Toyota, Honda, Nissan all involved in major recalls over airbag faults

Some of the top automakers in Japan have been embroiled in the middle of major recalls having to do with the airbags in some of the vehicles they produced. Honda, Nissan, and Toyota have all recently issued recalls due to an airbag fault that could lead to improperly inflating airbags in the event of an accident. All three automakers use components for airbags produced by a Japanese manufacturer called Takata Corp.

Nissan has announced plans to roll out a gas-electric hybrid version of its popular Pathfinder SUV this summer, a change that will bring with it a slight increase in both price and gas mileage. Neither a specific release date nor price were given, but word has it the SUV will cost about $3,000 more than the current non-hybrid Pathfinder, which has a starting price of $41,000, and goes up from there to nearly $50k.

Ford, Daimler AG, and the Renault-Nissan alliance will jointly a develop a fuel-cell system for eco-conscious motoring, with the first mass-market, "affordable" model tipped for 2017. The pact - which follows a similar agreement by BMW and Toyota, also concerning fuel-cell technology - will see a single fuel-cell stack and system that will form the basis of a new range of cars from each marque, with the same underlying technology rebranded to suit different consumer segments.
