iPhone 4S hits UK

Apple's iPhone 4S has gone on sale in the UK, with Apple Stores and key carrier stores opening at 8am local time to offer the coveted fifth-gen smartphone. Meanwhile, deliveries of pre-ordered iPhone 4S units will take place today, while the US waits eagerly for its turn in a few hours time. HP Pre3 hits Orange UK support site

We already know some of the details on the coming HP Pre3 smartphone. The last time we talked about the Pre3 was in mid-July when the device was tipped to be running a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. The Pre3 is expected to hit the UK at the end of the month. The big question on the device so far has been what carrier it will land on. Orange Film To Go offers free iTunes movie rental each week

UK carrier Orange is offering its customers a free iTunes movie rental each week, in a new promotion called Orange Film To Go. Offering a pre-selected title each Thursday, which can be accessed via either texting for a code or using Orange's new app, the rental is a standard iTunes download which can be started any time over the following 30 days (though expires 48hrs after first being played). Nokia N9 due September 19 in Switzerland

The Nokia N9 has been dated for its Swiss release, with carrier Orange confirming that the MeeGo smartphone is expected to go on sale on September 19. UK carriers band for NFC Payments joint venture

Four of the main UK carriers have banded together to work on mobile commerce, pushing NFC payments, digital coupons and mobile advertising. Everything Everywhere - the combined T-Mobile and Orange - along with Telefonica UK (aka O2) and Vodafone UK have formed a joint venture which will handle the sales, delivery and payment on top of which each carrier will build their individual services. Orange Quick Tap NFC payments hands-on

NFC payment systems on cellphones have been making headlines recently, with Apple, Google and others all tipped to be considering their own schemes, but carrier Orange UK has decided to go one stage further and actually launch a contactless payments service. Operated in partnership with Barclaycard, and working with over 50,000 stores across the UK already equipped with NFC terminals – from names including McDonalds, EAT, Subway, Boots and others – Orange “Quick Tap” will launch in an affordable Samsung phone, the Tocco Quick Tap. We caught up with the carrier for a very conveniently paid-for coffee to find out how the system works.

Orange Launching Contactless Payments in Q2 For Europe

European carrier Orange announced today that the company will have NFC (near-field communications) services for contactless payments in the UK, Spain, France, and Poland starting from Q2 of this year. Carrier combo Everything Everywhere - Orange and T-Mobile UK - has announced a partnership with Barclaycard to roll out contactless mobile payments in the UK come Q2 2011. Carrier Orange is pushing for NFC (near-field communications) compliance on more than 50-percent of the new smartphones it offers by the end of 2011, as part of a greater drive to support the short-range wireless technology.
