Apple and carrier Orange have announced that their exclusivity agreement in France has ended prematurely, after telecoms regulators decided the deal was "a new rigidity factor in a sector that already suffers from lack of competition."  The news comes after a temporary injunction filed back in December 2008 - and later upheld in a review in February - following complaints from network rivals Bouygues Telecom and SFR.

Color us confused again.  While Orange claimed that in offering the iPhone 3GS in the UK in opposition to hitherto-exclusive rival O2 they'd "increase value" to buyers, some bizarre limitations in the terms & conditions have us wondering whether life really was better with O2.  As we pointed out earlier this week, Orange define "unlimited data" as 750MB; however there's also a potentially more limiting cap on what streaming and IM services - such as internet radio and Facebook messaging - can be used.

While we already knew that November 10th was the magic day when UK would-be Apple iPhone 3GS buyers would have a choice of not just O2 but also Orange as their network, until today we didn’t know exactly what they’d have to pay.  Now Orange have revealed iPhone 3GS pricing details, including a free 3GS on 24-month contracts of £45 ($74) upward, or a free 3G 8GB on a £30 ($49) 24-month contract.

Orange UK will begin selling the iPhone 3GS from November 10th, according to the Guardian, the day after rival carrier O2’s exclusivity agreement with Apple expires.  The launch will see two UK networks offering the smartphone in the run up to the holiday period, and while you might be tempted to think that anybody who wants an iPhone probably already has one, Orange have apparently had 200,000 people register their interest in the handset already.

Motorola have confirmed that their first Android smartphone, the Motorola DEXT, will arrive in the UK come Wednesday October 7th.  Stealing a leap on its US cousin, the Motorola CLIQ, the DEXT will be available exclusively to carrier Orange, and be priced at free to anybody willing to sign two years of their life away to a £34.26 ($55) per month contract.

After Orange’s announcement yesterday that they would be offering the iPhone 3GS in the UK, now comes word that Vodafone will be the third carrier in the country to sell Apple’s smartphone.  According to UK paper The Telegraph, the Vodafone iPhone 3GS is likely to be £100 cheaper ($159) after analysts predict a price war between carriers.

Update: Vodafone have confirmed the news; the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS will launch in the UK and Ireland in early 2010. [Thanks Dion!]

UK would-be iPhone users desperate to avoid O2’s network can take heart in the fact that rival network Orange have just announced they will be offering the iPhone 3GS later this year.  The Orange iPhone 3GS is yet to be priced, and nor have the company revealed the exact date it will go on sale, but there is a pre-interest page open for registrations.

The ROM update for the Orange version of the HTC Hero has been released, and is now available to download from HTC's UK support site.  Promising an increase in system speed, together with the addition of touch-to-focus in the Hero's camera, the new software has also been tested by Orange to ensure it's compatibility with their network.

ITG have launched a preorder page for their distinctive xpPhone, promising support for “the global three major 3G standards” from its integrated 3G chip.  Still unpriced, the xpPhone has a 4.8-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, AMD processor, WiFi b/g and Bluetooth, together with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.  Unlike most smartphones, though, the xpPhone runs Windows XP.
