display technology. The FPR tech in the projector means that it can be used with normal polarized 3D glasses rather than the more expensive active 3D glasses. That will make fitting the entire family with glasses much cheaper with the CF3DAT.

The projector is bright enough to be used in large living rooms, museums, auditoriums and other venues. The CF3DAT will be offered in Korea and the global version is the CF3DAA and it will venture outside of Korea is in the first half of 2012. The CF3DAA will not come with a TV tuner. Pricing is unknown at this time.

Eastman Kodak has not handled the transition to digital photography as gracefully as its competitors, but when your company’s over a century old, staying nimble isn’t as easy as it used to be. Of course, a company with that much history has an overabundance of intellectual property, and that fact might help Kodak stay relevant in a market that has been outpacing it for several years. Kodak has announced a deal with IMAX to license its laser projection patents to the movie company, allowing it to more effectively project digital films on its gigantic screens.

For Kodak, it means some much-needed cash to the tune of $10 million, plus undetermined royalty payments for at least ten years. That’s an important chunk of change for a company whose stock has lost three fourths of its value in the last year – shares were up an eyebrow-raising five percent on the news. The licensing deal is part of a $250-350 million plan for the company to pay off its considerable debt.

On IMAX’s part, the new technology will allow it to replace older digital and analog projectors in more of its theaters. IMAX’s equipment is specialized and extremely expensive, so when they upgrade, they intend for it to last. In addition to generally high-quality digital projections, IMAX films using the new patented process will be considerably brighter than their older counterparts. The new projection system is also much more cost-effective, and even for a company that isn’t on the verge of bankruptcy, every penny counts.

This raises an interesting proposition for Kodak, the vanguard of film photography and videography: will the company, now entering its thirteenth decade, become a firm principally composed of its ideas and techniques? With digital competitors like Canon, Nikon, Sony and the rest outpacing them in just about every market except budget point-and-shoots, it might not be bad way for them to continue.

Epson has announced a new line of projectors that are in the PowerLite family. The new projectors include the PowerLite 420, 425W, 430, and 435W. The new offerings are all made for short throw distances and to be bright. Brightness is important since this sort of projector is often used in a classroom or office when it is bright. The projector line starts at $949.

The 420 is the $949 unit, the 425W sells for $1,049, the 430 is $1,049, and the 435W is $1,149. They can be wall or ceiling mounted and are made to project onto a blackboard or a whiteboard. The 430 and 435W are both 3,000 lumen projectors with the other two having 2,500 lumens of brightness. The 420 and 430 are XGA resolution projectors with the 425W and 435W offering WXGA resolution.

All of the projectors have lots of connectivity with HDMI, RJ-45 ports, and USB ports. The line also has a 16W internal speaker, the ability to show things without a computer, and direct power on and off controls. The projectors also have 3LCD technology allowing for more flexible installations. The new line will launch in late-November.

Ricoh has unveiled a new line of projectors that is called the PJ series. The series has five different models including the PJ X3131, PJ WX3231N, PJ WX3131, PJ X3241N and PJ X3241. The range of projectors has many of the same features and they are all aimed at the business user needing high-performance. The projectors will sell for $800 to $1200 each and they vary with different resolutions, network connectivity, and USB features.

All five of the projectors are very bright with at least 2,500 lumens of brightness. The resolution for the range varies from XGA up to WXGA and the all weigh less than 4.4 pounds and come with their own carry case for portability. They all use 3LCD tech making them easier to set up in rooms where there isn’t necessarily a straight shot at the wall or screen. The higher end PJ WX3231N and PJ X3241N both have more connectivity.

Those two projectors have LAN ports and WiFi integrated for connecting to local networks. A USB port also allows the user to give presentations without needing a computer with all the content coming from a flash drive connected to the projector. These should work well for the business user needing flexibility and portability.

RED is best known for its super-high-resolution cameras, capable of making both eyes and wallets weep, but the company has revealed it now has a home 4K projector in the pipeline. Arch teasemeister (and RED CEO) Jim Jannard took to the company’s forums to share the glowing first-impressions from Element Technica co-founder Stephen Pizzo experience with RED’s new laser projector, subsequently confirming that “this [projector] is on our roadmap.”

“After watching a demo of RED’s laser projector I’ve been struggling to find a way to describe it. Comparing it to traditional professional systems is completely inadequate. I have never witnessed 3D that was as bright or brighter as the best 2D projections until now. It generated the best color, best dynamic range and best images I have ever seen in 3D or even 2D. When I learned we were watching at 1/4 of its total resolution I was speechless.

It was so clean and so vibrant the only thing I can compare it to is Cibachrome. That’s it, a giant moving Cibachrome!” Stephen Pizzo, Element Technica co-founder; now partner of 3ality Technica

Later, the exec confirmed that the new RED model is targeted at home users as well as theater use, and that the release date – although not yet public – is expected to be “sooner rather than later.” Technical details of the projector are unclear, though the fact that it relies on a laser system (rather than one of Texas Instruments’ 4K DLP chips) is obvious.

It’s also using a passive 3D system – more details on the difference between passive and active 3D in our SlashGear 101 guide - but seemingly has sufficient brightness so that one of the common complaints of the technology, that it dims the picture, is no longer an issue. Jannard leaves us wanting with his final word on resolution: ”we can easily see the difference between 1080P and 4K delivery on a 10′ diagonal screen. On a 40′ screen it is hugely significant.”

InFocus has announced the addition of a couple new projectors to the IN5300 line up. The new projectors include the IN5312 and the IN5314. The projectors look the same and are designed to support large venues. The projectors offer lens options like short, normal, and long throw lenses and feature horizontal and vertical lens shift. Both models support 720p resolution.

The projectors have up to 4500 lumens and 2000:1 contrast ratios. Both of the units are also 3D capable and have HDMI and DVI-D inputs. The difference between the two projectors is that the 5312 has 4,500 lumens of brightness and a 4:3 aspect ratio. The 5314 is a 16:10 aspect ratio projector for wide screens and has 4,000 lumens of brightness.

Both will connect to PC, Mac, and Linux computer systems. The projectors also sell for the same $3,500 price. Both of them are already available online and can be purchased from retailers as well. Native resolution is 1024 x 768 for the 5312 and 1280 x 800 for the 5314.

Acer has officially launched its K330 projector, the first LED model to pack a 500 lumens LED lamp, and with a footprint smaller than a magazine. Running at WXGA 1280 x 800 resolution and promising a 4,000:1 contrast ratio, the K330 not only offers the usual HDMI, component and composite inputs, but PC compatibility, optional WiFi and even an SD card slot and USB port to bypass your Blu-ray deck or computer altogether.

In fact, there are also VGA D-Sub and both regular USB and mini USB ports, as well as a stereo audio output. Acer reckons the LED light will last for up to 20,000 hours, while the K330 will supposedly sip a mere 1W in standby mode.

It’s the size that’s the real surprise: it was only when we saw the size of the AC socket on the back that we realized quite how compact the K330 is. Acer is positioning it as an ideal home entertainment model but also ideal for traveling professionals, who’ll be able to run multimedia files – including MPEG4 – and presentations directly from a memory card.

The brightness may be a little lower than some, the company admitted to us, but the LED system means contrast is meant to be particularly impressive, especially given the scale. The Acer K330 is on sale now, priced at around £498 ($787).

NEC has unveiled a new LED projector that is aimed at being as portable as possible for the mobile pros that need a projector on the go. The projector is called the NP-L50W and it is LED illuminated for a long life and cool operation. The projector boasts 500-lumens of brightness, which is much more brightness than smaller pico projectors can muster making the L50W one of the smallest fully functional projectors around.

The contrast ratio is 2500:1 and inside the slim projector is a 0.45″ DLP providing 1140 x 912 resolution. The LED light source is good for up to 20,000 hours. That is a huge increase in life span compared to the traditional projector bulb. The projector is small, but has nice connectivity options with HDMI, VGA, and composite connections.

The projector has 1GB of internal storage for your presentations. That storage can be expanded via a SD card slot supporting up to 32GB. The projector supports playback from storage or internal memory of some select photos, video, audio, Office, and Adobe files. The internal speaker is 2W and the projector has integrated wall color correction pre-sets and integrated closed captioning. The projector will ship in October for $799.

Not too long ago there were few 3D projectors on the market and those that were on the market didn’t usually offer 1080p resolution. The market is quickly changing though and now there are a bunch of new projectors coming that will do both 1080p resolution and 3D content at a nice price point. One of those projects is the new Vivitek H1086-3D. The projector has a bunch of nice features and can change 2D content into 3D content on the fly.

The projector supports 720p and 1080i resolution video at 50/60Hz and 1080p 24Hz content from 3D Blu-ray players and other 3D sources. The specs on the projector include 2,000 lumens of brightness and a 5,000:1 contrast ratio. Connectivity includes HDMI, VGA-In, S-video, composite, RS-232, and a 12V trigger.

It has an integrated 5W speaker and weighs 7.8 pounds. It will hit stores in December for $1,999. I am not particularly impressed by the brightness and contrast ratio this projector sports. The projector uses DLP technology, BrilliantColor, and DLP Link tech.

CEDIA is one of the most overlooked tech shows out there I think. Each year the show takes place and I usually forget about it. This is the show where a ton of home theater gear is unveiled for the first time. Epson is at CEDIA 2011 and has unveiled several new projectors for home theater and custom installers that have some very nice features. The projectors include the Pro Cinema 6010, Home Cinema 5010/5010e, and the Home Cinema 3010/3010e. All of the projectors use 3LCD tech.

The 6010, 5010, and 5010e projectors share some of the same features with contrast ratios of 200,000:1 and 2,400 lumens of color and white light output. They also use the Epson Super Resolution tech and FineFrame tech for smoother frame interpolation and better video quality in 2D mode. The projectors use the 2.1 zoom ratio OptiCinema lens and have 2D to 3D conversion capability. The main difference between them is that the 5010e adds wireless capability to the 5010 and the 6010 adds two anamorphic lens modes, two pairs of 3D glasses, ISF calibration, a ceiling mount, cable cover, and an extra lamp.

The Home Cinema 3010 and 3010e also have the same features with the 3010e adding wireless to the mix. Both have 2,200 lumens of color and white light output with contrast ratios up to 40,000:1. The projectors also have dual 10W speakers for sound with no external setup and will work in 3D and 2D modes. The 6010 projector will be offered for under $4,000. The 5010 and 5010e will sell for $3,000 and $3,500 respectively. The previous projectors will land in November. The 3010 and 3010e will sell for $1,599 and $1,799 respectively with an October launch date.

Sony has outed its latest projector, the VPL-VW1000ES, and with it a push to get Full 4K resolution video into the home. The company’s latest flagship, the VPL-VW1000ES runs at a whopping 4096 x 2160 resolution and at 2,000 ANSI lumens, making it four times the resolution and almost twice as bright as Sony’s previous 1080p home projectors, as well as capable of a 200-inch image.

That’s courtesy of a new SXRD 4K panel which, Sony claims, is capable of a 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ration when paired with its Iris3 technology. Dynamic contrast is always a bit of a fudge, but 4K upscaling – from SD or HD content, in either 2D or 3D – is more welcome; anything up to Full 4K 3D is supported, with an integrated IR emitter that works with Sony’s active shutter 3D glasses.

Connectivity includes two triggers for motorized screens and curtains, a 2.1 motorized zoom, and support for home automation systems with an RS232 interface and control over IP compatibility. No word on pricing at this stage, but expect to pay handsomely for this 4K cyclops.

Panasonic has outed its latest home cinema projector, the PT-AR100U, a Full HD model targeting movie, sports and gaming enthusiasts. Boosting brightness to 2,800 lumens – and comfortably exceeding its predecessor, the PT-AE4000U, in the process – the AR100U offers a 50,000:1 contrast ratio and uses various ambient light and color sensors along with its Light Harmonizer 3 processing engine to automatically tweak the picture to suit the room.

That’s only one of Panasonic’s various processing tools, which include the Detail Clarity Processor 3 engine and Pure Color Filter Pro, while there’s also the Dynamic Iris Pro to physically control the projector’s iris, Red-Rich Lamp and gamma curve 60 times a second. All very complicated on paper, but Panasonic reckons it adds up to minimal frame delay or blurring during sports, reduced murkiness in games, and crisper detail in movies.

Connectivity includes a pair of HDMI ports, with support for VIERA Link remote control, and there are two 12-volt trigger terminals so that the PT-AR100U can manage a motorized projection screen and curtains, for instance, as part of a whole-house automation setup. The lens has a 2x zoom, capable of projecting a 120-inch image when between 3.5m and 7m from the screen, while offset positioning is possible with 68-percent vertical adjustment and 26-percent horizontal adjustment.

Availability is set for October 2011, with the Panasonic PT-AR100U expected to be priced at $1,999.

A new Apple patent application that surfaced today reveals that the company is getting serious with its plans to integrate pico projectors into their future devices. The documents show that the tiny projectors would be implemented in next-gen iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices as well as in what looks to be an accessory for Apple’s laptops.

The patent application was dug up by Patently Apple, who reports that Apple has been working on incorporating projection technology into their devices for quite some time now. Apple hinted at an integrated projector system for iOS devices as far back as 2009 and in 2010 filed a patent application for networked projection systems. Then later on in 2010, Apple began working on integrating a projector into a MacBook.

However, today’s patent filing is much more detailed and even includes how the company plans to introduce advanced gesturing so that the system can interpret shadow and silhouette gesturing to carry out certain commands. It also reveals a unified display mode where two separate iOS devices can work together to project a much larger continuous screen and images between the screens can be shared. The amount of details suggest that Apple has worked long at this and is now really pushing forward with this integrated projection system, which could also help boost its adoption in enterprise use.

If you have been reading SlashGear for a while, you might recognize the Light Blue Optics tech that has just crossed the FCC. We have talked about the projector and its touch interface in the past. The Light Blue Optics turned up back at CES in 2010 as an interesting device that turned any flat surface into a color touchscreen. The tech turned up again later in January 2010 we saw the device demonstrated in a room with ambient light.

If you liked that tech and thought it might be just what you need, Light Blue Optics’ pico projector with a touch interface has hit the FCC. The projector is still the same basic device we saw back in 2010 with the ability to turn any flat surface into a touchscreen. The projected touchscreen has a WVGA resolution and the projector uses holographic laser projection and infrared sensors.

The main changes with the new version sitting at the FCC include support multi-touch gestures and it is more finger friendly. The projector also sports a 3.5mm headphone port and has a single mono speaker. The device has composite video and microUSB ports too. The largest usable area the projector can throw is 10.1-inches.

Panasonics has home theater gear ranging from TVs to Blue-ray players and projectors. The line of home theater projectors has grown by one-step today with the unveiling of the new Panasonic PT-AE7000U projector. The new projector is interesting because it offers full HD resolution and 3D in one unit. Many of the 3D projectors out there are only 720p.

The new projector is the first 3D unit in the world to use transparent LCD panels at 480Hz with the Panasonic overdrive tech to reduce cross talk and improve photo quality. Other than being the first to use these LCD panels, the new projector also has some cool features like a 300,000:1 contrast ratio and 2,000 lumens of brightness. The unit also has three HDMI inputs and can throw a 120-inch image from 11-feet away.

The projector has a new 200W red-rich lamp and a larger aperture ratio in the LCD panels for increased red luminance and brightness. The projector also makes use of Panasonic Pure Contrast Plates, Pure Color Filter Pro and Dynamic Iris Pro. The projector will hit Japan in September through authorized dealers at $3,499.

Pico-projectors are relatively commonplace now, but one with an HDMI input is still something of a rarity. MicroVision’s latest model takes last year’s SHOWWX+ and adds in the digital input to make the MicroVision SHOWWX+ HDMI, perfect for easy hook-ups with your laptop or tablet.

Measuring in at 60 x 118 x 14 mm, the SHOWWX+ HDMI uses a laser projection system which means no focusing is necessary: simply point it at a wall and get up to a 2.5m display. Resolution is 848 x 480, which isn’t going to do much justice to your Full HD movies but is at least enough for some YouTube style entertainment. Brightness is 15 lumens and contrast is around 5,000:1, and the HDMI input is HDCP compliant for protected sources.

In addition to the HDMI, there’s the usual component input for use with a regular TV output from a laptop, DVD player or iPod. With the right adapter, meanwhile, you can also hook up a VGA connection, though with many notebooks having HDMI these days we doubt many will need that. The user-replaceable battery is good for up to 2hrs runtime.

The MicroVision SHOWWX+ HDMI is currently available to pre-order, priced at $369. It’s expected to begin shipping imminently.

The last time we talked about a new projector from Acer was back in February when the P5403 debuted. Acer is back with another new projector today called the H9500. The projector is suitable for use in your home theater and has full HD resolution with a 16:9 native aspect ratio. Acer packs the projector with tech to improve image quality. It has DynamicBlack to fine tune each scene for optimal black levels without reducing the brightness of the images.

The tech allows the projector to reach a high dynamic contrast ratio of up to 50,000:1 and the projector has vibrant colors too. Acer also uses True Motion Technology to optimize the image with Motion Estimation/Motion compensation tech for more clarity in fast scenes and to reduce motion blur. The projector also has a True 24p feature allowing for the same frame rate as a movie theater.

The projector has a brightness rating of 2000 ANSI lumens and uses Color Safe II DLP technology. Often with DLP projectors, you give up lens shift features. The Acer H9500 still has lens shift with vertical and horizontal adjustment and it has a 15-degree vertical keystone correction setting to make the image perfect. The projector can throw an image up to 300-inches from up to 32.7-feet away from the wall and a 60-inch image needs 1 meter of distance. The SRRP of the H9500 in Europe is £1699.99 Inc VAT and it is available right now.

In the business world, the mobile pro knows that a notebook and a projector often go hand in hand when it comes to giving a presentation to a group of people on any subject. I have seen more than one business type schlepping a notebook and a giant projector case through an airport in my day, and I am sure none of them like having to do that. This is where Fujitsu comes in with that cool notebook with the optical drive bay pico projector that I wrote about in April.

Fujitsu says that starting in July you will be able to order that pico projector as an option on the Lifebook P771 and S761 notebook models. In April, Fujitsu also said that the projector would be offered as an option on the P711 as well. This time around, we have a few more details on the projector. It will have integrated buttons for brightness and keystone correction, and it uses laser tech to offer color depth and crisp, clear images.

The more interesting thing in the latest release from Fujitsu isn’t that the pico projector in the drive bay will be on these notebooks. That we already knew about. The big news rather is that Fujitsu is also promising that the projector for the drive bay will eventually be offered for any Fujitsu notebook with a modular drive bay. The drive bay projector will ship starting July 1 and will cost EUR 499 with pricing varying by region.

Panasonic has unveiled a new projector that is in its business and education line. The new projector is called the PT-LB3U and has a resolution of 1024 x 768. The projector is made to be small and compact so it takes up less space in a crowded office or classroom. Despite the smaller size of the projector, it has 3,200 lumens of brightness and uses a new lamp drive system. That lamp drive system allows the lamp to last up to 5,000 hours.

The projector measures 12-3/32″ x 2-23/32″ x 8-9/32″ making it more compact than many projectors on the market and it weighs 5.07 pounds. It can be mounted on the ceiling or placed on a desktop. The image the projector can throw ranges from 33 to 300-inches with a 4:3 aspect ratio. It has manual zoom function and needs 300W at maximum setting.

The contrast ratio is 600:1 and it needs 0.3W of power in standby mode. Connectivity includes dual VGA inputs, LAN port, S-video, a serial input, and a single composite connection. The integrated speaker is a 1W mono offering, you will want a better sound system for your presentations. The MSRP for the projector is $1,399 and it is available right now through authorized dealers.

I have long thought that the smartphones we were seeing crop up as future models and concepts that had a pico projector inside were very cool, but would have limited appeal. I think that cramming a projector inside a notebook is a much better idea. There are hoards of users out there that travel for business today and give lots of presentations with a projector to groups of people. Having to schlep a notebook and a projector through an airport and on and off a plane can’t be fun.

Fujitsu has a couple new notebook that mobile workers that have to carry a projector may wet themselves over. The new machines are the Lifebook S761/C and P711/C notebook computers and both of them give up an optical drive to get a pico projector inside the optical bay. The loss of the optical drive won’t be a big deal for many people considering that many ultraportable on the market today have no optical drive either.

The difference in the two machines is the screen size, the S761/C is a 13.3-inch notebook and the P711/C is a 12.1-inch notebook. The pico projector inside the machines is an option and it has a resolution of 800 x 600. The 761 can be fitted with a Core i3-2310M, Celeron B810, or a Core i5-2520M processor. The screen resolution is 1366 x 768 and it has 160GB of storage and 1GB of RAM. The smaller machine has the same processor options minus the Celeron. Pricing and availability are both unknown.

The glasses too have had an update, with battery life boosted to 44hrs and recharging via a standard miniUSB port on the underside. They also boost effective range to 12m, and have shed some grams in weight, too.

The ViewSonic VPD31 is priced at £299 ($483). For more on 3D, check out the SlashGear 101: What is 3D TV? feature from this weekend.

Press Release:

ViewSonic delivers advanced 3D multimedia home entertainment solution

London, UK – 4 April 2011 – ViewSonic Europe Ltd, a global provider of computing, electronics and communications solutions, has today announced the availability of its latest 3D home entertainment solution, designed to convert 3D video content, including 3D TV, 3D Blu-ray movies and 3D PlayStation 3 gaming – so it can be displayed via ViewSonic’s 3D ready DLP projector range. The combined capabilities of the VPD31 processor box and PDG-250 3D glasses will offer users an enhanced 3D viewer experience that also delivers advanced 3D gaming.

The VPD31 is compatible with ViewSonic’s range of 3D ready DLP Link 3D/120Hz projectors and features dual HDMI v1.4a inputs and one HDMI v1.3 output to enable a scalable 3D projection without losing visual quality. To further enhance this 3D experience, ViewSonic’s second generation PGD-250 3D glasses have been designed to be more stylish, foldable and light weight compared to other options on the market. With good resistance against ambient light interference and a long effective distance of 12 metres, the glasses also feature 44 hours of continuous use battery life and are rechargeable via mini USB port on the arm of the glasses.

Trevor Holt, European Product Manager – Projectors, ViewSonic Europe, commented: “After a slow start in 2010, Ovum has predicted that 2011 will see sales of 3D hardware rapidly grow as prices drop due to increased competition. Unlike a television, the VPD31 and projector solution is scalable allowing users to enlarge a 3D image to any size they choose without losing any quality at all. Following its pre-view at CES, the solution has been given great reviews from the gaming community making it one of the most sought after 3D solutions on the market.”

The RRP is £299 inc. VAT

Back in January I mentioned that Holocube had taken its awesome holographic projector system and scaled it up to allow the thing to project human size (and creepy) images. The company is back with a couple new products including one that goes that that cool holographic projector system. The products are Photo booth and Beam Touch.

The Beam Touch system is the one that appears to go well with the holographic projector Holocube offers. This thing provides a link between projectors and the iPad. It allows the user to take the photos that are on their tablet and shoot them over other projector so they can be viewed by multiple folks. The app will hit the App Store soon and will let the user move between images and animations. It’s not clear if it will work with any projector or only the Holocube system.

The other product is an interesting g offering for companies that are at trade shows and other events. It looks like an ATM and is called Photo Booth. The Photo Booth allows the user to print out their photo at no cost and then the photos can be hung to share. HC also notes that it can be used to organize online contests as well.
