Barnes & Noble NOOK $199 tablet a godsend

, Feb 21st 2012 Discuss [12]

Though Barnes & Noble’s earnings call appears to have turned up sour for the most part, the NOOK lineup may have saved the book company from going Borders way. Having tested the original NOOK Color out back at the start of 2011 when it was released, giving a run down through and through, I can comfortably say the following: $199 for an upgraded version in the NOOK Tablet is quite the deal. You’ve got a high quality tablet that interacts with the Barnes & Noble store like no other, it costs the same as its biggest competitor, and it’s not the same shape as the BlackBerry PlayBook.

B&N NOOK only bright spot in drooping earnings

, Feb 21st 2012 Discuss [0]

Barnes & Noble's cheaper NOOK Tablet can't come too soon: the book retailer's overall sales increased in the most recent financial quarter, but that wasn't enough to avoid a drop in net income. B&N's NOOK business - including digital ebook sales, other downloads, and accessories - rose 38-percent in Q3, pushing sales to $542m, with hardware growth up 64-percent year-on-year. Nonetheless, pre-deduction earnings dipped year-on-year, from $170 million to $150 million. Read The Full Story

Barnes & Noble is reportedly readying a cheaper version of its NOOK Tablet for launch this week, with the 7-inch ereader/slate dropping onboard storage so as to shave away at its price. The new 8GB variant will be officially unveiled on Wednesday, February 22, according to internal Walmart documentation shared with The Verge, though there's no indication of quite how much cheaper than the existing $249 NOOK Tablet the new entry-level version will be. B&N confirms NOOK business split being explored

Barnes & Noble has confirmed it is exploring splitting off its NOOK ereader/tablet business, investigating whether it could "unlock the value" of the ereader platform by running it as a separate endeavor. Rumored yesterday, such a move would see B&N's publishing business separated from its traditional retail arm. However, the company also admits it "over-estimated" how many monochrome NOOK Simple Touch models it would sell over the holiday period. 7-inch Tablet demand surges as iPad 3 specter looms

Strong sales of 7-inch slates like Barnes & Noble's NOOK Tablet, along with waning Apple orders of 9.7-inch iPad displays, has seen the smaller form-factor pull into the lead in Q4 2011 according to supply chain sources. Volumes of 7-inch panel orders in November have already exceed those of 9.7-inch screens, DigiTimes' insiders tell them, though Apple is already believed to be reducing its supply of 1024 x 768 displays ahead of a higher resolution panel in the iPad 3. B&N NOOK Tablet firmware update blocks app sideloading

Barnes & Noble has slammed shut the loophole allowing NOOK Tablet owners to install third-party apps, pushing out a new firmware update - v1.4.1 - that closes the door on all but the retailer's own, approved software. Described as making "minor system enhancements" to the Android-based ereader by B&N itself, the software significantly limits the general usefulness of the NOOK Tablet for those wanting to do more than basic reading and browsing. NOOK Tablet gets unofficial Android Market

, Nov 21st 2011 Discuss [3]

Barnes & Noble's NOOK Tablet has been rooted, allowing the 7-inch $249 slate to run the Android Market among other improvements.
