I just mentioned the cool new Onkyo TX-SR608 3D ready AV receiver that Onkyo has debuted. The company is also offering up three new home theater in a box or HTiB systems at Onkyo calls them. Among the new HTiB systems is one that is 3D-ready called the HTX-22HDX (pictured).

The 22HDX doesn’t include the TV you see in the picture here, but it does include a 3D-ready AV receiver, a pair of front speakers, and a subwoofer. This may be the perfect system for those looking to go 3D without the room for full surround sound. The system has three HDMI 1.4 inputs, uses the Onkyo Theater-Dimensional processor for faux surround sound, and can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. The kit will ship in May for $349.

The HT-S3300 is a 5.1 HTiB system with HDMI, Dolby and DTS codecs capable of supporting Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. The S3300 will ship in March for $379. The S5300 adds an iPod dock to the S3300 features and supports 7.1 surround sound. The S5300 will ship in April for $599.

Onkyo has some of the best AV gear in the business and sits right at the top of my personal home theater wish list. Onkyo offers a wide range of gear including AV receivers and home theater in a box systems. Onkyo has debuted its latest AV receiver called the TX-SR608.

The 3D-ready receiver is a 7.2 channel THX-Select2 Plus certified receiver that uses a three-stage Darlington output topology to increase power from 90 to 100 watts. The receiver also uses an Audyssey DSX dimensional sound processor along with its Dolby PLIIz capability.

All input signals can be upscaled with the Faroudja DCDi cinema video processor to 1080p resolution via HDMI out. Upscaling applies to the PC input as well and the original source resolution of the content doesn’t matter. The receiver also has a front HDMI input and will ship in April for $599.

The TX-SA608 and TX-SA578 support seven channels of 190W and 160W respectively, along with Audyssey 2EQ, Audyssey Dynamic Volume and – on the SA608 only – Audyssey DSX support. They’ll go on sale by the end of March, priced at 84,000 and 71,400 yen respectively ($950 and $808 respectively).

The mini-systems, the BASE-V30HDX and BASE-V20HDX, come with two stereo speakers and a sub, but offer five channels of regular 30W output (and a 60W sub output) if you want to hook up the full surround set. Even without there’s virtual surround support, along with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. They’ll go on sale in Japan on March 24th, priced at 74,800 and 64,800 yen respectively ($846 and $733 respectively).

As for the HTX-22HDX, that has three HDMI inputs (and one output), together with various analog and digital inputs. As standard it offers two front stereo speakers and a sub, but there are outputs for a further center and rear speakers and in fact Onkyo have matching models to go with the set. Each regular speaker channel gets 50W, while the subwoofer gets 60W, and the system supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

Onkyo have outed their latest all-in-one desktop, the DE411, a dual-core Intel Atom 330 1.6GHz nettop with a 21.5-inch 1080p Full HD display. The Onkyo DE411 packs 2GB of RAM and a 320GB hard-drive, but most importantly it has NVIDIA’s GeForce 9400M – aka Ion – GPU for handling HD video.

There’s also a DVD burner, digital TV tuner (which we’re guessing is Japan-only), 5W stereo speakers (and 5.1 surround sound output) and a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. Onkyo also throw in WiFi b/g and gigabit ethernet, along with VGA and a clutch of USB 2.0 ports.

A multiformat memory card reader and matching peripherals round things out. Onkyo will be offering the DE411 for 89,800 yen in Japan ($984) which seems on the high side, especially since there’s no mention of a touchscreen layer; no word on if it’ll arrive in the US or Europe.

New from Onkyo at CES 2010 was the PA-MC5500 multi-channel power amplifier, intended to accompany their PR-SC5507 9.2-channel AV network controller preamp processor. The PA-MC5500 has a matching 9-channels of amplification to the company’s flagship pre-pro, each capable of delivering 150W.

The THX-certified nine channel powerhouse uses class AB amplification with a massive toroidal transformer and 22,000uF power supply capacitors. In addition, each channel is fine-tuned with audio-grade capacitors and WRAT technology to maximize signal accuracy. At the back of the unit there are balanced and single-end inputs with input trigger switchers, both of which are gold-plated, together with a 12v power trigger switch and speaker impedance switch to flip between 4 and 6 ohms.

The unit looks “ready to go” to our eyes, but according to the Onkyo rep we spoke to there’s no full specification information they can make public. Neither would they mention pricing and availability; looks like we’ll have to wait this one out.

Another week come and gone, time for a week in review so read along! It’s been a busy week (as always) with some cool stories you may have missed. We posted up our hands on review of the Barnes & Noble Nook last Sunday and it’s so cool. I want one of those so bad maybe I’ll break down and buy it if they ever get them in stock.

We learned that Acer is getting ready to launch some netbooks and nettops with NVIDIA Ion 2 power. I am sure we will hear more about the machines next month at CES. Intel axed plans for its Larrabee GPU after development delays hampered the project. I bet a party was going on over at NVIDIA when they heard.

Rumors that Amazon might be thinking about opening retail stores in the UK popped up early in the week. Naturally, Amazon won’t comment, but that would be interesting. Rumors started floating around that the DROID and HTC DROID Eris would be getting Android 2.1 updates on January 22.

That cool ZiiLABS Trinity smartphone platform turned up in a video demo showing off its 1080p video skills. This thing might make a cool smartphone when it hits the market. That ill fated and much anticipated CrunchPad was cancelled not long ago and the development partner Fusion Garage suddenly announced the JooJoo at $499 saying it would go on sale Friday.

AT&T unveiled an iPhone app this week called Mark the Spot with the goal of allowing iPhone users tell AT&T where the network was shoddy. I can sum it up without the app — pretty much everywhere. Projectiondesign whipped out the F35 projector with a massive 2560 x 1600 resolution. The projector is the first to offer that resolution and uses a TI DLP chip to do so.

That JooJoo tablet that will soon be embroiled in a legal battle landed in a hands on video. This thing is likely to be tied up in courts for a long time, if you want one you had better get is as soon as you can, I smell an injunction coming. Dell unveiled the Vostro V13 this week with the sexy Adamo style and profile at a much more affordable $450 price tag. The machine should prove very popular if the performance is decent.

The Acer Liquid A1 smartphone went on sale this week. The device is the first Snapdragon powered Android handset to launch and it reminds me more than a bit of my iPhone in its style. Radio Shack landed the Archos 5 8GB media tablet for $250. The thing is in stock for holiday delivery, or at least it was earlier this week.

The Motorola DROID and Acer Liquid A1 were both recipients of Android root this week. The root opens the door to more customization options for devs and users. The Qisda touchscreen router turned up this week in some FCC photos. The device sports YouTube and radio access.

Acer announced that its cool Ferrari One ultraportable was going on sale in the U.S. running a 1.2GHz Athlon processor. The machine has the Ferrari red color and prancing horse logo on the lid. Nuance unveiled Dragon Dictation for the iPhone and offered it for free. The app lets you speak your emails and texts.

Aluratek offered up a new eReader called the Libre eBook Reader Pro. It’s no Nook, but it’s cheap and available if you have your heart set on an eReader and don’t want the Kindle. We reviewed the Canon EOS 7D and found that it takes very good pictures and HD video.

An analyst this week claimed that the much rumored Apple Tablet was nearing mass production and was set for a February launch. How many times have we heard this same rumor now? The Motorola MILESTONE went on sale in the UK Thursday at retailer Expansys UK. The handset isn’t cheap at roughly $732 here in America.

I have fond memories of the early Nintendo Light Gun and shooting some ducks from my youth. Penguin offered up a new CrossFire Pistol for the Wii that might rekindle those memories even more for many of us. Two video unboxings of the Acer Liquid A1 turned up this week. The handset certainly looks cool.

Onkyo unveiled a new dual screen DX netbook this week with each screen sporting HD resolution the machine is even cheaper than the Kohjinsha DZ dual screen machine we have see so much of recently. A rumor tipped up this week from an insider who claims Foxconn is hard at work on a fourth gen iPhone. I wonder if the fourth gen device (assuming the rumor is true) will be for a network other than AT&T.

Game geeks are innovative for sure and one gamer has strapped a pico projector to a gun controller for some shooter action. It looks cool and I would like to try that out. The Logitech Squeezebox Touch has been postponed until February. The reason for the delay is unknown; Logitech only said it was an unexpected product delay.

Friday TechCrunch filed that suit we all expected against Fusion Garage over the JooJoo tablet. Obviously, the CrunchPad folks figure the JooJoo is a rip off of their failed CrunchPad. That’s it for this edition of the Week in Review, thanks for reading!

Alongside Onkyo’s rebadge of the Kohjinsha dual-display netbook yesterday, the company also announced a smaller system that should be familiar to MID-trackers. The Onkyo BX 407A4 is more recognizable as the UMID mbook M2, launched back in September, but while UMID couldn’t quite tell us when the M2 would be on sale, Onkyo are already taking orders for the BX-Series.

That means we have some confirmed specifications, at least for the BX 407A4, and it doesn’t make for particularly exciting reading for those would-be owners disappointed by the mbook M1’s meager RAM. The BX-Series uses an Intel Atom 1.2GHz processor with 512MB of RAM and a 32GB SSD, along with WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and a new optical joystick next to the 5-inch 1024 x 600 touchscreen.

Up to 7hrs of battery life is predicted, though that’s only if you leave the Onkyo idling; anything more demanding and the Windows XP mini-netbook will probably get around half of that. Onkyo are asking 64,800 yen ($729) for the machine, though importers are already adding their slice of gouge to that: GeekStuff4U have it at 79,000 yen ($889) which is frankly insane. UMID had suggested that a similar mbook M2 model, only with 8GB SSD and without the webcam of the Onkyo, would be around $499.

We can’t help but wonder whether Kohjinsha will be a little bit frustrated with Onkyo, who have rebranded the company’s nifty dual-display netbook but actually one-up’d the original by slotting in higher resolution panels. The Onkyo DX-Series has the same form-factor as the Kohjinsha DZ, which means a rotating pair of 10.1-inch LCD screens but the footprint of a regular netbook, only theirs uses two 1,366 x 768 panels rather than the original’s 1024 x 600.

We won’t argue with that, however, since a little more real-estate is never a bad thing. Otherwise the hardware specifications remain the same, which means you get AMD’s 1.6GHz Neo MV-40 processor paired with 2GB of RAM, a 320GB hard-drive and ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics. There’s also WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and a battery rated for 3.7hrs.

The price has risen, unsurprisingly, but not by as much as you’d maybe expect. Onkyo will be asking 84,000 yen ($956) when the DX-Series arrives in Japan come late December, while Kohjinsha want 79,800 yen ($908) for their model.

We’ve seen removable optical drives on nettops before now – ViewSonic had one back in July – but Onkyo’s offering is particularly curvy and pleasing. The Onkyo P305A3 may not have a catchy name but it does offer an Intel Atom 230 1.6GHz processor paired with an NVIDIA Ion graphics chipset, while the optical drive is detachable from the side.

There’s also 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard-drive and four USB 2.0 ports. Other connectivity includes eSATA and HDMI, together with optional WiFI, and the whole thing runs Windows 7 Home Premium.

To be fair, it’s arguably pointless to have a removable optical drive if it doesn’t result in a slimmer or lighter nettop overall, and the P305A3’s curved base means detaching the DVD burner won’t actually make it all that smaller. We’re also not impressed with the Atom 230 processor, and hope Onkyo replace it with – at the very least – the dual-core Atom 330. The nettop will go on sale in Japan on March 11th (which seems a very long way off) for 69,800 yen ($771) or with an HD 21.5-inch LCD for 89,800 ($992).

Press Release:

Onkyo Debuts Mid-Price THX Select2 Plus AV Receiver With Streaming Internet Radio Capabilities and DLNA 1.5 Networking Compatibility.

With the growing market for advanced internet radio services like Pandora, Rhapsody, Sirius Internet Radio, and vTuner, consumers increasingly seek to integrate their home entertainment systems with the internet.

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ (8/10/09) — Onkyo has introduced and begun shipping its first network-capable home theater receiver configured for Pandora, Rhapsody, and Sirius’ streaming internet radio services. The new Onkyo TX-NR807 also capable of playing computer music files from networked PCs, is fully compatible with the Digital Living Network Alliance’s DLNA 1.5 consumer electronics interoperability specification, and sells for less than half the price of the company’s previous network-capable model. With THX Select2 Plus certification and state-of-the-art processing from Dolby, DTS, Audyssey and Faroudja, the Onkyo TX-NR807 offers high definition audio and video performance. The TX-NR807 and non-networking TX-SR707, also introduced today, are Onkyo’s first receivers to offer Audyssey DSX soundstage extension processing in addition to Dolby Pro Logic IIz height-capabilities.

The Onkyo TX-NR807 connects directly to the internet or a home network via a rear-panel Ethernet port. The receiver’s on-screen user interface allows users direct access to Pandora, Rhapsody, Sirius Internet Radio, and vTuner streaming radio services, or to access MP3, WMA, FLAC, Lossless, Ogg Vorbis, and AAC files from any computer or storage device on the network. The receiver is Windows 7 compatible, and its Ethernet port can also be used for firmware updates.

The TX-NR807 also includes Onkyo’s new Bi-Directional Preprogrammed RI Remote Control which will impress anyone who has ever been frustrated by the trial-and-error manual data inputs and paper listings usually needed to program associated TV’s, disc players, cable boxes, and other components. Onkyo’s new system allows users to select from a on-screen list of compatible products, and then automatically transmit the codes from the receiver to the remote control. The remote also offers up to four macro programs for simultaneous activation of multiple components and feature sets.

As a premium home theater receiver, the TX-NR807 is also the perfect match for high definition video displays with Blu-ray players and other HD sources. It has six HDMI 1.3a inputs, 1080p video upscaling of all sources using the powerful Faroudja DCDi Cinema processor chip. On the audio side it has a full suite of surround processing, including lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

The Onkyo TX-NR807 is one of the first receivers to incorporate Audyssey DSX technology, which allows the back surround channels to be retasked for front-wide speakers to expand the width of the sounds stage, or for front height speakers to provide vertical ambience effects. The receiver also includes Audyssey MultiEQ room calibration technology, plus that company’s Dynamic Volume and Dynamic EQ processing. Dolby ProLogic IIz processing is also included to provide an alternate implementation of height channel technology.

The TX-NR807 has seven powerful 135-watts-per-channel Onkyo WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) amplifier sections for high output and low distortion, offering a dynamic power rating of 300 watts into 3 ohms. It has an extensive array of analog and digital inputs and outputs, including an MM/MC phono input. Its multiroom audio capabilities are similarly extensive with Powered Zone 2 and 3 capabilities, multiple DC triggers, bidirectional RS-232, and Onkyo’s exclusive Universal Port for connection of an optional iPod Dock and HD Radio tuner.

The Onkyo TX-NR807 is now shipping to Onkyo dealers and will have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $1,099.

Onkyo Debuts TX-SR707

Onkyo has also introduced the TX-SR707 THX-Select2 Plus home theater receiver, which has the same advanced high definition audio and video processing features as the TX-NR807, but uses a 7 x 100 Watts power amplifier section, Powered Zone 2, conventional preprogrammed remote control, and has no networking capabilities. The Onkyo TX-SR707 is currently available with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $899.

Press Release:

Onkyo Home Theater Packages Ideal for Blu-ray and HD Video Systems

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ (7/28/09) — Onkyo has introduced two new 7.1-channel home theater systems that deliver leading edge AV processing and surround sound reproduction for today’s most advanced home theater programming, including HDTV and Blu-ray. The HT-S7200 and HT-S6200 each feature powerful AV receivers with 1080p-compatible HDMI inputs, 130 watt-per-channel amplification, processing for every major audio format on the market – including the option of incorporating front height-channel reproduction with Dolby’s newly introduced ProLogic IIz processing. Each package also includes a high performance 7.1-channel speaker system with a powerful active subwoofer, and Onkyo’s exclusive U-Port single-cable iPod dock and charging system.

The Onkyo HT-S7200 and HT-S6200 feature five and four HDMI 1.3a inputs, respectively, and are completely compatible with 1080p HD video. The HT-S7200 also incorporates upscaling of component and composite video sources to 1080i, including Faroudja DCDi Edge deinterlacing to eliminate unwanted conversion artifacts. There is audio processing for every major surround format, including decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio lossless audio formats, as well as Dolby’s new ProLogic IIz algorithm, which introduces a third dimension to surround sound through the addition of a pair of ‘height’ channels above the front left and right channel speakers.

Onkyo’s HT-S7200 and HT-S6200 each include a full complement of seven speakers with attractive gloss black finishes and a powerful subwoofer for deep bass reproduction. The HT-S7200 speaker system features dual-drive tallboy front speakers consisting of dual 3-1/4-inch woofers and 1-inch balanced dome tweeter – that deliver a fuller mid-range while making a sleek visual statement – a horizontal center channel with the same drivers, and four surround speakers. In addition to its inclusion with the HT-S7200, this speaker system is also available separately as the standalone model SKS-HT870 speaker package. The HT-S6200 incorporates gloss finished bookshelf sized speakers with single 4-inch woofers and 1-inch balanced dome tweeter on the three front speakers and 3-1/4-inch full range speakers for the surrounds. Both systems derive deep bass sound effects from a powerful, 230-watt bass reflex subwoofer with a 10-inch woofer.

Both the Onkyo HT-S7200 and HT-S6200 include a trio of acoustic correction technologies: Audyssey 2EQ room correction and calibration system, Audyssey Dynamic EQ, and Audyssey Dynamic Volume. When used in combination with the 2EQ system, the latter dynamically adjust the receiver’s output to correct for room acoustics, listening position, and playback-level variations, delivering an overall experience much closer match to what the audio engineers originally intended.

The Onkyo HT-S7200 and HT-S6200 include Onkyo’s exclusive Universal Port (U-Port) which enables one-cable connection for the included UP-A1 iPod™ dock. This control and charging dock integrates both audio and video playback from Apple™ iPhone™ or iPod portable devices, greatly extending the flexibility of these systems to integrate consumers’ electronic entertainment devices. Additionally, the U-Port connection can also provide a one-cable connection to the company’s optional HD-Radio tuner, making it simple to bring this new transmission format to the home theater.

The Onkyo HT-S7200 and HT-S6200 are now available at suggested retail prices of $899 and $699 each, respectively. The SKS-HT870 7.1-channel speaker package is also now available at a suggested retail price of $499.

It seems like everyone is coming out with their own netbook these days, but those companies that have been in it since the beginning are seeing a greater need to update their lineups. And that’s exactly what we saw today from Onkyo.

Onkyo released their Sotec DC204A3 netbook today in Japan and it’s equipped with handling your various tasks on the go. It features an Atom processor, an Intel 945GSE Express chipset, Wi-Fi, a webcam, D-SUB, 1GB of RAM and more.

It also sports a 10.1-inch LCD display that supports a resolution of 1,024 x 600. It also comes with a 32GB SSD standard, rather than a hard drive. NVIDIA is nowhere in sight, either. The Sotec DC204A3 is currently only available in Japan for a starting price of the equivalent of $532.

Onkyo has debuted two new devices: one dock for iPod and iPhone that takes advantage of the U-Port (Universal Port) that is proprietary to Onkyo, and an HD radio. The iPod/iPhone dock uses the U-Port’s single cable connection for complete control of the docked device.

The Onkyo UP-A1 dock and charger for iPod lets users listen to content on their iPhone or iPod directly through their home theater entertainment system. The dock recharges the device, and allows the user to control the functions using their Onkyo AV receiver remote control. The dock is compatible with nearly every iPod and iPhone model, and is the first Onkyo dock to carry the Made for iPod certification. The UP-A1 dock and charger will be available in May for $109.

The Onkyo UP-HT1 HD Radio tuner will allow users an easy way to add HD Radio reception to a U-Port-equipped receiver. All control and display functions for the device are integrated into the receiver’s front panel and remote control. Users can also daisy chain more than one UP enabled device using the expansion option in the enclosure. The UP-HT1 will be available in July for $159.

Not everyone in need of an AV receiver or high end separate audio/video components, the value-pack Home-Theater-in-a-Box has its niche market for an entry-level Home Theater entertainment in a living room. Last Week, Onkyo unveiled the world’s first AV receiver with all new Dobly ProLogic IIZ sound effect, today, they are back with a pair of basic HTiBs – 5.1 channels HT-S3200 and 7.1 channels HT-S5200.

Both systems consist of an HDMI output audio/video terminal with pass-though or 1080P video to deliver Depp Color, x.V.Color, Audyssey Dynamic Volume and Dynamic EQ technologies with additional optical/coaxial digital connectivity. The 660-watt smaller sibling includes a 5.1 sound processing audio with 8-inch bass reflex subwoofer while the set-up model packs 7.1-channel audio with 1200-watt power. Additionally, it’s also better equipped with iPod docking station, Audyssey 2EQ room calibration and an 10-inch 290-watt bass unit.

The Onkyo HT-S3200 is available in black finish with a suggested retail price of $379. The Onkyo HT-S5200 will set you back $599 but has choices in both Black and Silver finishes.

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ (03/16/09) — Onkyo has introduced two entry-level home theater in a box (HTiB) packaged systems, each consisting of an HDMI-equipped audio-video receiver, five or seven surround-sound loudspeakers with subwoofer, and the top model includes an iPod docking station. When combined with a HDTV video display, Blu-Ray or DVD player, and cable/satellite TV box, these systems provide everything needed for a fully satisfying home theater surround sound experience.

“With the current economic climate, our high-value entry-level HTiB’s are doing quite well,” said Paul Wasek, Marketing Manager, Onkyo USA. “The addition of Audyssey technologies along with new DSP gaming modes and HDMI connectivity make these systems a real value for the consumer.”

Both systems include 1080p compatible HDMI connections, with HDMI Pass-Thru for optimal high definition video quality, including Deep Color and x.v.Color. For optimum sound quality, sources are connected via optical/coaxial digital connections, using a range of Dolby and DTS processing modes. There are four DSP gaming modes for rock, sports, action, and role-playing sound effects. The HT-S5200 incorporates Audyssey 2EQ™ room correction technology to automatically adjusts the sound character and time delay of each speaker relative to the listening positions, Audyssey Dynamic Volume™ which maintains optimal listening levels and dynamic range and Audyssey Dynamic EQ™ that adjusts the loudness contour on the fly to optimize sound quality for any volume, particularly at low listening levels. The HT-S3200 utilizes Audyssey Dynamic Volume and Dynamic EQ technologies.

The 1200 total watt 7.1-channel HT-S5200 uses powerful 130-watts-per-channel amplifiers that are perfectly matched to the included Onkyo Micro Fiber (OMF) speakers. A 10-inch 290-watt bass-reflex subwoofer adds bass depth and high-level excitement to movies and music. The HT-S5200 is Sirius satellite radio ready, includes Onkyo’s Music Optimizer to enhance the dynamic range of MP3 and AAC files which are normally compressed for headphone playback, and it has advanced Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES Discrete/Matrix surround sound processing capabilities. The system also includes a dedicated Onkyo iPod dock and charging station.

The more affordable 660 watt Onkyo HT-S3200 includes the model HT-R370 5.1-channel AV receiver with 110-watts per channel, three HDMI pass-through inputs, DTS and Dolby Digital surround processing, and five loudspeakers and an 8-inch bass reflex subwoofer that is powered by the receiver.

The Onkyo HT-S5200 is currently available in either black or silver finishes with a suggested retail price of $599. The Onkyo HT-S3200 is available in black with a suggested retail price of $379. Both systems include speaker wires and full-function remote controls.

Many moons ago, I have this thought of digital surround sound processing will get discrete vertical sound field over your head, from a pair of ceiling speakers, to create a much realistic Home-Theater experience in your living room. Dolby’s Lab has done it, but with a set of speakers above the front channels. A much logical solution without having to install speakers on your roof. The Dolby Pro Logic IIz now features up to 9.1 channels playback system that enhances the spaciousness of music, movies, and video games, and Onkyo is the first manufacturer to provide the new dimension sound effect with the introduction of TX-SR607 AV receiver.

Relax, the newly announced TX-SR607 will not cost you an arm and a leg. In fact, it’s rather affordable and is fully loaded model with an array of advanced HD audio and video processing from DTS-MA, Dolby True HD, Audyssey 2EQ , 1080P Faroudja, Deep Color, x.v Color, five plus one front input HDMI connectivity, but most strikingly, the first Dolby Pro IIz equipped 7.2-channel AV receiver at the suggested retail of $599!

Additionally, the unit enables analog video upconvert to HDMI; outputs power at 90 watts per channel; and has connectivity from a dual subwoofer line-outputs, dual component input video and a proprietary rear-panel universal port for upcoming HD Radio Tuner/iPod Dock.

If you are hesitating about an extra set of front speakers, Onkyo also introduces a pair of entry-level TX-SR307 and TX-SR507 Av receivers alongside the 607 without the Dolby Pro Logic IIz at the suggested retail of $299 and $399, respectively. Both will be available from March and a month later for the 607.

Onkyo targets value-conscious consumers with a Spring 2009 AV Receiver line-up offering new technologies, features, and performance not previously available at these prices.

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ (3/12/09) – As the first installment of its 2009 product line-up, Onkyo has introduced three new home theater receivers, including the world’s first to offer Dolby’s new ProLogic IIz processing, which can produce sound effects above the listener’s head. Theses models, which range in price from $299 to $599, also include an array of advanced HD audio and video technologies from Onkyo, Dolby, DTS, Audyssey, Faroudja, and others that were previously only available at higher price points. The TX-SR607 features six HDMI inputs, and is the first AV receiver with a front-panel HDMI input.

With the debut of the new TX-SR607 receiver, Onkyo has the distinction of becoming the world’s first manufacturer to launch a 7.2-channel home cinema receiver featuring the all-new Dolby Pro-Logic IIz mode. Designed to take home cinema sound to new heights (literally!) DPL IIz introduces a vertical aspect to the sound field through the addition of left and right-channel front height speakers mounted above the main speakers. Based on the initial positive reactions to demonstrations of this technology to dealers, Onkyo anticipates good demand for expanded height channel capabilities in future models.

“We are very excited to be the first audio manufacturer to utilize this exciting new surround format from Dolby,” comments Onkyo USA marketing manager Paul Wasek. “It adds a new realm of audience involvement in three dimensions, with surprise aircraft flyovers triggering the ‘duck’ reflex. Onkyo has launched this technology on our most popular AV receiver, rather than our most expensive, in order to reach out to a much larger customer base. The company’s premium receiver lineup, which will roll out over the Summer, will include expanded height-channel capabilities, internet radio and network audio technologies at lower price points.”

These new models are well equipped for Blu-ray and other HD audio and video source components, with HDMI repeaters plus Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio processing in the TX-SR607 and TX-SR507. The entry-level TX-SR307 has HDMI pass-through switching on three inputs, while all three models support 1080p, Deep Color, and x.v.Color.

All of these receivers use Audyssey 2EQ, an automatic calibration system which corrects each channel’s output in both frequency and time domains based on measurements at three unique listening positions, Audyssey Dynamic Volume technology, which optimizes the dynamic range of listening material at any listening level, and Audyssey Dynamic EQ, which corrects problems associated with reduced sound quality at low listening levels.

Onkyo has also developed four new exclusive gaming modes designed to enhance the listener’s experience when using video game systems. Players can select from Rock, Sports, Action, or Role Playing game modes to match the gaming content. These new modes will immerse all the players in the action like never before.

The Onkyo TX-SR607 and TX-SR507 are the first to use the company’s new proprietary rear-panel universal port, which simplifies the connection for Onkyo’s forthcoming HD Radio Tuner and iPod Dock that will be available in late spring. The 5.1-channel TX-SR307 and TX-SR507 have 65- and 80-watts per channel amplifiers respectively, while the 7.2-channel TX-SR607 is rated at 90 watts per channel, has dual subwoofer line-outputs, upconverts all analog sources to HDMI via Faroujda DCDi technology, and is Sirius Satellite Radio ready.

The Onkyo TX-SR307 and TX-SR507 will be available in March, and the TX-SR607 in April with suggested retail prices of $299, $399, and $599 respectively.

Onkyo Japan have announced [pdf link] new entry-level versions of their HDC-1.0 Audio PC. The new range now takes advantage of Intel’s Atom 230 1.6GHz processor, paired with 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard-drive, DVD burner and six USB 2.0 ports. However there are several missing features compared to the full HDC-1.0 system, of which the most noticeable is the integrated audiophile amplifier.

Three versions are available, ranging from the HDC-1L which simply includes the desktop PC, Windows XP and Onkyo’s own software suite, through the HDC-1LGX with two 15W speakers, to the HDC-1LGX/19W1 which adds a 19-inch 1,440 x 900 LCD display. The original had a dedicated amp with PCM1792 digital to analog convertor, plus analog, digital coaxial, optical inputs and outputs and a DVI output supporting HDCP.

Still, you’ll save considerably. While the original Audio PC retailed at around 200,000 yen ($2,149), the range now starts at just 59,800 yen ($643).

Audio snob, now you can listen to your Ipod with a portable and high-fidelity wireless stereo earphone system. Onkyo wants to preserve the originality of audio playback, unlike Bluetooth technology with compressed audio; their MHP-UW2 wireless system uses an uncompressed and robust 2.4Ghz digital connection, promises to deliver truly CD quality sound over the air.

The transmitter weights in 35 grams and is made compatible with Ipod classic, Touch, Nano and Mini and has audio inputs for other portable audio devices. The system draws its power from Lithium-ion batteries with ability to playback music for 8 hours of continuous use. Recharging takes 3 hours via conventional AC adaptor or USB. The weight of the headphone includes the batteries is about 105 grams. The Onkyo MHP-UW2 will be released in November for 20,00 yen ($200).

Announced last month, two mid-range audio video receivers from Integra are ready to ship to your neighborhood custom reinstallers. DTR-7.9 upgrades from 7.8 now featuring THX Ultra2 Plus certification, Faroudja DCDi chip for a full 1080p upsizing over HDMI and extra pair of 1.3a HDMI to a total of 5 HDMI outputs. So you get the new features set at the same price of $1,300.The catch? It’s now Made in Malaysia instead of Japan.

If you only need 4 hdmi input sources, less power outputs and could care less about THX Neural Surround Processing or THX Ultra2 Plus gimmick; then save $300 by getting the DTR 6.9. Integra is Onkyo’s premium line. As Lexus is to Toyota, Integra is to Onkyo. If you can’t locate Integra retailer, try local electronic chain stores for Onkyo TX-SR 806 and TX-SR 706. They don’t dress up the same but internal components are practically similar and affordable too.

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ (9/18/08) — Integra, the first company to build audio-video receivers designed specifically for custom installers, has announced that it is now shipping two new receivers engineered to meet demanding technical requirements of THX’s new Ultra2 Plus and Select2 Plus certification standards. Both have 1080p video upscaling and advanced two-zone capabilities.

The Integra DTR-7.9 is THX Ultra2 Plus certified for large-room applications with a powerful 130 watts-per-channel amplifier, five HDMI inputs, and upscaling for component video inputs. The Integra DTR-6.9 is THX Select2 Plus certified with 100 watts per channel and four HDMI inputs. Both include the new THX Loudness Plus processing which improves the listener’s aural experience at moderate and low volume levels.

These receivers use Audyssey’s highly regarded MultEQ room correction technology to automatically set optimal speaker levels and time delay for any given room. They also add Audyssey’s new Dynamic EQ circuitry, which corrects the surround channel equalization and level relative to volume levels.

As the audio and video control centers for advanced home theater installations, these receivers are fully compatible with HDMI v. 1.3a, including 1080p and Deep Color™ 36-bit video signals. They include Faroudja DCDi Cinema HDMI upscaling to 1080p, and the DTR-7.9 also includes component video upscaling to 1080i. Both receivers feature onboard decoding for the Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio lossless audio formats specified for Blu-Ray disc formats.

Like all Integra products, the DTR-7.9 and DTR-6.9 include comprehensive packages of features specifically tailored to the needs of custom installers, including Ethernet ports for integration with Network-based control systems such as E-Control™ and AMX Device Discovery™. These two-zone receivers also include bi-directional RS-232, RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) system control integration over HDMI, programmable 12-volt triggers, dual IR inputs, and three unique assignable IR code sets. The back channels can be reconfigured for powered Zone 2 or front-channel bi-amping for large speakers. Because these receivers will frequently be set up by professional installers, the customized dealer settings can be independently stored for easy recall.

The Integra DTR-7.9 and DTR-6.9 are both now available with manufacturer’s suggested retail prices of $1,300 and $1,000 respectively.

Integra designs and manufactures premium Home Theater receivers, processors, amplifiers, and DVD players that are specifically designed to meet the needs of custom audio/video systems installers. Systems integration and convergence technology protocols include RS-232, IR and on-board Ethernet for network connectivity and TCP/IP control. Integra has access to vast technical resources, and bears a proud heritage of 60 years of audio engineering excellence.

Onkyo have announced a number of new home entertainment products, including two THX-certified receivers and two new “Home Theater in a Box” systems. The receivers – the TX-SR806 and TX-SR706 – both include the new THX Loudness Plus audio processing technology for improved low-volume-level listening, while the SR806 has THX Ultra2 Plus certification and the SR706 has Select2 Plus certification. Each can upscale HDMI digital video sources to a 1080p output courtesy of the Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processor, and the SR806 can also upscale analog sources to 1080i.

The SR806 has five HDMI 1.3a repeater sockets while the SR706 does with one less; both also have Music Optimizer technology that aims to get the best sound quality out of compressed digital music, and the ability to power a separate stereo speaker pair in a second room while still listening to 5.1 surround sound in the main room. An FM/AM radio is included, together with connections for XM and Sirius satellite radio, and a learning remote control.

Press Release

Onkyo’s Mid-year Product Launch Includes Two THX Home Theater Receivers and Two New HTiB Packaged Systems

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ (7/22/08) – Onkyo USA has introduced two mid-price home theater receivers and two packaged home theater systems, as part of its mid-year new product announcements. Both receivers are THX certified and include the new THX Loudness Plus audio processing technology for improved low-volume-level listening. All of the new models include expanded HDMI connectivity, Faroudja DCDi video processing capabilities, Audyssey room acoustics correction and Dynamic EQ, and Onkyo’s Music Optimizer for improved sound from heavily compressed digital sources.

“These new models represent solid gains in performance, versatility, and convenience in the mid-price market,” said Paul Wasek, Onkyo’s marketing manager. “They give consumers the ability to attain optimal performance with all the newest AV sources and high definition video screens at an affordable price. We have added more HDMI inputs with greater use of Faroudja DCDi technology to provide high definition video. The THX certified models now have THX Loudness Plus processing for improved sound quality at quieter listening levels. Overall, these receivers and HTiB systems represent an incredible value in terms of price and performance.”

The Onkyo TX-SR806 and TX-SR706 home theater receivers have THX Ultra2 Plus and Select2 Plus certification respectively, and both include the new THX Loudness Plus technology. The TX-SR806 and TX-SR706 have five and four HDMI 1.3a repeater inputs respectively to allow optimal HD audio and video performance with the full spectrum of Blu-ray, cable, game, and satellite sources. The sophisticated Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processor circuits can upscale HDMI digital video sources to a 1080p output, and dramatically improve the resolution of analog video signals compared to the source. The TX-SR806 also provides up-conversion to 1080i for the analog component video output.

Onkyo’s new HT-S7100 and HT-S6100 HTiB packaged systems each consists of a home theater receiver, seven-channel loudspeaker system, powered subwoofer, and iPod dock. In addition, the HT-S7100 includes two stylish speaker stands. The system receivers have four HDMI inputs with video upscaling to 1080i via Faroudja DCDi Edge technology. The premium audio processing includes DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD, Audyssey 2EQ room acoustics correction, and Audyssey Dynamic EQ loudness correction.

The Onkyo TX-SR706 receiver is now available with a suggested retail price of $899. HT-S7100 and HT-S6100 systems are also currently available with suggested retail prices of $899 and $799 respectively. The TX-SR806 will have a suggested retail price of $1,099, and it will be shipping in mid August.

Onkyo, which takes its name from the Japanese “On” meaning ’sound’ and “Kyo” meaning ‘harmony,’ has been producing precision audio components for over a half-century.

Having hopped resolutely onto the HD-DVD bandwagon – and then promptly jumped back off again when the format started to slide – Onkyo is stepping back into the high-definition home entertainment market with their first Blu-ray player. Details are scant (including an absence of pictures – don’t Onkyo know that nobody reads any more?) but they’ve confirmed that the new player will go happily hand-in-hand with their latest AV receivers.

That means full HDMI, support for 1080p high-definition video and, when it comes to surround sound, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio catered for. It’s expected later this year.

Onkyo will likely be hoping for better sales success than with their HD-DVD machine. Only 2,000 of the DV-HD805, which cost $899, were apparently sold.

Onkyo are set to release a new home entertainment system that seems to be aimed at people unsure whether they want extra wires and rear speakers. The GKW-2.1HD consists of two 30W front stereo speakers, a 60W subwoofer and control unit, and a remote. Out of the box it supports 2.1HD audio, but add a few extra speakers and you’ll have a full 5.1-channel surround sound setup.

Connectivity is primarily via HDMI 1.3, with two inputs and a single output. There are also connections for adding in the extra surround speakers. The GKW-2.1HD is compatible with Dolby NR TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and uses 24-bit/192kHz DACs.

Onkyo expect it to hit shelves on June 21st. It’ll be priced at around €330 ($509).

Onkyo’s latest mini-HiFi system, the X-NX10A, might look pretty mainstream (although that color LCD is on the large size), but its demure appearance hides a few pleasantly up-to-date features. For a start, there’s an 80GB hard-drive that you can rip CDs to or, via a USB port, copy across your existing digital music files. An ethernet port also allows the HiFi to look up track and artist information online, or download (non-DRM) tracks directly.

The X-NX10A is compatible with MP3, PCM and ATRAC audio files (which seems a little limited), and you can transfer album art over to display while tracks are playing. Onkyo have also used a floating-mount for the hard-drive, intended to reduce vibrations and electrical noise. Other products from the company that have the RI (Remote Interactive) connection can be linked to the X-NX10A, and music transferred across (e.g. from cassette or vinyl).

Each speaker has a 13cm medium cone and 3cm tweeter, delivering 26W each. The Onkyo X-NX10A should be on sale late next month, priced at around €450 ($698).

Starting with the TX-SR606, then the TX-SR576, and lastly the TX-SR506, all packing 7.1 capabilities, HDMI ports, Dolby and DTS technologies, and not a single one prices below $500. For Onkyo, the $800 price tag of the most expensive of the three is comparatively affordable.

They make some of the best audio components on the market and as such most of their kit hits well over the thousand dollar price point for each component. Occasionally you can catch one of their cheaper HTIB systems for a reasonable price but those only give you a small taste of what the company’s entire offerings are capable of.

Now, back to these three units, they all push out either 130 or 140 watts per channel which should be more than enough to drive your speakers, they all have 3 HDMI inputs, and they support the following audio technologies: Dolby Digital EX, Dolby ProLogic IIx, DTS-ES, DTS 96/24, and DTS Neo:6. The top of the line of the three, the TX-SR606 also supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio as well as Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD, Bi-Amping capabilities, and video upscaling to 720p or 1080i.

All of the receivers are optimized for MP3 and AAc tracks and include Audyssey Dynamic EQ loudness correction, so your audio sounds less crappy when compressed. All of them are also iPod-Compatible and the TX-SR606 also has RIHD functionality. All three will be available next month in your choice of Black or Silver, for a quick price recap, the 606 is about $800, the 576 is about $600, and the 506 is about $500.

Little did I know about Onkyo line of HD HTPC products in US, but they already on 2nd generation releases in Japan with the announcement of APX-2. The new HD audio PC is a joint venture effort with the Japanese PC company, SOTEC as distribution store front.

The APX-2 is probably not what you think of just-another-HTPC product or a Hi-Def media player. In fact, i believe the HD audio is referring to audiophile quality. The ambitious demonstration of APX-2 coupled with B&W Nautilus 801 picture said enough right? The greatest feature of all is probably a built-in 2 channels digital amplifier, with ability to handle 4 Ω impedance with maximum power output at 100w each. The digital power output stage is merely a palmed-size amplifier about 3 times smaller than a traditional transformer.

The Digital to Analog conversion is handled by PCM1792. To avoid interference, an external AC adapter is provided to use for PC operation, while the amplifiers and audio circuit get the power from a separated but built-in power unit. The Apx-2 like most PC features hard drive to storage media content, but it’s keep in a Super Floating HDD unit to eliminate operation noise and vibration.

Do you know how many CE manufacturers that are really supported HD-DVD and what they have in common? The RCA, Xbox 360, Venturer and Onkyo are all rebadged or manufactured by Toshiba, not counting the Korean Giants with combo player like LG and Samsung. The RCA went back to legacy DVD, Venture didn’t sell well and the word on the street is Onkyo is pulling out as well.

The information is vague to say the least, but Onkyo has decided against bringing their first and possibly last HD-DVD player, DV-HD805 to the UK. Although no further words on US’s front if they are discontinuing the product, it’s signaling the already weakening Format at Europe even further. If you are counting, there isn’t any new HD-DVD hardware announced at CES 2008 this year. Toshiba is deep in a hole trying to keep the crumbling Format alive, both software and hardware wise.

The company did disclose a new HD source will be revealed later this year but cannot confirm it will be a Blu-ray, HD-DVD or combo player. Frankly, with the growing rate of Blu-ray popularity these days, i’ll bet my two cents on Combo or Blu-Ray.

Onkyo and their premium line of Integra product are issuing firmware updates for current line of A/V receiver and processor that utilizes Silicon Optic Reon HQV. It’s not available to public or downloading online and owner is required to sign a waiver, fax the paperwork and they will send you the updater in the mail.

The executable updater will run on Windows only via RS232 connector in the back. It fixed black level issues, OSD and added Picture controls to Reon HQV. There are additional unconfirmed hardware updates required works done on authorized service center. If you have the following products from Onkyo/Integra and the display feature is lacking picture controls, it’s time to give them a call.

Onkyo and Onkyo Pro, TX-SR875,TX-NR905,PR-SC885P

Integra, DTR 8.8, DTC 9.8

So it comes with 7 speakers, a subwoofer, a receiver, and a DVD player that does a bit of up converting. The receiver is XM and Sirius ready too.

On top of that, there is an included iPod Dock. The receiver has HDMI v1.3, a ton of stuff from the folks a Dolby is all integrated.

They are calling this the budget 7.1 system, and from Onkyo, I reckon $1099 would be a budget system, but damn! That’s still a chunk of change, I bet it sounds like a little slice of heaven though.
