It’s the middle of the week already, but we’re studiously counting down the days until the end of the month. There are going to be quite a few exciting things in August, and we’re hoping for even a couple surprises, so you’ll have to forgive our foresight. But, let’s try to stay focused on the present, at least for a little while longer. Welcome to the Wednesday night edition of The Daily Slash. Tonight, in the Best or R3 Media, we’ve got Android 2.1 on a bevy of devices, more iPhone rumors, and absolutely no cellphones for prisoners. And then in the Dredge ‘Net, we’re getting better gesture control soon, Microsoft comes clean on Kinect and hardcore gamers.

The Best of R3 Media

Android 2.1 on More Than Half of All Android Devices: It seems like only yesterday that everyone was clamoring for Android 2.0, and then even sooner that they all called out for immediate access to Android 2.1. But all of that yelling is in the past, as it turns out that 2.1 is now fully present on more than 50% of Android-based handsets. Actually, it accounts for 55.5%. Pretty good numbers, even if there are still 18.9% of owners out there running Android 1.5. Still, at 3.3%, Android 2.2 is making a claim for fame, and it’s only going to get more prevalent soon. [via Android Community]

iPhone Making its Way to T-Mobile: Yes, that says iPhone, and not iPhone 4. And yes, that’s for a reason. Why? Because no one thinks that the iPhone 4, in the incarnation that we see it now (antenna issues and all) is going to make an appearance anywhere else other than AT&T’s network. Nope, it’s going to be an iPhone, sure, but it won’t be the same thing. A new rumor suggests that T-Mobile, the fourth largest wireless carrier in the United States, is actually almost finished with their talks with Apple, pretty much clinching the final necessities needed to get their hands on the coveted device. The rumor also suggests that it will come out some time in the third quarter of this year, which ends in September. So, it should be pretty much any day now that we hear some kind of official verbiage on this issue if it’s actually true. [via SlashGear]

House of Representatives Completely Blocks Prisoners from Mobile Phones: Right now, prisoners aren’t allowed to have mobile phones. But, for the most part, it’s just a written rule that bears no real consequences if they are found with one. But, thanks to the US House of Repesentatives, S. 1749 has just been passed, and that means the original bill approved by the Senate back in April is one step closer to getting signed by the President, and then enacted as a law. Which means any prisoner caught with a mobile phone, or any device capable of accessing outside communications or the mobile web, will be served with a punishment. Now, what’s next? State governments are currently petitioning to get cellphone signals jammed at prisons around the country. We’ll see how that goes. [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

Gesture Control Without Gloves, Multiple Hands: So, technology keeps advancing, and we’re riding the train towards the future in our big comfortable chairs. One of the stops on the tour would have to be Fraunhofer Technical Institute in Germany, where scientists there have created a new, advanced gesture control system that doesn’t need any gloves, but can fully recognize multiple hands at the same time. The system actually has the ability to track not just your hands, but also your individual fingers. Unfortunately, the scientists have no idea when this technology will be ready for the mainstream, but we’re hoping it’s tomorrow. No, seriously. [via DVICE]

Microsoft: Hardcore Gamers Will Enjoy Kinect, Too: So, when you look at Kinect, and see all those great games it’s launching for, there might be some of you out there wondering where, exactly, the hardcore games are. Like, your next favorite First Person Shooter, or the next great action-adventure title. You won’t see them, at least not right now. But, don’t freak out. Microsoft has your back. The Redmond-based company says that hardcore games, like Halo-esque titles are coming down the pipe, but they just won’t be the focus right off the bat. No, they may take up to 18 months to show up onto the scene. Right now, those are being kept to the controller, but will make their way to Kinect sooner than later. So, you can start breathing again. [via CrunchGear]

Is it Monday already? Wait, that can’t be how that saying goes. Anyway, welcome to tonight’s edition of The Daily Slash, we’re glad to have you. Tonight, in the Best of R3 Media, we’ve got Samsung pulling the Android 1.6 update from the Behold II, Netflix is heading North, and Sharp wants you to love the Sidekick. And then in the Dredge ‘Net, we’ve got a release date for Rock Band 3. So, sit tight, and get to reading, because there’s no time like the present.

The Best of R3 Media

T-Mobile Pulls Android 1.6 Update for Behold II: Well, this is very, verycurious. Truth be told, there were a lot of folks out there that weren’t very pleased with Samsung telling them that their device, as good as it was, wasn’t good enough for that prodigal update to Android 2.x. So, instead, they decided to give them Android 1.6, which would at least give them access to a lot more Google-based features. So, that went out all well and good — but apparently there were some problems fused with the update, because now T-Mobile has pulled it, saying that a signal issue present in the update was forcing them to pull the update. It’s only bad when you realize that T-Mobile, nor Samsung, are saying when the new update will be released. So, keep on waiting if you haven’t received it yet — it may be awhile. Or tomorrow. [via Android Community]

Netflix is Goin’ to Canada, eh? This is seriously some pretty exciting news for Canadians. After all, it’s Netflix! And, you get to watch an awesome screensaver on your huge TV while you wait! Awesome, right? Well, it’s no joke. Netflix has officially announced that beginning this Fall, the company will be bringing streaming movies and streaming TV shows to their TVs. As far as we can tell, it’ll work on everything that runs Netflix ’round these parts, but there’s no word on pricing quite yet. [via SlashGear]

Sharp FX Brings Sidekick Goodness Without the Sidekick: Today, the Sharp FX was announced. It’s set to launch on July 25th, and it’s going to cost $100 after a mail-in rebate and after you sign over your life for two years. What’s great about it, is the fact that it’s a messaging heavy device, with design inspiration ripped right from the Sidekick line of yesteryear. Oh, but that’s okay, because it’s Sharp, and that was their thing back in the day. It gets strange when you realize that it was actually manufactured by PCD, and they manufactured the Quickfire, too. Which, ironically enough, was a rip-off of the Sidekick, too. But, we won’t get into that. If you like messaging devices, then this full QWERTY keyboard device is probably perfect for you. Oh, and you have to be on AT&T, too. That’s important. [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

Rock Band 3 Launching October 26: This one’s a quick one. Rock Band 3 is launching, officially, on October 26th. Are you excited yet? Did you forget that you get to play on a keyboard? If you did, here’s your friendly reminder: you get to play with a keyboard. And yes, there’s a pro mode, so you’ll actually get to learn how to use it, too. The same goes for the other instruments, too, but that’s not exciting. So, yeah, October 26th. [via Joystiq]

Can you believe that it’s already (pretty much) the middle of July? It just feels like time’s flying by, doesn’t it? Guess that’s what happens when you’re having fun — and we have plenty of that around here. That’s why we’re happy you can join us. So, welcome to tonight’s edition of The Daily Slash. First up, in the Best of R3 Media, we’ve got 100,000 apps for the Android Market, and is an iPhone 4 recall coming soon? And then in the Dredge ‘Net, it looks like Stanford is going digital, we’ve got some big speakers, and it looks like Destination Arcade is just a limited run.

The Best of R3 Media

100,000 Apps in Android Market by End of July: As of right now, the Android Market is somewhere in the ballpark of 95,000 apps, apparently. Pretty impressive numbers (even if you consider the competition). But, that’s just about to be shunned with a nice little milestone, which is apparently going to be reached by the end of this month. 100,000. Thanks to AndroLib, we can see that over the course of the last few months, Android’s been rolling in about 14,000 every month, so reaching that milestone won’t be all that hard, hopefully. [via Android Community]

PR Experts Say iPhone 4 Recall Inevitable: So, the iPhone 4 has a problem with its reception. Some say it’s software related. Others, the majority voice if you will, say that it has more to do with the faulty way the antenna works. PR Experts believe the latter, saying that it’s a hardware fault, and that a recall not only needs to take place, but that it’s actually inevitable. There’s no word from Apple, of course, but hopefully that happens sooner than later. [via SlashGear]

The Dredge ‘Net

Stanford Engineering Library About to go Digital: So, Stanford’s legendary Engineering Library, with a collection of 80,000 or more books, is going to finally say good-bye to the physical copies and enter into the digital realm. According to some research done through the library, it looks like there is a vast majority of books in the library that haven’t been checked out in almost five years. That’s almost ridiculous. So, Stanford is planning on opening a new library, with only 10,000 or so books inside, but with all of the others transferred to a safe digital hard drive somewhere, where students can access it from wherever they want. Pretty good stuff to hear, for those who love technology, but it’s still (kind of) sad to see the ways of the old disappearing right before our eyes. [via Hot Hardware]

Arcadian Audio Pnoe Speakers are 100-Watts of Ridiculousness: We had to make the Slash’s picture tonight these speakers. Yes, those are speakers. And yes, they look like giant horns. Massive, even. According to the manufacturer, there’s actually a reason they look like that: it apparently “creates the smoothest, roundest path for the sound wave front, without any obstructions, so that there are no sources of standing waves and spurious reflections.” We’ll just have to take their word for it, because we can’t help but think that these speakers are going to be ridiculously expensive, to match that ridiculous amount of size. [via DVICE]

Destination Arcade? Just for the Summer, Thank You Very Much: Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade is a big showcase of Arcade titles. And, apparently this year, it’s also going to put something else in the limelight. Microsoft’s new Destination Arcade, which is a new recommendation engine and browsing interface, and basically makes the Arcade and its seemingly endless amount of games actually fun to find. But, apparently Microsoft doesn’t want us to actually enjoy it for any real amount of time, as they’ve now clarified that the new UI is only going to be for the Summer, before it will get pulled, and we’ll have to go back to the Dark Ages. That makes us sad. [via Joystiq]

Welcome to tonight’s edition of The Daily Slash. In the Best of R3 Media, we’ve got a new release date for the Vibrant, Apple may have used their kill switch, and Opera Mini’s been updated. And then in the Dredge ‘Net, a solar plane flies 26 hours, AQUA2 is another aquatic robot, and a foldable bike exists.

The Best of R3 Media

Samsung Vibrant Releasing July 15th: We can chalk this one up to pretty strange. After officially announcing the Samsung Vibrant, T-Mobile confirmed that the device would be hitting physical and digital store shelves beginning July 21st. But, thanks to some leaked T-Mobile documents, it’s now been more or less confirmed that it’s actually releasing on July 15th. A full week early, and on the same day as the Droid X by Motorola for Verizon. Interesting choice, especially considering they are still cutting it dangerously close to that date, and still haven’t told anyone. Tricky, tricky, T-Mobile. [via Android Community]

Apple Activates Their Kill Switch: The application in question is called NDrive, and it’s a GPS app created from a small group of folks. Basically, it’s an indie app, lost amidst the other high profile GPS applications out there in Apple’s App Store. At least, that was the case until today, when the application suddenly disappeared from the App Store, and people’s computers as well. Oh, and from iPhone owner’s handsets, too. That’s right — the app just disappeared. The company doesn’t seem to know what’s going on, either, but everyone’s trying to figure it out. What it looks like at the moment, is that Apple pulled their kill switch, and this is the result: utter confusion. [via SlashGear]

Opera Mini Updated to 5.1: Updates are bound to happen to anything out there that can be updated, and it’s never a bad thing when they make things better. The update to 5.1 for Opera Mini brings the removal of some icons, as well as the visual speed dial tool for the User Interface, but the changes are said ot make the browser faster, and more stable for devices with less memory. So, if this fits your device’s description, it looks like your browser choice just got a little better. [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

Solar Impulse Flies Overnight on Just Solar Power: There’s skeptics for everything out there, and solar power (and especially any kind of adoption of the alternate power source) has its fair share. One of the reasons for that skepticism is its fundamental behavior at night. Or, if it can work. Well, thanks to the Solar Impulse and the power of the sun, those skeptics can start to quiet down. The solar powered plane completed a 26-hour, straight, flight through the day and night. It was able to recharge its batteries throughout the night thanks to its 12,000 solar panels, which gathered more than enough energy through its flight during the day. [via Physorg]

AQUA2 is Fast and Amphibious: The AQUA2 was created at McGill University in Montreal, and sure enough, it’s the first of its kind. Specifically designed to be able to move around on land, but be just as free-roaming in the water, the AQUA2 can indeed traverse the landscape, as well as dive and swim under water. It can dive down to 120 feet, and it’s capable of being controlled by a remote control tethered via ethernet or fiber optics. And thanks to those flippers, the swimming thing it’s definitely got down. [via Engadget]

This Bike Can Fold Around a Lamp Post: Keeping your bike safe is a pretty high priority for anyone that owns a bike. After all, it may be your best (or only) means of transportation. But, just using a chain to lock your bike to something may not be enough in today’s day-and-age, so that’s why we can thankfully welcome this new foldable bike design from a 21-year old by the name of Kevin Scott. He’s created the world’s first bike that can literally fold at the center, and be wrapped around a post, or whatever else you want, without the need of an extra chain. The lock is actually built into the bike itself, right under the seat, so you just wrap the bike around the post, so that the handlebars reach the lock, and there you go — safe and secure. We want this bad boy right now, and Scott is trying hard to get it picked up by a bike lover with money. So, keep your fingers crossed.

Tonight’s edition of The Daily Slash is going to be a bit different. If you’ll recall, we’ve only ever had one video put into one of these nightly articles, but tonight, well, tonight is special. Why? Because the two videos we’ve included after the break are some of the more interesting ones we’ve seen lately, and we felt like we needed to share them, well past just the standard text-based variation. So, happy Wednesday, and welcome to tonight’s very special edition of The Daily Slash. In the Best or R3 Media, we’ve got the Intercept coming soon, an even better giveaway, and the first images of the retail box for the white iPhone 4. And then in the Dredge ‘Net, we’ve got intelligent service robots, LED monitors, and people who may print too much.

The Best or R3 Media

Samsung Intercept is Coming July 11th: You want a purple phone, right? Sure you do. Well, if you’re lucky enough to already be on Sprint, or you’ve got a hankering for a device that’ll definitely stick out amongst a crowd, then the Samsung Intercept will be perfect for you. It’s the latest Android-based device announced for Sprint, and it features a landscape QWERTY keyboard, Android 2.1, and a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen display. And all for only $99.99 after a new, two-year contract gets signed, and a $100 mail-in rebate. [via Android Community]

SlashGear’s Giving Away Marvel Coloud Headphones: Truth be told, we love when we get the opportunity to give things away to our readers. And while the Daily Slash has never really been about showcasing the biggest stories of the night, tonight we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make sure you heard about this giveaway. It’s for a pair of Marvel Coloud headphones, and there are three to choose from: an Incredible Hulk variation, Iron Man, and The Punisher. Each of them colored just as you’d expect, and adorned with awesome decals of the superhero mentioned, along with Marvel’s label. Go check it out through the link, and follow the rules — maybe you’ll get lucky and win one. [via SlashGear]

iPhone 4 in White’s Box Gets Showcased: Everyone who ordered a black iPhone 4, at least one in five of them probably wanted the white version. But, after Apple announced the pair of devices, they forgot to tell everyone that the white version wouldn’t be available right off the bat. So, now that we’re getting closer to the lighter-hued version’s launch, pictures are starting to show up. So, that’s why we get excited about a box. And yes, if you’re thinking about waiting for the white version, considering how nice it looks, that would probably be wise. [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

FURO Robots are Helpful and Downright Creepy: There’s a fine line to the awesomeness and creepiness of robots. It’s so fine, in fact, that we’re shocked there’s any designer out there that can land on one side or another. However, while the FURO robots in Korea may be awesome in idea, well, you’ll just have to watch the video to appreciate the creepy-factor. So, go ahead and watch. [via Engadget]

Samsung Intros Eco-Friendly LED Monitors: Whether or not you’re eco-conscious, going with LED monitors seems like the next logical choice, if you’re getting tired of those “boring” LCD monitors you see all over the place. The eco-friendly part is just a bonus, right? That’s where Samsung’s BX2350 and BX2335 come in. They offer a 2ms response time, 1080p resolution with a 16:9 aspect ratio, along with the standard flare of “features” that monitors come with. There’s no word on pricing or availability quite yet, but hopefully we’ll know that soon enough. [via Ubergizmo]

Clever Stop-Motion Film Wastes Ink by the Boat-Load: Speaking of eco-friendly, there’s a push from printer manufacturers, as well as ink manufacturers, to start making better products that don’t waste as much as they used to. That’s great, but then you’ve got people like the ones who created this short film about the love of technology, and how we’re always connected. It’s a great film at heart, but if they really did use this much ink, or that much paper to make this video, well, they may have gone too far. Not that it’s a bad video at all, it’s surely a lot of fun to watch, but you’ll notice when they get into space that, there’s a lot of ink to make space on paper. [via Pocket-Lint]

Tonight’s a bit of a phone night, and we really can’t explain why. But, as you know, it happens. But, in any event, welcome to the eve of the rest of the week. In tonight’s edition of The Daily Slash, tucked away in The Best of R3 Media, we’ve got what HTC calls plans for the future of Android and HTC Sense, the coolest ceiling fan in the history of ceiling fans, and the Droid Incredible’s (shocker) been pushed back again. And then in the Dredge ‘Net, scientists have created a ridiculously strong battery, the original Kindle patent spells doom and gloom for the competition, and some lucky Droid X pre-orderers are getting their devices early.

The Best of R3 Media

Android 2.2 Expected for Most HTC Sense-based Devices by Christmas: When it comes to getting updates ready and released for devices, HTC and Motorola are in a pretty high-stakes tie for frustrating their customers the most. But, at least if you take the word of one HTC exec, then it looks like HTC’s got a clamp on Android 2.2 hitting their devices in the future. They actually expect to have all of their devices upgraded and ready to go by Christmas — so that’s not that bad at all. Then again, if you think about the rumors that Google’s all set to announced Android 3.0 around the same time . . . well, then we guess it’s a whole other story. [via Android Community]

Ribbon Ceiling Fans Should Win All of the Awards: We’re not sure how many aesthetic awards are out there, let alone awards for designs or anything else remotely connected to a ceiling fan, but the Ribbon Fan should win them all. It’s not only the coolest looking fan in the history of fans, but apparently the designers expect this bad boy to actually come out in the market some day. We can just hope for soon. And by soon, we mean sooner than that. Like, tomorrow. The helical blades work to push the air throughout the room and not just straight down, and it actually uses less energy, too. So, a win-win for everyone. [via SlashGear]

HTC Droid Incredible Pushed Back into August: If you were someone who pre-ordered the Droid Incredible, then you’ve got this whole “sit and wait” thing down by now. But, if you were thinking that maybe the whole situation had been figured out by now, and you were planning on heading into your local Verizon store and getting your pre-order on, you might want to take a moment and think about it. According to Verizon’s site, the Incredible’s been pushed back to the first week of August, and if we’re going off the past at all, that’s probably a trend that’s not going to stop any time soon. Even if we are hoping. [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

Scientists Create Super Battery: Ever heard of Xenon Difluoride? It’s okay if you haven’t. Basically, on a normal day, it’s just a normal chemical that’s not known for doing much outside of looking good. However, if you were to, say, crush it with the pressure of 1 million times our atmosphere, apparently it does something super. That’s right, it actually becomes a super compound, and thanks to some crazy science, that energy that was used to actually crush the chemical gets stored in its chemical bonds. That results in a ridiculously powerful storage device. Or, if you’re creative enough, a battery. It’s not all that easy to recreate all the time, but right now, the little metal-looking cube is the most powerful non-nuclear storage device ever created. And that’s some pretty unreal, yet fabulous news if you ask us. We can thank the scientists at Washington State’s chemistry lab for this great find, by the way. So, if you’re in the area, might want to buy them a round or two. [via DVICE]

Amazon’s Kindle Patent Finally Accepted: It’s actually been awhile since Amazon put their patent for the design of the Kindle. Actually, it dates back all the way to 2006. And it’s actually general enough that competitors like the nook and Alex could very well be in some for troubled water in the future. You see, Amazon’s patent definitely makes mention of a dual-screen piece of hardware, and if you’ll recall, the nook and Alex flaunt those dual-screens like there’s no tomorrow. Of course, there’s all sorts of reasons that Amazon remained silent when those devices hit store shelves, or were even announced, and we can’t presume to know what they are thinking. What the patents tell us, though, is that Amazon was clearly just looking into the future of eReaders, and they wanted to make sure that they covered their bases for all of the hardware they planned, or ever thought they’d plan on releasing. We’ll see if this gets interesting soon enough. [via CrunchGear]

Some Droid X Pre-Orders Landing in Customer’s Hands: Well, shucks. Good news for those who pulled the trigger on the latest juggernaut Android-based device from Motorola, though. Apparently, some of these 4.3-inch bad boys are actually showing up on people’s doorsteps. And, what’s more interesting about the whole thing, is the fact that the official Droid X Twitter account (@DroidLanding) might actually be telling all those who follow it where, exactly, those are landing. We originally thought it was a scavenger hunt, but considering the similarities of the posts, and where the devices are showing up, it’s a bit too much of a coincidence to overlook. In any event, it looks like Motorola might have a super-sneaky plan up their sleeve, and if that’s the case, then those lucky folks should start thinking the company at large. [via Droid-Landing]

It’s now been a day since the festivities of your Fourth of July adventures should have ended, but considering today was a “bank holiday,” we wouldn’t be too surprised to hear that you’re still pretty preoccupied with other activities. But, if you’re reading this, then you must know what’s really important. Right? Right. So, with that out of the way, welcome to tonight’s edition of The Daily Slash. In the Best of R3 Media, we’ve got a Charm from Motorola, a Gravity Phone, and some good news for one lucky customer who Intercepted a device. And then in the Dredge ‘Net, we’ve got quick chargers for electric cars on the horizon, fingerprint sensors going into photocopiers, and Sony’s cut down on their eReader prices.

The Best of R3 Media

Back to School Sale Gets you a Motorola Charm: When you’re on your back to school, there’s plenty of folks looking for the next great deal. That’s why those back to school sales exist. This time around, from T-Mobile, you’ll be able to get your hands on a brand new device from Motorola. Featuring Android 2.1, MOTOBLUR, and a physical form factor dangerously reminiscent of a BlackBerry, the Charm is one device that will definitely turn heads, one way or another. It’s also cheap, even without contract, so the free price tag isn’t that surprising. [via Android Community]

Gravity Phones Makes Things Heavy: In the ever-changing world of the smartphone market, seeing concepts of upcoming devices (whether that’s just in a designer’s head or not) is one of the highlights of our week. And when things like the Gravity Phone come out of nowhere, well, you can see why. From the front, you see a giant glossy HD-resolution display. And then on the back, a strange designed that looks like an iPhone and a Zune HD combined, making some weird X-thing. It’s definitely interesting looking. Especially with the HDMI port, and a display that features 1080p, we can’t pass it up. [via SlashGear]

Lucky Customer Gets a Samsung Intercept a Week Early: A Sprint customer went into a Sprint store, asked for a Samsung Intercept, and the employee was happy enough to provide him with his wish. That’s probably not what happened, exactly, but we can dream. In any event, a Sprint customer really did get a Samsung Intercept a week early. It features a landscape slider with a physical QWERTY keyboard and Google’s Android mobile Operating System. It’s an “entry level” device, so don’t think it’s your next superphone or anything. It doesn’t look half-bad, though. [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

Quick Chargers for Electric Cars Exist — and They’re Fast: As of right now, quick-chargers apparently only charge an electric battery to roughly 80% of its capacity in about a half hour. That’s not quick enough for some people, and that’s why the company JFE Engineering is coming in to save the day. According to them, they’ve created a quick charger that can charge a battery to 50% of its capacity in just three minutes. If that’s not enough, just leave it on there for about two more minutes, and you’ll get 70% of your battery’s charge. So, super fast, basically. JFE plans on having these chargers installed at convenience stores all over Japan by March 2011. [via CrunchGear]

Canon Japan Puts Fingerprint Scanners on Photocopiers: Apparently, Japan has a real problem with people using photocopiers to a ridiculous amount. Like, too much. And while some companies have badges that get used at work, those can be passed around way too easily, and therefore that defeats the whole purpose. So, fingerprint scanners are the next best step. You won’t be able to make as many copies as you want — unless you’ve got someone there with the access. We think this is probably one of the greatest inventions in the world, and we would love for this to get passed around to more international markets. Just because it’s fantastic. [via OhGizmo!]

Sony Finally Cuts the Price for Their eReaders: So, Amazon did it for their Kindle, right after Barnes and Noble did it for their nook. And even some other eReaders out there in the world followed suit. And finally, Sony’s done it, too. The Pocket Edition (the bare bones version) is now only $149. As for the Touch Edition, you’ll get that for $169.99. And finally, at the top of the Sony eReader hill, you get the Daily Edition for a whopping $299.99. Many would still consider that a bit too pricey, but obviously Sony’s got a plan. Right? [via Gear Diary]

By now, you’re probably already well into your fourth of July celebration. If not, you’re already behind the curve, so start celebrating your long weekend! Most of you probably don’t have work on Monday, so go ahead and take the time to relax — you deserve it. We’ll try and help you out tonight, in this edition of The Daily Slash. First up, in the Best of R3 Media, we’ve got some rumors about Android 2.2 and the original Droid, ColorWare wants to paint your new Xbox 360, and Verizon’s been forced to fork out $21 million. And then in the Dredge ‘Net, we’ve got a countertop that’ll teach you things, a digital burial ground for the KIN, and some new information about Google Music.

The Best of R3 Media

July 13th is Rumored Date for Froyo Update to Droid: Rumors are already starting to kick off about the future update for the original Droid. We know that it’s coming some time in July, or at least that’s what some documents have said and what Motorola’s Sanjay Jha pretty much tossed out at the announcement for the Droid X. Thanks to some sources who are apparently familiar with the matter, they’ve been told that July 13th is the day of days. Yes, two days before the launch of the Droid X. Now we just have to hope that it doesn’t get delayed as often as the 2.1 update did, or people may riot. [via Android Community]

ColorWare Will Paint Your Xbox 360 S: When it comes to custom coloring, ColorWare knows what they’re doing. You could call them professionals. And since they did enough paint jobs with the mobile gadgets, and even HDTVs, it looks like they’re ready to pain the Xbox 360 S, too. You can either buy one from ColorWare with your customized choices for $500, or send yours in for $175. Not as expensive as some of their earlier paint jobs, but maybe still just a bit much for a paint job. [via SlashGear]

Verizon Loses ETF Class-Action Lawsuit, Pays a Bunch: When ETFs were common (they still are), and they didn’t fluctuate much in their whole pricing scheme, people weren’t all that happy about it. So, of course, a class-action lawsuit came from it, and here we are today, after that was started in 2008, and Verizon’s just now having to pay out to a few appeals that were floating around out there. Each person gets $87.50, which equals out to be $21 million when it all finishes up. Quite a lofty sum. [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

Countertop of the Future Scans Food: Oh, and it will also tell you how to cook it. Yeah, that’s right. This countertop reflects the same amount of tech and innovation as Microsoft’s Surface, but it’s entire job is to just scan food, tell you helpful hints and nutritional information. But, best of all, a pico projector will be used to actually tell you how to cook the food, too, depending on what you’re trying to make. You can even use a virtual shopping list. [via DVICE]

Deceased Microsoft KIN Gets a Website Graveyard: This is definitely one of the most interesting stories we heard all day. As I’m sure you know by now, the Microsoft Kin One and Kin Two have been axed by Microsoft. They’re going to focus on Windows Phone 7, and apparently that means KIN has no place in this world. Well someone out there misses their device, because they put up a memorial site for the deceased device. 2010-2010. Such a short life, indeed! [via TechCrunch]

Android 3.0 Will Launch Concurrently with Google Music: Google’s plan for Google Music is all set up, and by now they’re probably just getting ready to launch it. And, while there’s not a whole lot of information to go on here, we can say that Google’s very own project manager Gaurav Jain has confirmed that Android 3.0, better known as Gingerbread, will launch with Google Music by the end of this year. That’s good news for all the folks who don’t want to use iTunes anymore, especially if you get to use that brand new Operating System along with it. [via Gizmodo]

The beginning of the month. By now, you’re probably already getting ready for your fourth of July weekend, and there’s definitely nothing wrong with that. We’d be lying if we said we weren’t. It’s a big holiday. Until then though, welcome to tonight’s edition The Daily Slash. First up, in the Best of R3 Media, we’ve got a new rumor about a 2GHz Android device, an iPhone class-action lawsuit, and some other devices get some prices leaked. And then in the Dredge ‘Net, we’ve got some eyewear with an integrated USB stick, and a Fujitsu netbook gets released into the world.

The Best of R3 Media

HTC Sabor Features 2GHz Processor: When it comes to cell phones, smartphones, or superphones, there’s no getting around the fact that they’re getting powerful. Ridiculously powerful, if you ask us. And we already know that Motorola’s Sanjay Jha wants a 2GHz Android-based device of his own by the end of 2010, so this rumor doesn’t seem to be too far off. But, according to a “person in the know,” it looks like HTC’s all set to launch the Sabor, which is a 2GHz Android-based device. Also noteworthy, is the idea that HTC is going to make their own display to combat Samsung’s AMOLED variations. So, start your rumor mill, folks. [via Android Community]

iPhone 4 Class-Action Lawsuit is a Go: General negligence, breach of express warranty, an defect in design. Those are all named in a new class-action lawsuit, amongst a lot more. And, truth be told, no one should have been surprised that this was coming. People do this kind of thing for all sorts of crazy reasons, and if you buy a new phone and it doesn’t actually work as a phone for design reasons (and not the network), then people probably have a place to to complain. We’ll have to see where this one goes, because it’s definitely getting interesting. [via SlashGear]

Motorola Charm and Samsung Supersonic Prices Leak: Oddly enough, we look forward to seeing leaked images of a price sheet. We really do. (We don’t have much to look forward to, okay?) As far as this sheet goes, it’s nothing all that groundbreaking. The Motorola Charm is a MOTOBLUR device featuring Android 2.1, and it’s all set to get launched for $74.99 on a new, two-year contract. And the Samsung Supersonic? Well, we think that’s the Samsung Vibrant, just with a different moniker for this particular sheet. Price wise, you’re looking at the standard $199.99 on a new, two-year contract. So, start saving up for that 4-inch AMOLED displaying, TouchWiz 3.0 on Android 2.1-goodness. [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

Le-Samourai Eyewear Has a Built-in USB Stick: We honestly have no idea why anyone would want this, but here it is. They are a concept of eyewear that has a built-in USB stick, just in case you ever really need one right there and now. They don’t look half bad, and the designer is aiming to get sunglasses and prescription-versions available some time in the future as well. We can see this actually being interesting if they were integrated with some kind of 3D technology, so we could watch a movie right on our glasses, but just to have a USB stick on-hand seems kind of ridiculous. [via Ubergizmo]

Fujitsu PH520 Netbook Ships for $599: Netbooks usually hit the mid-range or expensive marker, and in this case, one might consider it a bit expensive, but at least the specifications aren’t terrible. This Fujitsu model features an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 pixel display, 1.7GHz AMD Athlon II Neo K125 processor, and an option for a 320GB hard drive. You also get Bluetooth, WiFi 802.11b/g/n, and 2GB of RAM. Yes, it could be better, but at least it won’t break the bank, either. Plus, it comes in a nice red color. And that’s always nice for your tech gadgets. [via Liliputing]

It’s officially the last day of the month. In fact, while many of you are reading this, you might actually be putting your toes into the first day of July. If that’s the case, then try and save some of the excitement for the rest of us, all right? Welcome to tonight’s edition of The Daily Slash. First up, in The Best of R3 Media, it looks like Motorola’s late on the schedule of updates, Microsoft’s got bad news for Kin adopters, and LG announced a new phone. And then in the Dredge ‘Net, Amazon’s getting ready for you to preview Kindle books in another way, and if you’re running Windows 7 Starter Edition, it’s time to upgrade.

The Best of R3 Media

Android 2.1 Update for Cliq and Cliq XT Delayed: When it comes to Android and Motorola, they do really well right out of the gate. Their phones, at least at launch, are something to be enticed about. However, as the months tick along, and Google’s busy releasing new updates for their mobile Operating System, Motorola has been remarkably hit-or-miss on the subject. And, truth be told, more miss than hit. After missing several announced dates for updating the Motorola Droid, the Cliq and Cliq XT were eagerly awaiting their update to Android 2.1 by the second quarter of 2010. Well, they missed that date, and on the last day they possibly could toss up a warning, they did. Telling customers the update’s still coming, but they don’t know when. So, if you’re holding your breath, might want to stop. Be good for your health.
The Microsoft KIN is Dead: After being in the market for only 48 days, Microsoft has made the official decision to go ahead and kill off the KIN lineage. That means the Kin One and Kin Two are, from this point on, dead. Even if Verizon doesn’t want to admit it to themselves, or maybe customers, word came down from the higher-ups that the Redmond-based company is focusing on Windows Phone 7, and therefore they don’t have time for something like the KIN. So, bad news for those out there who purchased it, but good news for future Windows Phone 7 owners, hopefully. [via SlashGear]

LG Sentio Finally Released: It had been broke from cover a few months ago, and now the LG Sentio is finally official. So official in fact, that T-Mobile is actually selling it right now. So, if you’re in the market for a mid-range touchscreen device, featuring a 3-inch display, and social networking features to make sure that you get caught up with all your friends all the time, then go ahead and get ready to drop $69.99 on a new, two-year contract, and after a $50 mail-in rebate. Or you could just but it out-right for $179.99. Your call. [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

Kindle Turns to HTML 5: Right now, Amazon’s Kindle application for Apple’s iOS is far more useful and feature-packed than the actual Kindle itself, but we won’t worry about that right now. And, they’ve just released the Kindle for Android application, too. But what about the PC? Well, if you want to grab a preview of a book you’re interested in, you’ll be abel to do that without opening another application. You just need to swear your allegiance to HTML 5, and you’ll be able to read a chapter or two before you decide to buy anything. Good plan, Amazon. [via Ubergizmo]

Windows Any Time Upgrade Ends Saturday: All good things must come to an end. And in classic Microsoft tradition, their period of offering cheaper upgrades to their current generation Operating Systems is coming to an end yet again. If you currently find yourself on Windows 7 Starter Edition, and you were hoping to nab an upgrade to Home Premium for only $50, then you need to act now. Or if you’re on Home Premium and want to jump up to Professional for $79.99, then your time is runnig out. Micrsoft is pulling the plug on the cheap updates this Saturday, so you’ll be expected to pay the full price — $79.99 and $89.99 respectively. Anyone going to jump on this before time runs out? [via Engadget]

Welcome to tonight’s edition of The Daily Slash. By now, you’ve probably finished your dinner, and you’re sitting back to get a recap of some of the other stories that have made the rounds over the Interwebs. Well, that’s exactly why we’re here. So, sit back and enjoy. To start us off, we have the Best of R3 Media. We’ve got the first images of the Samsung Fascinate, along with Hulu Plus getting announced, and to wrap it up we’ve got some more Verizon iPhone rumors for you. And then in the Dredge ‘Net, it looks like Google’s back in China, and there’s a real flying car.

The Best of R3 Media

Samsung Fascinate Breaks Cover: When the Samsung Fascinate was announced, amidst a deluge of Samsung Galaxy S device announcements, there was one thing curiously missing: pictures. That was pretty shocking, especially considering it was announced for Verizon. But, sure enough, tonight at Samsung’s Galaxy S conference, the Fascinate managed to wrangle up some hands-on time. And, truth be told, it was worth the wait. Some might even say that it looks better than the original. But, then again, you’ll have to go through the link to take a look for yourself, and judge it based on the image. [via Android Community]

Hulu Plus is Real. Really, Really Real: After so many rumors that it was getting ridiculous, we can finally say that the real thing is finally here. And, it’s actually worth it — if you really like TV. The Hulu Plus package includes a “Season Ticket,” which means you’ll be able to watch all of the episodes of a particular season as you want. No ending early. As for hardware, it’s hitting Sony’s HDTVs, Blu-ray Players, Vizio’s same hardware, and it’s coming to the Sony PlayStation 3 some time in 2010. As for the Xbox 360, that’s not hitting the console until 2011. So, while it’s official, it’s not exactly on everything, quite yet. [via SlashGear]

iPhone Coming to Verizon in January: So, the iPhone is coming to Verizon in January. At least, that’s what some sources have said speaking to Bloomberg. No, they don’t have any details. And no, there’s no confirmation from Verizon or Apple about the subject. Right now, it’s just the biggest rumor in our lives. But, as long as these sources keep saying it, and if it eventually ever happens, they’ll be right, right? [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

Google’s in China Again: Google apparently decided that getting kicked out of China entirely wasn’t the best option. So, while they already had some ideas, they’ve just decided that adding a link to the Google link routed to Hong Kong was a better plan altogether. As for hosting data on some China-based servers, you’ll find Maps, music, and translation. And, if they are going to be hosted on those servers, they cannot be censored. Unfortunately, the changes that Google has made don’t mean that it’s going to keep its license. China is busy figuring that out right now, apparently (considering it’s already Wednesday over there). [via Engadget]

There’s a Real Flying Car: While the future is all sorts of awesome, we’ve had fears about some things. One of them, sadly, are flying cars. But, our fears don’t mean anything to the FAA, because they’ve just proved that anything can get approved if you put enough effort into it. In point of fact, they’ve just announced that there’s a real flying car. And it’s approved. Really. It costs $194,000, and the wings are detachable. And it’s completely street legal. As for hours of flying training you need to get this up and running under your own pilot’s license . . . We’ll go ahead and say that if you see this on the street, it’s time to get off the street. [via DVICE]

With at least one more announcement to go until June can officially end, tonight’s edition of The Daily Slash may seem like it’s a bit weighted. But, we assure you that, just like any other edition, it’ll be worth it. First up, as usual, is the Best of R3 Media. Tucked away inside of it, you’ll find that the Dell Streak’s available in the UK unlocked, a new domain may make you blush, and now we’ve got some rumors of the BlackBerry Storm 3. And then in the Dredge ‘Net, Windows 8 breaks cover kind of, the PSP-4000 and 3DS could be sold in Japan this year, and NASA loves their concept images.

The Best of R3 Media

Dell Streak Available Now in UK Unlocked: If you’re at all interested in the Dell Streak, the 5-inch Android-powered MID from Dell, and you find yourself in the United Kingdom right now, then start saving up your monies. Because the new gadget is available right now for 449 Euros, completely SIM-free. What you’ll get is the Android 1.6-based device, featuring a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and a 5MP camera on the back. Not as big as a tablet, and dangerously close to some smartphones out there, the Dell Streak finds itself placed nicely in the middle. It’s up to you whether or not the price tag is too steep for the unlocked variation. [via Android Community]

New Domain, .xxx, Allowed to Move Forward: Well, that’s definitely one for the record books. When it comes to domains, we’re all accustomed to things like .com, .net, or even .org. But, now thanks to a long-winded domain application, the new domain .xxx has been approved to move forward through the process of ultimately being allowed onto the Internet. And yes, the domain would be primarily used for what you’re imagining it would be used for. And yes, that does mean it will make it easier to watch over those folks that may need to sneak around while doing what that domain is meant for. So, that’s a good thing. [via SlashGear]

BlackBerry Storm 3 to Have 1GHz Processor: The original BlackBerry Storm was a pretty big hit for both RIM and Verizon, but then it got marred by bad press when people started hating pressing down their screens to do anything. So then the Storm 2 released, with an updated input function, but unfortunately the damage had been done. Now rumors about the Storm 3 have sprung up, and thankfully they’ve been updated to today’s standards. It will apparently feature a new input method, as well as a 1GHz processor. And, because it’s going to launch on Verizon, it will apparently be ready for LTE, or Verizon’s chosen 4G technology. Our fingers are crossed, because we want this to be true. [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

Windows 8 Shows Up Early: There’s no doubt that Windows 7 is selling well, but that’s not stopping the Redmond-based company from looking into the future. And by future, we mean the future where computers act on their own, just because you get close to them. According to some features that have sneaked out onto the Web, Windows 8 will feature thing like “visual login,” and a far improved performance boost for start-up. Meaning it won’t take you ten minutes (exaggeration, yes) to start up your Windows-based PC anymore, hopefully. There’s also facial recognition for log-in, log-out, and that’s straight out of science-fiction, so we’re all for it. We’re more than happy to see new features hit Windows 8, but we’re just hoping that they actually improve the experience, and not just make the development paper look good. [via Engadget]

PSP-4000 and 3DS Could be Launched in Japan This Year: Thanks to some recent documents that have just been published online, it looks like the fate of the upcoming handhelds from Sony (which actually hasn’t been officially unveiled), and the 3DS from Nintendo, are sealed. At least for Japan, anyway. According to the document, both handheld gaming platforms are scheduled to release by the end of 2010. We’ve heard contradictory reports from Reggie Fils-Aime about the launch of the Nintendo 3DS, but obviously Sony hasn’t said anything considering their new peripheral hasn’t even been announced. This is getting interesting, so we’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more. [via CrunchGear]

NASA Reimagines the Supersonic Jet: Supersonic jets are ridiculous in of themselves, and despite the fact that it isn’t the main way to fly right now, that’s not stopping NASA from designing their own version of a jet of the future. The machine itself is designed in a partnership with NASA and Lockheed Martin, and it features something called an inverted V-wing, which is actually connected to the tail section thanks to the massive engines on its back-side. The design is meant to increase energy efficiency, as well as decrease the noise created from a sonic boom. It’s just a concept right now, but we’re hoping that this gets put into development as soon as possible. We want to fly everywhere around the world as quickly as humanly possible. Yes. That’s our dream. [via DVICE]

We’re at the tail-end of the week, and we’re not going to lie: we can feel it. All the way to our bones. If you’re getting paid this Friday, hopefully you’ve already decided on something to buy yourself — gotta spend that earned money, right? Or, maybe you’ve already waited in line for the thing you wanted to get yourself? That’s probably the case. But, moving away from the Apple-phone for a short time, let’s take a look at The Best of R3 Media. First up, we’ve got a software update for the EVO 4G coming soon, an updated keyboard that we want, and some wireless syncing for BlackBerrys. And then, in the Dredge ‘Net, Hulu’s still being passed around, RIM does pretty well for itself, and head to a Microsoft Store to play some Kinect.

The Best of R3 Media

HTC EVO 4G Primed for June 28th Software Update: Don’t get your hopes up, though. We’ll go ahead and tell you right now: it’s not Android 2.2. Basically, the update itself is pinned as a minor software update, and it’s going to address some bugs to the system, and that’s about it. Things like issues with the Facebook application, as well as alterations to the social networking sync. Basically, things are getting fixed. And, that’s never a bad thing. So, start counting down the days, folks — unless it turns out not to be true. Then we don’t know what to tell you. [via Android Community]

Optimum Popularis Keyboard Features Awesome Keys: When a keyboard features things like changeable digital keys, we’re fans. Even if it’s not the greatest thing since sliced bread, we’re going to be fans of things that make us think the future’s happening now. When the original Optimus Maximus was unveiled, things weren’t all that warmly welcomed, as the touch-keyboard wasn’t very easy to actually type on. But, now that the Optimus Popularis is unveiled, we have keys that have actually grown in size, making them easier to type on, while the keyboard itself has slimmed down significantly. [via SlashGear]

ParkVu Music WithMe App Syncs BlackBerrys to iTunes Wirelessy: While the iPhone doesn’t have WiFi sync to iTunes quite yet, there’s an application for BlackBerry owners out there right now that will let you do it. Using either WiFi, or your 3G signal, you’ll be able to connect to iTunes and sync your playlist of choice. The application doesn’t even need to be running to work, as it can run in the background. Additionally, the app itself works with the BlackBerry media player, so it just works. Consider those BlackBerry users lucky, eh? [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

Sony Wants Hulu on the PlayStation 3: Hulu wants to be on everything, and apparently everyone wants Hulu on everything else. That’s not a problem to us, considering we figure the subscription-based service is coming whether we have it on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, so, we’ll take it where we can get it. Sources have told Bloomberg that Sony’s in talks, and is allegedly close to closing the deal to activating Hulu on the PlayStation 3. It would be an extension of the PlayStation Network. No more details, sadly, but we’ll keep our ear to the ground on this one. [via Electronista]

RIM Sells 100 Million BlackBerrys: So, you heard about wireless sync to iTunes, now lets find out how many phones Research in Motion have sold, shall we? Despite the fact Apple launched the iPhone 4 today, RIM wanted to tell their story, too. And, it’s actually not that bad. They sold 100 million BlackBerrys, and they had a fiscal growth of 24 percent year-over-year. And it had 11.2 million shipments of smartphones this quarter alone. Pretty fantastic, right? Yeah, we thought so. [via Engadget]

Microsoft Kinect Can be Played at Microsoft Stores — Now Find One: Want to play Kinect before you decide to buy one? Yes, yes you do. So, we figure we should just tell you where to find one: Scottsdale, Arizona, Mission Viejo, California, Lone Tree, Colorado, and one that just opened today, actually: San Diego, California. Yes, Microsoft unveiled today that you can visit any one of their stores and take a shot at it, but considering the low amount of stores, you’ll probably have to wait in a line. At least, Microsoft is probably hoping for lines. As for a price? Nope. Still no official word. So, keep holding your breath. (Not literally.) [via Microsoft Twitter]

Oh, and one more tid-bit of information we wanted to pass on. Interested in the iPhone 4? Then check out the new Roots page! http://roots.slashgear.com/iPhone-4 — it’s our new project, and we’re happy to show it off to everyone! So check it out, and let us know what you think!

Wednesday’s seem to have a mind of their own. Seriously, they can just feel like they go on forever. That hump at the middle of the week can either be a great motivator, or something that just drags you down. Thankfully, considering the announcements and other pieces of news, today was definitely a good day. Welcome to The Daily Slash. Tonight, in the Best of R3 Media, we’ve got an expected release date for Froyo, we go hands-on with the Parrot AR.Drone, and US Cellular is getting a BlackBerry. And then in the Dredge ‘Net, Xbox 360 won’t play Zune music in the background, the Nintendo 3DS can do 3D video chat, we’ve got a huge yacht.

The Best of R3 Media

Froyo Landing on Motorola Droids in July and August: At the announcement for the Droid X today, it was made perfectly clear that the update to Android 2.2, for the Droid X and the original Droid, was coming by the end of the Summer. And now, thanks to some leaked direct images from an internal Verizon Wireless source, we are starting to get a bit more of a clearer image. The original Droid is apparently getting the update to Froyo a month ahead of the Droid X — it’s expected to launch at the end of July. As for the Droid X? That’s coming at the end of August, apparently. [via Android Community]

Parrot AR.Drone Hands-On: The Parrot AR.Drone is definitely one of the most talked about, and heavily wanted items on the planet right now. And, thanks to our charms here at SlashGear, we were able to get some hands-on time with the new-fangled device. You’ll be able to control the Drone from your iPhone or iPod Touch (that includes the iPad, too), and there’s even an Android application coming some time in the future. There will be interactive games that you’ll be able to “play” on the mobile controller, with more games coming from an open source approach later, after the device launches later this year. Check out the other details, pictures, as well as the video through the link. [via SlashGear]

BlackBerry 9650 Heading to US Cellular: As CDMA-based devices go, the BlackBerry lineage is a breed that gets passed around a lot. No surprise here, but the device that’s already made an appearance on Verizon Wireless and the Sprint Network is making its way to the sixth largest wireless carrier in the United States, better known as the regional carrier U.S. Cellular. It’s launching some time in early August, but other than that, we’ve got no more information, as US Cellular is being remarkably quiet on the launch. Guess they have to have their surprises, too, right? [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

Zune Music Comes to Xbox 360, No You Can’t Listen to It While You Play Games: Long title, because it deserves one. Not because it’s good news, though. If you’ve got your hands on an Xbox 360, and you’re one that’s used Last.fm before, then you know that music played from Last.fm can’t be played while you’re playing games, or anything else for that matter. That’s right — you’re console can’t multitask that certain application. In any event, Zune is just about ready to make it so you can use your Zune Pass on your 360, but it’ll work just like Last.fm — no music multitasking. But, then again, if you’ve got a Zune Pass, then you probably have a computer and the Zune Software, which means you can just connect your computer to the Xbox 360, thanks to wireless syncing, and play your music that way, right from the media player. So . . . Problem solved? [via Gizmodo]

Nintendo 3DS May Do 3D Video Chat, How Cool is That? Yes, that rhymes. Excuse us, we’re in a curious mood tonight. Anyway! Apparently, Nintendo’s dropped some hints that 3D video chat can, and will be done on the Nintendo 3DS. No idea how, considering that the 3D cameras are on the outside of the device, but hey, Nintendo’s obviously got some ideas. Now, we make it happen. We want 3D video chat! [via Kotaku]

Trinity Euphoria Yacht is Real, Costs A Lot: Yachts are expensive. There’s definitely no denying that. And, the Trinity Euphoria is $39,000,000 worth of 168-feet goodness. It can comfortably hold 10 people in its five state rooms. There’s a pair of 2,250-hp engines, too, and they can send the yacht on 3,000 nautical miles on a tank of fuel. That’s beyond impressive. [via The Awesomer]

Did it feel like Wednesday to anyone else? We had to check our calendar’s a few times today, just to make sure it really was Tuesday. You’ll have to forgive us — we don’t get out much, as you can probably imagine. In any event, welcome to tonight’s edition of The Daily Slash, Tuesday-style. Tonight, in the Best of R3 Media, we’ve got some more Cease and Desist letters being handed out, Apple’s sold a ton of iPads, and the iPhone 4′s showing up at Walmart. As for the Dredge ‘Net, the iPhone 4′s getting torn down (legally), there’s rumors about iOS showing up on other things, and we’ve got a German robot.

The Best of R3 Media

Fancy Widget Gets Cease & Desist Letter: So, HTC’s got a lot of Cease and Desist letters being tossed around. While hackers are getting their fair share for having some ROMs stored somewhere, it looks like developers are getting the fair share, too. The developers of the widget, which is dangerously similar to the clock/weather widget found on HTC Sense UI-based devices, have been told that their time in the Market is almost up. In doing so, the devs have informed their customers that only one more update would be made available, before Fancy Widget disappears forever into the memory of vanilla Android owners everywhere. [via Android Community]

Apple Sells 3 Million iPads in Less Than 3 Months: Ridiculous. While many would say that this does, indeed, suggest that there’s a tablet market out there, we’d dare to say that this just means there’s a market out there for iPads. Three million in 80 days puts most analyst guesses in the tank, and it looks like Apple’s not slowing down any time soon. Of course, they’ve just released another iDevice, so maybe that means their magical and revolutionary tablet device will slow down in the sales department. Probably not, though. We’re expecting another press release as soon as they reach 4 million. [via SlashGear]

iPhone 4 Shows Up at Walmart: We already know that there’s plenty of few people out there who managed to get their hands on the iPhone 4 early, but that’s not stopping people at Walmarts from showing off their own models, still tucked away nicely in their packaging. No, it’s not the white one, but we can still dream. There’s no telling whether or not how many iPhone 4s there are going to be at Walmarts across the nation, but you can bet there’s going to be some lines. Especially considering AT&T’s not handing them out to walk-in customers until June 29th. So, tread softly. [via PhoneMag]

The Dredge ‘Net

iFixit Tears Down the iPhone 4: Yes, there is a lot of iPhone 4 news. You might even assume that it’s being released any day now. Oh, that’s right — it is. With that being said, the guys over at iFixit have managed to get their hands on the iPhone 4 (and they even managed to get over to Japan, too). They got their hands on one, and as of this writing, they’re still in the process of tearing it down. As of right now, they’ve found: the vibrator (which is in the right-hand corner), and they’ve also confirmed that the iPhone 4′s A4 processor does indeed have 512MB of RAM, which beats out the iPad’s 256MB. The tear down’s still happening, so we imagine that there’s going to be more to unveil tomorrow, so if you’re interested in finding out the final details, stay tuned until tomorrow. [via iFixit]

iOS Showing Up in iMacs? Yes, you read that correctly. According to several rumors coming out of several different locations, but seeming to centralize at LOOPRumors, apparently Apple is getting ready to showcase iOS on something other than an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. Their “sources” suggest that, within the next 60 days, Apple’s going to showcase the mobile Operating System on the iMac. This is going to be a hybrid OS, and not something that stands-alone, so that’s why we’re interested in such a thing. Basically, at the very least, apparently the iMac should have the standard OS X, as well as a touch-based interface from iOS. [via Mac Daily News]

Germany Shoots Out a Humanoid Robot, Minus the Human: Robots are definitely becoming something of the present, and not so much of the future. They’re getting more advanced, and in the process, some times really creepy. For example, we’ve got the Myon from Germany, a humanoid robot that the designers created specifically to look like a five year-old boy. It does have some awesome aspects though, and we’ll admit that it looks cool enough to want right now. Manufactured out of Berlin’s Humboldt University as part of European ALEAR (Artificial Language Evolution on Autonomous Robots) project. He features 48 joints, 35 torsional springs for biological movements, six independent (modular) body parts, and upwards of 192 sensors. He’s got skin, too, which is manufactured from a transparent layer of Bayer makrolon and a layer of glass fiber-stabilized polycarbonate. All designed to protect him, if he falls over. Basically, he’s advanced, and he looks cool. Now we just have to hope he doesn’t try to rule the world. [via CrunchGear]

Hope your weekend went well. We had a pretty busy day here, especially for a Monday, but we’re thrilled that you could stick it out with us. It’s time to wind down, so welcome to Monday’s edition of The Daily Slash. Tonight, in the Best of R3 Media, we’ve got a great app for your Android device, Sony’s talking smack about the 3DS, and Verizon Wireless completes a round of LTE testing. In the Dredge ‘Net, Nike’s got a giant LED screen, AT&T and Verizon kind of agree on something, and Kinect gets priced by Microsoft — still not officially.

The Best of R3 Media

QuickDesk for Android Brings Multitasking to a New Level: One of the more touted features of the Android mobile Operating System, is the fact that it can multitask. Want to run multiple applications in the background? Good, because Android can do that. But, what if you wanted a new, dare we say better way to do it? In comes QuickDesk, a desktop application/home replacement that allows you to set more widgets/icons on a separate homescreen from the rest of your previously filled versions have. You can using your Browser for something and want to switch to your WiFi. So, instead of hitting Home to go back to your homescreens, and then dig into your Settings (or use the Power Management widget), you can simply access QuickDesk right on the fly, activate WiFi, and then go back to your browsing, easy as pie. Check it out through the link. [via Android Community]

Nintendo 3DS’ Tech Isn’t Precise, Sony’s Better, Says Sony: Truth be told, the executives in charge of the gaming market are pretty cut-throat. You know who they’re talking about, even if they don’t say who they’re talking about. And, let’s face it, it’s rare that they don’t say who they’re talking about. This time around, Kaz Hirai, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said that “naked-eye 3D for portables does not have high precision.” Well, fancy that. We’d be willing to bet that if you asked him, Sony’s 3D tech (for their home video game console, the PS3) is so much better, it’s probably ridiculous. But, it’s also safe to assume that, based on Hirai’s statement, Sony tried the technology at some point on their own time, probably for the PSP2, which would feature 3D. Yeah, that would’ve made sense… [via SlashGear]

Technical Trials Complete, Verizon Goes for User Trials: Verizon’s seriously making some headway in their Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G trials. They’ve just announced that they’ve succeeded in their technical trials, and now they are moving to the next, and perhaps most important stage of testing. They’re on the cusp of starting user testing/trials. While we wish this meant that randomly selected customers out there (us, us, us!) would get their hands on some unknown 4G-based handsets, unfortunately that just means some lucky Verizon Wireless employees out there are going to get to rock the next generation of Verizon’s network before anyone else. So . . . Lucky them. [via PhoneMag]

Love the World Cup? Visit Nike’s Giant LED Screen in South Africa: While we’re sure there’s plenty of people out there watching the World Cup, we have to keep an eye out there for the tech that features it in one way or another. This time around, it’s not a robot. Oh, no. This is a huge, and we mean huge LED screen, plastered all over the side of Johannesburg’s Life Centre Skyscraper. Oh, and it’s interactive. Yeah, you can send text from Facebook, along with other social networking sites like Twitter, to be displayed in huge letters on the building for everyone else to see. But text isn’t enough. If you name a player in your update to the LED screen, a video of that player will also get shown off, too. Pretty awesome way to display World Cup love, if you ask us.
AT&T and Verizon Join WiFi Roaming Group: There’s no doubt that there’s plenty of people out there using wireless data. Even as wireless carriers all over the world start restricting people on how much usage they can actually use, other company’s are still trying their hand at unlimited data. But they’re feeling the stress. One way to alleviate that, is to allow customers free, and unhindered access to WiFi hotspots. A new technology will make it easier, and seamless, for cell phone users to transition from their cellular network, to WiFi, and back whenever they come into a Wifi hotspot. Both AT&T and Verizon Wireless have joined the WiFi Roaming Group, in hopes that this technology can be implemented on their networks quickly enough to help with new customers, and more smartphone purchases.
Pre-Order Microsoft Kinect for $149.99 from Microsoft’s Online Store: Yes, you read that right. Despite the fact Microsoft haven’t officially announced the price for the motion-based gaming peripheral, that’s not stopping companies all over the place from pricing it on their own. GameStop, Best Buy, and other places like Amazon already have the unit for pre-order, and that sweet spot seems to be $149.99. What comes in the box? The Kinect sensor, manual, power supply cable, and a WiFi extension cable. We don’t know what that last part is, either. So, Microsoft. We’re ready when you are.
