NVIDIA Console Mode closes case on legacy machines

NVIDIA Console Mode closes case on legacy machines

Engineers at NVIDIA have taken the time this week to reveal a collection of new abilities for their SHIELD device, perhaps the most symbolic of these being a new "Console Mode". This mode for the device allows the user to close the top on the handheld device and run its display through a mini-HDMI port on its back. While this mode was (sort of) available before today via the same HDMI port (thanks to the idea from Nyko), starting this week the ability also outputs to full HD 1080p and is able to work optimized with a Nyko PlayPad Pro controller.

NVIDIA SHIELD GameStream hands-on with Console Mode

NVIDIA SHIELD GameStream hands-on with Console Mode

A compelling use-case for NVIDIA's SHIELD device has appeared this week at the company's gaming week in Montreal: Console Mode. While we've seen this sort of ability working before, this version works with the branded functionality GameStream, the all-encompassing term for streaming content to and from SHIELD. With this push, NVIDIA SHIELD will be streaming a PC game from a GeForce GTX-toting PC (with the top closed, even), while a Bluetooth controller is connected to control the machine and the content is run out to a big-screen TV via HDMI.

NVIDIA SHIELD as mini game console: hands-on with Nyko PlayPad Pro

The folks at Nyko have made a surprise one-two hit today with a variety of accessories that are aimed in the public eye directly at such next-generation devices as NVIDIA SHIELD. What we're seeing right here is the functionality described in our first presentation of their new SHIELD dock, but without the dock. Here we've got NVIDIA's SHIELD working as a miniature Android-based game console attached to an HDTV with a Nyko PlayPad Pro as a controller connected with Bluetooth.

Nyko turns NVIDIA SHIELD into mini console with simple dock setup

The folks at Nyko have decided E3 to be the perfect place to let it be known that they're on-board with NVIDIA and their soon-to-be-released SHIELD gaming device for accessories from the get-go. With a SHIELD Dock aside a Travel and Shell Case as well as a Power Kit, Nyko will be ready for the push as it comes on extremely soon. These accessories will be released what we must assume will be just a bit after NVIDIA's own in-house releases.

If you are a big fan of the Xbox 360 and you have a Kinect sensor you want to use but don’t have the space to play with it the Zoom for Kinect made by Nyko may be the answer you need. I have talked about this lens accessory a few times now and it is a very simple and cool way to reduce the room you need to use the Kinect with accuracy. I know I need one of these for my house because the Kinect never works in the room we play it in because of the small space available.

Nyko Zoom for Kinect to launch August 23

Nyko Zoom for Kinect to launch August 23

About a month ago, I mentioned the interesting Nyko Zoom for Kinect accessory that had debuted. The device is a special clip on lens accessory for the Kinect that greatly reduces the amount of room you need in your space to play Kinect games. I know that in the room where the Kinect was in our house we didn't have enough space to use it with accuracy so we just never used it.

Nyko outs another 3DS accessory called Game Boost

I don't know about you, but any time my iPhone or other game console runs out of power on the go, it's generally right at the point where I am about to win a race or beat a certain boss. That makes the device turning off on its own doubly sucky. Nyko has been trotting out a lot of new Nintendo 3DS peripherals at E3 and the latest of them is called the Game Boost.
