Made by Sharp and running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the SH-12C has a twin 8-megapixel camera array on the back, a 4.2-inch qHD 960 x 540 display on the front, and a 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor inside.

There’s also WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, digital TV and an HDMI output, despite the phone measuring in at 64 x 127 x 11.9-13.8 mm. The display is a glasses-free 3D panel, and the camera has onboard ProPix image processing and various auto scene modes.

NTT DoCoMo slap the TapFlow UI on top, and of course there are the usual Android niceties. The Sharp AQUOS PHONE SH-12C will drop in Japan on May 20, price tbc; no word on whether Sharp will cook up versions for North America and/or Europe, but we’re hoping they do.

TOKYO, JAPAN, May 16, 2011 — NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today its 2011 summer lineup of 24 new mobile devices for launch on or after May 20, including nine smartphones, the largest and most diverse collection of smartphones ever released by DOCOMO, plus a wide variety of feature phones compatible with DOCOMO’s i-mode™ mobile Internet platform, as well as mobile Wi-Fi® routers for DOCOMO’s Xi™ (read “Crossy”) LTE extra-high-speed service.

A slice of Gorilla Glass up-front keeps things from flexing, and should hopefully prevent accidental snapping when Japanese buyers inevitably sit down with the E-04C in their back pocket. Inside there’s Froyo, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth and, somehow, NFC as well.

NTT DoCoMo will be offering the NEC MEDIAS E-04C from March 4, with deliveries expected from March 15. The battery is apparently good for up to 360hrs standby. No word on international availability.

How skinny is too skinny? NEC obviously reckons Android smartphones aren’t quite slender enough, since the new NEC MEDIAS E-04C is a waifish 7.7mm at its slimmest point. Packing Android 2.2 Froyo and, according to Draft life with blog, headed to Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo later this month, the MEDIAS E-04C usurps Samsung’s Galaxy S II, a comparatively tubby 8.49mm, and the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc, a bloated, corpulent 8.9mm.

Despite all that, the MEDIAS E-04C still manages to squeeze in NFC and a 1-Seg digital TV tuner, along with a 4-inch display. Considering Sony Ericsson told us they’d bypassed NFC in the Arc because it added too much bulk, that’s impressive engineering from the NEC team.

Japanese heft-haters will be able to pick up the NEC MEDIAS E-04C from February 24, pricing and full specs yet to be confirmed. International availability is unknown at this stage.

The issue appears to center around the messaging app and how entries have been saved in the contacts; depending on how recipients are put into a new message, it might not be sent correctly or – more worryingly – sent to the wrong person. NTT DoCoMo are working on a fix, but it’s not expected to arrive until late September.

To be fair, though, it’s not like the bug is going to effect many people. The carrier has confirmed sales of just 7,000 LYNX SH-10B units between its Japanese release on July 23rd and today.

It looks like Sharp are playing the field when it comes to carrier partnerships for their IS01 Android-based MID. Having already been picked up by Japanese network KDDI, a strikingly similar looking model has just been announced for NTT DoCoMo. The DoCoMo LYNX SH-10B has a 5-inch touchscreen, full QWERTY keyboard and dual digital cameras – 5.3-megapixels on the outside, 4.3-megapixels on the inside – and runs Android.

There’s also WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, along with HSDPA/HSUPA which can apparently be used worldwide. GPS/A-GPS and a 1-Seg digital TV tuner round out the main hardware specs. Control is via a trackball just under the display.

Access to both the Android Market and NTT DoCoMo’s own download store seems to be included, as does Documents To Go and a photo editing app. The whole thing measures in at 148 x 83 x 17.8 mm and there’s 3.4GB of user-accessible storage (with a microSD card slot to add more). It’ll arrive in Japan on July 23rd in either red or white; no word on pricing nor if Sharp plan to look abroad for their next carrier hook-up.

The board itself measures 110 x 35 mm, which NTT DoCoMo reckon is around the same size as a standard, single-band amplifier. That potentially means you could have a multiband-cellphone, capable of crossing networks wherever the user travels, but no larger than a typical, current handset.

Of course, there’ll also need to be the appropriate wireless radio chips, and the phone would need suitable software to recognize and handle the different networks. You’d also need a forward-looking carrier with sufficient roaming agreements in place; after all, with a CDMA network you can’t just slot in a local SIM and get talking. Still, the promise is enough to get us interested.

Remember the NTT Hikari iFrame Android touchscreen gizmo from earlier this month? It’s not set to arrive in Japan until March 2010, but the company allowed Akihabara News in to play with their latest prototype. Based around a 7-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, the tablet is intended to bridge the gap between a digital photo frame and a proper computer for a less than computer-capable audience.

Interestingly, to do that NTT have decided to close off any real avenue of less-than-official modification, so despite the fact that the iFrame runs an open-source OS there’s no Android Market for general software distribution. Instead, the company is looking to pass any third-party software before it gets shared with users, presumably to make sure it’s in-keeping with the regular media player, photo viewer and other simplistic apps.

They’re even considering developing their own download store, though that will likely depend on how popular the iFrame actually turns out to be with developers. Akihabara News seem pretty impressed by the whole thing; now, is there a market for it outside of Japan?

There’s also an SD card slot, speaker, USB port and a battery for wireless use, though NTT haven’t said how long that actually lasts. It’s expected to be popular with Japanese women in their 20s, and be priced at between $220 and $330; NTT claim using Android rather than another OS helped bring prices down by around 20-30 percent per unit.

If you thought you’d seen it all in Nokia’s Vision of 2015 video, book a flight to Tokyo and stop by Fujitsu’s offices there. They haven’t seen to have got the memo that modular, wirelessly-connected mobile phones with integrated pico-projectors are meant to be the stuff of futurology, not fact, and as such have produced a working version of their F-04B cellphone. Akihabara have been for a play, and claim it’s a brilliant multifunctional device.

The core F-04B splits into two sections, a touchscreen part and a QWERTY keyboard, with the two linked via Bluetooth and functional either as a combined slider device or separately. That makes everything pretty bulky – and Fujitsu’s touchscreen doesn’t get the highest marks – but there’s still space for a 12.2-megapixel camera, 1-Seg digital TV.

As for the 854 x 480 pico-projector, that clicks on in place of the keyboard section, which then doubles as a remote-control. We’re not sure when our Japanese friends will be able to pick one up, but it seems like Fujitsu really do intend to launch the F-04B to the market.

New Android carrier news today, as both Rogers Wireless and NTT DoCoMo are confirmed to be launching Android smartphones in the near future. Rogers Wireless has picked up both the HTC Dream (aka the T-Mobile G1) and the HTC Magic for release on its Canadian network on June 2nd. Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has not confirmed a release date as yet, but will be offering a rebadged version of the HTC Magic.

In Japan, the handset currently on sale as the Vodafone HTC Magic in Europe will be known as the HT-03A. We’re no news on whether the device’s specifications – particularly its 3G radio – will be changed before launch; NTT DoCoMo’s largest network uses the 3G/FOMA system, which is based on W-CDMA technology.

No such confusion for Rogers Wireless, who use a GSM 3G network on which the Dream and Magic will merely need to support the 850MHz band for their high-speed mobile connectivity. Rogers have not confirmed pricing or specific details regarding the Android devices.

NTT have developed a variable focus lens that they claim is 1,000x faster than existing technology. The lens is based on KTN (potassium tantalate niobate), an “electro-optic crystal” the refractive indices of which varies depending on how much voltage is applied across its surface. By adjusting the voltage, the focal length varies.

Existing variable focus lenses using piezoelectric zirconate titanate (PZT) are one thousand times slower, according to NTT. This new lens can be combined with a KTN-based optical beam scanner for 3D photography.

In its current state the KTN lens is unlikely to find its way into many cameras, though. It requires careful temperature management – at the wrong temperature it goes opaque, not much use for a camera lens – which right now demands the Peltier setup shown above. NTT have not given a timescale for commercialization of the technology.
