The portable Card Mini Boom Box

A bit of nostalgia for your MP3 player. This faux boom box is a bit of a do-it-yourself project. It's shipped as flat cardboard with two speakers and two AA batteries. I can't guarantee that the sound quality will be phenomenal, but it would be a cool desktop speaker system for the cubical. Read The Full Story

ASUS Xonar U1 USB Sound Card

This portable USB sound card looks a little like a really thick hockey puck, but apparently it works really well at providing a portable audio upgrade solution for, say, a laptop. It offers up an audio out and an audio in jack and comes paired with an array mic, for whatever you might want to use it for. On top of that, the technology inside is where it gets really fun, starting with support for a bunch of Dolby technologies as well as several DSP modes. The people over at Everything USB really seem to like it, they didn’t have too many complaints. Read The Full Story

Rumor: Apple entering ultra-portable fray again

AppleInsider is at it again pushing their theory of an ultra-portable MacBook configuration. They first predicted it would come shortly after the release of Leopard, now they are pushing that back to MacWorld in January. They reckon the ultra-portable will lose its optical drive, be smaller than the 15” MBP and at least 50% lighter than the same. On top of that they say it will utilize NAND flash storage in the form of an SSD drive and it will use and LED backlit LCD, both of those primarily to save battery life and improve boot times. Crosley Keepsake Turntable

It’s a portable record player from about 50 years ago, maybe more, but its being manufactured today. It will play your records, and it has 3 speeds, so it will play all sorts of vinyl. The best part comes in its more discreet feature of being able to hook it up to your PC via USB and use the included software suite to rip your records to a digital format. Then you can put it on CD or add it to your favorite digital media player. Read The Full Story

Intel X3100 Chipset support found in Leopard install

Support for Intel’s X3100 mobile graphics chipset could mean that Apple has plans for a quick and dirty MacBook hardware refresh. Apple has generally stuck with ATI or NVIDIA graphics for their Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, and iMac line-ups, and the X3100 is a mobile graphics solution, so that means either the MacBook or the Mac Mini are getting the update. Regardless of which one it is, the X3100 graphics chipset only works on the Santa Rosa platform which means that Santa Rosa is either getting added to the MacBook, the Mac Mini, or Apple is releasing a new, slightly lower end, MacBook Pro. The latter is possible due to the rumors of an all aluminum (like the MacBook Pro’s) 13” ultra portable being in the works, combined with the fact that the MacBook Pro’s are the only mobile line of Apple’s that already support the Santa Rosa platform. Festival Stereo from MAKE

Well, they don’t actually tell you how to make it, some reader wrote in from Sweden showing off his latest creation. Although there are apparently specs so you can build you own in his Flickr account. It looks like either a guitar amp or some other professional grade speaker that the guy built in a car radio and cup holders, for beer. I assume there is also a fairly hefty battery built in to power the thing, otherwise its portability is decreased to wherever there is an outlet. Read The Full Story

Plextor’s portable HDTV tuner reviewed

, Oct 19th 2007 Discuss [0]

Portable TV tuners have reached such a low price point that one of the only ways for profit-seeking manufacturers to turn is HDTV; for the entertainment-seeking road warrior, that means a new generation of portable television that promises super-high resolution.  However, with even standard definition tuners sometimes suffering from poor quality except when used with a fixed aerial, the difficulty is not in building the USB dongle itself but an antenna capable of receiving a strong enough signal.  TabletPCReview picked up Plextor's PX-HDTV500U to see if it could manage.   Read The Full Story

Fujitsu LifeBook U810 review roundup

, Oct 18th 2007 Discuss [5]

If you've been even just a little tempted by Fujitsu's indecently-compact LifeBook U810(the US version of the U1010) then you'll be pleased to know that there're a growing number of reviews for the tiny convertible.  Obviously when you're playing with something that measures close to 6-inches square the usual rules about "no fat fingers" apply, but if you've got the digits for it then seemingly it's a good travel companion.   Check out after the cut for a video review of the U810 plus commentary Read The Full Story

Rumor: New 13-inch Apple ultra-portable dropping with release of Leopard?

Now the rumored 13-inch size would lead one to think MacBook. However the slathering in brushed aluminum, points to a MacBook Pro. A 13-inch MacBook Pro would retain the size and shape of the MacBook, but would grant it the Pro features, namely faster processors, more memory, Santa Rosa, better graphics, the list goes on as to what the upgrades from a MacBook to a MacBook Pro are. I personally think a slightly smaller, but equally powerful, addition to the Pro line would be great. Read The Full Story

Samsung VM-DX10 Camcorder

Everything is going down the drain; hybrid is the catchphrase of the decade. Proof is in the pudding, and there is now a hybrid camcorder, it reords to either a DVD or any portion of the 4GB of flash that’s on board. There is even a bigger touch-screen on this thing than some other portable devices where the touch screen is a major selling point, 2.7 inches of touch-sensitive goodness to be exact. This beauty popped up at the Korean version of CES, called KES, go figure. Read The Full Story
