O2 rolling out free WiFi across London

Getting online during the Olympics in London will probably be a chore thanks to the jammed mobile networks, but companies are doing their best to roll out free WiFi across the city. Recently, Virgin equipped multiple Tube stations with free WiFi access on platforms, and now O2 has announced that it will be rolling out free WiFi access outdoors in certain parts of the city. O2 offering 10% discount for outage victims

The O2 network outage affected millions of customers across the UK last week, and naturally users weren't too pleased. As a result, O2 has stepped forward to offer up compensation to all the customers that were affected. On its blog, the carrier notes that 10% will be offered off of July’s bill, which will be applied in September. O2 restores 2G and 3G network connectivity

UK carrier O2 was stricken by a network outage affecting 2G and 3G service yesterday, with the network finally managing to restore 2G service this morning. Now the carrier has updated its network status to say that 3G service has been restored. Carrier O2 is beginning to recover from its embarrassing network failure, after suffering more than seventeen hours of voice and data downtime in some areas of the UK. Faults first began registering around midday on Wednesday, with O2 phones unable to connect; as of 8am BST today, O2 has confirmed that its 2G service is back online for those customers affected, which means incoming and outgoing calls should be functional. O2 and Vodafone partner on infrastructure for 4G future

UK carriers O2 and Vodafone have announced a new collaboration on 2G, 3G and 4G infrastructure, which will see the companies pool basic network infrastructure in an attempt to speed LTE's arrival. Under the scheme - which is also expected to save both carriers money in the long run - O2 and Vodafone will each continue running independent spectrum and competing services, sharing maintenance duties for the basic hardware and decommissioning unnecessary base-station sites. The Galaxy S III has been revealed this week in London as Samsung's next-level smartphone hero, and the prices are flooding in for UK carriers galore. Starting with Vodafone UK, this carrier gets the device on the 30th of this month (as opposed to the 29th as the rest of Europe will get the device) and will be getting an exclusive on the 32GB model of the device for the first month it's out on the market. UK carrier O2 has apparently fixed the loophole that exposed subscribers' mobile numbers to websites they visited using their handset's data connection, though there's still no official explanation as to how the issue arose. Controversy sparked earlier today, when one O2 subscriber realized browsing sites via his phone's data connection transmitted his number in among the header data; a proof-of-concept site prompted the expected outcry against the carrier.
