Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch has today all but confirmed that the Nook hardware will never carry Windows 8 or any version of Windows in the future. Speaking with Fortune Magazine, Lynch let it be known that the primary reason Barnes & Noble and Microsoft are pairing up is their ability to bring the Nook ebook software to "millions of screens and windows." The Nook ereader hardware, on the other hand, will continue to run the open-sourced software known as Android through the future.

Apple, not Amazon, is Microsoft’s NOOK Motivation
Barely was the e-ink dry on Microsoft and Barnes & Noble’s $300m NOOK agreement when pundits were questioning the wisdom of adding Amazon to the software company’s existing roster of big-name rivals. Microsoft is already under attack in mobile and computing, so the commentary went; throwing one of the biggest retailers around into the mixture was at best foolish and at worst evidence of Microsoft spreading itself thin when it needs to be extra lavish with its strokes. That analysis is wrong, though. Make no mistake: Apple, not Amazon, is in Microsoft’s sights today.
Microsoft: No NOOK Windows 8 tablets… yet
Microsoft and Barnes & Noble may have co-launched a digital NOOK business together, but the two firms say it's still too soon for talk of Windows 8 on NOOK-branded tablets. Speaking on an investor call about the deal, Microsoft's Andy Lees said neither company would be talking product roadmaps today, and pointed out that Microsoft has not done a teardown on the NOOK devices to see where they are in terms of Windows 8 requirements.

Microsoft invests $300m into Barnes & Noble subsidiary
Microsoft and Barnes & Noble have today announced a joint partnership to form a new subsidiary. The new subsidiary doesn’t yet have a name, but is said to bring together the digital and college sides of the Barnes & Noble business. Microsoft will make a $300 million investment in exchange for a 17.6% equity stake. Barnes & Noble will own the remaining 82.4%, with the subsidiary having an “ongoing relationship with the company’s retail stores.”
NOOK Audio OE250 headphones make April Fool’s no joke
It appears that what first appeared on the first of this month in the Barnes & Noble store archives has suddenly become a whole lot more real: NOOK headphones! These phones at the moment only have an image and a code-name attached to them, but the details can be gleaned relatively easily. What we're almost certainly looking at here is the book store's first step into the music sales business in a way that's not just hard-backed CD cases and audio books.

NOOK Audio coming from Barnes and Noble soon
It appears that either Barnes & Noble played a very low-key April Fool's joke on unsuspecting NOOK lovers this week, or they're bringing a NOOK Audio device to the market very soon. What we're seeing today is a NOOK Audio model number OE250 page on Barnes & Noble thanks to intrepid searchers at The Digital Reader where they also note that the company filed for a trademark for that name all the way back in February (last month.) Will Barnes & Noble be releasing an MP3 player soon?

B&N NOOK could hit UK in late March
Barnes & Noble's international launch plans for NOOK could see the 7-inch NOOK Tablet arrive in the UK later this month, it's suggested, with a developer workshop in London planned to encourage app submissions. The workshop, taking place on March 19 Ebook Magazine reports, doesn't specifically mention the UK release of the NOOK line-up, but does hint that developers in the country could hope for similar success to their US counterparts.

Barnes & Noble NOOK $199 tablet a godsend
Though Barnes & Noble’s earnings call appears to have turned up sour for the most part, the NOOK lineup may have saved the book company from going Borders way. Having tested the original NOOK Color out back at the start of 2011 when it was released, giving a run down through and through, I can comfortably say the following: $199 for an upgraded version in the NOOK Tablet is quite the deal. You’ve got a high quality tablet that interacts with the Barnes & Noble store like no other, it costs the same as its biggest competitor, and it’s not the same shape as the BlackBerry PlayBook.
B&N NOOK only bright spot in drooping earnings
Barnes & Noble's cheaper NOOK Tablet can't come too soon: the book retailer's overall sales increased in the most recent financial quarter, but that wasn't enough to avoid a drop in net income. B&N's NOOK business - including digital ebook sales, other downloads, and accessories - rose 38-percent in Q3, pushing sales to $542m, with hardware growth up 64-percent year-on-year. Nonetheless, pre-deduction earnings dipped year-on-year, from $170 million to $150 million.

NOOK Tablet 8GB official for $199
Barnes & Noble has officially confirmed the new NOOK Tablet 8GB, a $199 version of the existing NOOK Tablet that brings the 7-inch ereader-slate down to compete with Amazon's Kindle Fire. Meanwhile, the ebook retailer has also slashed the price of the NOOK Color, bringing it down to $169. The new NOOK Tablet 8GB has the same 1GHz dual-core processor of the original, together with a battery rated for 11.5hrs of ebook reading.
