Apple makes second attempt at Trojan Java block

Apple has released a second Java update as it attempts to block the Flashback trojan threatening Mac users. The second version, spotted by security firm Intego, is listed as "Java for OS X 2012-002" - its predecessor, pushed out earlier this week, was 2012-001 - and is only for OS X Lion 10.7 machines, rather than for Snow Leopard and Lion as before. MacBook Pro goes slim with quad-core this Spring

This summer we're very likely going to see MacBook Air slimness on Apple's line of heavier-duty MacBook Pro units, complete with Intel's Ivy Bridge quad-core processors in-tact. This information is gleaned from no less than Intel themselves, with news coming through that April 29th will be the date that they're ready to show the world what they're made of in both the mobile and desktop world. CPU World lets us know that two separate and trustworthy sources have now confirmed that this date late in April will be the delivery time for for desktop portion of this equation, with quad-core models Core i7 and Core i7 Extreme families in the pipeline. Air Display update will add HiDPI support for new iPad

Windows 8 release date foretells touch war with Apple

Microsoft has been tipped to be releasing their newest full version of a desktop operating system in Windows 8 this October, this leading analysts to suspect a MacBook Air Pro target in the wings for the software giant. As we saw quite plainly at the Consumer Preview for Windows 8 during Mobile World Congress 2012, Microsoft is certainly not being shy about showing the massive amount of devices their new OS will work on. Mountain Lion hasn’t mauled us insists Growl

Apple's Notification Center was one of our favorite elements in our OS X Mountain Lion preview, but third-party devs Growl claim not to be concerned that the big cat is moving on on their territory. In a blog post titled "Welcome to the party" the developers of the long-standing notifications tool for Macs deny that Growl is dead, and say that in fact they're looking into whether it can be integrated into Notification Center. Developers cautiously convinced by Apple Gatekeeper

Apple began its Mountain Lion Gatekeeper charm-offensive with developers last week, it's been revealed, though there remain concerns around whether non-Mac App Store apps will get the same advantages as those released through the official download store. Developers Panic have documented Apple's outreach efforts, co-founder Cabel Sasser having been invited to a preview session with Mountain Lion earlier in February, where the Cupertino company was keen to reassure him that it has no plans to make the Mac App Store the only way to get apps in OS X. Mountain Lion upgrade only way to keep Messages post-beta?

Apple Messages, the iChat replacement that integrates cross-platform text, video and photo messaging between Mac and iOS, will only be available for OS X Lion users until Mountain Lion is released this summer it's suggested. Having previewed Mountain Lion, Apple released the Messages beta yesterday for those with Macs running Lion to try the software out. However, according to Consomac's digging, the beta will only be valid until Mountain Lion's release, at which point users will apparently have to upgrade if they want to continue chatting. Apple’s Cook coy on touchscreen Mac

OS X Mountain Lion's reimagined iOS features may have brought Notifications Center and more gestures to the desktop, but Apple CEO Tim Cook is playing coy on whether an actual touchscreen will show up on Macs any time soon. Echoing former CEO Steve jobs dismissal of touchscreen desktop ergonomics, Cook told the WSJ that "this kind of reach for me isn’t a terribly intuitive thing" if dealing with a touch-enabled iMac.
