Panasonic ELUGA hits Japan March 29 ahead of April Euro debut

Panasonic's ELUGA waterproof smartphone will go on sale on March 29 in Japan as the NTT docomo NEXT series P-04D, offering 4.3-inches of slimline dunkable Android. Available exclusively in purple, the new handset is up for pre-order in Japan today for existing NTT docomo subscribers. Announced at Mobile World Congress last month - where we went hands-on and promptly dropped the ELUGA underwater - the phone marks Panasonic's attempt to clamber back into the smartphone segment.

Panasonic ELUGA Power available for pre-orders

Pre-orders have started today for Panasonic's latest beast of an Android smartphone, the ELUGA Power. The 5-inch device debuted at Mobile World Congress 2012, where we spent some hands-on time with it and its smaller 4.3-inch sibling, the ELUGA. Despite the prototype seeming a bit rushed with Android acting glitchy during our time with the ELUGA Power, UK electronics retailer Clove is already set to take pre-orders for the device with a ship date set for late April.

Panasonic isn't taking any chances with its smartphone expansion plans; its ELUGA phone line-up promises speed, style and useful ruggedness, so we grabbed an ELUGA and gave it an impromptu bath. Waterproof, along with dustproof, the ELUGA can survive in up to a meter of water for a 30 minute period; we didn't leave it that long, however, as the 4.3-inch qHD OLED display was asking to be played with.

The folks at Panasonic have released information about an Android smartphone that'll be as slim as it is waterproof, with full high specifications in tow. This device goes by the name Panasonic ELUGA and is another way of saying "elegant user-oriented getaway." With a massive 66% of the phone's body dedicated to display, the entirety of the device being waterproof, and the whole unit weighing in at 103g total, we've got to expect that this will be a force to be reckoned with in 2012.
