NVIDIA Editor’s Day 2013 Wrap-up: G-Sync, 4K, and gaming’s blurred lines

Though the event continues to be called "Editor's Day", this week we had an extended stay with NVIDIA in Montreal, learning about the company's newest in gaming development and hardware innovation. The biggest news of the event was surely the unveiling of G-Sync, a hardware module made by NVIDIA to be planted in the backs of high-end gaming monitors, making their functions slave to GeForce GTX graphics cards, but that wasn't the only big push made by the company for industry. Also making appearances were NVIDIA SHIELD, development initiatives through GameWorks, and some of the biggest names in game development today.

Destiny has BUNGIE teaming with NVIDIA GameWorks for OptiX technology

This week we've heard quite a bit about NVIDIA's aim to bring details on their GameWorks development and optimization program to the public, amongst these such high-powered features as OptiX. What Optix represents is an SDK (a software development kit) for the creators of next generation's games - games like Destiny from the developers at BUNGIE. Spilling well into tomorrow's platforms with graphics optimizations today, BUNGIE is taking advantage of the likes of Interactive Ray Tracing, Ambient Occlusion, Procedural Surfaces, and Light Baking.

Star Citizen hands-on with 4K: rolling in space on pre-release

In what's essentially a very, very early build of Star Citizen here at NVIDIA's Montreal 2013 event, we've gotten the opportunity to get up-close and hands-on with the likes of 4K output. This game isn't out on the market yet - it's still rolling in funding cash, in fact, having just reached a $23 million dollar point this week. We've found this game rolling out on a massively powerful dual-card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titans, as it were) gaming build from Maingear - the same we saw yesterday kicking out the jams with Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. Here we're also seeing some fabulous NVIDIA-pushed next-generation development taking full effect as well.

This week the folks at NVIDIA unveiled several pieces of technology not many could have predicted, but one thing sticks as it is with essentially any of the company's gaming events: a brand new graphics card was shown. This card goes by the name NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti, and though we've not got one whole heck of a lot of detail on it yet, we do know that it'll be presented as a "high-end enthusiast" graphics card in the near future.

NVIDIA SHIELD GameStream hands-on with Console Mode

A compelling use-case for NVIDIA's SHIELD device has appeared this week at the company's gaming week in Montreal: Console Mode. While we've seen this sort of ability working before, this version works with the branded functionality GameStream, the all-encompassing term for streaming content to and from SHIELD. With this push, NVIDIA SHIELD will be streaming a PC game from a GeForce GTX-toting PC (with the top closed, even), while a Bluetooth controller is connected to control the machine and the content is run out to a big-screen TV via HDMI.

This week the folks at NVIDIA have done a demonstration of G-Sync with the G-Sync Module, their newest in graphics technology to drive forward the universe of gaming graphics. Here we're seeing a G-Sync-equipped ASUS monitor next to a unit without, the both of them running the same technology otherwise. This piece of hardware - hidden here - is the G-Sync module, turning the monitor into a slave to the graphics processor inside the PC.

NVIDIA G-Sync module kills gaming monitor tearing

NVIDIA has revealed G-Sync, a new module for gaming monitors that, when used with a GeForce GPU, helps avoid tearing and skipping. The new hardware, shown off by NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang at the company's Editor's Day in Montreal, works around the limitations of V-Sync, the system by which monitors currently deal with changing refresh rates, by setting up a path of direct communication between display and graphics card and synchronizing the refresh rate of both together.

The feature inside NVIDIA GeForce Experience known as Shadowplay has been announced as appearing for the public on the 28th of October - this announcement has been made alongside word that the GeForce Experience will allow direct streaming to Twitch. This push has been made at NVIDIA's Montreal event this week, amid talk of new NVIDIA SHIELD abilities with streaming called GameStream - readying the world for streaming from NVIDIA GRID, while we're at it. Here with integration with Twitch, users will be able to make their entire gaming experience public - instantly - and at 1080p and at 60fps as they do so.
