It's time again to talk about touchscreens on every surface imaginable, this time through Microsoft Research and Carnegie Mellon University. These groups have brought forth a solution for the age-old first-world problem of how a person who wants dial their phone using only the surface of their hand might do so. The solution is this: OmniTouch, a system that although currently requires the user to wear an obtrusive shoulder-mounted monstrosity to project and collect interfaces and the ways they interact with them, will sometime be as simple as a box of playing-cards-sized device which will work with the user to turn any surface into a touchscreen. His homegrown spherical display uses a Microvision ShowWX pico-projector, an 8-inch frosted glass light fitting, a fish-eye lens and some open-source software he's coded up specially, and costs around $200 to put together. Pacifica Media Partners reports that pico projector sales doubled in Q4 2010

Pacific Media Partners has announced the numbers for the pico projector market for Q4 2010. The numbers look pretty good for the small projectors with the shipments of the little devices doubling compared to Q4 2009. PMA's numbers show that in Q5 2009 there were 134,000 units shipped. Himax unveils world’s first USB 3.0 pico-projector

Himax has announced that it has the world's first USB 3.0 pico-projector (PDF) solution. Sadly, Himax offered no official pics of the thing for us to check out. The new projector has a resolution of 800 x 600 and uses a LCOS microdisplay from Himax Display. The projector gets all the power it needs directly from the USB port of a computer.
