If you are a Nokia fan and have been looking forward to the N950 packing MeeGo and a lot more a new video has landed that you might be interested in. The video has a developer showing off the handset and talking about the features and operation (presumably). I say presumably because the video is in Thai and I have no idea what the person is actually saying. All we do know is that the smartphone is handled on the video and you can see what the thing is about even if we can’t understand the language.

You can watch the video to see the smartphone in action. Thankfully, we already know a lot about the phone including specificaitons. We know it has a 4-inch TFT LCD and a physical QWERTY keyboard under the screen. The screen also angles when open like a little netbook to let you see more comfortably while typing. The N950 uses a 1GHz processor and a PowerVX SGX530 for graphics. The N9 uses these same parts.

Power comes from a 1320 mAh battery and the N950 gets Bluetooth 2.1. Nokia has maintained that the N950 is a developer device and isn’t intended to be an everyday phone. The N950 has also already been torn apart so we can gander at the insides. The full 17 minute video is below for you to look at and if you speak Thai and the guy on camera gives up any cool tidbits let us know.

New hope for the Nokia and Microsoft partnership came this week with the unveiling of the N9 MeeGo handset and the Windows Phone Mango version of it dubbed the “Sea Ray.” The N950 sports a similar styling but will have a larger screen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and be deemed a developer-only device. All in all, a positive week in developments for Nokia, but not so much for RIM. The BlackBerry maker began layoffs this week and further cut back sales estimates of the PlayBook tablet.

Various budget-friendly Android tablets are on their way, including the Vizio 8-inch tablet, Acer Iconia Tab A100, Archos G9 series 8-inch and 10-inch tablets, and the Huawei MediaPad. Various smartphones are either on their way or have just launched, including the Motorola TRIUMPH, Droid 3, and Droid Bionic. There’s also the AT&T LG Thrill 4G and the T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide. Some Apple news rounds out this week’s review.

Back when the Nokia N950 cleared the FCC in mid-May, confidentiality requests meant we couldn’t see the guts of what we now know to be the MeeGo developers version of the Nokia N9. With all those details official, however, the full listing has opened up and revealed the teardown shots of what’s going on inside the N950. Among the entrails, confirmation that the N950′s camera is indeed a 12-megapixel unit, rather than the 8-megapixels in the N9.

A beefier camera had been suspected from the start, with Nokia coyly saying that the N950 was “capable of” the same resolution shots as the N9 but leaving wiggle room for something higher-resolution. Other differences include a slightly larger display using an LCD TFT panel rather than the N9′s AMOLED Clear Black display. The N950 obviously has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, too, whereas the N9 is one solid, “pillowy” block of polycarbonate and Gorilla Glass.

The non-user-accessible BL-4D battery – confirmed by the teardown shots – is lower capacity than the N9, at 1,320 mAh, but then again Nokia doesn’t really intend the N950 to be anybody’s daily device: it’s a developer handset, after all. The first units started arriving with coders late last week.

It seems that the first Nokia N950 units are reaching developers, only days after the MeeGo smartphone was officially announced. Stockholm-based Bambuser, which develops an interactive video streaming service, took to Twitter to confirm their new QWERTY toy had arrived.

Bambuser already offers a version of their streaming video app for Maemo 5 (as well as Android, iOS, bada, various Symbian releases and Windows Mobile) and that existing focus looks to have earned them the N950 on this occasion. Nokia has previously confirmed that the N950 will be distributed by invitation-only, rather than put up for general sale. The handset will be supplied with no warranty and no service support.

Specification-wise, the N950 has a 4-inch TFT LCD display rather than the Nokia N9‘s 3.9-inch AMOLED panel, and of course adds in a physical QWERTY keyboard rather than being all-touch. More on the specs – and differences – here. As for the N9, that’s expected to go on sale to consumers in Sweden on September 23; availability elsewhere is yet to be confirmed.

[Thanks Steve!]

Nokia may have flagged up the vast number of Qt apps available for the Nokia N9 (and its developer sibling, the N950), but the catalog doesn’t necessarily end there. Myriad has already demonstrated its Alien Dalvik system for running unmodified Android apps on MeeGo devices, developer Steve Troughton-Smith reminded us, as seamless to the end-user as the join between the N9′s display and the polycarbonate housing, and promising the same performance as native software.

Alien Dalvik allows app stores and developers to simply repackage the Android .apk installation files and then have those apps run on MeeGo hardware like the N9. Hardware capabilities of the device are accessible to the original Android app, and any more complex integrations can be tweaked to suit using the Android SDK plugin Myriad offers.

It’s not the first time we’ve heard about cross-platform Android app support, of course; RIM announced earlier this year that the BlackBerry PlayBook would support Android software later in the year. Our first impressions of the Nokia N9 were very positive, and we can’t help but imagine Android apps on the sturdy Finnish hardware would be a compelling combination.

According to Myriad, Alien Dalvik will be commercially available for MeeGo sometime this year. The company announced last month that it was in talks with car companies to use the system on vehicle computers, an area MeeGo is already targeting, with BMW, GM, Hyundai, Renault, Delphi and Peugeot-Citroen all signed up to use the platform in future vehicles.

Nokia broke a few hearts when it confirmed the N950 would only be offered to developers rather than going on general sale, leaving consumers with the keyboard-free N9, and watching mobilenet.cz‘s demo video we can’t help but feel disappointed not to have the choice ourselves. Hinging open like the E7, the N950 scores points for great keyboard feel with well-spaced buttons.

Compared to the N9, the N950 has a TFT LCD display rather than AMOLED and is obviously thicker to accommodate the keyboard mechanism; there are some other hardware differences which we detailed yesterday. Software-wise, there’s a Terminal mode and some other tweaks to suit developers looking to get their apps ready for MeeGo.

We’re particularly impressed by how well the N950′s display holds its own in comparison to the excellent Clear Black panels on the N9: viewing angles and colors are surprisingly strong. Previous leaks suggested that the N9 would launch with a physical keyboard as well, but that operators expressed concerns with the strength of the hinge. Notably, Nokia is warning developers that the N950 is offered with no warranty and no service support.

Nokia would only confirm that the new N9 was on its way sometime in 2011, but according to at least one report it could well be sooner rather than later. A Forbes source close to Nokia revealed that the MeeGo-based N9 would be on store shelves “within a month.”

Meanwhile, “a developers’ edition of the phone” – which sounds to us a lot like the Nokia N950 – is supposedly even closer to release, with Nokia tipped to be handing out handsets straight away. The N950 takes most of the N9′s specs, pairs them with a slightly bigger 4-inch touchscreen and a physical QWERTY keyboard, and slots them inside an aluminum slide-and-tilt chassis rather than the consumer device’s polycarbonate.

Still unclear is pricing for the N9, though Forbes warns that it’s not likely to be cheap and the specs would certainly support that prediction. Select MeeGo developers will be in line for a free N950 courtesy of Nokia, though how exactly you get onto that coveted list remains to be seen.

Nokia’s N9 certainly looks like the device to reignite complaints over the company bypassing MeeGo, but what if you’re a developer and you want some physical QWERTY goodness too? The Nokia N950 developer device has also been quietly announced, a 4-inch LCD TFT 854 x 480 slider with a tilting screen, the same 1GHz OMAP3630 processor and PowerVR SGX530 graphics as the N9, and what we’re guessing is a form-factor very similar to the much-leaked photo shown here.

Unlike the N9 there’s an aluminum chassis rather than polycarbonate, and NFC is missing. There’s also a 1320 mAh battery, smaller than the N9′s 1,450 mAh. The camera also comes in at 8-megapixels, but is apparently a different unit to the consumer-focused device (though of “very similar image quality”). The N950 gets Bluetooth 2.1 whereas the N9 supports Bluetooth 4.0, and has a “slightly more sensitive” digital compass and ALS.

Although the temptation of QWERTY will be hard for many to avoid, Nokia is pretty resolute that the N950 is a developer device and not intended to be an everyday phone. Construction will be of “beta quality” according to the specs, and there will be no warranty or support to fall back on. This is definitely one for the developers to cook up MeeGo apps on, rather than for you to carry in your pocket.

No word on pricing or availability at this stage.
