Nokia N8 benchmarks tip 180% speed boost over N97

, May 23rd 2010 Discuss [6]

While Nokia's overall specifications for the N8 generally met with approval - if not, in the case the 12-megapixel camera, outright lust - the smartphone's 680MHz processor led to some criticism that the phone might not keep up with its Android and Windows Phone rivals.  Over at Finestfones they've apparently had enough hands-on time with an N8 prototype to run some benchmarking tests, and the reassuring news is that, in comparison with previous Symbian handsets, it's quite the little speed demon. Nokia Bots promises autonomous smartphone learning [Video]

, Mar 30th 2010 Discuss [0]

Last year I bemoaned the state of social networking on mobile devices, and suggested that smartphone software should focus more on intelligently offering up contextually-appropriate information than merely replicating the desktop experience.  At the time, I pointed to some ongoing research at Nokia Research called the Linked Internet UI Concept, which promised to learn from your use and attention and thus better serve up news on your friends and colleagues.  We're yet to see any public release of that concept, but Nokia Research have pushed out what could be the first step toward it: Nokia Bots. Nokia N97 experience “a tremendous disappointment” admits exec [Video]

, Feb 23rd 2010 Discuss [0]

The Nokia N97 was not, to be blunt, the darling device the geeks among us were hoping for.  Suffering from a sizeable delay between initial announcement and availability, together with poor release firmware, it generally ditched in reviews.  Speaking candidly at MWC 2010 last week, Nokia's EVP of markets, Anssi Vanjoki, admitted that "the N97 was a tremendous disappointment in terms of the experience quality for the consumer".  Check out the video interview after the cut. Nokia Ovi maps for N97 released

, Jan 27th 2010 Discuss [0]

Having surprised at least a few people (and no doubt upset TomTom and Garmin) last week by making Ovi Maps with turn-by-turn directions free for select S60 users, Nokia have now added N97 support.  The new version is available directly through the N97 itself, by navigating to the software update client in the applications folder; we'd recommend doing that over WiFi simply for the speed benefits. Nokia Messaging Beta 2 launched: Twitter added, fuller Facebook [Video]

, Dec 14th 2009 Discuss [0]

Nokia have announced the second beta of Nokia Messaging for Social Networks, and they're now including Twitter support together with greater Facebook integration. The app is aimed at Nokia's N97, N97 mini and 5800 handsets, and the device's own communication - SMS and calls - are tied into individual profiles. As well as photo uploading - complete with GPS geotagging - there's video uploading to Facebook too. You can also add a Facebook calendar event to your handset's calendar with one tap, and there's no full profile support so you can see other users' walls and photo galleries, and comment on them. Nokia N97 mini review

We’ve had two QWERTY Nokia smartphones on the SlashGear test-bench this past week, and the surprising thing is how differently the respective user experience is. Our Nokia E72 review went live earlier today; now we turn to the Nokia N97 mini, viewed by many – for better or for worse – as the Finnish company’s second attempt at the N97. Second-time lucky or still well short? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

It's all go in Nokia N97 land this week, with the double news that not only have the Finnish company released the much-anticipated 2.0 firmware update for the original N97, but that the Nokia N97 mini would be arriving on shelves.  The N97 mini - officially announced at Nokia World back in September - has a smaller chassis than the N97, but uses the same touchscreen-friendly S60 5th Edition OS. Nokia N97 Mini gets early review: Awful keyboard

, Aug 25th 2009 Discuss [0]

We knew the Nokia N97 Mini was only mildly smaller than its full-sized sibling, but Mobile-Review's Eldar Murtazin has - thanks to his early access to the QWERTY smartphone - confirmed it with a full review.  Unfortunately for Nokia, he's not impressed: a combination of insufficient price differentiation between the N97 Mini and the N97, mediocre looks and, most damning, a keyboard that's actually worse than that of the original add up to a handset that's yet to answer the original question of "why bother?" Images of the Nokia N97 Mini have leaked, showing the rumored compact version of the company's flagship touchscreen smartphone next to its full-sized N97 siblingTipped to arrive in the second-half of 2009, the phone is shorter than the existing N97 and swaps the distinct directional pad on the slide-out keyboard for more traditional arrow buttons. Over at our sibling site PhoneMag they've posted the full Nokia N97 review, and if you've been as eagerly-anticipating this smartphone as we have then you really need to read it.  On paper, the N97 ticks just about every box you could hope for, but when it comes to usability and overall polish it seems that Nokia may have dropped the ball. SlashGear Week in Review – Week 25 2009

, Jun 21st 2009 Discuss [0]

We’ve been singularly cellularly obsessed here at SlashGear over the past seven days, and it’ll come as no surprise that the run-up to the iPhone 3G S has occupied much of our attention.  The new Apple smartphone may not look much different to its predecessor, but if our hands-on first impressions are anything to go by, Cupertino have done their best to make the user-experience as polished as the casing.  Still, it’s not just shiny Apple hardware that’s caught our eye this week; Novatel Wireless’ GSM MiFi 2352 piqued our interest when we talked to the company themselves on Monday, and  then proceeded to impress us considerably in our full review.
