Nokia North American phone sales slashed in half in Q3

Sales of Nokia handsets in the North American market dived by 50-percent in Q3 2012 versus the previous quarter, the company has confirmed, with just 300,000 phones sold in the lucrative region. In fact, Nokia sales only increased in Q3 in two markets - up 10-percent in Europe and 5-percent in Asia-Pacific - with Greater China sales ditching 27-percent and Latin America down 9-percent, for a total decline of 1-percent in volumes compared to Q2 2012. Nokia WP8 Lumia production reportedly in-house; Existing phone prices slashed

Nokia has slashed the price of its existing Windows Phone 7 devices and reportedly plans to take responsibility for manufacturing its new Lumia 920 and 820 models, according to industry whispers. Prices for the Lumia 800 have been slashed by around 15-percent, the biggest cut to the range, according to Reuters' insiders, with talk that the firm has not outsourced production of the new Windows Phone 8 handsets revealed yesterday, but will instead build them in-house. Nokia releases City Lens augmented reality app

Remember augmented reality? Smartphone users may have had brief flings with the technology using apps like Layar. The charm doesn’t seem to have stayed with us over the years, although Google is planning to bring it back. That hasn’t stopped Nokia from creating its own augmented reality app for Windows Phone, what they call Nokia City Lens. Nokia has given 17,000 phones to developers

As much as we like both Nokia and Windows Phone, not to mention the delicious pairing of the two, one feature that has been missing from phones like the Lumia 710 and 800 is the ability to tether your 3G connection. Nokia: 2m Lumia sales in Q1 but finances still underwhelming

Nokia sold more than two million Lumia Windows Phones in Q1 2012, the company has confirmed, though still warns that its financial performance for the period will be less impressive than previously predicted. The Finns blame “competitive industry dynamics” – particularly in developing markets – and a decline in gross margins for smartphones for the decline in operating margins, which it now predicts will be a loss of 3-percent rather than the break-even or  minus 2-percent as before.
