N900 gets Maemo 5 PR1.1 update: Exchange 2003 support, Ovi Maps improved

Nokia have pushed out a significant firmware upgrade for the Nokia N900, Maemo 5 PR1.1, and there are some key changes which will hopefully make it a more palatable device for business users.  Top of the list is tweaked Mail for Exchange support, which means the N900 now supports Exchange Server 2003; previously the N900 would only work with more recent versions, despite many companies still using 2003 (or third-party equivalents of it, such as Kerio Mail Server installs). In today's day and age controlling one device with another is pretty common place. You can control your thermostat with a SMS message, arm your alarm system or even use your Blackberry to control your home theater. Of course using your Blackberry as a remote requires a stand alone device and a $100 piece of software.  For those of us lucky enough to own a Nokia N900 there is a new app called BlueMaemo which allows you to control a host of Bluetooth devices from your phone. Nokia Hackerbox makes geeks work for their N900 [Video]

Nokia's product strategy may not meet with universal approval, but they can certainly teach most of us a thing or two about wrapping presents.  Mint Digital's Utku found a strange black box waiting for him at the office today, unmarked aside from a Nokia logo and a miniUSB port.  An included card pointed him to hackerbox.co.uk, and the combined tech minds of Mint Digital eventually managed to get the box open. Optima OP5-E Maemo MID gets reviewed [Video]

Nokia may only have plans for a single further Maemo device in 2010, but that's not to say the market will be limited to that unnamed handset and the N900.  Optima have launched the first non-Nokia Maemo MID the shape of the Optima OP5-E, a 4.3-inch resistive WVGA touchscreen, 806MHz Marvell PXA310+ ARM processor and integrated 3G (CDMA now; HSDPA coming next month).  Over at ARMDevices Charbax has reviewed the OP5-E, and he seems pretty excited about its possibilities. Should Nokia Abandon Symbian S60 for Maemo Linux?

Nokia has a problem: it is both the largest handset vendor in the world, by a significant margin, and the largest smartphone vendor in the world – again, by a significant margin. Yet it has never managed to crack the U.S. smartphone market, and it has begun losing market share even in its European strongholds, primarily to Apple, though RIM, Samsung, and HTC are also threats. Nokia admits that it was caught sleeping while Apple first redefined the mobile user experience with the iPhone, and then again when Apple reenergized app development with the App Store. Nokia’s initial response has been lackluster: adapting its existing Symbian S60 OS to support touch, applying that to a few phones (the 5800 and the N97), and stumbling in its initial launch of the Ovi Store.

Nokia N900 in-store sales delayed in UK

Looks like Nokia was a victim of its own success.  Not only has the N900 taken far longer to reach the market than initially expected, strong pre-order sales have meant the company has been forced to push back its in-store release of the Maemo 5 smartphone until December 4th.  The Finnish company told NokNok that demand has basically outstripped supply. Nokia Nseries to all run Maemo not Symbian by 2012

Maemo - as on the Nokia N900 - is still more of a geek's paradise than a consumer-ready platform, so we hope the development team responsible for it will be working hard over the next couple of years.  That's because the Maemo marketing team have let slip that, as of 2012, Maemo will replace Symbian as the OS for Nokia's entire Nseries range of handsets. Nokia N900 ships today; Maemo enhancements get video demo

SlashGear is at Nokia’s The Way We Live Next 3.0 conference in Helsinki, Finland this week, and the company has just confirmed that the much-anticipated Nokia N900 Maemo smartphone will be shipping today.  We’ve been told that the handset – which has a 3.5-inch resistive touchscreen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard – went out from Nokia’s production facilities over the weekend, with shipments of the handset beginning in Europe, the Middle East, Russia and North America.
