Pebble Steel hands-on: The smartwatch goes classy

New year, new Pebble, and the smartwatch company that took Kickstarter by storm has cooked up a second model, the Pebble Steel, to continue its assault on the wearables space. Pebble Education Project brings 4,000 smartwatches to schools

The creators of the smartwatch known as Pebble have let loose information on an education program they're running that'll have 4,000 Pebble watches put on the wrists of engineering and CS students across the country. This Pebble Education Project will be working with seven schools from the start, bringing on full release-era Pebble watches to students of MIT, CMU, VT, and more. This education push is aiming to bring a rather simple yet powerful tool to the hands of students that'll be able to use them to great effect.

Pebble users are getting a bit of an early Christmas gift, with the company announcing the latest firmware release: version 1.14. The update runs the gamut of changes -- new features, fixed bugs, and some improvements in general -- among them being some handy functions like "Do Not Disturb" and a "Snooze Alarm" option. These updates for the watch and the iPhone bring the Pebble environment up to the place that was explained earlier this month, full iOS 7 notifications and all. Users will be able to receive notifications from this point forward from Facebook, Google+, Flickr, Flipboard, and more, straight through Pebble’s full integration with Notification Center in iOS 7.

Pebble update brings full iOS 7 notifications; SDK 2.0 ready to roll

The smartwatch known as Pebble is seeing a software update today that brings on full iOS 7 integration - across iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - for full notifications support, just as on Android. This update, which will be pushed out OTA to all users, adds in support for notifications that don’t just include calls, emails, and texts as Pebble launched with, but also with calendar, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, and more - in fact, anything that shows up in Notification Center will be pushed to the smartwatch. Meanwhile, there are collaborations with some big names like GoPro and Foursquare to integrate with Pebble through the new SDK 2.0.
