Microsoft is pushing its ecosystem hard today at the Windows Phone Summit, stressing just how much  Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 will work together in NFC-enabled harmony. As well as being based on the same underlying core, the two platforms are intended to hook up more readily than previous iterations could. Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 get shared core

Microsoft has taken the wraps off of Windows Phone 8 today, revealing that the new “Apollo” platform will have a shared Windows core with Windows 8. The shared basis of the two platforms means that Microsoft developers and hardware manufacturers will be able to take advantage of the same code on both Windows 8 PCs and Windows Phone 8 handsets. For consumers, it means more available apps as developers will find it easier to release software for both platforms.

Clandestine Microsoft Surface launch leaves PC partners puzzled

Microsoft's Surface heads-up to PC partners was at most a three day warning, OEM insiders claim, with Windows head Steven Sinofsky outlining sketchy details in a series of short calls last Friday. The Windows RT and Windows 8 tablets came as almost a complete surprise to hardware partners in the US and Taiwan, Reuters' sources at the firms have insisted, with Sinofsky's calls failing to confirm either then name or the specifications of the slates. Ballmer: Windows partners knew Surface was coming

Microsoft warned PC manufacturers that it was planning its own range of Surface tablets, CEO Steve Ballmer has confirmed, giving them advance notice it would be challenging them on their own turf. "Our PC partners knew in advance we were announcing something today in this space" Ballmer told AllThingsD in the aftermath of the Surface reveal, a pair of Windows-based slates targeting the iPad and enterprise markets, though the chief exec declined to comment on the reaction those OEMs had. IBM Sequoia Supercomputer grabs World’s Fastest crown

IBM has reclaimed the World's Fastest Supercomputer crown, with a 16.32 sustained petaflop monster called Sequoia installed at the  National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Based on a 96-rack IBM Blue Gene/Q system, NNSA's new toy will be used to model nuclear weapons management, including artificial testing so as to avoid the need for underground performance tests. The supercomputer record was previously held by Fujitsu with its K Computer, that came in at 10.51 petaflops. Read The Full Story

Vizio All-in-One PC launches with Ivy Bridge

This is the first day that the folks at Vizio bring on their PC collection with both desktops and notebooks, having just been a television brand in the past. This first reveal includes first of all a set of two all-in-one computers, one with a 24-inch display at 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, the other with a 27-inch display with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. Both computers work with 3rd Generation Intel Core (Ivy Bridge) processors, both have NVIDIA Kepler GeForce GPU units, and both work with lovely 2.1 surround sound.

This week Dell's most modestly priced lineup of notebooks has been boosted to another level with 3rd Generation Intel Core processors. It's time for Ivy Bridge all over the Dell universe as back at the start of May Dell had the Vostro 470 Desktop as well as the XPS 8500 desktop boosted up to this newest generation of Intel solutions as well. The Vostro notebook lineup including the 13-inch 3360, 14-inch 3460, and 15-inch 3560 are all being pushed to options of either second or third generation Intel Core options this week. Intel’s Next Unit of Computing to cost around $400

Intel seems to be dabbling in a few different areas right now. The company has the desktop and laptop market locked down pretty tight, and is now attempting to breach the mobile space with Medfield, and may be looking to target miniature computers and HTPCs next. Back in April the company unveiled its “Next Unit of Computing” box, which packed a Sandy Bridge chip, Thunderbolt, HDMI, and USB all into a 10cm by 10cm box, and now rough pricing has been revealed. Samsung Series 7 Slate PC hands-on

Samsung’s final trick for Computex is the return of the classic slate tablet. In this case it’s the Series 7 Slate PC, a revamped version of the slate of old, this time running Windows 8. It makes use of Intel’s Sandy Bridge Core i3, i5, and i7 processors, which means you’ll be getting the full Windows 8 experience and not just Windows RT.
