Just announced from the HP Palm Think Beyond webOS event is that the long speculated Palm Pre 2 is finally hitting Verizon tomorrow. The device is the first to sport the webOS 2.0, but sadly this release announcement comes just as they announce exciting news about the Palm Pre 3.

The Palm Pre 2 has been speculated to be available with Verizon sometime around this week and sure enough they’ve just made it official. The hype around the phone was mainly about the support for webOS 2.0.

But other than that it doesn’t seem like there was too much excitement about the device considering that most major carriers had no plans to carry the device. And now with the Palm Pre 3 possibly available this summer, the Pre 2 may very well be just a tiny blip in the radar.

Looks like the Palm Pre 2 is going to be available in less than two weeks, if you believe an internal product page from a third party retailer. This would be great a couple months ago, but the first webOS 2 device seems a little late to the party.

The problem is that HP is having a Palm event on the 9th where it is expected to be highlight webOS devices like tablets and smartphones. Somebody should have checked their calendar. The Palm Pre 2 is supposed to be launch on “all channels” but I don’t think the rush of customers will be there.

With the Verizon’s iPhone dropping on the 10th and the HP event on the 9th, the Palm Pre 2 looks to be a minor blip on the radar of consumers. I guess Verizon had to eventually put the Pre 2 out there but this is awfully bad timing if the rumor is real. So if you desperately want an webOS 2 device AFTER possibly (most likely) seeing newer gadgets be unveiled by HP only days before then get the Pre 2.

It’s been over two months since the Palm Pre 2 was announced, with the company saying that the Verizon version of the device would be released “in the coming months.” The handset’s available in Europe, and you can even buy yourself a GSM-based unlocked version of the second generation Pre, but there hasn’t been any word on the handset landing on Verizon since its announcement. Of course, there’s been rumors, but nothing official. And while seeing the Pre 2 appear in Best Buy’s system is no indicator as to when, exactly, the handset will be showing up for sale, at least we know that the retailer is getting ready to sell it. And that’s a pretty good step forward.

Thanks to an anonymous tipster, the above screenshot was taken from Best Buy’s internal system. Here, we can see that the Palm Pre 2 for Verizon as clearly being listed. We’ll have to ignore that little bit about December 30th, 2010, because we’ve gone ahead and passed that day. The system says you’ll be able to buy the handset, which will hopefully be equipped with the latest and greatest version of webOS 2.0, for $499 out-right. Unfortunately, there’s no mention of what the electronics retailer would sell it for on contract.

Unless the Pre 2 suddenly goes on sale today all over the United States, Palm won’t see the Pre 2 launched for Verizon in 2010. It’s unfortunate, but if you’re eagerly waiting to make this your next phone, at least you know it’s still coming. Either that, or you could just wait for another one to show up on eBay again.

While the Palm Pre 2 may be making the rounds over in some European countries right now, as well as in GSM form, and unlocked here in the States, there are several fans of the new device, and primarily webOS 2.0, that are (trying to) wait patiently for the device to land on Verizon. While the device has yet to receive an official release date, or even be shown off yet with Verizon branding, there’s no doubt that there’s at least a few devices running around on the Verizon network. And sure enough, someone with one of those devices put it up on eBay, where you could have been the lucky buyer. Until the auction got pulled.

Interestingly enough, the person behind the auction listed the device, which is obviously the updated hardware of the Pre 2, as the Palm Pre Plus (Verizon). While that device is already available on Verizon, it’s probably a good indication as to why the device had such a low bid at the time of its removal from eBay. At just $46 after two bids, and two days remaining on the auction. Of course, it could be that it was also listed as having a bad ESN, too. However, the auction holder was throwing in a free car charger. The Pre 2 was being auctioned off for parts, but actually finding a device to make use of those parts would probably have been pretty tough for anyone out here in the real world.

The whole story gets more interesting after the seller actually realized that he had a Pre 2 on his hands, and not just another Palm Pre Plus. When the realization hit him, he pulled the auction of his own accord, and now there’s no way to get that Pre 2 for yourself. So now we’re back to the waiting game, wondering when the Verizon-branded Pre 2 will actually hit retail shelves.

According to our friends over at Pre Central, Germany’s O2 timeline has always been “remarkably frank”, thusly they trust them – we’re inclined to as well. On the other hand, the people working at webOS en Castellano heard “from private forums” that current devices might never get webOS 2.0, instead simply getting an update straight to 2.1. Uh… alright! Whatever works, man!

There already is a 2.0.1 out there for Palm Pre 2 that fixes some bugs, but it appears that this 2.1 is more advances than that. This 2.1 rumor has no timeline however, and is of course less credible having come third or fourth hand. Here’s hoping, though! Nothing like an update to a Palm!

ALSO note that as we get pumped up about the rise of Palm and WebOS to prominence, we’re rolling out some chats about the subject over at webOS Forums – come and have a cup of tea and talk it out a bit. Maybe bring your pals, bring your pixies and your pres, bring it all.

When webOS launched, there was some grumbling that the device, when it came to the Palm Pre (and subsequently released, Palm Pre Plus), focused too much on the portrait-slider hardware keyboard. The absence of an official on-screen keyboard left some people wanting more. And while there were “options” available for those who wanted to travel down some particular roads, Palm seems to want to keep focusing on the hardware keyboards. That should surprise no one, considering Palm’s device legacy. But, it looks like webOS 2.0, which launched with the release of the Palm Pre 2, features a software keyboard, even if it is far from perfect.

Thanks to the fine folks at webOS Internals, they’ve found the software keyboard that had originally only been hinted at back when webOS 2.0 code was just beginning to be sifted through. They rummaged through several portions of the latest version of webOS 2.0, before they did a few tweaks, and then restarted the system. When everything came back online, they simply had to input “Opt+Sym+K,” and they had an on-screen keyboard displayed for them, ready to use.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the software keyboard is ready for the limelight quite yet. The whole thing is still a bit buggy, and there doesn’t seem to be any optimization for the keyboard. However, it’s obvious that Palm and HP feel that a software keyboard is necessary in one way or another. With that in mind, we can probably start counting down the days until a slate-style webOS 2.0-based device makes an appearance.

Earlier this week, Palm chief Jon Rubinstein admitted that the company had squandered its “birthright” to the smartphone segment through lack of investment, promising a broad line-up of devices – including a much-anticipated tablet – in 2011.

The Palm Pre was expected to do really well in the market and ultimately the phone failed. It sold better than some of the real epic failures like the Kin family from Microsoft, but Pre sales were nothing like what Palm and many people that waited for the phone expected. Palm was eventually gobbled up by HP and the first smartphone to trickle out from Palm since then is the Pre 2 and that device is available in the UK right now.

The catch is that you have to buy the phone SIM free because there is no direct carrier support. After the failed original, you can hardly blame the carriers for not wanting to offer the second version of the device. If you like the idea of an unlocked and contract free Web OS 2.0 smartphone you can grab the thing up right now for £399.

The phone can be purchased only at the Palm UK store. For that much green you get a 1GHz processor and a 5MP camera. The phone has multitasking and lots of other features. It sounds just like the original phone with some tweaks to the OS and hardware. Palms does say the design of the Pre 2 is more streamlined and it uses a 3.1-inch multi touch screen and has a slide out QWERTY keyboard.

The Palm Pre 2 is apparently set to hit the UK on Friday, November 12 – the end of this week – with Palm expecting to sell the 1GHz smartphone SIM-free initially. The company let slip the date to Pocket-lint, but failed to mention any potential carriers for the webOS 2.0 handset; in France, where the Pre 2 has been on sale since late October, carrier SFR is offering the phone exclusively.

Palm launched the original Pre in the UK with carrier O2 as its partner, but sales numbers were said to be underwhelming. That wasn’t helped by the fact that the phone made its sales debut more than six months after arriving in the US. Palm seems to be taking a more proactive approach with timing now, but it’s unclear whether the Pre 2 has managed to secure carrier support or not.

France is running around crazy with their new telephones today, all jumping into the air, swinging around signposts, falling down into train station holes. Why? Because today is the day they get their Palm Pre 2, launched on the SFR network. The pricing is between € 99.90 on contract and on up to € 399.90 off-contract. This lovely little device is rocking the P102UEU, which means it’s a wild animal.

This Palm Pre 2 has a AZERTY keyboard, which, if you’re not familiar with, is very similar to the QWERTY you’re used to, but a bunch of the keys are switched around to be more friendly to the French dictionary. This French version is also working on European 3G bands, which means that between these two rather important factoids, it seems that it’d be much to the benefit of developers, unlocker hackers, and crazy people who cannot wait a single moment until they have the newest device to wait that extra amount of time and get the US version when they can.

We’ve already seen an internal training document claiming that the Palm Pre 2 would be landing on Verizon’s network some time in the future, but then we got confirmation from HP that the device, the true successor to the original Palm Pre (or Palm Pre Plus, even) would be landing on Verizon “in the coming months.” To some, that “coming months” part would mean that HP is aiming for a holiday shopping release, but it could also mean that they’ll miss that date and land some time in early 2011. According to some sources speaking with Droid-Life, it may be sooner than we all assumed.

According to the sources, who were also confirming that Android-based handsets would be landing on the Verizon network at the same time, the Palm Pre 2 will hit Verizon shelves and airwaves on November 11th. This is just a rumor for now, so take this bit of news with a grain of salt. Of course, the main takeaway of the new Pre is the introduction of webOS 2.0, and all of its new features. However, many people are looking forward to the upgraded hardware, too, even if it does look like the first model. If the November 11th date pans out, we have less than a month to wait before the handset starts showing up in Verizon stores across the nation. Who’s hoping?

Welcome to the Tuesday edition of The Daily Slash. First up, as we take one last look over the Internet for something interesting, we find that our story from around the Web has Activision officially releasing the DJ Hero 2 bundle, just in time for their Fall predictions made at the beginning of the year. And then, as we wrap up the night, we’ll take a look at what’s been going on around the R3 Media Network.

From Around the Web:

Activision Unleashes DJ Hero 2: Activision had originally said that they’d be able to get DJ Hero 2 out onto shelves by the Fall of 2010, and while no one out there probably didn’t believe them, it’s still good to see the company reach their goals. DJ Hero 2 is officially on sale, starting now, and you can find different retailers offering up different incentives to choose them for your next purchase. For example, if you choose Amazon to order yours online, you’ll get a complimentary copy of Linkin Park’s new CD, A Thousand Suns. If you go to Best Buy tomorrow to pick up your own model, you’ll get a hard-shell turntable carrying case. What’s better though, is that the DJ Hero 2 bundle includes a pair of turntables, and a microphone. You can pick up yours, without the bundle, for $59.99. But if you want the whole ordeal, you’ll have to fork over $149.99.

HP has officially announced the Palm Pre 2, the much-rumored replacement to the original Pre, and running HP webOS 2.0. Headed to Verizon and a Canadian carrier “in the coming months”, but making its debut on French carrier SFR this Friday, the Palm Pre 2 has a 3.1-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 1GHz processor and 16GB of onboard storage.

There’s also WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and GPS, along with a 5-megapixel fixed-focus camera with LED flash and geotagging support. The Verizon model uses EVDO Rev.A while the SFR version will have UMTS/HSPA. There’s still no memory card slot, however, but you can use the Pre 2 with the Touchstone inductive charger.

HP webOS 2.0, meanwhile, introduces “Stacks” – where open apps are logically grouped together in card stacks – and has Flash Player 10.1 support and the same Synergy multi-account synchronization from the first Pre. The Verizon model will also have a Skype app, and there’s Quickoffice, VPN support, Bluetooth keyboard support, and a feature called Exhibition which auto-loads apps when docked on the Touchstone.

No word on pricing at this stage, but HP has said that US developers will be able to buy a UMTS version of the Pre 2 for coding purposes (from http://developer.palm.com/devdevices.html). Meanwhile HP webOS 2.0 will be rolled out to existing users “in the coming months.”

Press Release:

Coming first on new Palm Pre 2 in France, the United States and Canada

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 19, 2010 – HP today announced HP webOS 2.0, the most significant update to the platform since its launch in 2009 and a substantial step in HP’s vision to transform how people think, feel and connect.
The first device to run webOS 2.0, HP’s new Palm Pre 2 smartphone, will be available on Friday in France from SFR and is scheduled to be available in the coming months in the United States from Verizon Wireless and in Canada.
“With webOS 2.0, we’re advancing the innovations we introduced 16 months ago, expanding the features that make webOS great for consumers, enterprises and developers,” said Jon Rubinstein, senior vice president and general manager, Palm Global Business Unit, HP. “We’ve made tremendous strides since the platform launched, and now we’re taking our biggest leap forward with powerful new features that make it easier to get more things done with your webOS device.”
webOS 2.0 offers consumers compelling application experiences not available on any other platform, while providing developers an unparalleled level of openness to integrate their applications and services. The next generation of webOS makes it easier to get more done:
True Multitasking – Pause a game, tap an email notification, check your calendar, read a restaurant review, send an email reply, then switch back to the game without closing anything.(1,2) webOS lets you easily manage multiple open applications and notifications using natural touch gestures. New in webOS 2.0, Stacks logically groups together your open apps so they work the way you do. Whether you’re reading email or planning a night on the town, Stacks keeps related items together so managing multiple tasks is even easier.

Just Type – Start an email, create a message, update your status, search your favorite websites – all before you’ve even opened an app.(1) With webOS 2.0, whenever you want to do something on your phone – whether it’s emailing, texting, searching or almost anything – just type. And Just Type is open to developers, so they can integrate with the search function and add their own user-customizable shortcuts, called Quick Actions.

HP Synergy – webOS was the first mobile OS to connect you seamlessly to multiple web services. With the Synergy feature, you just have to sign in to your Facebook, Google, Microsoft® Exchange, LinkedIn and Yahoo! accounts and your information automatically populates your phone.(3) webOS 2.0 will extend the support for Synergy so developers can easily plug new Messaging, Contacts and Calendar application sources directly into the core webOS experiences.(4)

Exhibition – A new way to use your webOS phone, Exhibition lets you run apps designed specifically for the Palm Touchstone Charging Dock, turning charge time into useful time.(4, 5) Set your phone on the dock and Exhibition launches automatically, showing you anything from today’s agenda to a slideshow of your Facebook photos. Exhibition will enable developers to display aspects of their existing app experience or create specialized apps for use when users have their webOS device in charge mode on the charging dock.

Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1 Beta – With version 2.0, webOS now supports a beta of Adobe Flash Player 10.1 in the browser, which provides access to rich, Flash based web content.(6)
webOS 2.0 also includes many more new features, including the following:
Favorites – With webOS 2.0, you can tag your favorite contacts so they appear as favorites in Phone and Contacts views. When you search for them by name, they instantly show up at the top of the Contacts, Email, Messaging and Phone apps. Favorites make it simple to get in touch fast.

Skype Mobile™ (Verizon Wireless only) – For Verizon Wireless customers, webOS 2.0 supports Skype-to-Skype calls and messaging while in the United States to anywhere in the world, and low-rate calls to international landlines and cell phones.

Text Assist – webOS 2.0 offers greatly expanded capabilities to spell check, auto correct, set up macros and customize the dictionary.

Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite – An all-new document viewer from the leading provider of mobile document viewers offers support for Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents and provides integration with a variety of services, including Google Docs and Dropbox.

Facebook 2.0 – Available via the Palm App Catalog, Facebook 2.0 will support Facebook IM via Synergy in the Messaging application,(4) as well as Stacks, status updates via Quick Action and the Exhibition feature.

Browser – The browser adds support for more HTML5 features, including geolocation support. OpenSearch plugin support makes it easy to add your favorite websites to Just Type web search.

Messaging – The unified Messaging app in webOS 2.0 adds Yahoo! IM and buddy management. Customers can now connect to their buddies through SMS, MMS, Google Talk, AIM and Yahoo! IM.

VPN – webOS 2.0 supports the most popular ways to connect to a corporate network, including IPsec and Cisco AnyConnect mobile optimized VPN, which supports SSL (TLS and DTLS).

App Catalog – The redesigned Palm App Catalog makes finding and discovering great apps even easier.(7) And the new Software Manager helps you keep your apps up-to-date.

Launcher – A redesigned app launcher lets you add, label and reorder launcher pages.

Phone – The webOS 2.0 Phone app lets you easily dial your favorites and offers reverse area code lookup and Skype Mobile integration (Skype Mobile for Verizon Wireless only).

Accounts – The new Accounts app provides a single place to manage all your Synergy accounts.

Bluetooth® keyboards – webOS now supports Bluetooth keyboards and Bluetooth SPP peripherals, enabling applications such as barcode readers and realty lock boxes.

A host of developer features – In addition to Exhibition, Just Type and Synergy APIs, webOS 2.0 adds Node.JS, enabling developers to create services in JavaScript. They also can now use the webOS Plug-In Development Kit (PDK) to combine C/C++ with web technologies in a single app.
More information about the features of webOS 2.0 is available at www.palm.com/softwareupdate.
Introducing Palm Pre 2
HP also introduced the Palm Pre 2 smartphone, the latest evolution to the Palm Pre lineup. Pre 2 is the first Palm phone with a gigahertz processor and features a 5-megapixel camera, a glass screen and a sleeker, streamlined design that still gives users the ideal combination of a vivid touchscreen and a slide-out keyboard.
More information about Palm Pre 2, including features and specifications, is available at www.palm.com/Pre2.
Availability
Palm Pre 2 featuring webOS 2.0 will be available on Friday in France from SFR and is scheduled to be available in the coming months in the United States from Verizon Wireless and in Canada. The webOS 2.0 update will be delivered to existing customers in the coming months, with exact timing to be announced at a later date.
Developers will be able to purchase unlocked UMTS versions of Pre 2 in the United States to use as a canvas to build the next generation of webOS applications and services. More information about the purchase program will be available at http://developer.palm.com/devdevices.html.

The information about the Palm Pre 2, the successor to the original version, is slowly and steadily coming out of the pipe. We know that the device will feature a 1GHz processor under the hood, and we’ll also be able to find 512MB of RAM. We even know what it’s going to look like. And, without a shadow of a doubt, we know the device will launch webOS 2.0 into the world. What we don’t know, is where it’s heading. But, thanks to a leak from an anonymous tipster, Verizon may be in the running to get it soon.

The leak doesn’t come with any additional information. However, it’s obvious that training, in some regard, has already begun on the Palm Pre 2. The above image was taken from Verizon’s internal VZLearn database, which indicates that training is under way. The leak does’t go into any detail regarding a release date or pricing, so it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer. How much longer, that’s the big question.

As we march on through October, we’re having to keep up with companies all over the globe announcing something new. Today we saw the release of Sony products with Google TV, and we even got some on-time analysis of the upcoming products. In our story from around the Web, we’ll take a look at how Intel is doing, as they’ve just announced their third quarter results. And then to end the night, we’ll take a look at what’s been going on around the R3 Media Network. Welcome to the Tuesday edition of The Daily Slash.

From Around the Web

Intel Reports Record Revenue: Earlier this afternoon, Intel came forward and announced their third quarter results, which turned out quite good for the company. This is the best quarter they’ve had since the second quarter of this year, so it looks like Intel is on a continual rise. The company reported $3 billion in profit, on a record $11.1 billion reported in revenue. Interestingly enough, it looks like the bump in numbers doesn’t have anything to do with Atom-based netbooks, and has quite a bit to do with a three percent increase in laptops and server chips sales. True enough, considering Atom chips decreased by four percent.

Yesterday, the French wireless carrier SFR managed to jump the gun a bit, and revealed some of the specifications for what the next Pre would have under the hood. But, while the image they had along with early announcement was good enough to get an idea for what to expect, thanks to MobiFrance, we now have the first ever images of the Palm Pre 2, in hand, and turned on.

As you can tell from the image, there’s not a lot of differentiation from this new version, and the model that people either loved and hated the first time around. It’s still packing a portrait slider, with the full QWERTY keyboard. The front of the device does seem to be flat this time around, though, and a more refined ridge seems to be tracing its edges. The device is running webOS 2.0, and it looks like the display itself is packing a resolution of 320 x 480.

PreCentral managed to get confirmed that the device is packing a 1GHz processor under the hood, and that there is indeed 512MB of RAM available on the device. And, as for a release date, it looks like MobiFrance believes the refresh for the current iteration of the Pre device (and even the Pixi) could happen as early as November. Nothing confirmed quite yet, but at least we have images of what’s coming.
