Sure, many kids will be putting down the Xbox 360, Wii and PS3 on their wishlists this year. However, the PS2 is far from finished. I’ve personally had mine since launch, and still use it on a fairly regular basis. There are plenty of good games out there, so its no surprise that it is still selling rather well. The good news is that a price drop may soon be coming.
By now we’ve all heard about a new 40GB model of the PS3 that will be available very soon. However, the big question is what exactly will be under the hood of the new console. We already know that it won’t be playing nice with your old PS2 and (gasp) PSX games. Rumors are now pegging the 40GB PS3 as having something else different under the hood.
Some people will say that having a choice is a beautiful thing. I won’t deny the truth behind that statement, as life would be pretty bland without choices. However, sometimes there are so many choices that one has no idea which one to choose. Take game consoles, between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, there are nearly a dozen choices. If you’re looking at a PS3, here’s a good Venn diagram that should help you in your decision.
I enjoy my Xbox 360, it sees a lot more action these days because I can play Guitar Hero on it. However, despite the fact that it’s a generation (not to mention many years) old, I still love my PlayStation 2. It has been a faithful console, and has been with me for many years. Unfortunately, according to analysts, the console may finally be put out to pasture.
There’s no denying the fact that the PlayStation 3 has power. What it doesn’t have are a ton of good titles and high sales figures. The latter is no doubt tied to the former, but unless the sales start to pick up, Sony may have trouble finding developers that want to produce good titles.
If you’ve got a PS3, that means that you use a SIXAXIS controller that generally gets its charge from a USB cord attached to your Playstation. There’s nothing sexier than a cord hanging from your wireless controller. This cool stand from Pelican might be a better option.
There have been rumors floating around about a new 40GB version of the Playstation 3 coming soon. If you remember, a price scanner at Target had it pegged at a $399 price. Well, it has been officially confirmed by Sony, and we’ll also be seeing a price cut on the 80GB model.
So let’s say you have roughly $5000 sitting around and want to make a supercomputer. You could try and hunt for the necessary hardware, such as RISC processors, motherboards with high speed bus’ stuff like that, and probably spend a small fortune, or you could buy 8 PS3s.
I don’t know how much you do or don’t know about the PS3’s hardware, but 8 PS3s will net you 8 very, very, powerful Cell processors that are made specifically to do mathematical computations really, really fast, which is great for a supercomputer. You also get some seriously speedy system buses, high speed memory and since I am pretty sure these are all 60 GB models, 480GB of storage, which may not seem like a lot, but that’s probably enough for about 1 project, then you’d probably have to offload it.
I’ve been saying it for a long time. The PS3 was priced too high when it made its debut. Naturally, like everything else, it was priced even higher when it finally was released in the UK. Was it actually priced too high? According to recent sales, consumers are saying yes.
Target of all places is where this was discovered, and then some other guy fact-checked it with the Best Buy database, and sho nuff, it was there. So it looks like we are definitely getting the 40GB PS3 at closer to Xbox 360 prices.
I wonder what they’ll be doing to help make the 60GB models move now they they’ll have a 40, 60, and 80 gigabyte models all sitting on the shelves collecting dust? You know what the PS3 needs, a great exclusive title. Sony needs their Halo, their Bungie.
