Nissan promises self-driving cars for the masses by 2020

Nissan has announced that they will have self-driving cars available by the year 2020. Or more specifically, that they will have "commercially-viable Autonomous Drive in multiple vehicles by the year 2020." Nissan has detailed plans to have availability across the model range within two vehicle generations and to launch a proving ground in Japan that will be dedicated to autonomous driving.

Infiniti EMERG-E First Drive

Infiniti EMERG-E First Drive

As environmentally-friendly concepts go, Nissan's Infiniti EMERG-E is definitely more in the BMW i8 camp of performance first, rather than the meek eco-boxes that can give EVs a bad name, and we've been lucky enough to grab a test drive of one of the two working cars in existence while at Nissan 360. While most concepts look great but can often manage no more than a sluggish roll from delivery trailer to car show stand, the 402HP EMERG-E isn't short on either power or poise. Nissan Autonomous Cars: We talk Self-Driving with R&D chief Carla Bailo

Nissan's self-driving car technology works, but when will we see the first autonomous vehicles on the road, and how do you coax keen drivers out from behind the wheel and into trusting their AI chauffeur? Cars that can drive themselves are, many believe, the answer to cutting road-related fatalities and making better use of highways, but it raises challenges beyond those the industry has traditionally faced about "normal" transportation. We talked with Carla Bailo, president of Nissan Technical Center North America and senior vice president of NNA R&D Americas, at Nissan 360 this week about where the company's first real-world trials, the similarities and differences between Nissan's approach and Google's, and why one of the biggest selling points might well be the promise of a good cup of coffee.

Nissan Leaf Self-Driving Car First-Drive

Autonomous cars aren't just the preserve of Google and MIT; Nissan has been working on its own self-driving technology, and we took a ride in the custom Leaf EV to see just how the future feels. The technology uses a special, second-gen version of the Safety Shield technology Nissan will debut on production models this year, upgraded with extra cameras and laser radar systems to identify and track other road users, pedestrians, and the surrounding terrain, and navigate through accordingly.

Nissan Safety Shield upgrade makes Leaf EV self-driving

Nissan has demonstrated a new version of its Safety Shield technology, adding 360-degree sensors to a custom Leaf EV that, with onboard AI, tease the company's ongoing work on autonomous, self-driving cars. Safety Shield, the first version of which will debut on production Nissans later this year, monitors activity around the car; in its new prototypes, shown off for the first time at Nissan 360, the Leaf adds to those senses with full camera coverage from every angle to track potential risks, pedestrians, other vehicles, and road signs.

Nissan Titan V8 turbo-diesel set to deliver mid-500lb-ft torque

Nissan will fit its next-gen Titan pickup with a new Cummins V8 turbo diesel, the car company has announced, a torque-rich new powerplant promising more than 300 HP. Expected to offer mid-500s lb-ft torque from its 5.0-liter V8, the new engine comes after Nissan's research indicated it could add around 300,000 brand-switching Titan buyers if only it threw in an up-to-date diesel option.
