O2 sharing phone numbers for mobile surfers (but not everyone)

UK carrier O2 finds itself embroiled in data protection controversy today, with allegations that the operator is revealing mobile users cellphone number to each website they visit on their phone. According to Lewis Peckover, buried in among the header data from each O2 visitor is a line revealing their own mobile number; he set up a site to show off just what O2 is including. However, while some O2 users are corroborating the claims, our own tests have failed to do so. O2 starts new lease plans for iPhone 4S

Rogers, Vodafone and O2 add to Carrier IQ denials

The quest to dig up the extent of Carrier IQ use in smartphones continues, with more carriers leaping to extricate themselves from the privacy maelstrom. Canada's Rogers Wireless joins Verizon as the North American carriers in insisting that no Carrier IQ software is present on its devices, with a company spokesperson taking to Twitter to confirm that it has investigated handsets and found no evidence of the monitoring tool. O2 London LTE trial promises 100Mbps to lucky few

O2 has launched its first 4G LTE network in the UK, kicking off a trial of the high-speed service in London that will offer testers up to 100Mbps. The scheme will run for nine months, with 25 sites going live in November and that being ramped up until a total combined area of 40km gets service. iPhone 4S hits UK

Apple's iPhone 4S has gone on sale in the UK, with Apple Stores and key carrier stores opening at 8am local time to offer the coveted fifth-gen smartphone. Meanwhile, deliveries of pre-ordered iPhone 4S units will take place today, while the US waits eagerly for its turn in a few hours time. The handset looks just like its predecessor, but inside everything's new with a dual-core Apple A5 chipset, 8-megapixel camera and World Phone connectivity. Read The Full Story

HTC Rhyme hits O2 UK October 17

HTC UK has confirmed that the Rhyme will be launching exclusively on carrier O2, with the handset hitting shelves on October 17. The Android Gingerbread smartphone, announced a short time ago for Verizon Wireless in the US, will be offered in the same plum purple, runs HTC Sense 3.5, and will be bundled with a desk cradle, light-up notification "charm" and several Bluetooth accessories, among other things. UK carriers band for NFC Payments joint venture

Four of the main UK carriers have banded together to work on mobile commerce, pushing NFC payments, digital coupons and mobile advertising. Everything Everywhere - the combined T-Mobile and Orange - along with Telefonica UK (aka O2) and Vodafone UK have formed a joint venture which will handle the sales, delivery and payment on top of which each carrier will build their individual services. Palm Pre Plus gets webOS 2.1.0 update in Germany

HP's suggestion that older webOS devices wouldn't be seeing 2.x updates seems to have been overly cautious: an upgrade to webOS 2.1.0 is now available for the Palm Pre Plus on O2 Germany. According to the support page, Pre Plus owners can punch their serial number into a webOS doctor to find out if they're eligible; unfortunately right now that means only O2 Germany handset owners get the update. O2 WiFi promises free UK wireless access for all

Altruism in the hotspot space? Certainly seems that way this morning, with carrier O2 announcing O2 WiFi, a public hotspot service that will offer free connectivity in venues across the UK no matter what cellphone or broadband provider you're using. There won't be national coverage to begin with, of course, but O2 is targeting "at least double" BT Openzone and The Cloud's premium hotspots combined by 2013. Read The Full Story

HTC 7 Pro finally on sale (in Germany)

The HTC 7 Pro has gone on sale in Germany, both on carrier O2 and as an unlocked, SIM-free device. According to HTC Germany, the Windows Phone 7 smartphone will be priced at €29 ($39) on a new, €22.50 ($30) per month, two-year agreement, or alternatively €599 ($796) contract-free.
