intel culv chipsIntel have reportedly added a further two processors to its CULV (Consumer Ultra-Low Voltage) range, offering dual-core options to manufacturers of entry-level ultra-thin notebooks.  The Celeron 740 and SU2300 run at 1.3GHz and 1.2GHz respectively, and each have 1MB of L2 cache, an 800MHz FSB and 10W TDP.

Apple have been coy about the definitive hardware specifications for their new iPhone 3G S, refusing to confirm exactly how much more RAM and what exact processor jump the smartphone has over the previous-gen iPhone 3G.  However nobody obviously told T-Mobile Netherlands about the veil of silence: they’ve outed the processor as a 600MHz chip, paired with 256MB of RAM.

intel atom logoAccording to those talkative “industry sources”, Intel is preparing to phase out the Atom N270 processor in October by launching its replacement, the Atom N450.  Better known by its codename, Pine View, the N450 will be a single-core chip built on Intel’s 45nm processing line and have an integrated northbridge.  That timescale was last tipped from manufacturing leaks back in May, when it was also revealed that the N280 also faced the chop.

hp dv2 white 368x480We have something of a soft-spot for HP’s Pavilion dv2 ultraportable, the 12.1-inch AMD-powered notebook we played with back in April.  Managing to find space for a capacious 500GB hard-drive, 4GB of RAM and a 512MB ATI discrete graphics card, the only potential downside is the ULV processor.

Now HP are preparing at least two new versions of the notebook, together with a new color option.  Of interest to anybody who found the Yukon CPU of the original dv2 underpowered, AMD’s dual-core Congo and full Athlon X2 processors are set to hit the notebook; there’s also a white version planned.

AMD have announced two new desktop processors, the dual-core 45nm Athlon II X2 250 and the X2 550 Black Edition, their first-ever dual-core AMD Phenom II.  The former boasts a TDP of 65W and nifty throttling to cut power consumption by as much as half when its full capabilities are not needed.  Meanwhile desktop and mobile users will soon have the option of watching worldwide HDTV no matter the broadcast standard, thanks to the AMD ATI Theater HD 750.

You’ve got to admire Intel’s persistence: if you can’t squeeze out AMD with slightly shady business practices, then crush them with new high-end processors.  Two new Core i7 chips have made an appearance, the Intel Core i7 Extreme 975 and the Core i7 950, expected to replace the 965 and 940 chips respectively.

Intel’s next-gen Atom platform, Pine Trail, may have been reasonably well known before now, but the CPU manufacturer has just released [PDF link] the first official details about the new netbook and nettop chips.  Expected to reach the market later this year, Pine Trail’s biggest change is in integrating the graphics core into the processor, slimming down both the overall size and the platform’s power requirements.
