Notion Ink prompting concerns with lack of hardware demo, sky-high return fees [Updated]

We've written a lot about Notion Ink, and - like many of you - gotten very enthusiastic about the potential for a game-changing Android tablet. As with any launch there's controversy, and also good reasons to be concerned, and - while we'd love Adam to be as authentic as anyone else - we're worried by the absence of solid hardware from the company. We're still trying to get information from Notion Ink CEO Rohan Shravran regarding the Adam slate, but right now we believe it's safer - as ever - not to spend money on a device you've not seen.

Update: Notion Ink has responded; more information after the cut.

It's been a long time coming, but we've heard from a very trusted source that Notion Ink will indeed be throwing open the doors to pre-orders of their Adam tablet tomorrow, Thursday December 9 2010. The company isn't publicly confirming anything at this stage, but our source says that the binary countdown code which has been the basis for many pre-order rumors will read zero tomorrow, and the six Adam versions will go on sale. Meanwhile, we're also told an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread is in the works, targeted for release just weeks after Adam's launch.

Notion Ink tease “big day for Android” on December 6: Pre-orders or Gingerbread?

Notion Ink has put out another of its weekend updates, and it seems Adam is already going through FCC testing. The company also has a few teasers, including the suggestion that "6th December is another big day for Android and you will find out how fast Notion Ink can work. (Eden is extremely compatible with 2.3)"; that could be a hint that pre-orders will open on the 6th, that Android 2.3 Gingerbread is set to launch on that day and Notion Ink will be quickly updating their slate to support the new version, or even that Adam will launch with 2.3 pre-loaded.

On the front page there it is, the Adam, with tags "Developers, About, Blog, and Contact" along the top and "Design, Software, Genesis, and Tech Specs" along the bottom. Notion Ink Adam scratchproof matte display detailed [Videos]

Notion Ink is doing its usual weekend-sharing of a few Adam teasers, and there are a fair few details this time around. Perhaps most important is the fact that Adam will have a special, matte-finish scratch resistant display, including a lot of work avoiding the color fringing that can take place when you don't use a glossy panel. Meanwhile there's also plenty of software news, including the fact that - unlike the iPad - Adam is designed to work as a standalone tablet, rather than requiring regular synchronization if you want to load content.

Notion Ink: Over 20 custom Adam apps, plus 2nd EAP developer round

If there's one thing our time with Android slates like the Samsung Galaxy Tab has shown us, it's that apps that have been customized with a mind to the size of the display can make the difference between true usability or just-another-oversized-phone. We'd already heard that Notion Ink's software engineers were developing custom apps as part of the Adam tablet's unique OS proposition, but now the company has confirmed that, rather than just email, calendar and contacts as are custom on the Galaxy Tab, Adam will have over twenty unique apps preloaded.
