More details on the ASUS Eee PC 1215N are seeping out, ahead of the netbook’s expected debut on May 13th, and it’s shaping up to be a pretty impressive ultraportable. According to AllAboutEeePC the 1215N will indeed have the new dual-core 1.5GHz Pine Trail Atom N500 processor expected to hit production in July, together with NVIDIA’s Ion GPU. However, unlike the Eee PC 1215PN, the 1215N will support NVIDIA Optimus for automatic graphics switching.

That means the 12-inch netbook should be capable of 1080p HD output but also able to scale back its graphics prowess when it’s not required so as to eke out extra battery life. Regular browsing and emailing will rely on the standard Intel GMA 3150 GPU, while multimedia and even gaming will use the 16 core Ion.

Actual performance figures are unknown at this stage, as are battery estimates, but the ASUS Eee PC 1215N is predicted to go on sale come July 2010. Pricing is expected to be between $550 and $600, making it expensive for a netbook but – if the dual-core Atom and Ion GPU can live up to expectations – comparatively cheap for an ultraportable.

Of the new netbook models ASUS unveiled at CeBIT last month, the most interesting has to be the Eee PC 1018P. Toting not only Intel’s latest Pine Trail Atom N455 and N475 processors, the netbook has Bluetooth 3.0 and USB 3.0 connectivity along with the promise of 10hrs runtime. TechInStyle.tv have got their hands on the 1018P, and the brushed aluminum chassis certainly doesn’t let down the high-spec guts.

You can clearly see the bright blue USB 3.0 ports on the side, and they’re right next to a flap-down ethernet port similar to the space-saving design Sony used on their VAIO X. It seems a shame to only VGA rather than HDMI display connectivity, though given the Eee PC 1018P lacks anything like NVIDIA’s Ion GPU it would be wasted anyway.

Back at CeBIT we were told the 1018P would come with integrated 3G, though there’s no word on whether that will be a standard-fit feature. However we do know about there being 1-2GB of RAM, a 250GB to 500GB hard-drive, 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 display and WiFi b/g/n together with Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (3.0 is optional). No word on pricing at this stage.

Both Windows 7 (1001PX-WHI006S) and Windows XP (1001PX-BLK003X) models will be available. The former has a 250GB hard-drive and a 6-cell battery which ASUS reckon is good for up to 9hrs runtime, while the later gets a smaller 160GB hard-drive and a 3-cell battery for up to 5hrs use.

Both have three USB 2.0 ports, VGA and 10/100 ethernet, along with WiFi b/g, a memory card reader and 0.3-megapixel webcam. Dimensions are 262 x 178 x 25.9-36.5 mm and the whole thing weighs around 1kg. The Windows XP model is expected to run to around €241 ($326) while the Eee PC 1001PX running Windows 7 Home Edition shouldn’t be more than €300 ($406) when they arrive in Italy imminently.

A new Lenovo netbook has apparently been spotted in Australian schools, seemingly based on the company’s ThinkPad X100e but with a smaller display. The Lenovo ThinkPad Mini 10 – as it’s said to be labeled – has the same chassis and keyboard of the X100e, but fits in a 10-inch display rather than its sibling’s 11.6-inch panel.

According to the tipster, the “Mini 10″ logo was positioned where the ThinkPad numbers are usually to be found, and the netbook uses Intel Pine Trail components rather than the AMD processor and chipset in the X100e. The Mini 10 is believed to use Intel’s Atom N450 processor and GMA 3150 graphics.

The smaller display is likely a move to keep prices down, certainly something of interest the educational authorities believed to be rolling the netbook out in certain Australian schools. A Lenovo ThinkPad Mini 11 has also been rumored previously, which we’re guessing includes Pine Trail processors but with the original X100e’s display.

Sony’s upcoming netbook refresh, the Sony VAIO M, has broken cover, and we have to say it looks a little less interesting than the company’s previous netbooks. Suspected to replace the VAIO W range, the VAIO M packs Intel’s new Atom N450 1.66GHz processor along with 1GB of DDR2 memory, a 250GB 5,400rpm HDD and Intel GMA 3150 graphics.

There’s also a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 LED-backlit display, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, along with a webcam. The whole thing is expected to tip the scales at 1.3kg, and has the usual range of VGA, ethernet, USB, audio in/out and memory card reader ports.

Frankly the chunky keyboard looks like a bit of a throwback to old-fashioned netbooks, and is a disappointing departure from Sony’s regular chicklet keys. According to UK listings the Sony VAIO M is expected to be priced at around £299 ($451) and available in black and white.

Out of all of the leaked ASUS netbooks we saw last week, the most interesting was the Eee PC 1018P. That’s now been officially announced at CeBIT 2010, and the Eee PC 1018P Prime looks even better in photos than it does in renders. Clad in brushed aluminum, bearing USB 3.0 ports and promising 10hrs of battery life, the 1018P Prime also gets Intel N455 and N475 processors.

That’s strange, because so far we’ve not officially heard of those particular CPU variants being officially announced. Intel debuted their Atom N470 chip over the weekend, and previous rumors suggested that the N455 and N475 versions would be updated to allow for the use of DDR3 memory.

Elsewhere there’s 1-2GB of RAM, a 250GB to 500GB hard-drive, 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 display and WiFi b/g/n together with Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. Bluetooth 3.0 is apparently optional. There’s also a fingerprint reader, some bundled online Eee Storage, and the whole thing measures just 18mm thick.

Remember Gigabyte’s new multitouch convertible netbook, the T1000, spotted on the company’s site over the weekend? Gigabyte have been showing it off properly at CeBIT 2010 this week, and several people have stopped by for a quick hands-on.

Video demo after the cut

NetbookItalia have a good all-round photoset of the T1000P, and they also spotted a SIM card reader lurking behind the battery. That certainly indicates that Gigabyte will be offering a 3G and/or 4G version of the tablet, something that wasn’t mentioned on the original spec sheet.

Meanwhile jkkmobile shot some hands-on video with the twisting convertible netbook, and he seems reasonably impressed. He reckons the multitouch is actually more responsive than the comparable ASUS machine (the Eee PC T101MT) though the functionality is actually limited by the Windows 7 Starter Edition OS. What’s left to be figured out is what sort of battery life can be stretched out from the 4-cell or 6-cell packs.

While we grabbed some hands-on time with Acer’s Aspire One 532g netbook at MWC 2010 last week, what we didn’t think to do was to sneakily attempt to benchmark it. Being the first netbook to pack NVIDIA’s second-gen Ion 2 GPU, the AO532g has many would-be buyers curious as to how it matches up to the first-gen Ion chipset; unfortunately, going by NetbookNews’ testing,

The AO532g scored 3,049 in 3DMark03, which actually puts it on a lower bar than some first-gen Ion machines. Ion LE netbooks – such as the Samsung N510 – have been clocked at 3,593, for instance, despite being based on the older platform.

Over at Netbook Choice they’re theorizing that the shortfall could be down to a bandwidth shortfall in the Intel NM10 chipset’s PCI Express lanes. The Pine Trail Atom N450 processor the Aspire One 532g uses takes advantage of the DMI bus to connect the CPU and the chipset, but NVIDIA lack licensing agreements to do the same. Of course, it could also be down to early drivers or something Acer themselves did to the netbook for display purposes; we’ll have to wait until the AO532g’s release to find out for sure.

Samsung originally announced that the NB30 would arrive in early January 2010, though they seem to have slightly missed that mark. There’s also been some talk of a touchscreen variant of the netbook, though that doesn’t appear to get a mention in the partial specs listed by each e-store.

The display itself is a 15.6-inch panel running at 1600 x 900 and with Intel GMA X3150 graphics. Connectivity includes WiFi b/g/n and gigabit ethernet, along with six USB 2.0 ports, a multiformat memory card reader and a 0.3-megapixel webcam.

Pricing and availability are yet to be confirmed, and we can’t spot a product page either, only a mention on the ASUS support site. That means no sign of official photos as yet, but we’re guessing the ET1610PT looks pretty similar to previous Eee Top models.

Running Windows 7, the X20 has a 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 LCD display, Intel 3150 GMA graphics and up to 2GB of RAM. There’s also a 1.3-megapixel webcam, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth and 3G HSDPA/HSUPA, and the FCC’s test model packed a 250GB hard-drive. The battery is a 4-cell unit, and the whole thing weighs 1.2kg.

Acer has a new rival in the highly-affordable netbook market in the form of the $309.99 MSI Wind U135 netbook, powered by Intel’s Pine Trail platform. Seen originally in December, this little thing speeds up the netbook race for cheap and fast by another welcomed step.

The Wind U135 Netbook comes in flavors of charcoal, silver, ruby, or sapphire, with a film-printed shiny coating and a new raised chiclet keyboard (we love that term). A larger-sized touchpad is also included, with 160GB or 250GB hard drive, and 1GB of RAM. Windows 7 Starter on a 10-inch screen (1024×600 resolution) is driven by a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N450, and mixed in are three USB ports and a 1.3 MP webcam. For those who’re looking to pick one up, purchase is available starting today at retailers and online.

MSI US Announces Availability of Wind U135 Special Edition Netbook Commemorating the Millions of Wind Units Sold Worldwide
Posted on: 26 January 2010

The U135 is the first Wind model to feature Intel’s Pine Trail Platform

CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA – January 26, 2010 – MSI Computer, a leading manufacturer of computer hardware products and solutions, is proud to announce the availability of the MSI Wind U135 netbook. These special edition netbooks commemorate the millions of Wind models sold globally and are the first to feature the powerful, yet efficient Intel Pine Trail Platform with the Atom™ N450 processor . Available in Silver, Charcoal, Ruby and Sapphire, the newest addition to the Wind family also features a 160GB or 250 GB hard drive, 1 GB of DDR2 memory and Windows 7 Starter and start at $309.99.

The U135′s new CPU and single chipset architecture combine to consume just 7 watts, increasing battery life by 15% and overall performance by as much as 10%. Consumers can choose between a 3-cell or 6-cell battery, with the later delivering a battery life of up to 7.5 hours.

The U135′s battery life also benefits from MSI’s exclusive MSI ECO Engine Technology and an efficient LED display. The ECO Engine technology allows users to choose from 5 power modes–Gaming, Movie, Presentation, Document and Turbo Battery–to customize the power supply based on usage requirements.

The U135 also features several design upgrades including a new raised chiclet keyboard and a color film printed case. The elevated keys are 20% larger, firm to the touch and improve typing accuracy and user comfort. The U135′s stylish color film printed case prevents smudging, giving the netbook a glossy finish. MSI also packed a 1.3M webcam, D-Sub port, 3 USB 2.0 ports and 4×1 card reader into the portable lightweight U135.

The new Wind U135 is available now at retailers such as Fry’s Electronics and Comp USA, and online at Amazon and Newegg for $309.99 – $329.99. MSI offers a 1-year limited warranty with the U135 and extended customer services hours at 1-888-447-6564.

Looking for a bright pink or bamboo notebook? ASUS have got your back either way, unveiling both a netbook collaboration with designer Karim Rashid and a U-Series notebook with real bamboo in the casing. The ASUS Eee PC 1008P Seashell Karim Rashid Collection is the more eye-catching of the pair, thanks to a diamond-textured (and vivid pink) shell that’s supposed to create the illusion of moving light, while the ASUS U Series Bamboo uses a plastic-injected bamboo material cladding Intel 32nm Arrandale CPUs and USB 3.0 connectivity.

Aside from the casing design – it’s also available in metallic brown – the Karim Rashid Eee PC 1008P mainly differs from its Seashell predecessors by virtue of the removable battery, Pine Trail processor, larger HDD and speedier WiFi. Intel’s Atom N450, 250GB and 802.11n are all onboard, together with gigabit ethernet and Bluetooth 2.1, while a nifty little VGA adapter dongle lurks underneath. The battery is only a 3-cell pack, and ASUS aren’t saying exactly how long it might last nor when you’ll be able to pick up the 1008P yourself.

As for the ASUS U-Series Bamboo, it sneaks in Intel’s latest Core i5 processors together with discrete graphics. ASUS reckon it makes as much sense to consider using renewable materials in the initial design as it does to plan out recyclability when the notebook is past its best, hence the bamboo. Again, no word on pricing, release date or full specifications. Live photos of both machines in the gallery below.

The Mini 5102 also packs up to 320GB of HDD storage or 128GB of SSD, along with optional EVDO/HSPA 3G WWAN. There’s also optional Bluetooth and a wide range of WiFi choices, from basic b/g through to a/b/g/n. Two displays are on offer, a regular 1024 x 600 and an HD-capable 1366 x 768.

Finally there are the HP Mini 210 and 2102 netbooks, targeted at consumers and professionals/education markets respectively, and getting Intel’s latest Pine Trail N450 processors along with a choice of regular or HD-spec 10.1-inch displays, 1GB of RAM and up to 320GB storage. Options include Bluetooth, GPS and 3G WWAN.

The HP TouchSmart tm2 will land in the US on Jan. 17 starting at $949, while the HP Mini 5102 will also drop sometime this month starting from $399. As for the HP Mini 210 and the Mini 2101, they’ll arrive tomorrow starting at $299 and $329 respectively.

Building on HP TouchSmart software innovation, the thin, powerful HP TouchSmart tm2 updates the tx2 – the industry’s first convertible notebook PC with multitouch technology designed specifically for consumers.
With the convertible tm2, customers can choose the product configuration and input method that is most comfortable and natural, whether on a couch, in an airplane or while surfing the web. (3) As a traditional notebook, the tm2 offers a keyboard and touch-enabled display for input. Converted to a slate, the tm2 morphs into a sketchpad with digital pen, allowing artists to sketch on the go and students to take notes in class.
Feather-light capacitive multitouch display technology responds to the softest touch of a finger. The display also supports multitouch gestures such as zoom, scroll and rotate by allowing more than one finger to be accepted as input simultaneously. With the digital pen, handwriting appears on the display as digital ink, similar to writing on paper.
Featuring a sophisticated aluminum design with “Riptide” engraved illustration, the tm2 provides a full notebook experience with the latest low- voltage Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo processors and optional high multimedia performance ATI Mobility RadeonTM discrete graphics upgrades.(4) The tm2 also provides up to nine hours of battery life via the standard six-cell battery and includes a fingerprint reader as well as an advanced thermal design
that helps keep the PC cool.(5)
New touch applications enhancing the tm2 experience include:
• BumpTop, a touch-enhanced 3-D interface for photos and documents that allows users to spatially organize and “toss” or share files and photos to social media sites or email.
• DigiFish Dolphin, an interactive 3-D screensaver that recreates an ocean environment to be experienced via touch or a mouse.
• Corel® Paint it! TouchTM, which allows users to draw and paint or turn photos into paintings using fingertips.
The tm2 also features many of the same exclusive built-for-touch applications found on the recently introduced tx2 and HP TouchSmart PC, including exclusive touch-enabled games and Corel Painter Sketch Pad application for creating digital art.
The tm2 now offers a touch-enabled Netflix application, which delivers thousands of full-screen movies and TV episodes that are instantly streamed from Netflix over the Internet and can be watched any time at no additional cost by Netflix members with an unlimited subscription. Other recently introduced applications within the TouchSmart software include Hulu Desktop or Internet TV, Twitter and HP Music Store.(6)
As part of HP’s commitment to the environment and to eliminating all uses of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in its computing products by 2011,(7) the TouchSmart tm2 is BFR/PVC-free.
HP Mini 5102
Starting at only 2.6 pounds, the HP Mini 5102 is a full-performance netbook designed for mobile professionals and students.(8) Available in either a standard or touch-enabled version, the HP Mini 5102 features a sturdy, lightweight anodized-aluminum display enclosure with a choice of black, red or blue brushed finishes.(9) It also features an optional handle, which makes it easy to carry.
The touchscreen option allows users to get work done more intuitively and quickly based on their choice of input methods. Multitouch gestures, finger taps and swipes across the screen allow users to navigate through applications and menus(9) as well as provide access to information and websites.(3)
The keyboard of the Mini 5102 produces a great typing experience for email, instant messaging and other text-driven applications.(3) The 95 percent of full-size QWERTY keyboard, plus a touchpad, compares favorably to smaller keyboards of competing companion PCs.
Logging on to Windows and other websites is fast and easy with HP Face Recognition for Protect tools. Users simply face the 2-megapixel webcam of the HP Mini 5102 to log in.
The HP Mini 5102 also features the latest Intel® AtomTM N450 processor,(10) multiple connectivity options including mobile broadband,(2) and a large 10.1-inch diagonal LED display available in either WSVGA or HD(1) resolutions. When equipped with the optional Broadcom HD video decoder technology, the HP Mini 5102 can play back high-resolution 720- and
1,080-pixel HD video content.(1,3)
Customers can choose either a four-cell battery for lighter weight or six-cell battery for longer battery life. When configured with the optional six-cell battery, the HP Mini 5102 delivers up to 10 hours of battery runtime.(5)
HP also is offering the HP Mini 5102 in a HP Student Edition, designed to help students learn and to provide IT administrators a reliable, scalable and affordable IT environment. The Student Edition brings leading software to students, including Adobe® Digital School Collection, which provides document management and portfolio creation tools for enhancing learning experiences in language arts, history, music and the sciences. The HP Student Edition also can be configured with an optional handle and is available in black, red or blue for a customized student experience.
HP Student Edition backpacks are designed with students in mind. A durable suspended notebook compartment helps protect the HP Mini or HP Student Edition Notebook from bumps and scratches. Convenient features – such as a thermal compartment for lunches and snacks, a roomy book compartment, quick-access compartments for phones and personal media, and extra padding in the shoulder straps and back – keep students prepared and comfortable.
HP Mini 210 / HP Mini 2102
The HP Mini 210 and HP Mini 2102 are ideal companion PCs for the consumer, business traveler or student, providing freedom and fun with more than nine hours of battery life plus optional 3G broadband connectivity and GPS in a slim and stylish design in multiple color options.(5)(2)
Starting at 2.69 pounds(8) and measuring less than 1-inch thin, the HP Mini 210 is available in a choice of stylish Black Crystal, Silver Crystal, Pacific Blue or Sonoma Red HP Imprint finishes. The HP Mini 2102 offers users a sophisticated black design, which is also available for the Mini 210.
With a 10.1-inch diagonal standard or optional Brightview Infinity HD LED widescreen display and an island-style keyboard that is 92 percent the size of a standard notebook PC keyboard, the new HP Mini 210 and HP Mini 2102 are designed for consumers and business professionals who surf the web, check email, listen to music and need access to people or information while on the go.(3) The PCs also have a built-in WLAN, webcam and microphone.
New software enhances the HP Mini 210 PC’s multimedia experience and makes it even easier to access offline content and update files on the go, anytime and anywhere:
• HP CloudDrive powered by ZumoDrive allows users to access their synchronized content – documents, photos and music – from the cloud, without having to store it on a local drive.
• HP MediaStream allows users to stream multimedia content from one PC to another over the Internet, without requiring data to be downloaded.(3)
• HP QuickSync software, also available on the HP Mini 2102, automatically synchronizes files created or edited on the road with a home or business PC over a wireless connection when connected to the same network.(3)
4/6
• HP QuickWeb allows users to access the web without booting up the notebook by simply pushing a button. In seconds, users have a connection to the Internet and can access websites and other content that normally requires a standard browser, as well as photos, music and more.(11)
In addition to viewing HD content on the Internet, users can experience their own personal multiplex via an optional Broadcom Crystal HD Enhanced Video Accelerator, which allows users to enjoy 1,080-pixel HD content.(5)(6)
The optional GPS software provides a seamless experience for use both inside and out. It includes the HP Navigator mapping application.
The HP Mini 210 and HP Mini 2102 support up to 1 gigabyte (GB) of memory and large hard drive options up to 320 GB,(12) offering plenty of space to store movies, music, applications and files. A convenient, built-in VGA port allows users to connect to an external monitor, while a five-in-one digital media slot allows users to transfer files easily from various memory formats.
Powered by an Intel® AtomTM processor N450 with 1.66 GHz, the HP Mini 210 and 2102 offer configure-to-order options on a number of features.(10)
With the broad HP Mini portfolio, including the previously introduced Mini 110 and Mini 5101, customers have a choice of sleek companion PCs that let them stay connected from virtually anywhere. HP Mini PCs are geared toward information “snacking” and content access, versus the rich content- creation capabilities found in fully functional HP notebook and desktop PCs.(2)
Accessories, pricing and availability(13)
The HP USB Media Dock combines the capabilities of a docking station, port replicator and adjustable notebook stand. It reduces desktop clutter while providing versatile docking and high-quality audio and video features. Priced at $199 for the port replicator, stand and speakers, the Media Dock offers USB connectivity, making it compatible with any notebook.
The new HP Mini W40 Vehicle Power Adapter plugs into the lighter receptacle of any car, truck or RV, enabling users to charge the battery of their HP Mini while on the road. Engineered for extreme mobility, the Aspire One utilizes the energy-efficient Intel® Atom™ N450 processor, integrated Intel graphics and the mobile Intel NM10 Express chipset to keep users connected while on-the-go.

To further support power savings and longer battery life, the netbooks’ 10.1-inch LED-backlit TFT LCD saves 22.2 percent power compared with other netbook displays(4).

The new Aspire One netbook line offers many configurations to fit a wide range of consumer needs. For further communications needs, the netbooks are equipped with a built-in webcam, delivering smooth video streaming and high quality images for online chats and video conferences.

The arrival of Pine Trail looks to have re-energized ASUS into their old, netbook churning ways, with another 10.1-inch machine using the Atom N450 processor. Available for preorder from Amazon Germany, the ASUS Eee PC 1001P keeps the Seashell styling of its predecessors, and aside from the CPU change things are pretty much on a par with last-gen netbooks.

That means you get a 160GB hard-drive, 1GB of RAM and Windows XP, with the whole thing weighing 1.1kg and measuring in at 225 x 165 x 21 mm. The battery is a slim-fitting 4,400mAh pack which ASUS reckon you’ll see up to 11hrs of runtime from. Connectivity includes WiFi b/g, three USB 2.0 ports and a memory card reader, along with audio in/out.

Curiously, the product description lists TV out/in as features, but the photos available of the 1001P don’t appear to show anything along those lines. Amazon Germany say the Eee PC 1001P will begin shipping on January 6th 2010, priced at €267.70 ($384) and available in both black and white.

NVIDIA haven’t held back recently with their Ion 2 news, but it’s good to see the company reconfirming their plans to launch a Pine Trail-compatible version of the graphics chipset and attach a date to its roll-out. As we heard before, the new Ion 2 for Intel Pine Trail will be a standalone GPU rather than the combined Northbridge/GPU chipset as offered for the current Intel Atom models, and it’s arriving in Q1 2010.

Considering Pine Trail chips are already showing up in new netbooks, and Intel have officially announced them, we’re expecting NVIDIA to push the new Ion 2 GPUs out earlier in the next quarter than later. As before, NVIDIA are promising full-screen HD and 1080p Blu-ray support from their graphics processor, together with the power to play mainstream games on netbook hardware.

Official images and full specifications of the upcoming ASUS Eee PC 1005P Pine Trail netbook have emerged, after details of the netbook – and its 1005PE sibling – leaked yesterday. Appearance-wise, ASUS have stuck to their Seashell theme, so it seems the main changes are inside with the Atom N450 1.66GHz processor.

As we knew from yesterday, the 1005P and 1005PE have a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 display, 1GB of RAM GMA 3150 graphics and 160GB or 250GB of storage respectively. There’s also WiFi b/g (no ‘n’ though) and a 6-cell Li-Ion battery in both machines; however, the 1005PE’s battery is tipped to be larger than that of the 1005P, making it good for up to 12 hours runtime.

It’s unclear what sort of battery life we can expect from the 1005P, however. The ASUS Eee PC 1005P is currently listing on UK site LambdaTek for £242.95 tax included ($395), while the ASUS Eee PC 1005PE is listed at the same site for £270.34 ($439).

Both the 1005P and the 1005PE have 1GB of RAM, a 3-cell battery and three USB 2.0 ports, together with a webcam and a copy of Windows 7 Starter. Where they differ is in their hard-drive and wireless connectivity: the 1005P has a 160GB drive, while the 1005PE upgrades that to 250GB and throws Bluetooth into the mixture too.

NVIDIA have officially confirmed that the next-gen “Ion 2” (not the final name) graphics chipset is in the works, but it won’t be arriving quite as soon as many had hoped. The company told Fudzilla that the Ion 2 won’t see an official launch until later in Q1 2010, as opposed to the Q4 2009 unveil we’d expected; that’s apparently because hardware manufacturers want to milk a few more sales out of first-gen Ion devices before the new chip arrives.

There will, however, be Ion 2 based devices on show at CES 2010, only it doesn’t sound like they’ll be found on the NVIDIA stand. Fudzilla also tips that the number of shaders in the next-gen chip could actually be more than the original “double that of Ion” number; some sources have suggested as many as 40 (compared to the original’s 16).

Ion 2 should arrive alongside Intel’s next-gen Pinetrail processors, since the current-gen Ion won’t work with the new Pinetrail-M netbook and Pinetrail-D nettop chips. That’s because Intel’s new Atom processors bring the Northbridge onto the CPU die, and currently NVIDIA don’t have a version of the Ion chipset that omits the Northbridge.

Squint and you can just make out Acer’s upcoming Pine Trail netbook in the company’s driver pages, the Acer Aspire One 532, packing an Intel Atom N450 processor and a variety of SKUs. As well as the newer processor – which we’re expecting Intel to officially announce in January 2010 – the netbook also offers a choice of display resolutions, including the common 1024 x 600 and the far preferable 1280 x 720.

Graphics are courtesy of Intel’s GMA 3150 chipset and there are models with either 160GB or 250GB of storage; RAM seems pretty consistent at a measly 1GB. Otherwise it’s the usual array of mundane netbook specs: three USB 2.0 ports, 10/100 ethernet, VGA and audio in/out, together with a multiformat memory card reader, standard WiFi and optional Bluetooth.

Color choices will be blue, red, black and silver, and the AO532 is already being listed at some European merchants for around €299. Acer are apparently preparing to launch their new Pine Trail range on January 11th, so we’re guessing we’ll see more information then.

Since Pine Trail moves the Northbridge functions onto the CPU (as opposed to the Atom N270, which had a separate Northbridge), Ion 2 will be more like a standalone GPU than the original chipset design. The GPU is expected to support a greater number of shaders, be smaller its predecessor, and more power efficient; NVIDIA have declined to comment on the Acer rumors.

Further hardware details regarding Intel’s imminent Pine Trail platform have emerged, suggesting that the next-gen Atom chips will be smaller, more efficient and cheaper for the company to produce than the existing processors. Set to debut in Q1 2010, according to Fudzilla the Pine Trail-M mobile chips will deliver a roughly 20-percent reduction in power consumption, when compared with the current Atom CPUs (measured in Mobile Mark 05).

The Pine Trail-M processors will also have a 64-percent smaller footprint, thanks to the shift from three separate chips on-die (CPU, Northbridge and Southbridge) to just two (CPU and Southbridge) and new manufacturing processes. A four-layer PCB is used, which also helps to lower manufacturing costs. Fudzilla are predicting that netbooks using Pine Trail-M chips will be roughly the same price as existing-gen models, rather than cheaper, with the lower production costs offsetting the higher specifications.

That DDR3 compatibility is particularly interesting, as it will put Atom’s RAM support on a par with what Intel’s Core i7 – Bloomfield processors can utilize. However Intel will limit supported memory to single-channel sticks, though you’ll at least be able to use two DIMMs; that, say Fuzdilla, is confirmed for the nettop platform, but it’s likely to be the same situation for netbooks.

Pine Trail processors are expected to ship in early 2010 – with some sources saying as early as January – with the Atom N450 and N470 processors on sale throughout next year and into 2011. No specific release details for Cedar Trail processors are known.

It’s no ThinkPad netbook, but Lenovo’s latest IdeaPad ultraportable – as helpfully previewed by our camera-fumbling friends at the FCC – does at least have an unusual CPU to maintain our interest. The FL5-B3 – which we’re guessing is not going to be the netbook’s final name – uses a 1.66GHz Intel Pineview processor, presumably the Atom N450, paired with 2GB of RAM and a 250GB hard-drive. While they’re still minimal specs in the notebook world, after what seems like a lifetime of half that memory and a meager 160GB of storage they’re very welcome.

Otherwise there’s a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 display, with the hard-drive being a 5,400rpm Seagate unit and the RAM a single 2GB DDR2 Samsung chip. The design is pretty much in line with previous IdeaPads, though the FCC’s photos show that the glossy piano black case is going to be perfect for saving your fingerprints.

One curious tweak is the seeming absence of trackpad buttons, which suggests some sort of integrated clicking. Response to that has been mixed: some implementations work well, such as Apple’s MacBooks, but Windows notebook attempts to mimic it have been less impressive. Since Intel are sticking by their January 2010 launch window, this particular Lenovo IdeaPad isn’t likely to show up until early in the new year.

The first examples of Nokia’s Booklet 3G netbook are yet to drop into buyers’ hands, but according to leaks fizzing out of Taiwan the Finns are already discussing orders for their second-gen model. Notorious rumor-monger Economic Daily News has suggested that a new Booklet 3G with updated specifications is expected to be released in 2010, a statement that is, frankly, stating the obvious. However, reading between the lines we’d expect any updated netbook from Nokia to take advantage of Intel’s upcoming Pine Trail processors, such as the Atom N450, and we do know a little about that CPU’s release schedule.

Those processors are expected to drop on January 3rd 2010, according to the latest batch of rumors, which might suggest that the Booklet 3G refresh could take place early in Q1 next year. The N450 couples the CPU and GPU, together with the memory controller, onto the same die, and offers a performance increase and a TDP drop over the current generation of N-series chips.

The existing Booklet 3G uses Intel’s Z530 1.6GHz processor, picked because it’s more efficient than the N270 and allows for longer battery life despite the surfeit of wireless connectivity (the netbook has WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and GPS). The EDN tip Compal as leading the pack for manufacturing rights to the next-gen Booklet; the company already produce the existing model.

Last we heard, the rumor-pipes were whistling that Intel planned to officially out their Atom N450 processor in Q1 2010. Now, Fudzilla are reporting that the actual launch date for the 1.66GHz chip will be January 3rd, and in fact be a significant day on the Intel calendar for several new chipset arrivals.

Fudzilla also claim – though it’s unclear who their sources are – that the first commercial product launches of devices based on the Atom N450 will happen on (or shortly after) announcement day. Previous rumors have suggested that several manufacturers are keen to get Pine Trail based products onto the market, with Intel’s Atom N270-centric current platform being seen as less impressive in contrast to recent rival launches.

The Atom N450 will apparently be priced at $64 at launch (in bulk quantities), making it around $20 more expensive per-chip than the N270. However, the N450 packages the graphics and memory controllers onto the same die as the CPU, reducing parts, bulk, power consumption and manufacturing processes.

According to those sources, the Eee PC T101H will have a 10.2-inch resistive touchscreen running at 1024 x 600, 1GB of RAM (2GB optional), a 16GB SSD, WiFi b/g/n, GPS, 3G UMTS and DVB-T digital TV (we’re thinking some of those will likely be options). There’ll also be a motion sensor, likely used for screen rotation, plus a battery good for up to 8hrs runtime.

The whole thing is said to be around 1.3kg in weight, and will run Windows 7. As for pricing, that’s tipped at between €650 and €700 ($968 – $1,042), which makes it a particularly expensive netbook when you consider many manufacturers are now looking to put multitouch-capable capacitive displays in their newest Windows 7 ultraportable notebooks.

Intel’s Pine Trail Atom refresh wasn’t predicted to see any products actually arrive on shelves until Q1 2010, but that wasn’t counting on the motivation of Shanzai producers in China. The first all-in-one nettop using the 1.66GHz dual-core Intel Atom D510 processor has emerged, the KND K1850, with an 18.6-inch display, 2GB of RAM, 250GB hard-drive and a DVD drive.

Pine Trail moves the Pineview CPU and both the memory and graphics controllers onto a single chipset, to be accompanied by a separate I/O controller called Tiger Point. That, Intel claim, means power requirements are reduced, speed is increased and heat output drops; admittedly, those factors might be more useful in a netbook, where you could squeeze out more runtime from a battery or even go fanless.

Netbooks, though, will get the Atom N450, the mobile version of the D510. It’s unlikely that the KND K1850 – which also has WiFi, ethernet, several USB ports and a multiformat card reader – will make it to the US or Europe, but this is just the first of what’s likely to be a huge stream of models all with very similar specifications.

After ongoing rumors and speculation that Intel would miss their Q4 launch for Pine Trail, their next-gen Atom processor line-up, the company has again confirmed that the low-power netbook processors are on course to hit manufacturers in Q4 2009. However the company will not be drawn on how long those chips will then take to show up in commercially-available devices: estimates suggest that Pine Trail based netbooks won’t actually be on shelves until Q1 2010 at the earliest.

Pine Trail brings the memory controller and graphics controller onto the main processor chipset, which the company claim will reduce power requirements as well as increase speed. MSI are tipped to be planning an early launch, rushing a Windows 7 based Pine Trail Wind-series netbook to market in December 2009.

The N470 will have a 6.5W TDP – twice what the N270 demands – though that’s partially explained by its incorporating the 200MHz IGP. The memory controller – running at 667MHz with DDR2 support – is also onboard, and the N470 will support hyperthreading.

Of course, Intel are too busy claiming that the N450 is still on course to arrive in late 2009, and at least one manufacturer has expressed their intent to use the Pine Trail chips in a netbook for release this coming December. This may be one of those situations where we can’t call it until 00:01 on January 1st.

MSI have confirmed previous leaks that they are developing a convertible touchscreen netbook that will run Windows 7 on Intel’s upcoming Pine Trail chipset. The MSI Wind U150 will take on ASUS’ Eee PC T91; however there’s some confusion as to when it might arrive. MSI have tipped Pine Trail’s official debut as taking place at CES 2010, while Intel maintain that the new Atom processors are on course for a late-2009 release.

Before then, however, MSI will release the Wind U210, a version of the U200 but using AMD’s Yukon platform rather than Intel’s Atom. Tipped by the company to arrive in the first weeks of September, the Wind U210 will be offered in two different forms, the first priced at $379 with Windows XP, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive, and the second for $429 with Vista Premium.

Unfortunately Windows 7′s multitouch functionality may be wasted on the U150, as it apparently has a resistive rather than capacitive touchscreen. That’s likely a decision based on price, but MSI have not revealed exactly what sort of tag the new netbook might demand.

It seems like ages since we last had a good Intel Pine Trail rumor, so here’s one with not only a company name but a date to go with it. According to DigiTimes’ ever-clandestine “industry sources” MSI has decided to be the first OEM to launch a Pine Trail-M netbook, with December 2009 their settled window.

That’s a little odd, since other insiders that DigiTimes have talked to previously have tipped Pine Trail-M as being delayed from October 2009 to some point in Q1 2010. Still, it does at least tally with Intel’s own protestations that the platform – which will see the graphics core and memory controller moved into the processor chipset – is still on course for a 2009 arrival.

MSI’s intention, it’s claimed, is to avoid having to compete with its rivals over pricing, instead focusing on the touchscreen and Windows 7 functionality that its Pine Trail-M netbooks are expected to offer. Hot on its heals will be ASUS and Acer.

Talk, says Mooley Eden, of Intel’s Pine Trail being delayed into early 2010 is quite unfounded. According to the latest from Intel’s Mobile Platform Group general manager, “Pine Trail is on schedule. You can quote me on that … The three chip solution down to two chip solution [is] coming this year.”

Pine Trail – and the Intel Atom N450 processor expected to be the first commercial chip built on the new platform – integrates the memory controller and graphics chipsets into the processor, and pairs them with a new Tiger Point I/O controller. According to Intel, that shift from three down to two chips will mean Pine Trail is faster, cheaper and more energy-frugal than the current netbook platform.

However, speculation had begun that Intel intended to delay the launch of Pine Trail until early 2010, so as to shift final stocks of the current processors and allow vendors to clear their netbook inventory. ASUS and Acer were then tipped to be freezing netbook development throughout the rest of 2009 until the N450′s launch.

It’s also suggested that Acer’s research has indicated that market demand for the dual-OS netbook is not yet strong enough. Meanwhile ASUS’ Android netbook isn’t predicted to launch before the end of October, while its T101 10-inch convertible touchscreen netbook is on hold until after Microsoft release Windows 7.

Both companies, according to industry sources, are instead planning on focusing their attentions on the ultra-thin notebook segment, such as those using Intel’s CULV range of processors. ASUS are tipped to have 12-, 13.3- and 15-inch models ready, with 12- and 14-inch models following in August, while Acer already sells 13.3-, 14.1- and 15.6-inch models with further options – including integrated optical drives and discrete graphics – dependent on market demand.

Separately, Acer and ASUS are among several nettop manufacturers who are believed to be pushing to clear their existing inventories with further price cuts. Along with MSI and Synnex Technology International, they’re clearing the way for Intel’s upcoming Pine Trail-D nettop processors, also expected to launch in Q1 2010. ASUS will launch an NVIDIA Ion equipped nettop in October 2009, together with the Eee Box 1006.

The Core i9 CPUs will be based on the Westmere platform, though no details regarding clock speeds or other specifications are currently known. However two of Intel’s entry-level Core i3 processors have been tipped, running at 2.93GHz and 3.06GHz and priced at $123 and $143 in thousand-unit quantities.

The Core i3 chips will also be a Q1 2010 arrival. As for the nettop Pine Trail-D platform, that couples an Atom D410 (single-core) or Atom D510 (dual-core) processor with Intel’s NM10 chipset. Earlier this week details of Intel’s Core i5 range were leaked, with the mid-range chips expected to arrive in September this year.

Intel’s Pine Trail platform, set to replace the company’s current Diamondville netbook/nettop architecture, could be delayed until the first half of 2010 so as to reassure vendors. According to Digitimes Research senior analyst Joanne Chien, the Intel Atom N450 processor has been pushed back from its original Q4 2009 launch schedule so as to allow the existing netbook market to settle.

Chien’s figures predict that worldwide netbook shipments will peak in Q3 this year, at 8.347m units, before dropping slightly in Q4 to 8,194m units. However that’s up from Q2 2009, at 7,296m units. Major PC vendors are yet to announce systems running the new 45nm Pine Trail chipset, potentially to allow them to clear existing stock and squeeze out profitability of the cheaper N270/N280 processors before moving to the N450.

Pine Trail integrates the graphics core into the processor, together with the memory controller, and introduces a new Tiger Point chipset with I/O including SATA, USB 2.0, PCI Express and Intel HD Audio. It also promises reduced power requirements, which will either mean longer runtimes with the same performance as existing Atom systems, or more performance with no loss in runtimes.
