Windows 8 launch invites delivered for massive event

It's time to get pumped up about the release of Windows 8 with a Microsoft press event that everyone and their mother knew was coming - October 25th. This event will show off not only the final release version of Windows 8 on a variety of devices - so we must assume - it'll also contain Microsoft Surface bits and pieces as well. It's clear by now that the Galaxy S III is an extremely popular smartphone, so it's no wonder we've been hearing rumors of a new version of the handset - dubbed the Galaxy S III Mini - off and on for a while. Today we're hearing new rumors of such a device, although this time around there's some lovely photographic evidence to go along with it. It's time to take a peek at the entirety of the iPhone 5's specifications, top to bottom, as the device hits the Apple Store online and we get our first full taste of Apple's new smartphone hero (be sure to have a look at our wrap-up of Apple's big event). This device is the thinnest and lightest iPhone yet with a 4-inch Retina quality display up front and a new A6 chip under the hood. The iPhone 5 works with 4G LTE on a variety of networks both here in the USA and abroad and works with what Apple calls Ultrafast wireless or "LTE. The right way." iPod touch refresh gains Siri and color collection

The iPhone 5 may have been the groundbreaking announcement at today's Apple event, but the iPod Touch is also getting a refresh, and it comes with a number of improvements over the iPod Touch that we're familiar with. For example, Apple is making some big changes to the camera, with Apple including a new iSight camera on the back of this bad boy. iPhone 5 launching in 100 countries on 240 different carriers

We've heard plenty about the iPhone 5 today, but now it's time to get down to the nitty-gritty and talk release information. Apple said during its event today that iPhone 5 pre-orders will open up on September 14 - two days from now - and it will be launching in some countries on September 21. iPhone 5 revealed as ‘world’s thinnest smartphone’

The iPhone 5 has officially arrived folks, and Apple is making some pretty big promises about it. The first is that it’s the “world’s thinnest smartphone.” In his announcement, Phil Schiller revealed that the iPhone 5 is 7.6mm thick, which is an 18% decrease in thickness over the iPhone 4S.

Apple prepping Yerba Buena Center for iPhone 5 reveal

The fact that Apple is holding a media event on September 12 has been all over the place lately, and as we close in on the date, anticipation is beginning to build. Here's something that won't help at all with that anticipation: Apple has started prepping the Yerba Buena Center ahead of the event, with 9to5Mac and Macstories both posting pictures of the exterior and interior of the building. Kindle Singles reaches 3.5 million sold

In addition to announcing some new devices today, Amazon is also touting the strength of Kindle eBook sales. Talking about Kindle Singles - essays, short stories, so forth - specifically, Amazon says that 3.5 million have been sold. Even better is the fact that that 35 Kindle Singles have reached the Kindle top 50, which definitely isn't a bad figure for Amazon to be boasting, especially when Kindle Singles offers less conventional reading material than most are used to. Kindle Paperwhite arrives with backlit screen

Just as we were expecting, Amazon pulled the veil off the newest iteration of the Kindle today. Dubbed the Kindle Paperwhite, by far the most noteworthy feature about this new eReader is its display. With it, we're seeing Amazon make a departure from the Pearl E Ink display it has used in previous Kindles and instead go for a white display that comes complete with a backlight. Amazon smartphone reportedly in the works, possible reveal tomorrow

As many of you already know, Amazon is planning to hold a press event tomorrow. We'll be there, and we're expecting Amazon to reveal at least a new Kindle Fire. Rumors are saying that there may be more than that - a "Paperwhite" Kindle eReader, for instance, or even a second Kindle Fire reveal.
