We have all been there, 30 outlets, but only able to use 6. Nothing is more frustrating than buying a monster power strip with 30 or more outlets only to find most of them are un-useable. Not because there is something wrong with the outlets, but the shape of the power adapter you are plugging in ends up covering 2 or 3 additional outlets. Then there are those fat power adapters that can only be plugged in from one angle and naturally that angle makes almost half the power strip useless. Pivot Power, from Quirky has a solution. Pivot Power is a flexible power strip that can help reduce some of that frustration.

Each outlet on the Pivot Power can bend or flex to help find a more convenient angle to plug something in. There is a hinge between every outlet on the strip. This allows more flexibility when choosing how to plug something in, literally. They only swivel in the side to side direction; it would have been nice to see one or two of the outlets bend in the vertical direction also. But as it is, the Pivot Power could probably help simplify the process many of us have to deal with when trying to find a free outlet.

It comes in white with six feet of cord and six flexible outlets. Six outlets is not enough for most of us, so we will have to buy a few. Just don’t give in to the temptation to daisy-chain the power strips together in a long line with one plugged in to another. It offers 672 Joules of surge protection, and is available for $29.99. Not the only power strip solution of its kind, but we like the overall design. It looks like it will match Ikea style décor. (That may or may not be a positive for you.)

Everything’s heading to the cloud these days, and powerstrips are no exception. The Ubiquitous iRemoTap is a powerstrip that boasts a built-in wireless LAN that connects to the internet so that you can remotely turn on and off anything attached to it via your mobile device or desktop web browser.

The motivation behind the concept and prototype is to help people save energy. Should you leave home and forget to turn off a light or some other device attached to the powerstrip, you can do so right from your phone. The powerstrip can also be customized to allow for certain usage limits. Once those limits are reached, you can be notified by email or by tweet.

The browser and mobile app from which you control the powerstrip also lets you know the power status of what’s connected. For instance, if you can’t remember whether or not you’ve turned off a light in your house, you can easily check the online system for the on/off status.

Currently, the iRemoTap is still just in the research and development phase. But, Ubiquitous hopes to eventually be able to bring the device to market at a price point below 10,000 Yen or $122. What do you think about the concept?

I have seen a few power strips that use timers or have a button that the user can press to turn off connected items when they are leaving. The catch is that timers may leave things on for longer than you are actually using them and many folks just don’t remember to turn things off when they leave. A new power strip called the HiSaver has debuted that uses motion-sensing tech.

The HiSaver has a motion sensor that you can place on your desk that will sense when you leave the room and after you are gone for ten minutes the thing will turn off all the gear that is plugged into the four power saving outlets. The power strip does have one outlet that always has power for your PC.

The idea is that when you leave the power strip will turn off the peripherals like your printer, speakers, and other gear. The power strip also offers surge protection to protect your electronics and one of the four power saving plugs can be switched to always on if you need another outlet that stays on all the time. The power strip isn’t cheap at $109 and you can buy it now from Tomauri.

Press Release:

Save Energy with Four New Belkin Conserve Products

Energy readouts and controls help you make smarter usage decisions in the home
Detect your device’s energy waste in costs and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions with the Conserve Insight™ Energy Use Monitor

(Playa Vista, CA) – June 15, 2010 – To help people reduce their carbon footprint and lower their electricity bills, Belkin today announced four additions to its Conserve line of energy-saving accessories. Elegantly designed and easy to use, the Conserve Insight, Conserve Socket™, Conserve Valet™, and Conserve Smart AV™ make it easy to save energy and minimize your environmental impact.

With the size of the green marketplace estimated to reach $845 billion by 2015, energy management is emerging as an important new product category (Natural Marketing Institute). In a December 2009 survey conducted by Horizon Research and commissioned by Belkin, 81 percent of respondents indicated they would “make sure to reduce their household use of electricity that month if they noticed that their electricity bill was too high the previous month.” These are two of many findings that highlight people’s growing awareness of and desire to reduce energy consumption. Other important statistics include:

The average cost of energy wasted from home electronic entertainment devices left on but not in use is $76 per year.*
1.2 billion metric tons of CO2 is produced to generate electricity for one year of residential use in the U.S.†
100 billion kilowatt hours of electricity are consumed in the U.S. for standby power.‡
Recognizing this demand, Belkin’s new Conserve products aim to empower people to make better decisions around their energy usage. With its easy-to-read display, the Conserve Insight energy-use monitor helps you monitor your energy use by showing how much devices really cost-in watts, dollars, and carbon dioxide. Plug a device, such as a TV or microwave, into Conserve Insight to see the true impact to your wallet and the environment.

The Conserve Smart AV auto-off surge protector detects when your TV is turned on or off, and shuts down power to connected components-like video game consoles, DVD players, and home theater equipment-so that no energy is wasted when the TV is not turned on.

The Conserve Valet smart charging station is a convenient place to charge all of your mobile devices, and it also helps save energy by shutting off automatically when the devices are fully charged. (A charger left plugged into the wall can still draw power-even when no device is attached.) The Conserve Valet charges up to four devices such as cell phones, music players, and handheld video games, and it also reduces cable clutter.

The Conserve Socket power timer automatically shuts off power after a time interval you select. This helps save energy and makes a home safer by timing the power to devices such as curling irons, fans, and space heaters.

These four products join the Conserve Switch™ and the Conserve Surge, which enable energy conservation by reducing standby power in homes and offices.

Designer Soon Mo Kang has taken a simple thing as a power strip, and has turned it into something much more versatile. It’s still a power strip, but its almost LEGO-like parts, LEDs, and labels helps to keep track of what’s plugged in where.

As Gizmodo stated, the Multi-Tab strip, by designer Soon Mo Kang, does three things that most power strips don’t:

1. Modular construction means you can expand it at will
2. Each plug accommodates a sticker label so you know what it’s powering
3. Components can be turned on/off individually, as marked with an LED

Even though it’s not the most technically complicated or advanced power device there is, the simple, yet smart design makes it something that I’d get in a heartbeat, as it does everything that a power strip should do, and even more.

No, the Panamx power management and filtration systems will not be able to reduce your excessive PS3’s fan noise or your power bill. But it will improve your overall Home-theater system by removing common ground problems like speaker hum, regulate the power flow by keeping the voltage in range and protect your luxurious audio video devices in the event of a surge.

Could this be the most complicated power strip yet? The snappily-titled Power Cost Controller Power Strip is intended to not only replace your current surge protector but also replace your energy-squandering ways thanks to a big dose of electric-reality. Consumption and cost are both displayed on the LCD display, measured in kilowatt-hours so you can directly compare with your energy provider’s prices.

The strip also stores records of power use, viewable by hour, day, week, month or even year, so you can see whether you’ve become eco-friendly or eco-fiendish. Anyone concerned about the quality of their power supply can also use the system to check voltage, line frequency and power factor. It’ll handle 8 to 8,000W appliances, and has eight sockets.

Of course, unless you have only eight electrically-powered devices in your home, this gadget isn’t going to tell you your whole-house performance. For that you might want to look at one of the systems that fit to your main circuit box. However they tend to be more expensive than the (still not cheap) $99.99 Computer Gear are charging, and this at least lets you target some of your profligate electronics. It’s available now.

The Energy Saver Bar is a lot like that gadget that Belkin came up with, but far less cool. Essentially you plug in all of your home theater equipment, preferably the kind that won’t suffer drastically from having its power completely cut, and then when you are done, you turn ever thing off, and then hit the button on this power strip and watch the energy savings go up.

The wire on the switch is 1.5 meters away, but for that “luxury” you pay 20 Euros instead of the 3-4 Euros of a normal power strip where you have to bend over to flip the same switch. It does, however, appear to also have straps built in so you can easily mount it, it appears a bit sturdier than most power strips, and it seems to have rotating receptacles so you can fill up the strip instead of wasting ports because the plug is too large, so, it could be worth it.

Belkin’s design on the other hand came with a wireless switch that also looked cool, it also had more plugs on it, and it even had a pair that weren’t shut off, so you’d have the option to leave some things running like your TiVo and SlingBox or your Router and Modem. However the Belkin option probably costs even more.

Splashpower, one of the many companies striving to bring us all wireless charging in our gadgets, has sadly had to end its run. It never even really produced an actual product, but they did do a lot of research and development which hopefully someone will pick up the pieces from.

They did actually sort of have a couple products, although I never saw them, they were two different pads that required a special attachment for the device that you wished to charge and then the device had to be set directly on the pad in order to charge. So basically it wasn’t any more convenient than saving yourself some money and plugging it in the good old fashioned way.

Honestly with Splashpower, WildCharge, eCoupled, and the countless other startups like it I saw at CES and MacWorld its really not much of a surprise that at least one of them ended poorly, I am sure there are more to fall until one of them comes up with an actually revolutionary solution that the others can copy. Until then ladies and gentleman, I’ll continue using way more power strips than is healthy in order to charge all my gadgets.

The BlueLounge Sanctuary is a product that is shaped/styled a lot like a Mac Mini, but its used to store your daily fare. Below the surface of this gadget there are integrated charging tips for charging up to 1500 mobile devices and then a USB port for the fifteen hundred and first one that isn’t covered.

This way you don’t have to worry about buying this device and then having to spend another $100 on tips that you are likely to lose, they are all already built in. There is also space enough to hold your spare change, money, wallet, keys, etc. alongside your iPod, cell phone and Bluetooth headset as they charge.

Personally I’d love to have one of these as I’m constantly charging 2 mobile phones, a Bluetooth headset, and my iPod, and occasionally a pair of Bluetooth Headphones, and currently I use whatever fitted hat I wore that day to throw it all in, so this would definitely be a more organized method of temporary storage and charging. If you want one they will cost you $129.95 and are available from BlueLounge, FrontGate, and BlueLounge retailers this spring.

Ladies and gentleman, we have finally arrived. A manufacturer finally took notice of the increasing number of devices that charge via USB and has been kind enough to finally start integrating that technology into surge protectors/power strips.

As an added bonus this one is made nice and small and compact for easy travel use so you aren’t sitting in your miniscule hotel room with two outlets and a laptop, cell phone, camera, iPod, Bluetooth headset, and printer that all need power for charging or for use. You get 3 regular power receptacles and 2 USB ports on the end that provides power.

I think the only thing they could do to make this product better would be to add 3 more ports to it and make on of them the host port so you could use it as a powered hub as well, I mean, it’d be perfect for Rock Band, you could plug in all your instruments and your Xbox 360 or PS3 in one plug. If you want one it will cost you $24.99 which is on par with some of the more reliable single port USB chargers of seen as of late.

There are a total of 8 outlets on this surge protector. The two that aren’t included in the outlined box are the only two “always-on” outlets on the strip.

All of the other outlets are controlled by a wireless power switch allowing you to eliminate the phantom power consumed by a lot of today’s gadgets that never really shut off. That means you could use this to turn off your monitor, speakers, external hard drives, computer, and printer, but leave your modem and router on for the other users that want to connect.

Or you could use it to turn off all your home theater components leaving on only your cable box and TiVo so your shows still record but the large amount of phantom power your large LCD TV steals won’t be lost anymore. The uses are nearly endless, and the best part is the switch isn’t some little keychain remote that you are likely to lose, it’s a fairly large, mountable, switch that looks fashionable and would actually be kind of hard to lose, no word on price or availability as its not out yet, but hopefully they start producing them soon.

Take a look at you midget-side desktop speakers, a/v switcher or wireless router. Some of them are big, enough to occupy two outlets.

The 8-outlet on side can rotate up to 90 degree makes it easy to manage varies sizes of AC adapters. The T12 is rated at 1875 watts with surge protection and has noise filtering system on Network, Modem, Telephone and F-connector. But priced at $120 on a power strip is not exactly affordable.

There are a few main things that people are likely to focus on when buying anything: does it take up a lot space, how versatile is it and how accessible is it. If your product falls within a decent range on any of these fronts people are more likely to pick it up without even worrying about the cost. In my opinion the clamp-on surge protector from Belkin fills all these shoes nicely.

It will, of course, clamp on to different surfaces like desks, tables, workbenches, etc. It’s 1.5” in height and since it’s small and portable you can place it wherever you need it, conveniently. It has 6 outlets and a 10ft cord and comes with a $15,000 connected equipment warranty.

It does its job without looking trashy and without taking up needed space anywhere. The $41 price isn’t too bad either.

Common Surge protector allows only one main power switch for all the outlets. Belkin’s engineers tweaked the drawing board and came out with an energy saver surge protector. The new Conserve Surge Protector offers 8 outlets in which 6 of them can be turned off via a remote so you are able to shut off miscellaneous items on the ‘remoted’ outlets and keep the main 2 outlets on. The Popular Mechanics likes it so much, they picked the Belkins as Popular Mechanics’ Editor’s Choice Award at the CES 2008. The device is neither an automated nor a programmable outlets; it’s still rely on user to trigger the switcher, except with a remote this time. If you are a lazy person, it is not going to save your electronic bill.

If first impressions were the most important thing this product would be screwed. This device is created to hide your cords, it looks pretty much like it’s made out of cardboard or poster board. At least it isn’t just a screen, it is also a power strip as well.

I honestly thought the thing was made of cardboard upon first glance. I also think that the device itself is extremely unattractive, I’d very much prefer the cords lying around to this thing. All around it’s just a mediocre design.

To make things worse the price is completely and utterly ridiculous. This truly sad power strip is being sold for $165. I’m really curious how anyone actually thought this was a good idea, I suspect alcohol was involved.

Over at Gear Diary Kerry Woo is unwittingly making me feel guilty about my computer setup – yes, I’m surge protected (well, not me personally) but seeing them review Belkin’s Battery Backup with Flashlight reminds me that should the power go out it’ll instantly take the PC with it. UPS (uninterrupted power supplies) used to be huge, ugly grey blocks that lurked in the corner, but Belkin are making overtures for more visible areas of the house with a design that’s both vaguely attractive and also includes a handy battery-powered torch.

With only four battery-protected sockets (plus a further two which are surge-protected but not UPS linked) this isn’t going to be suitable for even the smallest of office environments, and Belkin warn only one computer system should be plugged in at a time, but come the fateful day when the power dies on you it’ll give you up to twenty minutes to finish what you’re doing and shut down safely.

Belkin include PC software that can monitor the Battery Backup and automatically shut the machine down if you’re not there to do it manually; it’s not, however, compatible with Macs. Less platform-specific is the loud buzzer which warns you that you’re running off-grid. Finally, the detachable flashlight magically turns on as soon as the power goes out; handy, but I have to disagree with one of Kerry’s comments in the review:

“It’s never fun to panic in the dark!”

Obviously you’ve never taken a walk through the park at night, Kerry – you bring your flashlight and I’ll bring the thermos! The Belkin Battery Backup with Flashlight retails for a not-unreasonable $99.99.

In this digital age, its surprising that there aren’t more innovations in the way we supply and power all our gadgets. With all the plugs, cords, chargers, and charging stations that have taken over our lives, we need an advanced outlet system to match. So, any powerstrip concepts are a welcome sight, including this one by PlugKing. The device enables you to snap together your own custom powerstrip with only the types of plugs you need. I’m not sure how practical this is, since there’s usually just the common two-prong or the three-prong grounded plugs here in the States. And I don’t imagine plugging my mega four-prong washer and dryer onto the same strip as my cellphone charger. But nonetheless, the concept is interesting, and remains only a concept for now.
