PayPal Here demonstrated for mobile payments

This week the folks at PayPal have revealed a mobile payment project aiming to take on the already popular Square platform, working with a triangular piece of hardware that plugs into your iPhone. This new project is set to be titled "PayPal Here" and will be plugging in to your headphone jacks soon, complete with a "wing" hinge which keeps the hardware steady as you swipe your credit card through. The app that goes with the hardware goes by the name PayPal Here as well, these two pieces of the equation adding up to your ability to take payments from anyone with a credit card anywhere you like.

PayPal digital wallet introduced

PayPal has just lifted off the covers of its new digital wallet platform, which now only aims to further increase its presence in emerging digital payments but also adds some new and interesting features to the market. For example, users can specify various rules for automatically selecting a specific payment method based on purchase price or merchant. It will reportedly replace the existing PayPal.com home page, which hasn't been updated in years.

Google denies Android app payment crack-down

Google has denied penalizing developers for using third-party payment services, contesting claims that it told Android app makers they risked marketplace rejection for using PayPal or others instead of Google Wallet. Despite reports earlier this week that Google had contacted developers using PayPal, Zong, Boku or other payment providers, and threatened to suspend their listings in the freshly-renamed Google Play marketplace, the search company says its policy on payments is unchanged.

Google, Microsoft, PayPal, Facebook and other big names have announced a new anti-spam and phishing project, DMARC.org, creating a new system for email authentication that promises to learn from past attacks. "Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance" will use "a feedback loop between legitimate email senders and receivers to make impersonation more difficult" and, the companies hope, will eventually be adopted by the IETF as a standard.

Office Depot starts test of PayPal POS system

Office Depot is in testing with a new system that will use the PayPal point-of-sell system. The roll out of the PayPal system will be done in a limited number of locations as part of a test. Apparently, the rollout is starting small due to some "rough spots" in the experience with the system. Those rough spots have to do with limitations on who can use the system and the carriers who support the new payment method.
