Along with the WG-10, Pentax has also announced two other rugged camera models: the WG-3 and WG-3 GPS. Both models are waterproof and feature the highest depth rating in the WG series, along with a cold-resistant, dustproof, and crushproof body. You can check out some pictures of the camera, as well as its specs, after the jump.

The WG-3 and WG-3 GPS models are both waterproof to depths of 46 feet (14 meters) and shockproof against drops from heights up to 6.5 feet (2 meters). Both can withstand temps down to 14F (-10C). The big difference between the models is indicated by their names – the WG-3 GPS model can add position and travel log data to images via GPS capabilities. Likewise, the GPS model features wireless recharging, a digital compass, and a gauge showing water depth, altitude, and pressure.

Both cameras feature video recording in up to full 1080p HD, as well as a 3-inch LCD display covered with anti-reflection coating to reduce glares and difficulty seeing. The 16-megapixel CMOS sensor is backlit, there are 12 digital image filters and 16 shooting modes, and support for Eye-Fi wifi SD cards. Because the camera is designed to be rugged, it only makes sense that Pentax included a carabiner strap for both models.

To keep images from coming out blurry, the WG-3/GPS models feature 9-point auto focus, as well as spot auto focus and auto tracking AF. There’s sensor-shift shake reduction, as well as high-sensitivity digital reduction. Both models will be released in April, with the WG-3 being priced at $299.95, and the WG-3 GPS being priced at $349.95.

The outside world is a dangerous place for cameras, fraught with drops and jostles and inconvenient wet environments, whether it be pouring rain or an underwater subject. As such, there’s no such thing as too many cameras aimed for the outdoorsy market, such as the recently unveiled Pentax WG-10. This model offers a water and shock-proof body complete with a unique, rugged design that hints at both the camera’s durability and intended market.

The WG-10 is a compact, lightweight camera offerings basic specs, making it an underwater-capable point-and-shoot that can be easily pocketed and pulled out for impromptu images. The camera can be taken to water depths of nearly 33 feet (10 meter), and can withstands drops from nearly 5 feet (1.5 meters). Likewise, it can handle temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

In addition, the WG-10 is crush-proof with up to 100 kilograms of force and dustproof, being tested at JIS Class 6. The battery offers 2 hours of continuous use, and a Digital Microscope mode that utilizes five LEDs arranged around the camera’s lens for uniform lighting. The lights are designed to illuminate brighter briefly during the shutter release in order to reduce blurs that result from slight vibrations and handshakes in macro photography.

As far as specs go, this camera from Pentax offers a 2.7-inch LCD display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and anti-reflection coating. There’s a 28mm wide-angle lens, as well as 5x optical zoom and 6.7x digital zoom. The CCD sensor clocks in at 14-megapixels, ISO ranges from 80 to 6400, and videos can be recorded in up to 720p HD. The camera is set to hit shelves in April for $179.95.

This week we got the opportunity to take a peek at a hero device from none other than camera manufacturers Pentax, their MX-1 showing itself to be quite the looker for the 2013 Summer season. This machine is the very first advanced compact camera the company has ever presented, here showing a 12-megapixel sensor, 4x optical zoom, and a solid body with a classic look. This camera also comes with a 3-inch tilting display that’ll allow you to hold your unit above or below, the display pointing out at your face from any forward angle.

The lens on this machine is a 28mm F1.8 wide angle, making sure your next-level photos bring on a life that’ll make you want to stick with Pentax through the future. The middle of this device is a texturized rubbery black while the top and bottom are a cool metallic with brass panels up top and down below. This machine will be available sometime inside 2013, likely by the time Summer rolls around.

For those of you that didn’t see this camera back when it was announced in September of 2012, it’s a real live interchangeable lens system-toting camera with a 12.4-megapixel sensor all in the size of “a pack of cards.” It’s small and it’s powerful, those two things are certainly true.

Pentax’s Q10 isn’t the company’s only new camera today; there’s also a pair of new full-sized DSLRs, the Pentax K-5 II and K-5 IIs, for those wanting native K-series lens support. Each packing a 16.28-megapixel sensor and Pentax’s PRIME II imagine engine, the two new DSLRs offer ISO 100-12800 (ISO 80-51200 in expanded mode) and a 3-inch 921k dot LCD preview display with anti-glare finish and toughened glass cover.

The difference between the two cameras is the absence of an anti-aliasing filter in the K-5 IIs, which makes it good for landscape-style shorts where detail is paramount and distortion less likely. Otherwise, both get a custom shake-reduction mechanism which shifts the CMOS – by approximately three shutter steps – to avoid blur, and 7fps burst shooting for up to 30 shots.

The viewfinder supports 100-percent field of view, while the body is made of magnesium alloy and stainless steel; the body is dustproof and weather-resistant, as well as resilient to temperatures as low as 14-degrees Fahrenheit. There’s a digital level tucked inside too, and a battery good for up to 980 shots on a single charge.

The Pentax K-5 II will go on sale in October, priced at $1,199.95 body-only, or $1,349.95 with the DA 18-55mm WR zoom, or finally $1,549.95 with the DA 18-135mm WR zoom. As for the K-5 IIs, that will also hit in October, priced at $1,299.95 body-only.

Pentax has revealed its latest compact interchangeable-lens camera, the Pentax Q10, a 12.4-megapixel snapper that the company promises will deliver regular DSLR results from a chassis sized like a deck of cards. The Q10, available in a number of colors including the striking red shown here, uses both Pentax’s Q-mount lenses as well as – with the new Adapter Q – existing Pentax K-mount lenses, for a broader array of shooting options.

The new CMOS is backside-illuminated and supports up to ISO 6400; it’s mounted in a shake reduction mechanism of Pentax’s own design, which uses accelerometers to track the Q10′s movements and smooth them out. The camera itself includes an Auto Picture mode, with 21 scenes, and a 5fps burst shooting mode.

A pop-out flash – with an eye-catching multi-jointed mechanism – can be used at two different positions, for different discharge angles, and there’s a choice of four exposure modes including Programmed AE (P), Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, and Metered Manual. A dedicated bokeh control automatically creates the popular defocusing effect.

As for video, the Q10 can record Full HD 1920 x 1080 H.264 clips and outputs via micro-HDMI. A 3-inch LCD is on the back, and Face Recognition can spot and track up to 12 faces in frame. The camera will go on sale in October 2012, priced at $599.95 with an 02 zoom lens, while a new Pentax-06 Telephoto Zoom will be $299.95. The Adapter Q for K-mount lenses will arrive sometime this year, priced at $249.95.

Pentax has announced the launch of a new camera with seriously high levels of zoom. The new digital camera is called the X-5, and the camera has enough zoom to get users up close to whatever their subject is. The camera offers a whopping 26x optical zoom covering a focal length of 22.3 mm to 580 mm in 35mm equivalent.

The camera has 16-megapixel resolution and supports ISO 6400. With 26x optical zoom, keeping blur out of your photos when using full zoom would be impossible without some sort of shake reduction technology. Pentax equipped the camera with a mechanical sensor-shift shake reduction mechanism and digital check reduction modes for still photos and movies.

When combined, the digital and mechanical hybrid shake reduction system promises clear photos at any zoom level. The camera can record full resolution HD video at 30 frames per second using h.264 format and has an integrated micro-HDMI output for sending recorded movies to a big-screen. The camera has an electronic viewfinder with diopter adjustment.

The camera has a number of automatic modes with 16 shooting options and an auto macro function for shooting very close to the subject. The camera is powered by standard AA batteries that can be found just about anywhere. The camera is also capable of shooting bursts at up to 10 shots per second for a maximum of 30 images in a sequence. A number of creative image processing tools and 12 digital filters are integrated. The camera will be available starting in September at an MSRP of $279.95.

Consumers are definitely spoilt for choice when it comes to DSLRs, and here’s another one for you to consider from Pentax. The K-30 should prove somewhat tougher than the average DSLR thanks to its weatherproofing. The company says the K-30 is resistant to dust as well as the colder elements, with “every seam [and] every button” sealed to provide protection while still managing to maintain a lightweight and sturdy body.

As for the crucial specs, they’re comparable to what you would find from competitors – a 16.28 megapixel sensor, ISO 100 – 25600, 1/6000 shutter speed, and 1080p video recording at 24, 25, and 30 frames a second. A high speed burst mode is included which captures six photos per second, and the glass pentaprism ensures you have a 100% field of view.

How much will you be paying for this particularly DSLR? $849.95 for the body only, or $899.95 for a kit which includes a 18-55mm zoom lens. In addition, there’s a 50mm f/1.8 telephoto lens that will set you back $250. All options should be available to pick up starting from July.

There’s also 6fps burst still capture, and an ISO range of 100 to 25,600. The manual focus mode features a peaking system for swifter and more accurate adjustments, and there’s an easily twiddled mode dial and chunky controls. A pop-up glash and powered hotshoe are on the top, while ports include USB 2.0, AV out, HDMI and 3.5mm audio in.

Although the K-01 will work with all of Pentax’s K-mount lenses, the company has also prepared a special super-slim option, the smc PENTAX-DA 40mm F2.8 XS, for those who want to keep the bulk down. It’s the world’s thinnest interchangeable lens, Pentax claims.

A wave of cameras is coming to crash upon the shores of the public late this winter, and the most recent tease is a Pentax K-01 mirrorless shooter designed by no less than Marc Newson. It may seem a bit odd to those of you who are familiar with the work of Newson as his most famous work is that of a “biomorphism” full of flowing lines and a tendency to refrain from all sharp edges. What this camera appears to be instead of that is a rather blunt looking instrument with features piled onto one another in a series of transformers. Of course a good photographer is only concerned with the photo in the end, not the look of the tool.

This new set of “leaked” or “teased” photos shows an interchangeable lens-having camera with one whole heck of a lot of working add-ons to go with it. There’s a rather notable 40mm f/2.8 lens in a fabulously thin profile sitting here in this future setup, and the whole device is set for awesome quick changes with what appears to be an HDR toggle for easy access. Forum posts surrounding the device have revealed quite a few fabulous specifications that might be showing up on this device including full HD video, a 3-inch LCD, and a total weight of 1.2lbs.

This device may well be coming in three different body colors if word on the street proves true, the package also coming with three different lenses as well. Built-in pop-up flash across the board as well, if you please. Have a peek at these leaked photos and see how well they match up with your future desires for a perfect Pentax.

UPDATE: This camera will likely be released officially at an event held tomorrow, so here’s crossing out fingers tightly!

Pentax has announced a new pocket megazoom digital camera called the Pentax Optio VS20 that features 20X optical zoom plus a second shutter button. The camera may be the first pocketable high-zoom model to offer two shutter buttons placed so that it can be comfortably used in both landscape and portrait orientations.

One shutter button is placed on the camera at the conventional location, while the other is placed on the lower right side of the camera. This makes it easier to depress the shutter while using the camera in portrait mode. Besides the side-mounted shutter and zoom controls, the Optio VS20 also offers a secondary tripod mount on the left side of the camera.

Besides the unique dual shutter feature and high-zoom, the Optio VS20 is otherwise a standard fully-automatic pocket camera. It has a 16-megapixel CCD sensor, a 3-inch LCD preview screen, and is capable of 720p HD video capture at 30fps. It also has sensor-shift, ISO optimization, and digital stabilization. It will be available in February for $250.

Many of us may be familiar with lightweight interchangeable lens cameras such as with the micro four-thirds technology. But Ricoh has been offering something slightly different since 2009, when it introduced its GXR series modular cameras that swap out not only the lens but also the camera sensor. The company today announced a new module for the GXR series that will work with Leica M-mount lenses.

Ricoh recently announced it was purchasing Pentax to expand its consumer digital camera business, specifically in the lightweight interchangeable lens camera department. But that doesn’t mean that Ricoh will discontinue its own GXR series cameras, which are preferred by some for the ability to swap out not only the lens but also the camera sensor so that they can better adjust for varying shooting conditions.

The new GXR module is called the A12 and it uses a 12.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with a Leica M mount. It also comes with its own focal plane shutter so that it can be used instead of the camera’s electronic shutter. The module is expected to become available on September 9, priced at $649.

Photography juggling this week, as Ricoh announces plans to buy up the Pentax Imaging Systems business and strike out for new ground in the consumer digicam market. The deal will see current Pentax owner, Hoya Corporation, keep the medical technology side of the business, according to Hoya’s press release [pdf link], having bought Pentax back in early 2008.

That merger was originally motivated by the medical expertise at Pentax, with the digital imaging side simply coming along for the ride. Now, with Ricoh looking to extend its feelers into the consumer digital camera market, the company reckons the best way it can do that is using “the small and lightweight interchangeable lens camera technology, lens technology and sales channels held by the Pentax Imaging Systems Division.”

The split itself is expected to be finalized by the start of October this year, after which point Ricoh will be free to chase its interchangeable lens dreams as well as the “creation and development of value-added services that encourage seeing, storing and refinishing photographs and utilize photographs as communication tools.” No word on what interchangeable format Ricoh will decide upon, whether a home-grown one based on Pentax technology or buying into the Micro Four Thirds standard which has already proliferated.

Pentax has outed its new interchangeable-lens camera, the Pentax Q, and it has whipped the “world’s smallest” titles from out from under the nose of the Sony NEX-C3. The 12.4-megapixel Q has a 1/2.3 inch backlit CMOS image sensor and uses a new Q mount system; there’s in-camera HDR, Full HD 1080p 30fps video recording, sensor-shift shake reduction and 5fps continuous shooting.

Pentax has also thrown in a clever dog-leg style pop-up flash, which the company reckons has a 28-degree wide angle field of view along with 23 foot effectiveness at ISO 200. A Quick Dial settings wheel on the front of the camera can be preset to the Q’s various auto, scene, effects and other modes. There’s also a Bokeh Control filter and shutter speeds ranging from 1/2000 to 30 seconds.

Ports include HDMI, USB and an SDHC memory card slot, while the display is a 3-inch HVGA panel. As for lenses, Pentax is launching the Q mount system with four options (aside from the PENTAX 01 Standard Prime kit lens): the 02 Standard Zoom ($299.95), a 27.5-83.0mm zoom lens with a 30cm focusing distance; the 03 Fish-Eye ($129.95), a 160-degree lens, and the 04 Toy Lens Wide and 05 Toy Lens Telephoto ($79.95 each), offering a 35mm equivalent field of view and a 100mm field of view respectively.

The Pentax Q will go on sale in Japan initially, then follow on in the US in the fall. It will be priced at around $800 as a Prime lens kit, and in black or white. Other accessories include an External Viewfinder (EVF) which will be $249.95.

Sources have been hinting to some camera centric sites that a new mirrorless camera is set to land at Pentax in May or June. All anyone really had to go by was the world of these unnamed sources. Now a new picture of the Pentax NC mirrorless digital camera has surfaced with a couple of lenses in tow.

The camera in the pictures is labeled NC-1 and it has a silver and very retro design. Apparently, Pentax was out to create the smallest mirrorless system in the world and it looks like it succeeded. The camera has a 1/3,33″ sensor that is about the size of the sensor in most compact cameras. The resolution is said to be 14MP and it can record HD resolution video in H.264 format.

A pair of lenses will come along with the camera including a prime 8.5mm f/1.9 lens and a zoom 5-15mm f/2.8-4.5 lens. The exact dimensions of the camera are not offered yet, but man do the lenses look small in that image. Apparently, in addition to this camera Pentax will also have an APS-C sensor mirrorless camera system that is larger than the tiny camera in the photo and will work with current K-mount lenses. That system is rumored for this summer.

Thanks Toby!

Pentax has announced the new second generation of its cool Optio RS1500 digital point and shoot camera. Pentax claims that the new RS1500 is infinitely customizable with interchangeable lens ring snaps and a removable faceplate system. The camera comes with a range of black snap rings and the camera can be customized in three steps with no tools needed.

The camera comes with a choice of ten skins. The user can also download the personal skin designer from Pentax and use the software to design and then print their own skin to their personal color printer. That means you can take the favorite pics you shoot with the RS1500 and use them as a skin for the camera if you want.

The RS1500 has a 14MP image sensor, a 3-inch rear LCD, and a 4x optical zoom lens. The lens covers 27.5mm to 110mm telephoto range. It is a small and compact camera at about the size of a credit card and can be had in pearl white or silver colors. The camera will ship in April for $149.95.

The Optio S1 has a high-resolution 14-megapixel sensor with a 5X optical zoom and a 2.7-inch display on the back. The high dynamic range mode overlays multiple shots to reduce the blown-out highlights and improve details in shadows. Other features include image stabilization, blink detection, and the ability to record 720p video. An IR remote for the camera is also available.

Shipments for the camera are due in April with a price tag of $200. There are three color styles to choose from: black with red accents, silver with black, and turquoise with silver.

Pentax has announced a pair of new ruggedized point and shoot digital cameras for the outdoors types that want to take pics, but need a camera that will survive use that would break a normal cam. The new cameras unveiled include the Optio WG-1 and the WG-1 GPS.

Both of the cameras have the same features with one difference. The GPS version has the ability to track and record positional data with the images. Common features include a 14MP sensor, waterproof to 14 feet, shockproof to survive falls from up to five feet, and a crushproof housing that can survive 220 pounds of force.

The WG-1 camera has a digital microscope mode that has five macro LEDs for lighting and a stand for steady image capture. They also have Face Detection, a self-portrait assist mode and more. The rugged design also makes them able to survive cold and resist dust. The lens is a 5x internal optical zoom unit and they can capture HD 720p video. The WG-1 will sell for $349.95 and the GPS version will go for $399.95 with both shipping in April.

LG will be giving G-Tablet buyers a pair of glasses so they can see the tablet’s 3D display; maybe Pentax should give K-r Bonnie Pink Model special edition buyers a pair of sunglasses to protect their eyes from the garish, clashing colors? Named after Japanese popstar Bonnie Pink, this new K-r limited edition DSLR is based on the same 12.4-megapixel camera as announced in September last year.

However, whereas the original came in a choice of white, black or red – still pretty exotic for a DSLR, it has to be said – this new version pushes the style envelope a little more (some might say past breaking point). It’s shipped with a matching DA L 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL Bonnie Pink Model lens, and the boot animation has been changed to the singer’s logo.

Pricing is $1,100, but you’ll need to be quick since only 100 of them will be on offer. Back in December 2010 Pentax released another limited edition K-r, that time with a robot theme.

The K-x is the long running entry-level DSLR from Pentax that comes in all sorts of wild colors and designs. The camera rarely gets and update with new features though.

Pentax has announced that a new firmware is available to download for the K-x that brings the camera to version 1.02. The big feature (and only new feature) that the new firmware brings to the mix is compatibility with SDXC cards. Pentax has also announced a new firmware for the K-7.

The firmware update for the K-7 brings the device to version 1.11 and it also adds support for SDXC memory cards. That is also the only new feature added for the K-7. The only downside to the support for SDXC is that neither camera supports the faster UHS speed class.

Pentax is tipped to be readying a pair of mirrorless camera technologies, one of which is being described as the digital version of the Pentax Auto 110. According to k-rumors, the new camera will feature a sensor that’s smaller in size than an APS-C sensor, set to arrive within the next 2-3 months.

The Auto 110 was an interchangeable lens camera that used a frame size very similar in scale to those current Micro Four Thirds cameras rely on, though there’s no indication in the rumors that Pentax plan to release a micro-4/3 model at this time. Similarly unknown is whether original Auto 110 lenses will work with the new, digital version.

As for the second mirrorless system, that’s expected to use an APS-C sized sensor and be announced in late 2011. Pentax enthusiasts are already arguing at the relative sense of the company developing a pair of new mirrorless systems and whether it would be practical or cost-effective; we’ll likely find out in the next few months.

Pentax has outed another in the company’s range of unusually colored DSLRs, this time a limited edition of 100 rainbow K-r cameras. Supposedly the result of customer demand, on the inside it’s the same 12.4-megapixel shooter previously offered in white, black and red, complete with a 3-inch 920k dot LCD display, 6fps shooting for up to 25 frames, in-camera HDR editing and a 100 – 25600 ISO range, but on the outside it’s an eye-catching (if not eye-watering) array of colors and a matching lens.

That lens, incidentally, is a PENTAX-DA 35mm F2.4 prime, though obviously you can use any existing sober black lenses you might already have. The odd head attached to the hot-shoe blocks the pop-up flash, Pentax warn, which seems a somewhat odd compromise to make in the name of style.

Still, we’re sure Pentax has done its sums and worked out that there are enough interested parties to account for the mere 100 units when they go on sale in early January 2011. Sticker price will be 99,800 yen ($1,203).

The bricks themselves aren’t actually LEGO, they’re Nanoblocks made by Japanese firm Diablock. Unfortunately they’re also incompatible with LEGO, which seems a shame, but considering Pentax include a template for you to cut out pictures and make RS1000 skins, you could always create your own LEGO version.

The Diablock version of the Optio RS1000 will be offered only in Japan, priced at around 20,000 yen ($239). It’ll go on sale later this year.

Press Release:

PENTAX ANNOUNCES THE INFINITELY CUSTOMIZABLE OPTIO RS1000 AND OPTIO RZ10 WITH 10X ZOOM

Golden, CO. (September 8, 2010)…Focused on the premise that photography is an extremely personal choice, PENTAX Imaging Company has announced two unique compact cameras that allow owners to be themselves.

The new PENTAX Optio RS1000 is easy to use and may be dressed to match the personality and style of its owner. This cosmetically customizable digital camera features a removable faceplate to hold interchangeable skins of any personal design.

1) Immediately dress the camera in a choice of 11 (three plus eight) standard skins that ship with the product.
This user-friendly mode instantly and reliably selects one of 16 shooting modes (eight conventional modes plus eight new modes including Blue Sky, Sunset and Pet) and optimizes various camera settings including sensitivity and shutter speed to assure the best results with minimal effort by the photographers.

Dual shake reduction to assure sharp, blur-free images
With a mechanical CCD-shift-type Shake Reduction (SR) mechanism and Pixel Track SR, the Optio RZ10’s dual shake reduction system minimizes camera shake and image blur more effectively to help ensure sharp images even during sunset, indoors without flash and when shooting with a telephoto lens.

High-quality, widescreen HD movie recording
Optio RZ10 users can enjoy high-quality movie shooting with minimal effort. The Optio RZ10 captures widescreen HD 720p movie clips (1280 x 720 pixels)* and comes equipped with the Movie SR (Shake Reduction) mode,** to automatically compensate for camera shake during movie shooting with the help of exclusive software.
* When the Optio RZ10’s AV output terminal is used, movie clips are output as normal image-size data. If the user wishes to play back movie clips at high-definition TV proportions (1280 x 720 pixels), the data must be transferred to a personal computer for playback.
** When the Movie SR mode is selected, the angle of view becomes narrower than normal shooting.

Automatic face detection for beautiful, lively snapshots
The Optio RZ10 features the sophisticated Face Detection AF & AE function. This instantly and accurately detects up to 32 faces within the image field, then catches them in sharp focus and in optimum exposure in as little as 0.03 seconds — even when heads are tilted or faces are angled slightly away from the camera. The Optio RZ10 also comes equipped with other convenient features to assist the photographer in capturing beautiful, lively snapshots. These include: Smile Capture that automatically releases the shutter the moment the camera detects the subject’s smile; and Blink Detection function that warns the photographer when the subject’s eyes close at the time of shutter release.

Unique Pet mode for automatic detection of dog and cat faces
The Optio RZ10 features an improved Pet mode, which comes in handy when taking pictures of dogs and cats. This upgraded function not only assures far greater accuracy in detecting three pre-registered faces of dogs and cats, but is also capable of automatically detecting unregistered faces of dogs and cats, unlike the previous function.

Casual, all-purpose design for every occasion
The Optio RZ10’s casual but stylish design makes it perfect to accompany its owner anywhere and on all occasions — on trips, for day-to-day snapshots, and at holiday events. It is designed to be functional and maneuverable, while meticulous attention has been given to every part of the camera body ergonomics, including: smoothly rounded edges; an easy-to-hold, rubber-coated grip; and a beautiful, lustrous alumite-finish black lens barrel. In addition to the standard color of chic black, the Optio RZ10 also comes in three vivid, lively colors designed to give it a sportier appearance.

Pentax has had its K-x entry-level DSLR camera on the market for a while now. Rather than revamping the camera to offer new features and things like better image quality the company is happy to toss new colors and wild special editions onto the market every now and again.

Pentax has added four new colors to its line of K-x offerings that include one retina searing pink version and a few more earthy tones. The other three are chocolate, beige, and olive. All of the new colors are available of the same $649.95 that the older models are offered at.

For that price, what you are getting is a kit with a DA L 18-55mm lens. If you want an additional lens, you can opt for the plain black for an extra $50 and get a 50-200mm zoom lens in addition to that 18-55mm unit. I’m still partial to the white K-x, but I’ll stick with my trusty D80.

As reasons for delaying a product launch go, overly “high demand” isn’t something you can complain too loudly about, but all the same we imagine there are some disappointed Japanese photography geeks out there right now. Pentax Japan have delayed the launch of their 645D medium format DSLR, claiming to have been surprised by the number of orders received; instead, the 645D will drop on June 11th.

The 645D has a 40-megapixel Kodak sourced sensor that, at 44 x 33 mm, is around 1.7x the size of the CCD you’d find in a regular DSLR. It’s designed for detail not speed; maximum capture rate is a frame per second, but Pentax expect it to be picked up by still life and scenery photographers.

To make up for the delay – or perhaps just taunt would-be owners a little more – the company has posted some example shots from the 645D on their site. Still no word on the possibility of a release outside of Japan.

Pentax’s huge medium-format 645D digital camera has had a public outing in Toronto this past weekend, demonstrating its updated Kodak 44 x 33 mm sensor – that has climbed from 30- to 40-mexapixels since we first saw the concept back in early 2009 – and general all-round awesomeness. Shooting a single frame per second, the Pentax 645D is apparently intended for scenery and other still-life photography, rather than anything faster moving. Scolirk grabbed some hands-on time and a demo video you can see after the cut.

Video demo after the cut

The reason for the massive bulk – aside from the huge sensor, which is apparently 1.7x the size of a regular DSLR CCD – is that the 645D can use film lenses. That opens up plenty of interesting possibilities for still-life photographers.

As for the 645D itself, Pentax have used roughly the same control layout as the K-7, together with that DSLR’s integrated HDR creation functions, and there’s a 3-inch LCD preview display with 170-degree viewing angles. Storage is via twin SDHC card slots, and there’s a new dust removal system. Expect it to arrive – and be expensive – by the end of 2010.

I can understand that camera makers want their new offerings to stand out in the crowd of cameras with basically the same features. However, Pentax is starting to take the brightly colored camera offerings to the extreme. Take the new Pentax K-x unveiled today that will be a Tower Records exclusive in Japan.

The camera is clad in just about every hue you would find inside a box of crayons. The rainbow effect is far from pleasing to most eyes and looks like a kid’s toy. If you thought the Korejani version we say back in October 2009 was ugly; it has nothing on the new rainbow version.

Other than the retina searing colors, the K-x is the same DSLR that Pentax has been peddling for a while now limited to a run of 1000 units. It will retail for the equivalent of $810 and won’t be offered outside of Japan. It has a 12.4MP sensor, 2.7-inch LCD, and 720p HD video recording.

Of Pentax’s most recent range of point-and-shoots, the Optio H90 particularly caught our eye with its vaguely 70s stylings. Over at PhotographyBLOG they’ve been putting the budget shooter through its paces, and it turns out to be surprisingly capable. Not only are its 12-megapixel stills decent, it has a broader focal range than similarly-priced rivals and can also record HD video.

That’s all squeezed into a smaller-than-average chassis which uses a Li-Ion battery rather than the more typical (for this point of the market) pair of AAs. PhotographyBLOG did have some issues with their review unit, which only managed around half the shots on a full battery that Pentax promise.

Nonetheless, it’s good enough overall for them to describe it as a “recession buster”, and if you’re in the market for a distinctive digicam that can fit neatly in your pocket then perhaps the H90 is it. The Pentax Optio H90 is available now, priced at around $179.95.

In fact, we talked about it almost exactly a year ago. The camera, presumably updated, was on display again at the Camera and Photo Imaging show in Yokohama City, Japan March 11 through the 14.

TechOn spent some time talking to the folks from Hoya behind the camera on how they were positioning the device. The camera uses an Eastman Kodak CCD with an imaging area 44 x 33mm. The camera will be released in Japan in May with a price equating to nearly $8900 here in the US.

The camera is designed specifically for talking high quality shots of scenery. The camera doesn’t use a lowpass filter and the question was posed during the interview of wouldn’t the lack of a filter cause moire. The reason for the lack of a filter according to the manufacturer is because the filter lowers resolution and the Moire can be removed using software.

We have already talked about the Pentax X90 megazoom digital camera this morning. Pentax also unveiled another new digital cam today in the Optio line called the W90. The Optio W90 is a ruggedized digital camera that can stand up to extreme use.

The W90 is a 12.1MP digital cam with a 5x optical zoom aimed at the user who likes to spend time outdoors and wants a camera with them that will survive skiing or other activities. The W90 can survive drops up to four feet and is waterproof to 20 feet.

That means the cam can be used for taking pics underwater. Temperatures under freezing won’t stop the W90 and the cam has Eye-Fi SD card connectivity. The rear LCD is a 2.7-inch unit and the camera can record 720p HD movies as well. HDMI out lets you send the movies to your big screen. The W90 will ship in April for $329.95 and Pentax will ship a waterproof remote compatible with the entire Optio line in April for $29.95.

There’s also a face recognition system that can spot up to 32 different faces in 0.03 seconds, even if they’re tilted or turned sideways, and adjust the autofocus and autoexposure, while there’s also the somewhat bizarre sounding “Small Face filter” “which makes the subject’s face appear slightly smaller than in reality.” We’re guessing that’s for those people paranoid they have fat heads.

Seven auto-picture modes, 720p HD video recording (with a micro-HDMI output) and a battery good for up to 255 shots on a single charge round out the main specs, and if you’re not feeling the zoom lens then there’s a 1cm macro mode for extreme close-ups of another kind. The press release lacks both a ship date and pricing, but over at Amazon the Pentax X90 is already listed for preorder at $399.95.

Pentax have outed a special, limited edition silver version of their K-7 DSLR, and it’s quite the looker. Like the original Pentax K-7 this new model has a 14.6-megapixel sensor, 1,536 x 1,024 30fps video recording and an HDMI output; it also gets an an exclusive “golden section ratio” focusing screen and a specially toughened glass cover for the LCD preview display.

That glass is both shock and scratch resistant; meanwhile inside the K-7 is running firmware version 1.03, which adds support for Pentax’s FA Limited interchangeable lens series. As a happy coincidence, they also match the limited edition silver housing.

Pentax will also throw in the latest version of their Digital Camera Utility 4 image processing app, and only 1,000 of the limited edition K-7′s will be made available. They’ll begin shipping in Japan on March 13th, priced at the equivalent of $1,420.

Here we go again with another SlashGear Week in Review. This was an important and busy week in the tech world with a much anticipated announcement by Apple in the middle of the week. There was some cool stuff unveiled early in the week too though. Monday we saw a cool custom wireless PS3 mod that took the new slim PS3 and turned it into a handheld device.

Pentax pulled the wraps off a couple new digi cams called the Optio I-10, H90, and E90. The cameras all had a very old school look to them even though they are all modern on the inside. The HP Slate landed on a video overview this week claiming that it was five years in the making. HP claims the device was ready to go two years about but would have cost about $1500 at the time.

Apple reported its Q1 profits this week and profit was up 50% on a huge surge. Sales of iPhones doubled and Mac sales were up 33%. Bowers & Wilkins updated its high-end 800 series speakers with diamond tweeters. You still can’t afford them at as much as $24,000 per pair.

Owners of 27-inch iMac computers reported this week that they were being told by AppleCare reps that a second fix for the screen flicker issue on the machines was incoming. The first fix issued for the flicker didn’t fix the problem. Belkin finally shipped the TuneCast Auto Live FM transmitter this week after showing it off last year. The device uses GPS to find a clear station in your area.

Windows Mobile 7 is apparently set for release at MWC 2010 with training for developers to start in March. The new version of the mobile OS has some ground it needs to make up, hope it’s good. The MSI Wind U135 debuted this week for $310 with Pine Trail power. The little netbook has a 10-inch screen and Windows 7.

Zvox updated three of its sound bars with digital audio inputs for better sound. Two of the devices are made for the TV to sit on and one is a traditional sound bar design. Wednesday was a big day in the tech world with the Apple event being held where the iPad was debuted. We were at the show and covered it with a liveblog.

ColorWare extended its custom paint option to the Google Nexus one smartphone this week. You can get your device colored for $175. There was lots of info on the iPad offered at the unveiling event. A bunch of video and other details were put together for perusal in a single post.

One of the most interesting things about the iPad was the impressive pricing on the data service for 3G models that Apple was able to get from AT&T. The plan requires no contract and the iPad is unlocked. The iPad was certainly the big announcement of the week and will probably be one of the biggest announcements this year. All the official details and specs are here.

ZAGG pulled the ZAGGsparq external battery out and showed it off this week. The little portable battery can recharge your iPhone four times. Along with the iPad hardware, Apple also showed off some cool accessories. Official pricing on the accessories was revealed Thursday.

A German company has been trying to get tech publications like SlashGear to stop using the term Smartbook by claiming that the term is trademarked. Qualcomm replied to the allegation this week saying that the term is a generic one and they are trying to get the German firm’s trademark revoked. We reviewed the Acer Aspire Z5600 AIO PC this week. We would have liked to see better graphics and Blu-ray, but the 23-inch machine was good.

Rumors turned up late in the week claiming that Nintendo had been offered an early version of the Project Natal tech Microsoft ultimately purchased. Nintendo is said to have passed because the tech was expensive. Sony has put its color eReader plans on hold for now. The reason is that the color version of e-paper lacks quality at this time.

Cypress Semiconductor showed off new multi-touch screen tech this week. The screen takes input from an unlimited number of fingers at once. Mitsubishi showed off a gigantic 149-inch OLED display this week. The thought of how much an OLED that size would cost is enough to make Bill Gates cry.

Amazon released its Q4 financials late in the week. The company still won’t say how many Kindles it has sold and as close as we are likely to get to real numbers is a statement by Amazon’s CEO claiming that “millions of people” own a Kindle. That’s all for this week thanks for reading!

We’ll never know whether Pentax intended to officially announce their three latest digital cameras today, or if they were pushed by yesterday’s leak, but in the end we’re just happy to see more details about the trio. The Pentax Optio I-10, Optio H90 and Optio E90 will all begin shipping next month, with the former two having a 12.1-megapixel sensors and 5x wide-angle optical zooms, while the latter – rocking the sub-$100 price point – gets 10-megapixels and a 3x wide-angle zoom.

The Pentax Optio I-10 represents the first of the company’s new I-series models, and puts point-and-shoot guts into a traditional SLR-shaped body. There’s a 2.7-inch LCD, flash and speaker, together with 720p 30fps HD video recording mode and mechanical anti-shake technology. Pentax have also developed a face-detection system that can recognize up to 32 faces, including those of dogs and cats.

As for the Pentax Optio H90, that has similar specifications to the I-10 but a smaller body, while the Pentax Optio E90 comes in at the budget end of things with a rubber-coated casing, AA battery compatibility and digital anti-shake tech. The Optio I-10 will be priced at $299.95, the Optio H90 at $179.95 and the Optio E90 at $99.95.
