Asus has been making notebooks for years but only really became a name recognized by many consumers in America when it helped launch the netbook revolution in late 2007. Asus' brand recognition has boomed since the Eee line of netbooks became popular and now the company is offering many more full notebooks in America.

While expensive ultraportables may get the bulk of online attention, the real battle is going on at the budget end of the market, where netbooks, CULV ultra-thins and cheap notebooks are fighting it out for a slice of the lucrative back-to-school audience. Into the fray steps Gateway, no stranger to the segment, and they’ve brought along their NV5214u, very much the desktop-replacing notebook rather than a slick but underpowered netbook. With an MRSP of $499.99 it certainly ticks the budget box; check out the full SlashGear review after the cut to see if it can tick any others.

Most cases for computers and cameras are made out of canvas or nylon, if you want something different Built has a new line of cases for you.

Occasionally arch rumor site Digitimes takes a break from speculation and leaks and does some research into PC hardware sales performance.  Latest niche to come under their microscope is the "ultra-thin" notebook, generally based on Intel's CULV (consumer ultra-low voltage) platform, and offering a middle-point between the battery longevity of netbooks and the performance of full-sized notebooks.  Unfortunately for manufacturers, Digitimes claims the ultra-thins will only account for 4-percent of total global notebook shipments in 2009.

Apple’s plastic MacBook may be the odd one out in the company’s unibody range, but according to Apple Insider’s sources the polycarbonate computer is currently undergoing an “industrial design overhaul”.  The new machines – which are tipped to arrive in the next few months – will be slimmer and lighter than the current model, together with having freshly rearranged and updated internal architecture.  There’s also talk of a lower price point than the current $999 tag.
