Verizon Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus on sale now

The Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus have arrived for sale at Verizon Wireless' online store, and as expected they run to $149.99 for the Pre Plus and $99.99 for the Pixi Plus thanks to a $100 online discount.  Both webOS smartphones pack a few feature upgrades over their Sprint predecessors, with the Pixi Plus adding WiFi and the Pre Plus - as we discovered in our review last week - getting an improved keyboard, more memory and a MiFi-style 3G sharing app.

You may have missed it from our Palm Pre Plus review earlier in the week, but Verizon Wireless have kicked off sales of the new webOS smartphone by offering a BOGOF offer for the Palm Pixi Plus.  Between now and February 14th 2010, anyone who picks up a $149.99 Palm Pre Plus or $99.99 Palm Pixi Plus from Verizon will get a second, free Pixi Plus.  Full details after the cut, plus a tidbit for Sprint customers envious of the Verizon mobile hotspot app.

Palm had plenty to live up to at CES 2010, having done a reasonable job of rejuvenating their business the previous year with the surprise introduction of the Palm Pre. This time around they rolled out a more incremental update, the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus, both headed to Verizon Wireless' network. Palm Pre webOS 1.3.5.2 update hits Europe

Palm have released webOS 1.3.5.2 for European Pre users, a firmware upgrade that bundles together the collective improvements of the 1.3.5 and 1.3.5.1 updates US users saw last week.  Among the improvements are more space allotted for the installation of third-party applications, the ability to tether the Pre via Bluetooth (though make sure this is something O2 is happy with you doing first, unless you want to run the risk of penalties should they discover it), and animated GIF support in the browser.

Back when we reviewed the O2 Palm Pre in October 2009, we pondered whether the sheer length of time between its announcement the preceding January and its launch nine months later would leave buyers cold.  Unfortunately it sounds like that might have been the case: Mobile Industry Review have heard from an unnamed "heavyweight industry source" that O2 Ireland have sold a mere 220 Pre handsets, and that sales have been "equally successful" in the UK.

Palm have announced the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, and as expected they're headed to Verizon Wireless.  The Palm Pre Plus doubles memory to 16GB and drops the navigation button, while the Pixi Plus gets the WiFi that was missing from the Sprint Pixi.  Meanwhile both Verizon handsets will get a new 3G mobile hotspot application that, like a MiFi, will allow users to share their EVDO Rev.A connection with up to five connected WiFi clients.
