‘projector’ Stories

Having sat down with JVC’s 4K2K D-ILA projectors before now, we know the company’s range is certainly capable of some impressive optics.  Still, you’ll need a particularly deep wallet if you want their latest model: the JVC DLA-SH7NLG packs not one but three 1.27-inch 4K2K D-ILA display devices and dual ultra-high-pressure mercury lamps for a total of 5,000 ANSI lumens of brightness.  That’s good enough for 10-megapixel (4,096 x 2,400) images, or five times Full HD resolution.

Just what are Apple doing with pico-projectors in their R&D labs?  Another patent application from the company has been spotted, this time describing various configurations: Apple reckon you could fit a pico-projector into not only an iPhone or iPod, but into an Airport Express style wireless router, a MacBook or a separate accessory.

There are a huge number of projectors on the market today for a myriad of uses. Some of the tiny pico projectors suffer from poor brightness limiting their use. Larger dedicated projectors for home theater and business use typically cram in impressive features and are bright enough for large rooms. The new Canon REALiS SX7 Mark II LCOS projector is aimed at larger spaces.

I really like design concepts that take objects that are mundane and reimagine them in new forms. Projectors are typically boxy devices that you can find in homes, schools, and offices for giving presentations and watching movies. A design concept called the OO wireless projector has turned up at Yanko Design and it has to be the best looking projector I have seen.

Acer have announced two new projectors, which are capable of creating 3D visuals using NVIDIA’s 3D Vision system.  The Acer H5360 and Acer X1261 – intended for home entertainment and work/home/school use, respectively – can project in stereoscopic 3D, with the H5360 outputting in 720p HD resolution with 2,500 lumens brightness and 16:9 aspect ratio.

Could all the Golden-i wearable computer need to be more consumer-friendly be a dashing hat?  Probably not quite – after all, there’s still the rather noticeable eyepiece to take into account – but William Gerwin’s Kodak Sponsored Studio project does do a better job at removing some of the geek-factor to a wearable system.

Samsung Beam I8520 MWC 2010 5 286x500Slapping a pico-projector module into a phone isn’t exactly new, but Samsung’s Beam I8520 is perhaps the first that has us truly tempted.  The smartphone – formerly known by its “Halo” codename – ticks plenty of the boxes many shop for handsets by: it runs Android 2.1 on a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED display with capacitive touchscreen, and has an 8.1-megapixel camera on the back complete with an LED flash.  On top of Android Samsung have used their TouchWiz 3.0 UI, and while we’ve never been especially big fans – in comparison to other manufacture-specific software environments – the whole thing moves along at a decent lick of speed.

Of course, the real interest here is the integrated pico-projector.  Samsung have used a Texas Instruments DLP module running at WVGA resolution, just like the Beam’s own AMOLED display, and it’s triggered by holding down a button on the right-hand side.  Whatever’s on the main display can be projected, and the Beam’s pico has a 6 lumen brightness rating.

I just mentioned that Wisair has a wireless docking station for Mac computers coming in March. It seems that there will be lots of manufacturers taking advantage of the new Mac support in Wisair hardware. InFocus has announced a new system that lets Macs and PCs connect wirelessly to projectors using Wisair tech.

Back in September 2009, I mentioned the new InFocus SP8602 home theater projector and at the time, InFocus was saying the projector would ship in October. The projector never shipped for one reason or another in 2009. InFocus has now announced that the SP8602 projector is shipping.
