IHS reveals Lumia 900’s iPhone roots

IHS reveals Lumia 900’s iPhone roots

This week the folks at IHS, aka IHS iSuppli, have revealed what they've torn down and discovered to be as the price of the components which make up the Nokia Lumia 900. This device apparently costs a mere $209 in parts plus $8 to build, putting the device at 46 percent of its retail price. The reason Nokia is able to make this fabulous feat a reality is their relatively new triad of close ties with Microsoft and Qualcomm - this creating a hardware and software powerhouse which allows for top-tier features with lower-tiered pricing akin to Apple's own "playbook" for device creation.

Bad luck Nokia: Your Next Billion is saying No Thanks

You can't make an omelet without breaking eggs, but Nokia's looking more scrambled than anything else today. Some number crunching after Nokia's warning of worse-than-predicted financials for Q1 2012 reveals quite how badly the Finnish company's legacy business is crumbling: the same business that Nokia was relying on to keep it afloat during the Windows Phone transition. The headline figure: a mere 83 million handset sales, down from 108.5m a year ago.

Nokia sold more than two million Lumia Windows Phones in Q1 2012, the company has confirmed, though still warns that its financial performance for the period will be less impressive than previously predicted. The Finns blame "competitive industry dynamics" - particularly in developing markets - and a decline in gross margins for smartphones for the decline in operating margins, which it now predicts will be a loss of 3-percent rather than the break-even or  minus 2-percent as before.

Nokia offers Lumia 900 free in data bug mea culpa

Nokia has slashed its Lumia 900 Windows Phone flagship to free on AT&T, a temporary promotion to apologize to customers for a data connectivity glitch in early models. Described as "a gesture of goodwill" the discount - which will take the form of a $100 credit to an AT&T account for any existing Lumia 900 owner or any buyer between now and April 21 - effectively reduces the subsidized price of the handset to nothing.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: April 9, 2012

Happy Monday, everyone. Welcome to the start of yet another week. You know, it's not often we start off a week with a billion dollar story, but this time... Facebook scoops up Instagram for $1 billion. That almost makes this next story seem pale by comparison, but AT&T is ready to spend a whole bunch of money marketing the new Nokia Lumia 900 - $150 million to be exact. And as long as we're dealing with big numbers, let's turn to China. Not such great news there, as Anonymous says it is planning more attacks on China.
