Fujitsu are the first to outfit a model from their ultraportable range with the Intel Atom Z550 running at 2GHz.  The Fujitsu LOOX U – variously known as the LifeBook U820 and U2010 in different markets – can now be specified with the faster Atom chip; the existing 1.33GHz Z520 and 1.60GHz Z530 options remain.

AMD has today unveiled the much-speculated Phenom II X4 955 Black version CPU, an upgrade of current socket AM2+ performance Quad-core processors with similar 45nm fabrication, 8MB cache (2MB L2 + 6MB shared L3) and 125W thermal envelope, but offering faster clock speed of 3.2GHz. The new Phenom II X4 also has an integrated memory controller capable of working with DDR3 memory on AM3-based motherboards, up to DDR3-1333 speed, and is backward-compatible with Socket AM2+ DDR2-1066 memory.

intel atom cpuIntel have officially announced two new Atom processors, the Z550 and the Z515.  First tipped back in March, the processors – which Intel expect to find homes in MIDs – run at 2GHz and 1.2GHz respectively, with Hyperthreading supported on the faster chip.  The company also demonstrated their upcoming Moorestown MID platform, which brings with it super-frugal power demands and the potential for smaller devices.

We’ve been hearing about it for awhile now, but Intel officially expanded the availability of their Nehalem-based Xeon processors today. Even though it was first introduced in the Mac Pro, the processors are now available in a wider-range of products.

graphenemitGraphene might be the next material of choice for making processor chips, according to an MIT report. In fact, Graphene, a substance discovered in 2004 that consists of pure carbon, could allow for faster speeds than ever thought possible.

The current research shows that a frequency multiplier could be created, which works to double a signal and likewise doubles a processor’s clocking speed. Color me impressed! This idea is not new, but it is certainly new when applied to Graphene, which possesses only an atom’s thickness.

So, what’s so exciting about this? Well, Graphene chips could make for processors that run between 500GHz and 1,000GHz. That’s quite a leap from the current 5GHz chips, wouldn’t you say? We should see a commercial version of this technology within two years, according to MIT.

intel logoIntel is believed to be heavily discounting its CULV processors – by more than 50-percent according to some manufacturers - in an attempt to promote the consumer ultra-low voltage platform.  HP, Dell and Acer are rumored to have been offered CULV chips at $65 each (when bought in bulk), a considerable reduction from the unit list-price of $152.
