Finnish watch maker Suunto recently announced its latest GPS-enabled watch called the Ambit. The Ambit is designed to help athletes with training and outdoor adventure. It provides a host of tools, including GPS navigation with 3D Compass, altimeter, barometric sensor, and a heart rate monitor.

The Suunto Ambit offers almost everything you need to track your outdoor performance, including a full-featured GPS with 3D Compass that lets you pinpoint your location using multiple coordinate systems. It features an altimeter that determines your altitude and logs your vertical gain should you go mountain climbing and a heart rate monitor that works in combination with a chest strap.

The built-in SiRF IV low power GPS chipset allows for a long battery life of up to 15 hours with continuous GPS tracking and 50 hours with GPS tracking every 1 minute. The watch is water resistant to 100m and comes in either black or silver for $550 or $600 with the optional heart rate belt. It will be available starting in March.

It should come as no surprise that this device was all but overlooked at CES 2012 as its predecessor, the Casio G’Zone hasn’t exactly seen its fair share of press or success in the market (on Verizon.) That said, this device has a few one-ups on its predecessor, including perhaps most importantly the “G-Shock” branding, straight off Casio’s ultra-popular wristwatch line by the same name. The G-Shock smartphone will be running Android, has a camera on the back, and will likely be near-impossible to break.

For those of you that love hardcore electronics, congratulations, you’ve found the king of the crop. At the moment this prototype is said to be shock resistant up to 10 feet, water resistant up to 1.0 bar (that being 10 meters), and pressure resistant up to 1.0 bar. You can smash this one, folks, drop it from on high into the watery depths where it hits a rock and comes back to tell the tale! That’s what’s going on here, hardcore people.

You’ve got a metal back casing, the rest is made of plastic with resin around the edges to keep you bumping, and the front is some sort of reinforced glass. Probably Gorilla Glass up there but you never know. The camera on the back has a flash and we’re probably going to see Android 2.3 Gingerbread right out of the box, regardless of when this smartphone is launched inside 2012. Seeya then, bikers and hikers!

Russound announced today its AirGo Outdoor Sound Station that’s the first outdoor speaker system to tout Apple’s AirPlay music streaming technology via the attachment of an AirPort Express device. Usually we see speaker docks with AirPlay integrated, but the AirGo has, instead, a weatherproof compartment where an AirPort Express unit can be stowed.

The AirGo Outdoor Sound Station can be used as a permanent outdoor speaker system unlike other shiny AirPlay-equipped systems we’re used to seeing that are meant to sit pretty indoors. The AirGo provides a powerful amplifier and wide soundstage perfect for your deck, patio, lawn, or driveway. You can stream music from your iTunes collection on your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Mac or PC.

And since the AirGo uses an AirPort Express for its AirPlay connectivity it can also help extend your home WiFi network and act as a portable WiFi hotspot. This specialized speaker system, however, doesn’t run cheap and is priced at $399.

If you ever find yourself stranded in the wilds packed with a bunch of mirrors, wood, and some chicken that needs burning we have the outdoor cooking tool for you. This thing you see is called the solar Cookup200. It looks like some sort of satellite frying doohickey. It’s actually a device for focusing the sun light that hits it to cook up food.

It also looks like if you stand just right and miss the pan you might fry your own eyeballs. Here is the crazy part. Apparently, you can actually buy this thing and use it for camp outs or living off the land cooking. I bet it would cook a squirrel right up. The tray you see in the center is where you place the food.

You can arrange the cooking section into the right position by placing the rod though a different hole in the side. I wonder how long it would take to cook up some burgers on this thing. I guess it would depend on the strength of the sun. In Texas, you could cook on the sidewalk in the summer so your outdoor feast may burn to ash in a few seconds with this.

In Texas, grilling is a big deal, most of the outdoor events we have around here involves cooking up something on the grill. If you live in a place where you have a small patio or don’t have room for a normal grill the Erbe planter/Grill combo might seem like a good idea. The thing looks like one of those terracotta planters that pretty much everyone has on their patio in an apartment complex. This one holds a pant on top and has a grill underneath.

The grill is a strange pattern with holes all in it rather than the normal long straight wires. That means your steaks will have a weird circular pattern on them rather than the traditional grill lines. It also means your hot dogs won’t fall into the ash, which is an upside. The thing that really trips me out about this grill is the fact that I can see some idiot setting his plant on fire. Someone somewhere will not want to wait for the grill to cool before they put the plant back on top.

The charcoal under a layer of ash can stay hot for a long time so it would seem this thing would be a bit of a fire hazard. Especially if your plant growing skills are like mine and you forget to water the plant for say a month or so and it turns yellow and dry. The other thing that is bothersome about this Erbe Planter/grill is that it costs $124.

My wife is big on things that make no sense to me. For instance, she likes those path lights that are too dim to actually light the path to the house. She also wants to plant things that I know she has no intentions of watering, so they die in a few days.

I think the best of both worlds for her would be this Ripe Radish light garden thingy. The concept is a sort of combination of a plant and a garden light. When installed it looks like the top of a radish sticking out of the ground. You can plant a real plant in the flowerpot in the center of the circle.

Once the plant grows, it looks like a giant growing vegetable in the yard or garden. It’s a cool device for sure. It reminds me of some genetically mutated carrot that glows with evil power and creates a wererabbit when consumed.

Wow. Now this thing is excessive. If you are super into barbequing everything then you’ll love the Hampton Grill. This thing is downright awesome and it looks like something out of the future. While it might look normal at first, it can actually unfold into three separate grilling stations.

Each station has its own temperature controls. This is so convenient. I mean, if you’re cooking for a bunch of people, and want to grill up more than steaks but sides too, the extra grills could be used at different temps for different items like corn or kabobs.

This grill is capable of grilling, stir frying, steaming, smoking and rotisserie. And it folds up just by pushing a button. How futuristic! So, how much do you have to pay for 1,200 square inches of cooking space? About $4,000. Good luck to Hampton Grills selling that in this economy!

Beneath the macho and recycled XENOY protective case, the Land Rover phones sound a lot like Sonim’s XP3: Less on the look, no diamond or easy to break full touch screen panel; Land Rover phones are submersible and weatherproof to withstand salt, fog, humidity, transport and thermal shock and can sustain a 1.6-metre drop to concrete from any angles.

Two co-branded phones, Land Rover S1 and S4 will enter the market by mid-2009, and the third following later in the year.

Polk Audio announced their Atrium Sat 10 and Sub 30 outdoor speaker system at CEDIA 2008. Meant for enjoying music in the great outdoors, this satellite/subwoofer system produces great quality sound.

Outdoor theaters are all the rage these days, so this audio system seems to be right on target. And I get what they’re doing with the terra cotta style planter. I know the subwoofer is supposed to blend in with its surroundings and just look like another backyard decoration, but it does have a bit of a plastic look.

These speakers sound great when they’re blasting together, but the price tag is a little steep. Each satellite speaker will cost you $179 and the subwoofer costs $329. Don’t go looking to buy them yet, though. They won’t be released until January.

Originally the designer based out of the UK, Koray Ozgen, created a hand-blown glass version. However, later decided to make a more durable model out of plastic. That way it could be more versatile and be used outdoors.

Although this is a product based out of the UK, recently it has made its way onto a different retailers site which is offering it up to those of us in the US. The fixtures can either be sat on the floor or hung as a pendant with one of their optional kits. For one of these fixtures it will cost you $176.

If you are trying to either use less gas or go the eco-friendly route this mod would be a great weekend project. Sadly since this was only spotted in someone’s Flickr account, there are no details on it.

I’d like to know how successful the modder thinks their creation is. I’m sure now that this has made its way onto the internet someone else will try their hand at it. It just makes me even more happy that I have no yard to mow.

When you walk by most peoples’ gardens, you’ll see some kind of cute statue, maybe of a gnome, or a deer. Those are nice and all, but what if you want something a little bit scary for your garden? I don’t know about you, but I love this Garden Zombie.

The picture shows the mulch all nice and neat around him, but I think I’d put some bare dirt around him to make it look like he was really digging his way out of the ground. That would certainly scare off any little kids that wandered too closely.

He’s a little expensive at $89, but he would totally be worth it. Well maybe not, it might give my grandma a heart attack if she stopped by to visit. Then again if I had a garden full of flowers that were actually alive, that would probably give her one too.

Details of Garmin’s upcoming GPS range refresh have been revealed at Buy.com, suggesting a new range of handheld GPS receivers. The Oregon 200 will include a 3-inch color touchscreen (that’s outdoor-readable), high-sensitivity GPS, electronic compass, barometric altimeter and temperature sensor. Map data will be courtesy of a 3D basemap as well as a digital elevation model, so hills shouldn’t be too much of a surprise, and the Oregon is waterproof.

There’s also the ability to transfer user routes, tracks, waypoints, geocaches and images between devices, through an unspecified wireless technology. A MicroSD slot lets you augment storage with new land or water maps. Buy.com have it listed as measuring 4.5 in x 2.3 in x 1.4 in and weighing just 6.8oz with two AA batteries.

The Oregon is obviously intended for the more adventurous explorers, rather than simply drivers, although there is an automotive profile setting (as well as marine, recreation, fitness and geocache). No photo or availability details, but it’s on Buy.com for $420.

There are quite a few solar powered items out now, especially when it comes to outdoor lighting. Well now you can stand out from your neighbors and have this wind powered one.

Although I’m not actually sure how bright it will end up being, so there really is no way to tell if this is just something that glows or if it will illuminate your late night fun. It has 14 LEDs that are located on the edges of the light, making for a cool effect as it spins in the wind.

The only issue is, it is either poorly designed or the person that wrote the description for the gadget on the vendor’s site isn’t very bright. It doesn’t actually mention if it has a rechargeable battery, so according to the site it would just come on when it’s windy out. Which is kind of crap when you factor in that it’s being sold for $200.

It’s supposed to be relaxing or something along those lines. This 95w bench is made by a German company and to find out more on pricing you’ll have to actually contact them (which is never good news).

Skateboards haven’t seen a lot of changes in recent years. Essentially they are still a plank of wood with wheels and a pretty design slapped on. At some point you have to update these things.

Obviously, because if your kids play with the same skateboard you did then we’d bridge the generation gap a bit and we can’t have that. Here we have two new alternatives to the classic skateboard, if you’re really curious to see them in action you can check out the videos here.

First there is the 360 Skateboard, the one with the two large wheels, which you ride by slipping your feet into the center of the wheels. Then there is the Streetcarver which looks a bit more like the classic skateboard but it features a lot tighter turns and rides more like a snowboard.

As a kid I was always tagging along with my slightly younger brother. That typically meant that I didn’t play with Barbies much, I had a big wheel and massive squirt guns as well as a few toy cars and some Ninja Turtles action figures. The best was always the squirt guns, although eventually it ended with one of us just making a break for it and grabbing the hose.

However, no hose would be needed if I had a big wheel with a built in squirt gun that shot twenty feet. Yes that’s right, someone threw a water tank on the back of a big wheel and made it shoot 20 ft. Now as an adult there is not a chance in hell I’d buy this for my own future children (likely any child of mine would be constantly doing drive by soakings). Keeping that in mind, when my brother’s daughter hits the right age I am definitely headed to Amazon to buy one.

The big wheel has firing controls on the joystick and even more cool, real rubber tires. No more spinning wheels waiting for the plastic to catch. On second thought, I want one of these for me. It does have a weight limit of 150lbs meaning I wouldn’t break it or anything. The fact that my knees would be at my ears is besides the point. The Green Machine H2O is being sold for $100.

Which means I typically fall asleep to the sounds of birds chirping outside of my window. Some might find this soothing, but me, I’d like to get rid of them all. This gadget is perfect for just that.

No, it doesn’t kill all birds or anything equally horrifying. It merely repels birds by emitting different noises. Using varying sounds that make them believe a predator is about it will scare off birds within one acre of this fascinating little contraption.

Now, if you live in town right on top of your neighbors you’re likely to make them very angry when they miss all of those lovely chirps in the morning. Different types of the BirdXPeller Pro frighten away different birds. For example the Pro 1 repels pigeons, starlings, swallows and gulls. Each of the three different models are sold for $239.

With spring finally here and summer soon to come, kids will be making their way outdoors once again. Well, hopefully there will be at least a couple that still play on those low tech swings. Either way, even if the swing has become almost archaic at least you can get a slightly more updated version.

Swings haven’t changed a ton over time, they essentially still swing back and forth. Nothing too exciting there, however, Alexander Lervik created a glow-in-the-dark version. It comes equipped with fiber optic sensors that will glow in the night

Which would definitely give any backyard an eerie glow to it. Especially with a child aboard it, anyone watching will likely get a fun light show for the evening. I’m not sure if the swing is still in the concept stages or not, if it is it’s in the upper end of them since the swing has gotten a decent amount of publicity and the site claims that it has been a huge success around the globe. Now if only we knew how to snag one for our own.

I currently live smack dab in the Midwest, putting me too far away from the ocean to care about sharks. My biggest concern is dodging raccoons and deer on the road. For me taking a dip in the ocean and thinking about sharks is slightly nerve wrecking, not that it would stop me. However, anyone who lives close to the ocean probably knows that the odds of a shark attack are very low.

Well apparently the Shark Shield is meant to ward off sharks by creating a conductive field that causes spasms the closer the shark gets to the gadget. The makers decided to take it out for a test run in South Australia, where instead of repelling it caused a 12 foot long Great White Shark to actually attack the device. The makers are still claiming 100% success with tests and say that no one wearing it has ever been attacked.

I suppose that could be technically true, since they didn’t attack a person exactly, it just attacked the device. If for some bizarre reason you’d still like to give it a whirl it will cost you $645.

This house/outdoor home theater was designed for Hagy Belzberg by a 13-member design team that’s employed by the agency of the same name. I’d say they hit the ultimate home theater right on the nose.

It has the Drive-In style screen (likely with an updated professional projector) and seating outside to watch it from. It appears to be out in the middle of nowhere, but its just outside of either LA or Hollywood, but with enough open space it shouldn’t irk even your closest neighbors.

Other than the theater, the house its attached to has 5800 square feet and there is a 65 foot infinity pool for those not too interested in the film playing. “I love seasons too, that’s why I live in a place that skips the shitty ones!” – Daniel Tosh.

The package comes with everything you need to enjoy these speakers the moment you get them, including batteries. It has the speakers, of course, AC adapter, wireless transmitter base, remote control (always a good sign!), wall mounts and adapter cables. You can listen to them from 150ft away and it has a 900 MHz transmitter.

The speakers are quite large but the whole kit and caboodle weights only 9.4lbs. These will cost you around $130.

Its industrial strength casing can withstand dust, shock, water and repeated dropping. It comes with Bluetooth, push to talk, and dual speakers that are extra loud. It comes in various colors: black and black, black and red, black and blue, black and green, and black and gray.

The Toughphone is also known as the Sonim XP1, and incase you were interested it’s also been nominated to represent the word “fugly” in the dictionary (by me). That being said I know it’s purpose is for a higher calling than social status and in that case it is a nice phone.

Valentine’s Day is coming up, some are excited about it, others loath it. However, like it or not, you can still drool over the lavish Valentine’s Day inspired gifts. This hot tub may not sparkle like the much sought after jewelry, but it would definitely keep you warm through the end of winter and all the way through spring as well.

I actually enjoy Valentine’s Day, however, the commercials that come with this grand holiday are just so sappy I could puke. I know, I am female so I should be swept off my feet by them, but I tend to get a little green in the face. This limited-edition Love Tub is a state-of-the-art Amore Bay hot tub from Dimension One Spas. They are only offering 100 of the bright red hot tubs, so if you have the dough to pony up for it you’ll have to snag one quick. Then mail it to me of course.

As with all D1 spas the gray exterior is made out of recycled plastic milk jugs and also features a black etched design along the side. The jets are also enhanced with with black accents. The tub designed by Vic Walker is also available through the Sweetheart of a Love Tub contest, you can enter online until February 29th of this year. Just swing by the product site to drop in an entry. Otherwise, you’ll have to come up with $20,000 for the Love Tub.

The Freeplay Companion harnesses energy through several different ways: solar, rechargeable and human powered energy. It can charge your cell phones, give you a radio and is a flashlight, all things which can play a part in survival if disaster should strike. It’s only 125mm long and 200g. It has a solar panel and a crank with a rubberized body for impact resistance. There’s an earphone plug for relaxed listening as well.

The Freeplay Companion will be sold for around $30-$32. It’s being marketed towards the outdoor types and the company says it “offers as much utility as the Swiss Army Knife”.

My brother and I tended to have all kinds of battles, usually involving Super Soakers, Nerf guns and the occasional rubber band gun. That is until one of us got mad or injured. Thankfully, my eye seems to have healed very well since they replaced it with this shiny new one. As a fully mature and responsible adult, I would still kick my brother’s ass if given the chance. Which makes me drool with envy over a rubber band gun that could propel 288 rubber bands in his general direction.

The gun is made up of 479 pieces total and shoots rubber bands up to 22 feet at a rate of 40 per second. The gun has 24 revolving barrels that hold up to 288 standard-sized #36 bands. The thing is so massive you have to put it on a tripod, a table mount or balance it on your hip.

Not only is it huge and likely awkward to hold, you have to charge it for 5 hours to get it to run for a whopping 7 minutes. I must say I was am also incredibly disappointed by the video as well. No one got hurt, nothing was really broken. Well except for a little cardboard head, but all in all making the gun seem very mild. A big gun like this deserves a video with horrified screams and breaking glass, even if it is really thin glass. Follow the link to see how it was constructed.

When someone says they are watering the plants, that could mean any number of things. Generally for me it means a miracle has occurred and I’ve remembered to actually water them. That also means I’m watering dried up dead plants. However, for some it is a much more religious act. For those that like keeping their plants pampered this Oxygenating Watering Can is just the thing to keep you plants looking healthy.

Studies show that plants grow faster, bloom earlier, have richer colors and bear more flowers with the use of oxygenated water. This watering can works by filling it with tap water, then just plug it in for 4-5 minutes. Then just water the plants as you normally would.

With spring coming up (eventually), you’ll need a new watering can to start out the season. It is being sold for $99.95.

I’m sure one or more of you have covered a tree or some other fixture in your yard with Christmas lights only to realize that you now have to run an ugly extension cord all the way out to them. Well, with these lights you won’t have that problem as they are solar powered.

There are 50 LEDs on this chain of lights, and the solar panel charges up a pair of AA batteries which in turn power them for 9 hours. Furthermore, you won’t even have to concern yourself with turning them on or off as the photocell will detect low-light conditions and turn them on for you, and by sun up they’ll likely be dead again, and so goes the circle of battery life.

The bulbs are rated for 10,000 hours which is either a lot of Christmases or, you could probably take them with you camping as well. Hammacher Schlemmer could probably get them to you by Christmas Eve if you ordered them today, or you could get them after Christmas and use them for other things or just save them for next year, regardless, they’ll cost you $29.95 which will probably pay for itself just from the electricity it will save you next Christmas.

For those that enjoy the great outdoors while trying to work on their laptop, this solar table is just the way to save on that energy bill. Now anyone can take one look at my pasty white skin and know that it is highly unlikely that I’ll be toting my laptop out into the dreaded sunlight. However, I can appreciate the gesture of creating a table to make the world a greener place.

Other than my issue of going out into the sunlight, I also think they could have made a better attempt at making it a bit more aesthetically appealing. The table takes 3 hours to bring the NiMH battery to a full charge, using a built-in 150-watt power inverter.

Sadly the table’s issues don’t end there, to snag yourself one it will cost you $3600. All around I’d say you’d be better off with one of the more portable designs that you can just sit in the window. That way if you really don’t feel like going outside you can still run your laptop or other gadgets from solar energy.

A bike inspired by Leonardo da Vinci would suffice. The NuVinci transmission, which is what makes “The Ride” special, uses ball bearings and a metal disc system to give you and infinite amount of gears. This concept was though up in 1490 by da Vinci, what can you say but that the man was a genius and ahead of his times.

You can get The Ride in either standard or a signature series version for $2,995 or $3,995 respectively. Yeah, it’s pricey for a bike, but you couldn’t buy the Mona Lisa for the same price as a caricature.

Calloway Woodworks knows and understands this desire. They’ve got an Outdoor Barrel Sauna for around $4500-$6670. I don’t think that’s a bad price at all. I may even afford one before I make it big.

It comes preassembled in your choice of handcrafted Western Red Cedar or Redwood. It features interior lighting, temperature gauge, two wall air vents and TYLO or Amerec heater with rocks and controls. You could also opt for a front porch area with a bench for cooling down after your steam.

Alright, so I know its not barbeque season anywhere within the US, but for something like this, you better plan ahead as I would assume its not cheap. It’s a pop-up TV with a 4.1 sound system all built into what looks like a set of steps.

Honestly, when I first saw the picture I thought it was a set of steps with a built in TV and speakers, but nay, its bench seating with a 42” plasma and I quality audio system built in. You see, when I first looked at it, I thought at most a 20” screen, that’s where I got the steps idea from, but a 42” screen, and those are some mighty big steps.

If I had to guess, the black hold at the bottom is the bass port, and the small square black hold is for inputs or something like that. It automatically raises and lowers the TV on your command, and you can enjoy some television while you are swimming, hot-tubbing, barbequing, whatever it is you do outside for leisure. No word on price, or just how durable it is in terms of weather, personally though, I think it’d be cool inside too.

The best part being all the nifty gadgets you can buy to make your ‘back to the basics’ vacation not so basic after all.

The Intelligent Lantern would be one such gadget. It’s equipped with a digital clock, speakers, radio and an mp3 hookup. Not to mention its primary function… its light can be seen from over a mile away with its ‘dual articulating lanterns’.

This is definitely my kind of lantern. Not only does it serve its purpose but cuts down on space and equipment by serving several other purposes as well. If you know any camping enthusiasts you may want to add the Intelligent Lantern to your shopping list.

One of my favorite past times is riding my bike. I don’t do it nearly as much as I once did, and I’m actually a bit sorry for that. There’s just something relaxing about taking off down a country road that just can’t be duplicated. I can honestly say at no time did I ever consider using my bike wheels to display some type of message to passerbys.

Then again Lex wasn’t around back then either. Lex is a small device that attaches to the spokes of your bike and uses the rotation of your wheels to display a message of your choosing.

I suppose this would be an interesting way to display your number in a race, or perhaps advertise your services as a bike messenger. Lex comes with software to generate whatever message you wish via your computer and can run up to 96 hours on a single AA battery.

Sure, wireless speakers aren’t all that new, neither are outdoor speakers, but a smart combination of the two brought to you by Sharper Image, well that’s nearly a work of art. They use 2.4GHz signals, so you’ll have to make sure it doesn’t interfere with any of your other gear.

Other than that, all you need is an audio source that uses a standard headphone jack for its output. You can also by a second speaker, to make it stereo, its not another one of the main unit, it’s a special auxiliary speaker.

The initial setup, without the additional auxiliary speaker, will cost you $199.95. The auxiliary speaker is an extra $99.95 and looks to be another speaker like the main one. Both run on AC with an adapter that comes with it, or you can use 6 D batteries.
