Orange: LTE across Europe by 2015

LTE is spreading far and wide in the United States, but what about Europe? Adoption has been slow on that side of the world so far. Orange are hoping to turn that around within the next three years, promising that it will bring LTE connectivity to all its European markets by 2015. UK 4G LTE in 2012 says Everything Everywhere

UK carriers Orange and T-Mobile plan to launch a 4G LTE network in the country later this year, combined comms company Everything Everywhere has announced, with 1800MHz trials kicking off in one city come April. Bristol will be the first to get 1800MHz LTE from the carriers, while Orange and T-Mobile subscribers across the UK will be able to use their 3G modem to get the best signal, no matter which of the two carriers they're with, from mid-March.

Apple's iPhone 4S has gone on sale in the UK, with Apple Stores and key carrier stores opening at 8am local time to offer the coveted fifth-gen smartphone. Meanwhile, deliveries of pre-ordered iPhone 4S units will take place today, while the US waits eagerly for its turn in a few hours time. The handset looks just like its predecessor, but inside everything's new with a dual-core Apple A5 chipset, 8-megapixel camera and World Phone connectivity.

UK carrier Orange is offering its customers a free iTunes movie rental each week, in a new promotion called Orange Film To Go. Offering a pre-selected title each Thursday, which can be accessed via either texting for a code or using Orange's new app, the rental is a standard iTunes download which can be started any time over the following 30 days (though expires 48hrs after first being played).

UK carriers band for NFC Payments joint venture

Four of the main UK carriers have banded together to work on mobile commerce, pushing NFC payments, digital coupons and mobile advertising. Everything Everywhere - the combined T-Mobile and Orange - along with Telefonica UK (aka O2) and Vodafone UK have formed a joint venture which will handle the sales, delivery and payment on top of which each carrier will build their individual services.

Orange Quick Tap NFC payments hands-on

NFC payment systems on cellphones have been making headlines recently, with Apple, Google and others all tipped to be considering their own schemes, but carrier Orange UK has decided to go one stage further and actually launch a contactless payments service. Operated in partnership with Barclaycard, and working with over 50,000 stores across the UK already equipped with NFC terminals - from names including McDonalds, EAT, Subway, Boots and others - Orange "Quick Tap" will launch in an affordable Samsung phone, the Tocco Quick Tap. We caught up with the carrier for a very conveniently paid-for coffee to find out how the system works.
