Kindle Singles reaches 3.5 million sold

In addition to announcing some new devices today, Amazon is also touting the strength of Kindle eBook sales. Talking about Kindle Singles - essays, short stories, so forth - specifically, Amazon says that 3.5 million have been sold. Even better is the fact that that 35 Kindle Singles have reached the Kindle top 50, which definitely isn't a bad figure for Amazon to be boasting, especially when Kindle Singles offers less conventional reading material than most are used to.

Kindle Paperwhite arrives with backlit screen

Just as we were expecting, Amazon pulled the veil off the newest iteration of the Kindle today. Dubbed the Kindle Paperwhite, by far the most noteworthy feature about this new eReader is its display. With it, we're seeing Amazon make a departure from the Pearl E Ink display it has used in previous Kindles and instead go for a white display that comes complete with a backlight.

As many of you already know, Amazon is planning to hold a press event tomorrow. We'll be there, and we're expecting Amazon to reveal at least a new Kindle Fire. Rumors are saying that there may be more than that - a "Paperwhite" Kindle eReader, for instance, or even a second Kindle Fire reveal. Nokia gets Windows Phone 8 fever: Lumia 920 and 820 wrap-up

We've been at Nokia's Windows Phone 8 event all morning, and the event has given us plenty to talk about. Most important is the reveal of the Nokia Lumia 920, which many figured was going to be officially announced at this event. The Lumia 920 is here at last, and it's definitely worthy of being called Nokia's new flagship device. Many of you have already heard the rumors that claim Amazon will be revealing a new Kindle Fire next week at a press conference, and when it does, most were expecting to see a larger tablet on offer, similar to Apple's iPad. A new report is shedding some doubt on that, as CNET's anonymous sources claim that Amazon will be announce two new 7-inch Kindle Fires next week. One of these will be only a slightly updated version of the original Kindle Fire, while the other will be a tablet with more beefy innards.

In Berlin amongst the massive avalanche of product announcements from the company, Samsung's CEO spoke up about how their legal battles with Apple are affecting their bottom line. The CEO simply let it be known that "Regardless of any hindrance, we will continue to provide the best product in the industry". Though Apple was not mentioned specifically, it's quite clear that Samsung was referring to the most public "hindrance" they've encountered in the past few years.

The new iPhone (aka the iPhone 5) has been tipped several times by well-connected sources as having an announcement date of September 12 - today there's a multi-sourced addition to that suggestion that says the event will not include the iPad mini. This next-generation size-reduced iPad device will instead be directed at an event in October, when Apple has held Music and iTunes-themed events in the past. This event will be taking place at 10:30 AM PST and will have a special event center planned for it specifically.
