B&N NOOK could hit UK in late March

Barnes & Noble's international launch plans for NOOK could see the 7-inch NOOK Tablet arrive in the UK later this month, it's suggested, with a developer workshop in London planned to encourage app submissions. The workshop, taking place on March 19 Ebook Magazine reports, doesn't specifically mention the UK release of the NOOK line-up, but does hint that developers in the country could hope for similar success to their US counterparts.

Barnes & Noble Nook Touch gets ‘fast refresh’ hack

Hackers come in all shapes and sizes, and so do the devices they toil away on to try to gain some sort of Internet fame or just personal satisfaction. In that context, the Nook Touch isn't exactly the place for a hotbed of hacking activity but someone has still managed to pull off an exploit that's pretty interesting. The hack involves exponentially increasing the e-reader's refresh rate.

B&N NOOK only bright spot in drooping earnings

Barnes & Noble's cheaper NOOK Tablet can't come too soon: the book retailer's overall sales increased in the most recent financial quarter, but that wasn't enough to avoid a drop in net income. B&N's NOOK business - including digital ebook sales, other downloads, and accessories - rose 38-percent in Q3, pushing sales to $542m, with hardware growth up 64-percent year-on-year. Nonetheless, pre-deduction earnings dipped year-on-year, from $170 million to $150 million.

B&N confirms NOOK business split being explored

Barnes & Noble has confirmed it is exploring splitting off its NOOK ereader/tablet business, investigating whether it could "unlock the value" of the ereader platform by running it as a separate endeavor. Rumored yesterday, such a move would see B&N's publishing business separated from its traditional retail arm. However, the company also admits it "over-estimated" how many monochrome NOOK Simple Touch models it would sell over the holiday period.

Barnes & Noble looking to sell publishing division

In a turn of events, Bookseller Barnes & Noble is apparently considering selling off its publishing division, Sterling Publishing, revealed by a leak today by the Wall Street Journal. The Journal said that B&N was in a search for possible customers, in hoping to focus more on their Nook product line and its core retail business. The bookshop has been publishing some of its own content since the 1970s, but only recently acquired Sterling in 2003 for approximately $115 million.

Nook Tablet and Color get new official apps

Nook Tablet and Color get new official apps

Not long ago Barnes & Noble issued a firmware update that blocked the ability for users of their Nook Color and Tablet to load unofficial apps onto the devices. That was a bummer for sure. I'm not sure if this will make up for it to many users of the devices, but B&N has announced that it has some new official apps to add to the mix for the Nook Tablet and Color.

B&N NOOK Tablet firmware update blocks app sideloading

B&N NOOK Tablet firmware update blocks app sideloading

Barnes & Noble has slammed shut the loophole allowing NOOK Tablet owners to install third-party apps, pushing out a new firmware update - v1.4.1 - that closes the door on all but the retailer's own, approved software. Described as making "minor system enhancements" to the Android-based ereader by B&N itself, the software significantly limits the general usefulness of the NOOK Tablet for those wanting to do more than basic reading and browsing.
