We have already seen the Pentax 645D medium format DSLR camera before. In fact, we talked about it almost exactly a year ago. The camera, presumably updated, was on display again at the Camera and Photo Imaging show in Yokohama City, Japan March 11 through the 14.

TechOn spent some time talking to the folks from Hoya behind the camera on how they were positioning the device. The camera uses an Eastman Kodak CCD with an imaging area 44 x 33mm. The camera will be released in Japan in May with a price equating to nearly $8900 here in the US.

The camera is designed specifically for talking high quality shots of scenery. The camera doesn’t use a lowpass filter and the question was posed during the interview of wouldn’t the lack of a filter cause moire. The reason for the lack of a filter according to the manufacturer is because the filter lowers resolution and the Moire can be removed using software.

We have already talked about the Pentax X90 megazoom digital camera this morning. Pentax also unveiled another new digital cam today in the Optio line called the W90. The Optio W90 is a ruggedized digital camera that can stand up to extreme use.

The W90 is a 12.1MP digital cam with a 5x optical zoom aimed at the user who likes to spend time outdoors and wants a camera with them that will survive skiing or other activities. The W90 can survive drops up to four feet and is waterproof to 20 feet.

That means the cam can be used for taking pics underwater. Temperatures under freezing won’t stop the W90 and the cam has Eye-Fi SD card connectivity. The rear LCD is a 2.7-inch unit and the camera can record 720p HD movies as well. HDMI out lets you send the movies to your big screen. The W90 will ship in April for $329.95 and Pentax will ship a waterproof remote compatible with the entire Optio line in April for $29.95.

How much zoom is too much zoom? That’s something you’ll have to ask Pentax, whose new X90 camera – the successor to the Pentax X70 – boasts a 26x optical zoom and a special “Intelligent Zoom” feature that, they reckon, can extend it to 162.5x “without compromising the optical performance”. Behind that long-stretching lens there’s a 12.1-megapixel sensor and both optical and digital anti-shake systems.

There’s also a face recognition system that can spot up to 32 different faces in 0.03 seconds, even if they’re tilted or turned sideways, and adjust the autofocus and autoexposure, while there’s also the somewhat bizarre sounding “Small Face filter” “which makes the subject’s face appear slightly smaller than in reality.” We’re guessing that’s for those people paranoid they have fat heads.

Seven auto-picture modes, 720p HD video recording (with a micro-HDMI output) and a battery good for up to 255 shots on a single charge round out the main specs, and if you’re not feeling the zoom lens then there’s a 1cm macro mode for extreme close-ups of another kind. The press release lacks both a ship date and pricing, but over at Amazon the Pentax X90 is already listed for preorder at $399.95.

Pentax have outed a special, limited edition silver version of their K-7 DSLR, and it’s quite the looker. Like the original Pentax K-7 this new model has a 14.6-megapixel sensor, 1,536 x 1,024 30fps video recording and an HDMI output; it also gets an an exclusive “golden section ratio” focusing screen and a specially toughened glass cover for the LCD preview display.

That glass is both shock and scratch resistant; meanwhile inside the K-7 is running firmware version 1.03, which adds support for Pentax’s FA Limited interchangeable lens series. As a happy coincidence, they also match the limited edition silver housing.

Pentax will also throw in the latest version of their Digital Camera Utility 4 image processing app, and only 1,000 of the limited edition K-7’s will be made available. They’ll begin shipping in Japan on March 13th, priced at the equivalent of $1,420.

Here we go again with another SlashGear Week in Review. This was an important and busy week in the tech world with a much anticipated announcement by Apple in the middle of the week. There was some cool stuff unveiled early in the week too though. Monday we saw a cool custom wireless PS3 mod that took the new slim PS3 and turned it into a handheld device.

Pentax pulled the wraps off a couple new digi cams called the Optio I-10, H90, and E90. The cameras all had a very old school look to them even though they are all modern on the inside. The HP Slate landed on a video overview this week claiming that it was five years in the making. HP claims the device was ready to go two years about but would have cost about $1500 at the time.

Apple reported its Q1 profits this week and profit was up 50% on a huge surge. Sales of iPhones doubled and Mac sales were up 33%. Bowers & Wilkins updated its high-end 800 series speakers with diamond tweeters. You still can’t afford them at as much as $24,000 per pair.

Owners of 27-inch iMac computers reported this week that they were being told by AppleCare reps that a second fix for the screen flicker issue on the machines was incoming. The first fix issued for the flicker didn’t fix the problem. Belkin finally shipped the TuneCast Auto Live FM transmitter this week after showing it off last year. The device uses GPS to find a clear station in your area.

Windows Mobile 7 is apparently set for release at MWC 2010 with training for developers to start in March. The new version of the mobile OS has some ground it needs to make up, hope it’s good. The MSI Wind U135 debuted this week for $310 with Pine Trail power. The little netbook has a 10-inch screen and Windows 7.

Zvox updated three of its sound bars with digital audio inputs for better sound. Two of the devices are made for the TV to sit on and one is a traditional sound bar design. Wednesday was a big day in the tech world with the Apple event being held where the iPad was debuted. We were at the show and covered it with a liveblog.

ColorWare extended its custom paint option to the Google Nexus one smartphone this week. You can get your device colored for $175. There was lots of info on the iPad offered at the unveiling event. A bunch of video and other details were put together for perusal in a single post.

One of the most interesting things about the iPad was the impressive pricing on the data service for 3G models that Apple was able to get from AT&T. The plan requires no contract and the iPad is unlocked. The iPad was certainly the big announcement of the week and will probably be one of the biggest announcements this year. All the official details and specs are here.

ZAGG pulled the ZAGGsparq external battery out and showed it off this week. The little portable battery can recharge your iPhone four times. Along with the iPad hardware, Apple also showed off some cool accessories. Official pricing on the accessories was revealed Thursday.

A German company has been trying to get tech publications like SlashGear to stop using the term Smartbook by claiming that the term is trademarked. Qualcomm replied to the allegation this week saying that the term is a generic one and they are trying to get the German firm’s trademark revoked. We reviewed the Acer Aspire Z5600 AIO PC this week. We would have liked to see better graphics and Blu-ray, but the 23-inch machine was good.

Rumors turned up late in the week claiming that Nintendo had been offered an early version of the Project Natal tech Microsoft ultimately purchased. Nintendo is said to have passed because the tech was expensive. Sony has put its color eReader plans on hold for now. The reason is that the color version of e-paper lacks quality at this time.

Cypress Semiconductor showed off new multi-touch screen tech this week. The screen takes input from an unlimited number of fingers at once. Mitsubishi showed off a gigantic 149-inch OLED display this week. The thought of how much an OLED that size would cost is enough to make Bill Gates cry.

Amazon released its Q4 financials late in the week. The company still won’t say how many Kindles it has sold and as close as we are likely to get to real numbers is a statement by Amazon’s CEO claiming that “millions of people” own a Kindle. That’s all for this week thanks for reading!

Thinking of treating yourself to a new digital camera? Pentax aren’t really ready to show you there latest models, but a premature leak has outed the Optio I-10, H90 and E90 digicams. Most interesting is the Optio I-10, a 12.1-megapixel retro shooter with a 5x wide-angle optical zoom.

Then there’s the similarly-retro Optio H90, which gets a 5x zoom too along with some seriously 80s styling, while the runner-up is the far more pedestrian Optio E90. The latter has a 10.1-megapixel sensor and 3x optical zoom.

Still unclear is any sort of pricing, full spec sheets and release dates, but we’re guessing that if Pentax are slinging around press shots like these then they must be ramping up to their release. Perhaps something we’ll see get official at PMA 2010 next month, along with the Sony DSC-TX5 waterproof point-and-shoot?

Pentax has offered up a new and very colorful version of the Pentax K-x DSLR called the Korejanai K-x that outfitted in bright basic colors of red, blue, yellow, and white.

The camera is modeled after the Korejanai Robots and ships with a matching bot as well. The camera even has a robot face printed on the pop-up flash making this possibly the geekiest camera ever unveiled. If you are all excited and want one of these for your own there is a catch.

The camera is only available in Japan for the equivalent of $880. The camera is identical in all other features to the version we can get in America. Namely, you get 12.4MP resolution, 2.7-inch rear LCD, 720p HD video capability, and an 18 to 55mm lens.

The SlashGear team have been surprisingly mobile this week, with part one of our Lincoln MKS road-test, and toting Sprint’s version of the MiFi 2200 portable EVDO hotspot around. We still found enough time to get frantically excited about the Palm Pre, though, which we now know will launch on June 6th for $199.99.

That excitement is tempered with the ongoing rumors that stocks may be severely curtailed on launch day. Not only have Best Buy and RadioShack insiders been talking of minimal handset numbers come June 6th, Sprint’s own CEO is warning that the Pre will likely be in short supply for the first couple of months. The concern is that all of Palm’s momentum since CES back in January could fizzle out, as Apple are expected to announce a third-generation iPhone two days after the Pre’s launch.

Elsewhere in the Apple ecosystem, notorious analyst Gene Munster pooh-pooh’d talk of an Apple Media Pad anytime before 2010. That leaves the stage free for some less impressive, but undoubtedly less expensive alternatives, and the best are coming from little-known names in the Far East. SmartQ’s 7 MID has a bargain $189 sticker and we saw the first unit unboxed earlier this week, while Korean firm mintpass are talking about their second-gen mintpad. Slightly closer to launch, Archos are expected to announce their Android 3G PMP/MID on June 11th.

If something larger, with a full hardware keyboard, is your preference, then we’ve seen a few interesting netbooks this week. Dell’s Latitude 2100 has a serious education bent to it, but could still find favor with mainstream buyers, while ASUS did their best to swell Eee PC ranks with the 1005HA and 1000HV, the latter toting a discrete ATI Radeon graphics chipset.

Finally, Pentax’s K-7 DSLR finished lurking about in the shadows and instead got all official, while Google pushed out v2 of their Chrome browser. Plus we unboxed and brought you a video demo of the BenQ Joybee GP1 pocket-projector; slightly bigger than a pico-projector, but promising higher quality along with the extra size. We’ll tell you whether it lives up to the promise in the full review this week.

As promised, Pentax have unleashed their latest DSLR, the 14.6-megapixel K-7. Pairing the new CMOS with the PRIME II imaging engine, the K-7 is also the first of the company’s DSLRs to support high-definition video recording. Where many rivals top out at 720p, the Pentax can climb all the way to 1,536 x 1,024 at 30fps (3:2 aspect; 16:9 720p is also supported), and has an HDMI output for easy viewing.

Video demo after the cut

The 3-inch 921,000 pixel resolution LCD supports Live View and there’s a new composition adjustment feature which allows for minor shifts in framing without actually moving the DSLR itself; instead, the Shake Reduction mechanism is used to tweak the composition. Pentax have also thrown in a dedicated AF-assist lamp, electronic level and in-camera lens correction that can adjust for distortion and lateral chromatic aberrations when used with DA series lenses.

Perhaps most impressive, though, is the High Dynamic Range mode, which snaps three images one after the other and then automatically combines them so as to widen the exposure gamut and highlight detail across the frame. There’s also 5.2fps shooting, 1/8000 sec shutter speed and 11-point autofocus, plus weather, dust and cold-resistance.

The Pentax K-7 DSLR will ship in July, priced at $1,299.95 for the body alone. Meanwhile the D-BG4 battery grip (which doubles runtime with its rechargeable Li-Ion battery, or can alternatively use 6 AA batteries) will retail for $229.95. Pentax also have a range of weather-resistant lenses – the smc DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL WR and the smc DA 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED WR – which will retail for $199.95 and $249.95 respectively.

Press Release:

PENTAX INTRODUCES ADVANCED PENTAX K-7 DIGITAL SLR

New Camera Boasts Variety of Technological Firsts and Major Improvements Over Previous K Series Cameras

GOLDEN, CO. (May 20, 2009)…PENTAX Imaging Company announced today the launch of the PENTAX K-7 digital SLR camera. This latest PENTAX K series camera is designed for advanced photographers seeking high-end design and features without the cost of a professional DSLR system. The PENTAX K-7 features a rugged, yet compact new body design, a new 14.6 megapixel CMOS sensor rebuilt from the ground up, and advanced features such as HD Movie Capture and new, unique-to-PENTAX camera controls. Compatible with every PENTAX lens ever made, the high-end K-7 features an abundance of long-anticipated new and improved features that are exclusive to the camera and combine to make it a tremendous photography tool.

“The K-7 will appeal to many current PENTAX SLR photographers who have been asking for more advanced features, but in a smaller, solid, comfortable-to-hold body,” said Ned Bunnell, president, PENTAX Imaging Company. “We also believe the combination of the K-7’s smaller, high quality construction coupled with the growing line-up of our Limited compact prime lenses will appeal to serious shooters who currently don’t own or previously hadn’t considered adding a PENTAX to their camera bag.”

The most significant features of the PENTAX K-7 that have never been offered before in any K series digital camera, and in some cases any camera, include:

• A compact, magnesium alloy body that is one of the smallest in the advanced photo enthusiast category to reduce bulk and allow users to travel light while maintaining durability and build quality (seven percent smaller than the K20D and up to 25 percent smaller than other cameras in the same class).
• A new 14.6 megapixel CMOS sensor rebuilt from the ground up to minimize noise, adds four channel output for fast image capture, and the ability to capture HD quality movies. It is the ideal combination of resolution and file size, allowing very large (poster size and larger) prints and cropping flexibility.
• A new 77-segment metering system quickly and accurately determines exposure for even the most complex and dynamic lighting situations.
• HD Movie capture features adjustable quality and resolution settings, aperture control, as well as mechanical Shake Reduction, and an external microphone terminal for recording stereo sound.* The K-7 will capture video at the default standard of 1280×720 resolution with a 16:9 aspect ratio (equivalent to 720p), 1536×1024 resolution with a 3:2 aspect ratio, or 640×416 resolution with a 3:2 aspect ratio (equivalent to VGA quality), all shot at 30 frames per second.
• An HDMI port with selectable output resolution (1080i, 720p, 480p, and auto) offers high resolution playback of images and video on modern high definition TV’s.
• A Dedicated AF-assist lamp further improves autofocus response and accuracy in low light conditions.
• An Electronic Level function ensures that images have truly level horizons to minimize post-capture editing.
• An innovative in-camera Lens Correction function that electronically adjusts for Distortion and Lateral Chromatic Aberrations to maximize image quality with DA series lenses.
• A dedicated Mirror Lock-up function eliminates image blur due to mirror movement during long exposures.
• A High Dynamic Range (HDR) image capture mode captures three images then combines them in camera to widen the exposure gamut to bring out detail in all exposure areas of images.
• A composition adjustment feature in Live View allows minor shifts in the framing and composition of images using the Shake Reduction mechanism without having to physically move the camera. This feature is ideal for tripod use.
• A programmable embedded copyright function preserves artistic integrity and image ownership during capture via a keypad that may record ownership in metatag data.

*Due to the compact size of the K-7 camera and the in-body Shake Reduction mechanism, a camera mounted microphone is a highly recommended accessory for optimal audio quality when capturing video.

A variety of K series camera features that are significantly improved in the PENTAX K-7 include:

• A striking 3 inch LCD with 921,000 dot resolution is perfect for detailed image or movie capture and review using the Live View function.
• A weather, dust and cold resistant (to 14° F or -10° C) body makes the K-7 the perfect camera for use in any environment, inside the studio or when travelling in any weather.
• Fast 5.2 frame-per-second shooting with a new PRIME II Image processing engine, which features fast circuitry and 4 channel output that is ideal for sporting events or any fast action situation.
• A top shutter speed of 1/8000 sec freezes even the fastest action in well lit settings.
• Live View mode, now with contrast AF, Face Detection, and optional histogram, grid, and bright/dark area display, allows you to quickly compose your images without having your eye against the viewfinder.
• A 100 percent field-of-view viewfinder (92X magnification) and bright focusing screen are ideal for accurate image composition and accurate focus.
• The PENTAX 11-point autofocus system features improved focus algorithms over previous generation K series DSLR cameras, providing faster, more responsive AF.
• The PENTAX-original Shake Reduction system now compensates for rotational sensor movement improving the sharpness of your images at the moment of capture.
• The K-7’s Dust Reduction system, improved over previous K series cameras, features a piezo-ceramic vibration action to the sensor’s low-pass filter for dust-fee image capture.
• A new high capacity battery features extended battery life, ideal for travel photography or video work.
• Advanced image capture settings, digital filters, and aspect ratio provide outstanding flexibility and creativity while minimizing the need for computer image manipulation.
• Custom Image modes with advanced parameter settings including new Key adjustment allow users to customize the processing mode to suit personal creative style.

Other K series innovations featured on the PENTAX K-7 include:
• Multiple exposure settings, including Green, Program, Sv, Tv, Av, TAv, M, Bulb, X-sync, and USER modes, provide extensive creative control over the exposure for photographers of all experience levels.
• Advanced white balance settings include highly customizable white balance fine tuning, color temperature adjustment, and post image capture manual white balance selection for perfect pictures in even the most difficult lighting.
• Dynamic Range setting with adjustable shadow correction brings out hidden or lost details in both highlights and shadows for even the highest-contrast, dynamic lighting.
• Dedicated PC socket for studio flash offers convenience for the studio photographer without adding hot shoe adapters.
• Advanced capture options include multi-exposure and interval shooting for creative special effects and time-lapse photography.

Along with the body, PENTAX announced a D-BG4 battery grip for exclusive use with the PENTAX K-7. This battery grip may be used in combination with the camera’s rechargeable lithium-ion battery to double camera’s battery life. The D-BG4 also accepts 6 AA batteries in a alternate battery tray for added freedom when shooting in the field. With a vertical shutter-release button, e-dials, AE-lock and a new focus button, the grip features the same weather-resistance, dustproof and coldproof construction as the PENTAX K-7.

PENTAX also announced two weather-resistant lens models developed specifically for PENTAX digital SLRs. The smc DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL WR and the smc DA 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED WR kit lenses feature weather-resistant seals to handle damp, inclement conditions. Complementing K series camera bodies, both lenses blend versatility with affordability, giving the casual photographer a broader canvas without having to carry a multitude of lenses.

The PENTAX K-7 body only will ship in July 2009 for $1,299.95 USD. The PENTAX D-BG4 battery grip also will ship in July 2009 for $229.95. The newest weather-resistant lenses will be priced at $199.95 for the DA 18-55mm and $249.95 for the DA 50-200mm. These products also will ship in July 2009.

After the official press shots yesterday, now come the images of the Pentax K-7 DSLR in the wild. Over at Pentax-Fans.com they’ve somehow scored a K-7 ahead of the launch tipped to take place in around two hours time. Their hands-on confirms the 14.6-megapixel sensor and PRIME II imaging engine, together with HD video recording at up to 1080i/720p resolution.

They also have shots of the main menu functionality, including copyright auto-embedding, the various AF modes such as face-detection, and even a new battery-type selection menu. The K-7 is capable of 5.2 frames per second continuous shooting, plus there’s a new 77-Segment Multi-Pattern metering system, face recognition, contrast-detection AF and a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000th of a second.

So far unexplained settings include “Movie Info Overlay”, which seems to imply on-screen legends for HD video recording, and “HDR Capture”, which isn’t functional in their early firmware (0.2) version. Still, we should know all about it very soon; the Pentax K-7 DSLR is expected to be announced at 10am EST today.

[Thanks Bradley D.!]

Photos and a specifications list for the Pentax K-7 have turned up at one enthusiast’s site, and while unconfirmed by Pentax themselves they do seem believable. The leak follows an advert for the camera that showed up yesterday, seemingly scooping Pentax’s own teaser campaign.

More photos and specifications after the cut

If the leaked specifications are to be believed, the Pentax K-7 has a 14.6-megapixel sensor paired with the PRIME II imaging engine, capable of 5.2 frames per second continuous shooting. There’s also a new 77-Segment Multi-Pattern metering system, face recognition, contrast-detection AF and a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000th of a second.

On the back there’s a 3-inch 640 x 480 preview monitor, up top a pop-up flash and Pentax will supposedly be offering a vertical battery grip, model D-BG4, which adds power and is – like the K-7 itself – weather-sealed and cold-resistant. Still no word on price, but with the official launch only days away, we should find that out soon enough.

[Thanks Andrew!]

It looks like Pentax is having a little bit of fun with the public at large. Even though rumors have already been circulating about a possible new camera from the company in the U.S., they’re now just offering a teaser on their website, stating that “the new K” will arrive on May 20th.

Now, “the new K” refers to the K-series of digital SLRs offeried by Pentax. Other than a date for the big reveal, we don’t know much. The top of the camera is shown, so we can gather a flash hot shoe will be a feature, but that’s about it.

Apparently, a similar teaser effort was completed in Japan for the big reveal of the K7D, so many are thinking it will be this same camera that hits the U.S. And this would be a big deal because the K7D is very high-end and would offer burst shooting, a 1/8,000 shutter speed and a new autofocusing function.

Pentax released more details on several of their products today. First up is the Pentax 645 Digital. It was first previewed in 2007, but now we’re finally getting closer to a release, it seems. This camera is a monster with 30-megapixels! It is also expected to handle film-based 645 lenses, have a full-view eyepiece and more.

We won’t see the 645 Digital until sometime in 2010, but a prototype is set to be debuted at the Photo Imaging Expo later this month. But a brand new product isn’t all Pentax has been up to. They are now also offering the 14.6-megapixel K20D in a Titanium version. It comes with a matching battery grip. You’ll be able to get it in Japan for the equivalent of $1,021 by the end of April.

The K2000 has gotten an exterior upgrade, as well. It now sports an olive green color with orange highlights. This is an economy model with 10.2-megapixels. You’ll be able to get your hands on it by the end of April for the equivalent of $716.

As busy weeks go, this one has certainly been something to write home about (or at least a Week in Review about), with CeBIT, PMA and an Apple mega-announcement all taking place. ASUS arguably stole the former show in Germany, with the Eee PC 1008HA “Shell” once again proving that netbooks needn’t be the ugly cousins to expensive ultraportable notebooks. For our full CeBIT 2009 coverage, hit the tag.

Turning to PMA 2009, SlashGear’s resident photography genius Daniel Lim picked out the latest and most interesting from the US show. You can find all the announcements and content with the PMA tag, but highlights include our exclusive Lensbaby 0.42x Super-Wide Lens and Composer demos, sample shots and video demos of Panasonic’s Micro 4/3 DMC-GH1, hands-on time with the JVC “Everio X” GZ-X900 1080p camcorder, and sneak-peeks at Pentax’s X70 and the eminently-interesting Samsung NX hybrid DSLR.

It’s a hard week to grab headlines in, but Apple managed it with not one or two but five products in their range getting significant changes. The Mac Pro, Mac mini and iMac all came in for some upgrade attention, while the Time Machine backup system and AirPort Extreme Base Station both got a shot of simultaneous dual-band capabilities, among other things. That makes for a great week for Cupertino, only marred by the news that more than a few 17-inch MacBook Pro owners are experiencing ongoing visual problems with their new unibody notebooks, possibly due to overheating.

We’ve also had time for a couple of reviews and a video unboxing, with Clickfree’s HD325 and Transformer backup systems showing that safeguarding data needn’t be a headache, while the Pixelar E-Reader demonstrated that reading ebooks off a screen needn’t, well, be a headache either. Finally we unboxed the Sleek Audio Customs, a $300 set of custom-molded earphones that have a lot riding on them. Look out for our review this coming week.

PMA 2009

My first stop at PMA 2009 Sneak Peek Luncheon was Pentax booth, I knew something was up when a small group Japanese reporters gathered at the rather disappointing pre show event. I was told to return couple hours later, and there it was. Empty spots now filled two new bodies, not the new hybrid standard I was hoping for, but a 12Mp ultra zoom with 24x optics dubbed X70. It drew crowd nevertheless, and the show actually peaked for a minute there.

Other than the typical 24x mega optics and a reasonable 2.7-inch LCD, the Pentax X70 is also capable of capturing 720p movies at reduced 15fps, or WVGA at 30fps. Physically, the Pentax is probably the smallest and lightest ultra zoom we’ve seen and the chassis is slightly flimsy.

With Pentax on broad, the Super Zoom market is now slightly crowded with three manufacturers offering the 12Mp and 24x optics; the Nikon P90 packs 3-inch tilting LCD and shoot VGA movies; while both the Kodak’s 980 and Pentax X70 record 720P movies with fixed LCD. Those are the new comers with suggested retail price of $399. Olympus also has a similar class digicam launched at CES 2009; the SP-590Z features 12MP image sensor, records VGA video but is optically superior among the group with longest tele-end reaches 676mm (35mm equiv).

PENTAX X70 FACT SHEET

Versatile 24X optical Megazoom lens accommodates a range of subjects
Within a compact, lightweight body, the X70 features a high magnification optical 24X zoom lens offering a focal-length coverage between a wide-angle 26mm to a super telephoto 624mm (in the 35mm format). This is ideal for wide-angle scenic shots or group photos, as well as getting closer to the action at a sporting event. Coupled with the Intelligent Zoom function, the X70 zoom range may be extended to approximately 150 times (for a focal length of an astonishing approximately 3900mm in the 35mm format) without compromising the optical performance of the zoom lens.

High image quality
With 12.0 megapixels, a high-performance imaging engine, and the high quality PENTAX Megazoom lens, the X70 delivers super clear, high quality images in any shooting mode. Images at 12.0 megapixels are also suitable for printing at most large print sizes including 8×10, 11×17 and even larger poster size prints.

Large, easy-to-view 2.7 inch color LCD monitor
The PENTAX X70 features a large, bright 2.7 inch color LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 dots of resolution. An Anti-Reflection coating helps minimize glare from sunlight for more effective outdoor viewing. Also, the X70 comes with an electronic viewfinder for easy image composition and review in the brightest lighting conditions. You can also access the camera’s menus and other functions via the electronic viewfinder, so you will always be able to change settings no matter how bright it is outdoors.

Compact, lightweight design
The compact, lightweight design of the X70, one of the smallest and lightest cameras in it’s class, make it easy to transport and use. However, the small size does not mean features are compromised. The X70 includes a full range of automatic and manual features and functions.

Reliable Shake Reduction for sharp, blur-free images
The X70 incorporates an “image sensor shift” Shake Reduction system to assure sharply focused, blur-free images even under demanding photographic conditions such as when shooting at full telephoto or when shooting a sunset or indoor scenes with very low light. By accurately detecting the amount of camera shake using a high-performance gyro sensor and shifting the CCD image sensor vertically and horizontally at high speed, the X70 offers an outstanding camera-shake compensation effect, equivalent to approximately three shutter steps.

High-speed Continuous Shooting mode to capture the decisive moment
The X70 lets the photographer capture the subject continuously at a maximum speed of approximately 11 images per second and up to 21 images in succession.* Coupled with the Auto-Tracking AF mode that keeps a fast-moving subject in focus all the time, the X70 is sure to capture that once in a lifetime, decisive moment in sharp focus. The X70 is perfect for shooting sports action and active children and pets.
* When the continuous-shooting mode is selected, the image size is fixed at 5M (2592 x 1944 pixels).

Fast Face Detection AF&AE captures up to 32 faces in focus in approx. 0.03 seconds
The X70 Face Detection function is effective for capturing casual snapshots of people by optimizing the focusing and exposure of up to 32 faces in a single image in approximately 0.03 seconds. The X70 also offers other user-friendly functions including Smile Capture which automatically releases the shutter the instant it detects the subject’s smile, and Blink Detection which warns the photographer when the subject’s eyes are closed at the moment of capture.

Movie capture in high-definition TV image quality with anti-shake protection
The X70 captures high quality movie clips, equivalent in image quality to that of high-definition TV (1280 x 720 pixels) at 15 frames per second. The X70 also features Movie SR mode,** which effectively minimizes annoying camera shake during movie capture. The X70 can also record video at 848×480, VGA and QVGA resolutions at 30 frames per second, for full video capture flexibility. As a result, the photographer enjoys high-quality, blur-free movie shooting with minimal effort.
** When the Movie SR mode is selected, the angle of view becomes narrower than normal shooting.

PENTAX X70 FACT SHEET (cont)

Multi-mode exposure system
The X70 offers a choice of four exposure modes: Programmed AE, in which the camera automatically selects the optimal combination of aperture and shutter speed for a given subject and Aperture Priority AE, Shutter Priority AE and full Metered Manual modes, in which photographers are free to select either (or both) aperture and shutter speed to suit their photographic needs.

Auto Picture mode for the automatic selection of seven different shooting modes
The X70 features the advanced PENTAX Auto Picture mode, which automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode for a given subject or scene by detecting the subject’s lighting, movement and other conditions. This user-friendly mode not only makes the right mode choice for the photographer (from Landscape, Portrait, Night Scene, Night Scene Portrait, Flower, Sport and Standard modes), but also features an Auto Macro mode, which automatically switches the camera’s focus range to macro in close-range applications.

Auto sensitivity control up to a high ISO of 6400
The X70 comes equipped with an Auto Sensitivity Control function, which automatically shifts the sensitivity level in relation to the subject’s lighting condition and the lens focal-length setting. This allows the photographer to use a high shutter speed in dimly lit locations, such as night scenes or indoor sports events to effectively minimize camera shake and subject blur. The auto sensitivity control range can be set between ISO 50 and ISO 6400, and is range adjustable.

Additional Features
•	Image Format Choice proportions of 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 or 1:1.
•	Scene mode palette for easy selection from 20 scenes, including a new Baby mode for accurate exposure and skin tones when taking pictures of babies.
•	Overexposure compensation function to prevent blown out (or clipped) highlights.
•	A Super Macro mode may be used to shoot as close as 0.4 inches (one centimeter) away from a subject for stunning close-up details.
•	Digital Wide mode quickly stitches 2 images together for an extra wide-angle image (equivalent to 20mm in the 35mm format).
•	World time clock displays standard time in 75 cities in 28 time zones around the world for extra convenience when on the road.
•	Frame Composite mode (with 90 built-in image frames) offers fun and creative ways to style up your shots.
•	Approximately 33.6MB of built-in memory. Also compatible with SD and SDHC memory cards.
•	Red-eye reduction function corrects for red eyes as the result of flash photography. Red-eye reduction can be applied during capture, or as a post-capture filter.

A white finish DSLR is not my favorite cup of tea, though I do own a few white optics from Canon, but I can’t say the same for millions other Pentax photographers, or it’s only thousands left these days? Back in December, Pentax surprised the photography communities with the announcement of a white-alternate K2000 bundled with two zoom lenses kit, but left the guessing works on pricing information; today, they have made it available.

Creative or when Marketing goes wrong? Pentax shows the holiday spirit, announces a limited-release of a White Christmas version Pentax K2000. Wrapped in a brilliant white body with black trims, the K2000 kit is available in a bundle kit with two-zoom lens (Pentax DA L 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL and Pentax DA L 50-200mm F4-5.6 AL). Camera specification remains the same except for the body finish.

Perhaps it is stylish in the eyes of Mac lover with the usual brilliant white finish. I’m no judge of style, but don’t you think that white color shows wears and tears from normal usage than the traditional black? The limited edition white Pentax K2000 kit will be available on a very limited basis in February 2009 at a price to be announced. (current production of regular K2000 with 18-55mm kit is selling at $600).

Rumors are circulating that Pentax are preparing to announce a GPS-enabled version of their K20D DSLR. Greek site FullHD have published details from what they claim to be a leaked press release, officially expected later on today; the K20D is a 14.6-megapixel waterproof camera and, with the GPS accessory, would be able to automatically geotag each image taken.

Other than the new GPS accessory – which is believed to be a separate part to the DSLR itself, rather than integrated into the body of the camera – the K20D would remain unchanged. That means a stainless steel chassis with dust and water resistance, a 2.7-inch display with Live View, and an expanded dynamic range function.

The K20D can be found for sale in the $700-800 range, body only, a significant drop from its $1,200 launch price back in April. It’s unclear how much the kit consisting of the DSLR body and GPS adapter would cost, but it’s expected to be around the $1,000 mark.

Pentax has been teasing its medium format fans, showcasing an 18 megapixels prototype then another 31.6 megapixel digital CCD medium format sensor since the introduction of digital version of medium format 645 back in 2005, but none of them ever made it to prime time.

News from the Far East is they are pulling 645 out of its original plan. The development on digital series of 645 including the interchangeable lens will be halted and concentrated on the K-series DLSR instead. The decision doesn’t affect current production of 645N or 67 II, the medium format film cameras.

Competing in the cutthroat Digital SLR market if you don’t have lens selection with the size of Amazon’s tropical forest like Nikon or Canon. Having the state of art body isn’t going to sell unless you have full line-up of lens from amateur to professional market. Pentax brought us their newly K20D body yesterday together with 5 new smc PENTAX-DA Lens ranges from a prime Tele to wide angle, I say that’s quite an announcement from them!

The first two fast primes are both mid-range 200mm and 300mm, it’s also the only two in new series to get smc PENTAX-DA* , pronounced (star). It’s Pentax’s trademark of high performance Digital SLR lens with Special optical glass including ED glass elements, aspherical lens elements with premium lens coating to capture image with improved contrast, sharpness and detail.

The smc PENTAX-DA* 300 mm F4ED [IF] SDM has an aperture range of F4 to F32, with 8 elements in 6 groups design. It’s weather sealed, features Supersonic Motor, Quick-Shirt Focus, Super Protect Coating and comes with a detachable tripod mount. The 1070g telephoto lens has filter size of 77mm and will be released around May with MSRP price of $1,299

The smc PENTAX-DA* 200 mm F2.8ED [IF] SDM prime is one stop faster than the 300mm with aperture range from F2.8 to F22. It has 9 elements in 8 groups construction with similar advance features like the 300mm. Its weights at 825g with filter size of 77mm and will be released around March with MSRP price of $1,099

The last prime is a wide angle macro lens, smc PENTAX-DA35 mm F2.8-F22 Macro. It features a quick-shift focus system and super coating with 9 elements in 8 groups design. The light weight macro is barely scale at 215g with 49mm filter size. It will be released around April for $599.

Last two releases are both zoom lens with range from 18-55mm to 55-300mm. The smc PENTAX-DA 18-55 mm F3.5-5.6AL II shares a few similar features like smc PENTAX-DA 55-300 mm F4-5.8ED . The wider zoom will be included in a kit with Pentax’s new K200D SLR camera while the mid-to-tele zoom will be available in May for $400.

Check out this nifty little attachment from Loreo, you can get it for your Canon EOS and FD models, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax K mount, and Minolta MD and AF models and it allows you to take 3D photos. Basically it splits the image from each side and allows the camera to capture both, the only downside is, it slows the f-stop rating down to 11.

But, what do you expect for something that has to capture twice the image? Both lenses are adjusted automatically to capture the 3D effect of the image, which, once captured, can be viewed on a 3D image viewer or on a PC with the included software from Loreo, you can also make prints.

Inside, there are two lenses with the focal length of 38mm. Those two lenses can focus from 1 meter to infinity. In case you are familiar with 3D picture taking technology, this is the same stuff that was used in the 60’s by sci-fi drive-in cameramen.
