Sony MZ-RH1 Hi-MD Walkman faces axe (but MiniDisc lives on!)

Goodbye, MiniDisc, we loved you. Well, perhaps not love, but at least a grudging regard. Unfortunately, grudging regards don't add up to sales, and Sony has decided to axe the MZ-RH1 MiniDisc Hi-MD Walkman in September this year. Worry not about your precious MiniDiscs themselves, however; those still using the format will have time to stock up. Read The Full Story

iRiver P8 PMP breaks cover with slick interface and more

iRiver has been around for a long time making some interesting PMPs and other devices for music and video fans to take with them wherever they go. One of the last items that we talked about from iRiver was the small T9 MP3 player back in May. The new product that has surfaced from iRiver is much more interesting than the low-end T9. The P8 has a big 5-inch touchscreen and a very slick interface with widgets and more that looks like it came from Cupertino. Read The Full Story

Gadmei P83 PMP does 3D with no glasses on the cheap

I would have to say that this is one of the more interesting items that Brando has ever had on its website. Generally the company has cheesy USB gear that is of questionable value. This PMP, which looks more like a tablet, certainly won't beat out many of the more popular and well-known PMPs in most minds, but the thing is cool nonetheless. It’s called the Gadmei P83 3D PMP. Bill Gates speaks: Yes to Zune, No to Microsoft CEO job

Dr. Evil impressions, Zune defensiveness and a willingness to give away $28bn dollars: can you blame us for liking Bill Gates? The Microsoft chairman has been talking to UK paper the Daily Mail, and while the focus is the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization which kicks off today, there's still plenty of time for gadget anecdotes and singing Travie McCoy's Billionaire. Sony PS3 sales slowing; NGP needed ASAP

, May 26th 2011 Discuss [2]

You love charts, we love charts, and Sony sure loves charts when they confirm PS3 sales were headed skyward in 2010. The company has released its full-year 2010 financial results (up to March 31 2011) and revealed that 14.3m PlayStation 3 consoles were sold in the twelve month period. Interestingly, though, 2010 holiday season sales (Q3 on Sony's calendar) were down in comparison to 2009, from 6.5m to 6.3m, while the three month period at the start of this calendar 2011 also dipped year-on-year. Oversized iPod touch PMP/tablet hybrid tipped ahead of iPad 3

Steve Jobs may have dismissed 7-inch slates as "tweeners", but that doesn't mean the company isn't considering an oversized iPod touch according to the latest batch of rumors. Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims Apple is working on a "big iPod touch" with a screen size of around 5-inches, AppleInsider reports, likely with the same resolution as the current model and offering the same PMP UI rather than the iPad UI. Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 hands-on

Samsung's Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 isn't the only Galaxy S family PMP the company has that's new at MWC 2011 this year; there's also a smaller, 4-inch version - rather predictably called the Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 - on show. Based around a 4-inch WVGA Super Clear LCD TFT display, it's actually the same as the YP-GB1 we've seen before, running Android 2.2 Froyo. Read The Full Story

Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 hands-on

All eyes were on Samsung’s larger Galaxy Tab 10.1 at MWC 2011, but if you judge a Dell Streak 5 a tablet by virtue of its 5-inch display, then the Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 has to be considered one as well. The 5-inch PMP looks like an oversized Galaxy S – unsurprising, since Samsung considers it a varient with 3G missing – with a WVGA display, 720p HD playback and a pair of cameras for video chat and photography.
